The challenges are obviously stacked towards the os' strength, but since it was built for everyday tasks, the result is that the challenges are actually very reasonable. You SHOULD be able to quickly check the weather, post status updates, upload pics, find restaurants and identify songs on the radio. You can't argue those are things people don't do on their phones.

Yeah, but I think most of the users certainly do much more than that, because you don't need a dual-core CPU and 1 GB RAM to update your status and post pictures on facebook.

"Coming months" for the US/AT&T and nothing about a WW release. Maybe we get some news at MWC next month.

Love the intergration. It is my wifes birthday and there was a facebook event she created. I accepted and now the event is on my calender. Clicking on the event in my calender I can then respond, see the wall posts, see the guests attending all the without entering a dedicated app.

i'd set up a "how long can you stay connected to IRC" test. to a SSL BNC, of course... ;)

Unfortunately, there is no API for integration into Me, People, or Messaging hubs yet. I really hope this comes to Apollo, but I can see how it might not since it seems like everything goes through Windows Live. We'll see.

Yes sir, that's a good everyday test. Along with how quickly can you:

-flash a new rom
-remove the disgusting oem launcher
-kill running apps that are slowing down your phone and killing your battery
-select one of five photo apps to view your pictures with when you click on them

IRC is an everyday test for me. moreso than Facebook, that's for sure!

i guess i could go with a simpler test... like record a 1080p HD video and upload it to Youtube...

Do you have to change or charge your battery while you do that?

At my work I can spot Android phone because they are usually tethered to power socket. But you know the Androids users don't used their phones for mundane tasks like posting to social network, check weather or messaging. They are directing feature film in 1080p and managing their apps.
 
You know that a product is getting popular, when fanboys from other products visit the OT frequently, to discuss the shortcomings of that product. It's a good sign.
 
Is there anything like the iPod on the go playlists in Zune? I think I'll have to keep my iPod Touch for several reasons:

-A lack of functionalities like said playlists.
-There seems be a lot of music missing from the marketplace compared to iTunes.
-What's up with no podcasts being available on the marketplace?
-16 GB without the possibility of an upgrade is really not enough space compared to the 64 GB on my iPod.

Apart from the battery issues, lack of Skype and other apps, Zune is probably the most disappointing aspect of my Lumia.

That's seems strange to me, Zune (although I still use my Zune HD instead of the phone) is the reason I no longer use my iPod.

Are iPod "on the go playlists" similar to Smart DJ? I find that 90% of the time that is how I use Zune; I find an artist (or even better a song) that I feel like listening to and I use Smart DJ to immediately create a 30 song playlist of similar songs. While I do get the odd song that doesn't really fit, the vast majority work quite well.

That's true actually. One of the benefits of using my Zune HD instead of my Focus is that I use my US Zune account on the HD instead of my Canadian account on the phone.

It is annoying that Zune in Canada on the phone doesn't have the bio's etc. Something like that can't be that complicated to fix.

I imagine it's less to do with a "fix" and more to do with some sort of licensing restrictions or something of that matter. That data isn't provided by Microsoft, it is licensed from allmusic.

I know what you mean. My corporate plan is with Rogers so I'd rather not try and cancel it, but I would really like them to get some of the newer phones... and the 710 doesn't count.

I was trying to figure out what it would cost me to cancel my contract with Rogers. I will be coming up 1 year soon. I imagine it would be around $500/600 dollars. I would probably be better off just buying an unlocked phone and continue to use my Rogers SIM.

I don't think it would be that high, but it still might be better to buy unlocked after you factor in the subsidized price and new contract as well.

Yeah. I will probably try an unlocked phone at some point. I believe the 800 works with Rogers EDGE and HSPA and I imagine the 900 will too.
 
Just unlock a Telus Lumia 800 or the 900 once it's out and use it on Rogers... Telus, Bell, and AT&T all use exactly the same frequencies as Rogers. If it's from one of those providers it'll work.

Rogers is apparently moving towards making cancellation fees across Canada the same as they currently are in Quebec. So this means they'll just take the outright price of your handset, divide it by contract length (36 in most cases) and each month subtract that from your cancellation fee.

So if you bought an iPhone 4 for $160 in August 2011, that's $660 - $160 = $500 / 36 = $13.89 for each month remaining on your contract. You'd have to pay $391.67 to cancel now under those rules. Under the current rules you'd have to pay $400 for voice and $100 for data for a total of $500.

According to the internal Microsoft documentation I've viewed, the total cost of this marketing tsunami is in the neighborhood of $200 million, not $100 million. And again, that's just for the United States. And on AT&T at least, Nokia is outspending Microsoft 2-to-1.

I totally agree about Zune being disappointing, the library in the UK is terrible, anything not on the chart basically doesn't exist. The only real solution is Spotify Premium, which is amazing to be fair.

The podcast stuff you can get round, you subscribe on PC (works on the mac connector too) and then the phone will sync episodes from the marketplace, even though it tells you they aren't available if you try to browse. And if it's ever being slow syncing when you know there's a new episode you can just go back into the settings (on the phone), confirm them, and it will refresh straight away.
