but..but...different internals!!!! Lol, this wait for mango phones has gone from pathetic to farcical. HTC launched the Titan in EU where nobody even cares about it. We don't have anyone in this thread with a Titan, whereas if this thing had been launched on AT&T already, I guarantee you we'd have some Titan owners in this thread.

It's pretty much indicative of the platform as a whole. Really cool ideas followed up by total head scratching decisions. It makes me wonder how long that can continue world wide before something starts to fall apart.

I like how HTC can put out a million phones for multiple platforms while Nokia takes a year to have their entire company focus on refitting an existing phone for one platform.
I'm just sitting on my ass waiting for these new phones and am getting restless but am determined to stick it out. Other potential customers might not be willing to wait and just go ahead with the new iPhone or an Android set.

My money is out on the table ready to be taken by Nokia and Mango. They've got to speed this along.

Been coming here every day to see if I can find some info on a release date for the US At&t Titan. So ready to get rid of this 3gs iPhone but a guy can only wait so long.

Nokia's current strategy is to release new products right after they've been announced. Some of the stuff we'll see on 26th should be on shelves within a few weeks after that.

My co-worker is in the same predicament. He has a 3GS and would like to replace it with a Titan, but is getting tired of waiting. What's worse is that we have absolutely NO INFORMATION on release dates. Nothing. AT&T even bothered to make a press release announcing the mango phones without photos, pricing, or release dates for the Titan, Focus S, and Focus Flash. My head hurts at how stupid that is. If the Titan weren't already out in EU, we wouldn't even know what it looks like. Apple announced AND released the iPhone 4S, next week Google announces the Prime. If they release that phone before we get these new mango phones..........I don't even know what to think at this point. Who in the right mind would jump into this platform whilst ignoring iPhone 4S and Nexus Prime? Why would anyone do that?

edit: on Windows Phone podcast, one of the guys stated that he played with the Samsung Focus S and he liked it more than the Titan. He says its light, gave the impression that it felt a little cheap (just like the current Focus does), but that the screen and super skinny form factor won out for him. Can anyone come up with a good reason to have those phones out there and not put them out on store shelves? Would AT&T actually tell Samsung or HTC that they can't sell the phones until sometime in November? Who can we blame for this ineptitude?

What day did Mango officially start being sent out to users?
Wasn't it supposed to be 10 business days for it to reach all users?

I still don't have the Mango update (forcing it hasn't worked, tried countless times) and want to email AT&T again with a point of reference.

Definitely with you on the release date frustration. As for the podcast...without seeing either phone in person, I'm leaning toward the Titan because of the screen size over picture. After using an iPhone for 3 years, I could use something really big. Plus if that ad that was true and the Titan will be released as BOGO so I can get one for myself and my fiancee it is a done deal.

Will definitely check both of them out though, as long as we get some info sooner before later.

I'm probably going to get the Titan or the Focus S, but I'm getting pretty frustrated at the lack of concrete release date for the Titan and any info at all on the Focus S.

Look, I don't want to make excuses for Nokia, I don't get paid for that, but how long was HTC actively working on those two phones (two, down from five last year) and how much time had Nokia to develop a new phone for a new platform and hardware? If you don't see the difference, then I'm sorry.

Now the whole story with AT&T (or other carriers for that matter), is a total fuck up. AT&T announced three Windows Phones. No date, pics or price. Apple announced the iPhone 4S two weeks ago and sold already 4M of them.

Just how much can you fuck up a "re-launch" of a platform?

Mango phones are already all over Europe, but nobody seems to have one. We seem to get some reviews for the HTC devices, but it's not a big push like last year.

Okay, "all over Europe" was probably a bit exaggerated. In the UK, Orange is offering the Radar next to the Mozart (and makes it look a bit worse), but it's not in stock yet. O2 has only the HD7 and Mozart and phones4u is selling the Titan and Radar with an operator contract of your liking (except for O2, who probably pulled all the WP7 connections). In France, SFR is only selling the Omnia 7, Orange has nothing as far as I can tell and I don't think I want to look at the other countries.

I've decided my first smart phone will be by Nokia. At first I was just gonna get an HTC or Samsung win7 phone but I'm going with Nokia. The build quality takes a dump on both HTC and Samsung and I'll feel unique because nobody will have it.

My money is also on the table for a Windows Phone 7. Android has left a bad taste in my mouth after dealing with a Droid Eris(I know, don't blame the OS for a shit phone) for two years. Even going to switch from Verizon to AT&T because I am almost certain that Verizon isn't getting a phone before December 8th, which is when my contract runs up. But I am so damn fed up with my Eris that I might go iPhone and stay at Verizon if information about Mango phone release dates doesn't get released.

Just read a review about the Titan and their biggest complaints are no flash(people still complain about this?), no additional storage, and no consolidation of multiple Google calendars. Storage I can get, but those other 2 causing you to say the OS is inept is pretty crazy. They are also still dinging MS for releasing WP7 in a state that was lacking many important features even after Mango for a review of current hardware. Why exactly does that matter at this point in time?

Also Nokia has the "I am the old star and now try to come back" aura.

Multiple calendars support is there. Gmail just has an arbitrary restriction that you can get around.

