iphone 4S camera real world comparisons with the likes of a canon 5D, nokia n8, and a samsung galaxy 2S are hitting sites such as engadget and bgr. the footage speaks for itself, it's impressive and can say that the 4S has the best camera available in a smartphone.

nokia has some catching up to do.

only saw the Engadget one but there is no way the N8 camera is as bad as they are showing. Throws the entire article into question

Yeah I was looking at Flickr photos and they looked real good. Still, as much as everyone raved about the iPhone 4 camera, I always felt that my Focus matched it in most conditions. I've taken some amazing shots and I'm sure the Focus S is going to take great pictures as well. The challenge is obviously low light, and I saw some bad low light photos from the 4s, so it hasn't completely kicked that problem yet. I'd say that the top of the line phones are going to be close on camera capabilities, at least to the point where it shouldn't be a deciding factor. I've seen Titan shots that looked amazing, and Brandon Watson posted a ridiculous Focus S shot as well.

I'm really excited about attending some VIP Windows Phone 7 event on the 23rd. Not even sure how I was invited but I hear they give out soon to be released phones at these events. Hope I get an HTC Titan.

Yeah, I have taken some fantastic pictures with my Focus as well.

You'll get a Radair and you will like it.

i really don't understand why microsoft and its partners aren't releasing these new mango phones. so far, the media has really been positive about mango. have been for about a month now since the update released. there are positive reviews of the radar and the titan but guess what? not a single mango device to be found on store shelves. yet, the galaxy s2 and the iphone 4s are selling like wildfire.

i really think microsoft held the release back because of the skype deal. their marketing push probably featured skype cross platform from pc to phone and the phones were held back to include a skype app.

or i could be completely off and microsoft is jus f'ng up windows phone again.

There's something up with their N8 shots. I still believe it's top dog as far as camera phones go. Interested to see how the N9 fares.

i think the 1080p video of the 4S make it top dog now.

I've been playing PLATFORMANCE: Temple Death a lot lately, as I really enjoyed PLATFORMANCE: Castle Pain when I played it on Xbox 360. I'd gotten rid of my Xbox 360 prior to moving, however, as I knew that I wouldn't have time to play it, nor did I want to risk damage while in transit. All I can say is that I really, really wish that these games would be released on PC. The touch screen controls aren't kind to these games.

Looks like they're admitting an error.

Update: Images from the Nokia N8 are not in line with those we've captured in the past. We're troubleshooting our device sample and will update this post accordingly.

I wish one of my friends/fam had a WinP7 so I could give it an extended test drive.

iOS guy here through and through but this phone's UI appeals to me far more than any janky android set.

Can't you play with it in a retail store?

I think they really nailed the feel of the OS. The entire OS feels as satisfying as using the webOS cards. It just feels right. It's my favorite mobile OS by far. It really comes alive when you put in your credentials (facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.).

Unfortunately, the hardware hasn't matched the software up to this point (well, since Mango). Hopefully the second gen phones and Nokia address this shortcoming.

I have. I want an extended run and that's never comfortable in store. =(
Unfortunately, unless your significant other or a family member gets the phone, you won't really get a thorough hands on. The phone comes alive when you sign in with your credentials and feels personal in a way others don't, but that won't happen on a store demo. The phones sell used for $120-$150, but I know that's not realistic for everyone just to have a backup phone. In that scenario, you would just swap your SIM out (with an adapter if you have an iPhone 4).

So did I so i found a Samsung Focus on craigslist for $90 and a LG Quantum for $100. Ended up selling the LG Quantum for $140 on Ebay.

You can't really set up your facebook and IM services on a display device. You need to use the phone for a few days to really get to know it. Once you've bought it you're stuck with it for 2 years. When I played with Android for about 10 minutes I thought it was alright, but after 3 days I was so annoyed with the thing I gave it back to the friend I borrowed it from.

i kinda feel the same. it always looks so good, but then i use my brothers phone i kinda get turned away. i am sure if i was using Galaxy s II or another phone like it, i would like the platform more.

That what impresses me, and frustrates me, about Windows Phone. It runs so well on middling hardware.

There isn't a halo device for Windows Phone, yet the experience is rock solid across the board.

Soon.

Remember that article about HTC and Samsung pumping more money in Windows Phone marketing?

Full page ad for the Titan in an English newspaper.

And a TV spot for the Radar.

That's a start.[/QUOTE]

The text in the print ad is also pretty terrible ("it has multitasking! magic!"), but at least people will be more aware of the phones. Or something like that.

again, you guys give "people" too much credit. people will pass by it going "oh HTC made its own OS thats nice :3" and why would you make a poster and not show the home screen. instead they show the multi-tasking screen. no one else will know that. microsft needs to find a way to consistent. they must show one screen (home screen imo) and never anything else.

I think the multitasking screen sucks.

They should just use the same screen as tabs from the browser. It's too cumbersome to pan through, plus it looks way too sparse. WebOS was designed around the cards, this seems just tacked on. If they are going to keep this, then they should add something to the top and bottom (notification updates?).

It wouldn't surprise me if they drop it in the future and just adopt the Windows 8 bezel swipe to fast switch apps.

So I decided to buy an unlocked Dell Venue Pro from amazon for ~ $182 just to give wp7 a try. I'm coming from a year of android usage on tmobile's g2 while owning a zune hd and having zune pass subscription since it was first offered.

The phone is amazing! I was surprised at how easy my google contacts were synced in, it was just like switching to another android phone. After syncing and linking my facebook contacts as best I can after the initial matching done by the phone, I daresay this is the best facebook phone i've ever used. There are a lot of little things I don't like, mainly how a lot of the messaging doesn't default to text entry when you view a thread or how pressing key on the physical keyboard doesnt jump straight to text entry. The marketplace is terrible , and being that I judge platforms by the quality of their available tower defense games (mazing is important to me), wp7 gets a solid 1/10 from me in that regard.

I'm not sure if I should keep it long term though, as portable games I can sneak in during work are plentiful and mostly free on android but the UI and really just the unified experience is pretty great. It could use a bit more customization options for just about everything but that ui coupled with the sexy oled screen is just pure sex. Bonus points for looking like a proper corporate phone too. Right now i'm excited to see what Nokia can do with wp7 but I can only use phones with sliders of which there are always very few options.

In the market for a new phone for my Dad, and Android still look janky and unintuitive (the latest time I owned an Android phone was the Nexus S) Windows Phone 7 seems like a nice alternative.

Engadget are saying the Titan is the best atm, but what else would be recommended?

There's still a lot of wasted space. If they're intent on keeping it, I'd add notifications.

That said, the more I think about it the more I'd like the bezel gestures and just get rid of this.
Who cares about "wasted space"? Not everything needs to be filled and overloaded with information. Metro clearly shows that. Reminds me of the complains about the arrow on the home screen and how it should be placed over the tiles, so they could fill up the screen. Jesus.

Wait for the rest of the second gen devices (like the Titan) including the Focus S and whatever Nokia brings.

It should be very soon.

Big difference between the home screen which can have around eight options showing and the abortion that is the multitasking screen which has one and a half.

There's a ton of wasted space on that task switcher, come on dude. The cards style of task switching sucks. I'm pretty peeved they switched (punlol) to that shit for ICS.
