Nokia changes the font on their WP7 phones....

Nokia Windows Phones to use "Pure" Font

After Long Zheng saw those first press-shots of the Nokia 800 Windows Phone that is expected to be announced next week, he noticed that the images are using Nokia's "Pure" font style for the text as opposed to Microsoft's usual Segoe font originally designed for Windows Phone. As we know, Nokia has special privileges when it comes to modifying the Windows Phone operating system due to their deal with Microsoft. Changing the font to something more in tune with Nokia's branding is a subtle way to really differentiate Nokia's Windows Phones without fragmenting or deterioriating the Windows Phone design too much.

Ugggh

hopefully you can change it back....probably not though. Leave the OS to the professionals, do what you do best nokia, make phones. The one thing i hate about andriod is now in Windows Phone, booooo.

I don't think changing the font to match the Nokia branding is that big a deal, especially since both fonts have similar properties (honestly, I wouldn't even have noticed).

Hardly like the skinning clusterfuck happening on Android.

Give somebody an inch and they'll take a mile.

Segoe looks better, but Pure isn't offensive. I'm surprised Microsoft let them do this.

Are there font customization options in WP7?

I think fonts are hugely important. You'll be seeing it a ton every single day, and if it isn't aesthetically pleasing, it adversely affects the overall user experience. Can you imagine using a phone with Comic Sans as the default system font?

I'm actually "ok" with the fonts, although that lowercase G will haunt me forever, but I'm mostly pissed about the numbers and how they're like, italicized. WHYYYYY

There better be a font setting, Nokia.

Nokia is literally taking a shit on Microsoft by substituting the Segoe font. I'd call off the whole deal if it was me.

You just don't do that.

IMO, the searay 800 is just a teaser. Nokia's gotta reveal a hero device from their top of the line 900 series.

Just curious, what would you expect the major difference to be? Better camera?

oh, jet car stunts is a good game, worth the $3.
I like good games for $3.
I'd like good games that the iPhone didn't get TWO YEARS AGO more, though.

I look forward to playing Jet Car Stunts 2 in the year 2015.

700 series was the low end, 800 was the mid range, and 900 was the top of the line. I remember nokia mentioning this before.

how can nokia improve on the searay? a bigger screen (4-5"), a better camera (1080p video is a norm for hero phones now), and no skimping on build materials.

Agreed... I bet the 900 will be similar to the first leak they ever put out. 4.5 inch screen, 32 gig of storage, better camera, maybe metal casing, etc (I expect them all to have the same processor/ram).... they really need a phone to compete with the new nexus ics/other large screen android phones.

I guess I feel like a phone is only as good as the processors powering it. I don't see screen size, memory, or even camera as something that differentiates mid range from high range. Also, 1080p video isn't possible on the Snapdragon 8X55 :/

I feel like they should stick to the 8XX range until things open a bit and they can make a true flagship.

Most of the Engadget comments are very positive about the look in case anyone was wondering what the general audience might think

Boom. Winner.

The bezel doesn't look as extreme in this angle. This design is everything I want for Windows Phone. Sleek, minimalist, metallic (?) body. I'd probably want one in black, but I can definitely see this design lending itself well to some cool colors.

Some people say it looks like a giant ipod nano. I disagree. This design evokes classic Nokia for me.

This is what Windows Phone needs. Yeah, it's cool and all that 3rd parties can licence the OS and put it on a range of devices. But WP7 needs a sleek, iconic handset to be the face of OS.

It's polycarbonate.

Probably doesn't need a case since scratches won't show as it's the same color all the way through the material.

It is what wp7 needs but we need a whole range of these devices... wp7 needs the "hero" phone for the low end, mid range (where I see this device landing), and the large screen high end phone.

Why are people saying that bezel is huge? I mean...technically the black takes up alot of area, but it blends into the rest of the phone so it's not like it's all bezel.

Not used to how the windows phone home screen looks, I'd guess.

The only real surprise from the press shots are the multiple colors. And to play my favorite role here, Debbie Downer, I suggest you guys should compare the N9 and 800 renders. What's missing?

E: Also, I can't get that Nokia, I just can't. It has a pentile matrix display and I have to be consistent!

I find the app switching in Windows 8 terrible. When I want to go from app A to app E, I have to go all the way through B, C and D. It's slow annoying and inefficient. it works better with a mouse, where you can scroll through the apps with a wheel (kinda like a mini flip 3d).

They should do something more expose like. I agree that right now it does not look efficient.

EDIT: Those Nokia shots look sick.

Is it a FFC?

I can't imagine them doing something that dumb, we'll see though haha.
Yeah, Nokia and Microsoft doing something dumb? Two big and grown up companies like them? Impossible ... :lol

Remember that leaked video from the prototype? The user goes into the camera app and there's no button to switch to a FFC. I thought or hoped it might've been the lower end device from the 700 series or just not final software, but the renders don't show one either.

Here's the N9 render
http://cdn.esphoneblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Nokia-N9-Lankku-Cayan-official.jpg

I went all CSI on that picture with my ipad and if you look hard enough, you can see the FFC.

Here's the leaked pocket now render, which is really just a shopped version of that N9 render (and that makes sense)
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/nokia-800-blue.jpg

That said, they are just renders after all and don't have to expose all the tiny details. Since it's just a shop, it could've been removed by mistake.

It's not just that. The top and bottom have so much unused space. I think it looks good though, but I personally prefer screens that take up more of the front.