I don't see the difference. HTC's focus is on the Android phones and they still managed to cook up AT LEAST two new phones this year with wildly different form factors. Even then, they can take one phone (HTC Titan) and make both Windows Phone AND Android versions. Nokia's focus is (and has been all year essentially) on Windows Phone. If that entire company can't put new internals on an existing design in less than 10 months, then MS has picked the wrong partner. This is inexcusable. The software needs minor tuning once you have the right internals, a fact demonstrated by everyone using the stock beta mango without any device-specific modifications and basically no widespread issues for several months. So it comes down to basically fitting the MS required internals into the N9 frame. Shit should've been out by now.

edit: If the Nokia 800 (that's what the WP7 N9 will be called, right?) is announced next week and ships in early November to the US, I'll be happy with that.

The first Windows Phone is manufactured by Compal, so it's probably China.

They have orders in with Foxconn as well, apparently. They do the iPhone/iPad, so not quite "crappy" China heh

I think it's time for MS to just make their hardware like they do for the Xbox. By this, I mean just have Nokia exclusively make Windows Phones for MS. I used to think that the current strategy was a good idea - hybrid of closed OS (iOS) and open hardware (Android) (well, somewhat), but MS not able to deliver a cohesive marketing message due to their need to juggle multiple, slow hardware manufacturers makes me think that MS should use the Apple approach with Nokia making the phones.

I agree.

Van, I have a cold and still a lot of work to do, so I'm not really in the mood to discuss this right now. Despite your tag, you're a great discussion partner and I don't want to post something in the wrong tone. I hope it's okay that we'll have to agree to disagree on this point. Maybe I'm overestimating the time it takes to develop, test and ship a mobile phone for multiple carriers and countries. I know we have a (former?) Nokia employee here on GAF. It would be great if he could help us out here.

A couple of things...

1. The entire company isn't devoted to a single product, that wouldn't make sense. Not to mention, throwing more and more people on a project doesn't necessarily make the project complete quicker, it more than likely would have adverse effects

2. HTC has the benefit of having used the very similar hardware for the last 3 years. They have relationships with the suppliers, familiarity with the hardware itself, and software and tools they can reuse. In contrast, Nokia has had absolutely nothing to do with Qualcomm in the past, well... outside of a bunch of legal battles.

3. Nokia doesn't really have any relationship with carriers in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the reasons that we won't be seeing any phones in the US initially. Not to mention, dealing with stuff like the FCC can take time as well.

Don't underestimate what it takes to bring a product to market. It is MUCH harder to get things started than it is to keep them going. If Nokia has a product shipping in November then they have done an amazing job, considering the partnership was decided back in the February time frame. Taking a product from inception to market in 9 months isn't bad at all.

I'm still of the opinion that WP7 is a pivot to Windows 8. I think it's more about selling the future than selling devices at this point.

If Apollo is a bucket of fail, I'll be worried.

That said, I'd really like to see the new phone come out today so I can grab a Focus for cheap to hold me over until Apollo. I got a Veer during the HP firesale, but my wife's Focus is a much more polished experience.

Please no. One of the best things about WP is the ability to have different devices.

New crowd sourced Nokia ringtone, infused with some dubstep.

Yeah, seems about right.
I’m pretty sure he was only the winner of the competition. Nokia would decide for them self if they were going to use it or not.

Today I was walking down the street. Headphones on. My phone spoke to me.
"Message from Terrence."
"Read."
"I'm coming to football. Let the boys know."
"Ok, I'll see you there."
"Sent".

I felt like a Wizard.

oh crap I was thinking 4.3 Focus s but this has me thinking twice.

Software

The Windows Phone OS is an amazing experience at this screen size. Sure, we don't have the resolution needed to cram loads of shrunken live tiles into our home screen, but that's not what this OS is about. The overall aesthetic is one of minimalism, boldness and space to breathe, and spreading those tiles and apps over 4.7 inches takes this to another level. We have never felt so calm and relaxed when using a smartphone. Whether we're searching for media, loading up Bing to recognize a music track, or bashing out an email, the experience is serene.

I agree with a lot of the comments above and MS really needs to get on their game. I've lost 2 friends to the 4S after holding out for new Windows Phones, and honestly, I can't blame them.

Hate pitching this in here, but I doubt I would get any responses in the B/S/T thread.

Last call for my Focus. Not in perfect condition, but selling it for $120 shipping included. PM if interested. Have (1) feedback on GAF.

The Nokia phones will be made in Finland or crappy China?
Nokia has only one production plant in Finland which makes only the most expensive phones. At least 95% of the stuff is made somewhere else.

OMG I'm so hyped for Nokia World on the 26th! Keep refreshing the thread just to read stuff about Mango and the new phones. If we get the Sea Ray before the end of the year in the U.S. which is basically an N9 re-branded with Mango I'll be so happy. The N9 imo is THE BEST looking phone on the planet and also the best build quality. It's a design and engineering gift from Zeus himself. I hope they keep the aesthetics as close to possible to the N9

I'm sure this 6 day old Engadget article was posted already but just in case:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/11/first-nokia-800-ads-spotted-announcing-the-arrival-wp7-for-finn/

So they're going to rename it the Nokia 800.

anyone getting the zune C00D124D error? happens when i try to sync my phone to zune via usb cable, which i never had issues with before the mango update. looks like i'll have to subscribe to podcast via phone until this issue is resolved.
