Windows Phone 7 |OT|

I think I'll get the Omnia 7. €550 w/o contract. unlocked and 16GB. The Optimus 7 is still less than €400, but it's a tad too cheap (God, that home button ...) and since I love the OLED screen of my Zune HD I don't think I can go back. Fuck Dell and the Venue Pro.

btw, I think it's kinda funny how everyone, including me, bitched about the phones before the launch and how ugly they were. I even called the Omnia 7 'Samsung Brick' and the Focus 'really ugly' and now they're among the best WP7 devices you can get.

:O

I'm alright with 8GB.. but I wouldn't have minded to have another 8 :lol

So isn't the Venue Pro supposed to be selling at Dell today...?

Don't hold your breath, some whisper that it's been delayed

I'd get it with 8GB if I could and it was cheaper. I'll still use my Zune HD for my music needs.
Did you ever get a phone? I know you were dying to spend your cash over the weekend! LOL :P

Has there been any confirmation that T-Mobile (USA) has killed their plus plans or whatever it's called? The ones that have no contract and involve a $20 discount over the equivalent standard plans?

Assuming it doesn't suck (and ever releases), I'm quite interested in the Dell. If the corresponding T-Mobile plan doesn't involve a discount however, I don't see how I can justify buying the phone at full price.

Also, can you hide/remove the hideous X-Box live tile?

Yeah, but there was this little shitty voice in my head that said I should be more reasonable. And even you guys told me I should wait! D: I still have my crappy Diamond and it gets me though the day, so there's no need to rush (as long as I avoid carrier stores and demo units :P).

And Brettison, two things for ya. Check the fucking OP for errors and next time you do a video, give me a shout out (for stealin' my pictures for your review! :P)

Yes, you remove it from the first page. It will remain in the "All Apps" list - but without the avatar jumping around.

Note: Games show up under here and not as their own app.

No confirmation... but they're gone from the website.. they've been moved under "Pre-Paid" and there's now a 2GB data limit...

$70/ for unlimited talk & text and 2GB of data isn't too bad..

Is there anything that you thought was missing, moving from an iPhone or an android phone?

Coming from an iPhone, the only thing I'm really missing is a way to add favorites to the map, or to store a contact's address as a search/directions bookmark, but that's pretty minor really.

I know how brotkasten feels. I don't even know why I'm always in this topic :lol I'm not getting a WP7 phone until September next year most likely.

On the subject of maps, I don't believe Bing Maps on WP7 has public transit yet so if you use that as often as I do on Google Maps for iPhone / Android, you're out of luck.

Seriously.... the handsets coming out in about 8-9 weeks for this OS are going to be amazing. It's really going to be hard to wait.

Yeah, would be nice to have some more variation as well as OS improvements by the time I get it. Although that'll also make the wait even harder x.x I think I would have broken down and bought a phone if the Venue Pro was available to me :lol

Someone made an app using the Google info. I believe it's called public transit and it's free.

Just spent some time with an HD7; very impressive. Right away I notice the phone accomplished something no Android phone I've used has: the UI is buttery smooth, quick and responsive with no slight hitching or stuttering. It's right up there with the iPhone in that regard.

I think the design choices of the UI work really well, and give it a more unique look and feel than either the iPhone or any if the various flavors of android I've used.

Just overall very nice to see in person. If the apps, games and multitasking work themselves out it's definitely something I will consider when my contract is up in a year and a half. Excited to see how it's evolved by then.

Yeah. The features they are packing into the update coming pre-CES is pretty impressive from what I've heard.

Well, the one cool feature that is missing right now is turn-by-turn navigation, but the current rumor is that it will be in the first big update in January with copy/paste. :D

Eh I never made a comment about the OP cause there wasn't any errors that I saw. :D

UI is all down to the fact that MS mandated a certain minimum hardware and then leveraged the OS to have GPU acceleration. I'll be honest. I'm not sure they could have done what they are currently doing a year or two ago.

If you read the last few replies there is bing maps, but not built in turn by turn. It's supposedly rumored in the big January update.
Yeah I've played with the Bing one- its pretty average. I was meaning more like showing street views- like the close up view GPS devices show.

Ended up going with the Surround for the build quality. Shame too, 'cause the AMOLED screen was pretty amazing. The Surround has a nice screen too, though, and I think it'll end up with better battery life anyway. God the UI is slick. So can't wait to see where this goes in the next couple of years.

So according to a member of the WPCentral forums, the first update will be quite nice. Since it's just a forum story by a new member, take it with a ton of salt.

Hey guys,

So today at work, I got a surprise visit from a WP7 employee. He wasnt one of those "reps" that know nothing, he was a real microsoft employee, and we chatted for hours about the new phones and software. He said he was going to a few stores and retailers to see what kind of response we were getting. He said he was looking for feedback to send to the developers to know what exactly they should work on.

I asked him a lot of the general questions and this is what he said:

(note: all this stuff seems preliminary so do not take this as 100%)

q: Why isn't there an option to add custom ringtones?

a: Microsoft is working on an application that will be included in an update in january which will allow the consumer to edit, customize, and add ringtones of their choice. This app will also include a user "library" to search and download ringtones.

q: copy and paste. What are you guys doing about that?

a: they are working on a smart and simple way to add copy and paste functionality which should be included with the january update.

q: why cant you use zune pass on your phone?

a: I honestly do not know. that should have been a feature at launch (or so i was told) and am not sure the status on that.

q: what about turn by turn navi?

a: we are beta testing it right now. again, ETA january.

thats really it. not really new information, but i thought some of you would like to know. we also talked a lot about what makes a smartphone successful, and stuff I'd like to see in the future such as being able to use your WP7 device as a remote for your computer/xbox 360 and others which i forgot about.

Oh, and yeah ... Surprise, surprise everyone. The HTC 7 Trophy has a MicroSD card slot.

Okay stopped at a T-Mobile store to get a few answers and test WP7.

First off - Even More Plus plans. They still had pamphlets for the plans on full display and when I questioned an attendant on availability, he said they are still a go. I mentioned the website issue and he stated he was aware of it but they are still available. While I didn't directly ask, he implied he wasn't aware of any impending cancellation of the plans. Granted he may not be in a position to have any foreknowledge so take it how you will.

They had an HD7 available so I requested if I could test it out. Well the attendant went to turn it on ... and it was dead :lol. Battery life FTL. Anyway he plugged it in, handed it off, and walked away so I could beat on it. In a word (well ... phrase)? Holy shit!!! I am ALL ABOUT this UI. The speed, responsiveness, bounce ... everything comes together in a way that feels like an extension of your hand. It's like a mini Minority Report interface :p. I particularly like how the hubs have a bit of the adjacent material on display. Makes it feel like you are are scrolling over a large row of data that exists in some virtual world - interacting with it through a view finder.

I will say though, that thing I complained about earlier? About wanting a lefty mode for the main screen? Yeah, it actually really does annoy the shit about me in real life :lol. The fact my thumb blocks half the tiles when scrolling is pretty frustrating. Still though, I'm pretty pumped and plan on definitely going with a WP7.

Jesus Christ as I'm typing this I just saw another commercial. Even if shipments were botched I've got to hand it to MS regarding the ad campaign. There were commercials on all weekend.
...
[EDIT]and there's a second one lol[/EDIT]
[/RANDOM]

I do have one question though. Does anyone know if the Dell is '4G' (HSPA+)?

Turn by turn nav would be big as IMO it's one of the big selling points for Google with their OS. Built in turn by turn that's free. Good to hear they are working on ringtones as well along with copy and paste like we all know.

PS: This is assuming that info is true which it may or may not be. Doesn't sound crazy though.

I played with a Surround at Future Shop today. The phone is pretty nice and the screen is not bad at all, not as fancy as my Galaxy S but it actually looked a bit sharper. Anyway I absolutely love the interface.. Jesus H Christ its so smooth and seemless. It was a joy to navigate around.. There was no sim or wifi so I could not check out much. The keyboard is a dream, as good if not better than iOS, heads and shoulders above the one on my Galaxy S. I really want to jump in but I think I will wait and see what these Sony phones are like. The only choices we have in Canada right now are the Surround and LG Optimus 7 on Telus, LG Quantam on Bell, and Samsung Focus on Rogers. After my experience with a dead Galaxy S I am not touching another Samsung phone. The Quantam is pretty crap looking. I like the Surround but have no need for the speaker or stand. Not sure about the Optimus, I like the look of it the best to be honest but I have heard the screen is very weak. Havent seen it working, only the dummy. Frustrating to have to wait.. I want one now! :lol

Heh ... really good product placement in Castle.

Actual clever use of it versus the terrible usage in Bones. Cinematographer still went overboard on the long pause, but at least the scene made sense and was in character.

And now, a WP7 commercial immediately upon break :lol

Does anyone have any RSS reader recommendations yet? I've tried a few, but they're all either seeming to miss some key feature, or something else like that.

Basically, I'm looking for something that works almost identically to Byline on the iPhone:

-Syncs with Google Reader
-Full support of categories/individual feed listings
-Star items in one tap (no context menus - I star a ton of stuff, context menus are way too slow)
-Need ability to mark all as read, or mark all in an individual category/feed as read
-Ability to cache the entire linked site for reading offline later, configurable to make it do this only for starred items

really glad i went with the HD7 rather than wait for the venue pro, considering the wifi issues of the units sold and the delay. i am really loving my HD7 more and more, and yes the battery life is better after a week of usage but still bad due to me trying to play twin blades, harvest, flight control, and omg every moment i can. the ear buds included are actually very good, but lack the deep bass that premium earphones have.

there are a few things you can do to extend batt life, set the screen to time out to 30-60 seconds, and set out your email accounts to update 1-2 hours. you can even extend life further by setting email accounts to manually update and turning location awareness off.

I was sorta in the same boat and ended up going with Wave Reader. Syncs with Google, but doesn't cache, I don't think. Seems to have everything else and it's nice and simple, goes perfect with Metro.

So, are there any good sources for slick wallpapers? Kinda tired of the stock ones and don't have any I'd like to use.

Any tips for getting my new phone to work with the Zune software? For whatever reason it won't recognize it, no matter how many times I restart everything.

Dumb but are you sure your zune software is up to date?

I'm kind of excited to see how they will expand on the People Hub. It'd be cool to see if they add an API to let other applications plug in (i.e. blogs, yelp, other social networks). Seems like it'd also be the perfect place for instant messenger integration.

Do you have the latest version of Zune software?

edit:beaten

Anno said:
I literally just downloaded it from Zune.net. That said I can't find a definitive version number.

If you go to settings ---> software -----> general.... there should be an "about zune" button which would tell you your version number...

you want 4.7...

what does it do when you plug your phone in?

Yep, 4.7.14something or another.

Does my phone have to be registered or something? I just picked it up tonight and may not have finished everything.

Are you signed into Windows Live in Zune, and did you complete the registration stuff when you 1st turn on your phone?!?!

Also is your phone on? It needs to be on to sync.
