Oh boy, I made the mistake of plugging in my phone into my work computer to charge because I forgot the brick, and now I have the dreaded "space reserved for content on another computer" taking up precious space on my Focus. Anybody know a quick way to get rid of that?

zombies and brain challenge released tonight. anyone got any impressions yet?

Downloading Zombies now! It's been my most anticipated game thus far. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint!

*Edit* First time ever playing Zombies (didn't play the board game), but it's getting very addicting! The trial cuts you off before you can finish, so I bought it just so I can see how it ends. It doesn't feel like it's rock solid at 30fps and does feel slightly choppy. Definitely not a dealbreaker, but something I hope the WP7 update can help alleviate, or that they patch later.

Just got an email from Windows Phone Insider:

Nope.

Oh, and further update on Zombies... It's a great game, if you're a fan of board game style games. The board changes every time you play making each play session unique. Sometimes you'll have the buildings you need close to each other, and then can make a break for the helicopter, or else for other games, everything will be so scattered that you will likely die multiple times going anywhere. It really does make this game fun. :lol

I'm hoping that IF there's a sequel, that they release it after MS hopefully eventually allows real-time multiplayer. This game would be great for that, but pass and play is probably good for most people for now.

On that note, I'm a bit bummed that there's been no rumors or anything about allowing real-time multiplayer. It seems that's something that we hopefully can get in 2012.

Zooming and scrolling through the picture gallery is your proof of speed? I have to wonder if that is even Android's gallery rather than Motorolas. My Hero was choppy like that but not my EVO. And I thought actually opening apps was unusually slow on WP7?

Hope this doesn't come off too trolly, I'll be trying WP7 next most likely (using iPhone now). Just this article seems to really be pinpointing a specific instance that does show off WP7 smoothness. It seems to match iOS which is a huge feat. However as a user of Android and iOS I can say that consistent UI fluidity doesn't mean the phone is faster overall, especially with 3rd party apps.

Third party apps are slower to open than Android or IOS. Much, much slower the second time around since the apps aren't stored in memory like the other two. So, for example twitter takes about 7 seconds to load up EVERY SINGLE TIME you load it up versus instant on the other two once its in memory. On the other hand first party stuff like the browser, pictures, and music load really quickly and flow more smoothly than either of the other two platforms. Its a really jarring contrast that will only partially be rectified with the first update, whenever it arrives.

And if they follow the Apple model (and to a lesser extent the Google model) these first Gen phones may not run the version of the os that loads third party apps into memory to support multi tasking.

I'm really getting sad about the online multiplayer situation on WP7, but to be honest I played Galcon on iPhone once or twice online.

I need some turn by turn soon. I play turn by turn games on yucata.de for all my super nerdy board games. You think Zombies is an obscure board game, I'd love to see a version of Egizia (now THAT's obscure ;P).

Well the developers could do better too. Twitter for iPhone (née Tweetie) had saved app state and fast loading even before Apple brought multitasking to the platform last year. Developers still have to make sure their apps are multitasking aware for iOS and they've more or less done so. Yes, it's still Microsoft's responsibility to provide the proper platfoapp but Twitter also has the resources to work around WP7's restrictions. I don't see why the Twitter app always has to reload after unlocking the screen, for example.

You would have a fantastic point if it was just the twitter app that loaded slowly. That was just a random example, I could've picked just about any other third party app on my phone.

So my contract is up this Friday, and it's come down to a Samsung Focus or a iPhone 4. I'm really heavily leaning toward getting a WP7 phone just because I don't want to be another one of the herd at work. No one I work with has one, instead 99% have iPhone's of various flavors, and one has an Android phone. I've messed with them all, and demo'd the Focus at an AT&T store, and I really like the WP7 setup.

Now that they've been out a while, how does everyone feel about their WP7 phone, and do you have any regrets?

If you are at all interested in a music subscription service you will be 150% satisfied with a Focus. ZunePass is amazing. I never got into downloading ten free apps a day so I don't miss any of that from iPhone.

Go for it. Gaming is getting better and better, the application selection is improving and you'll love the Focus. Maybe wait until after the Spring update is released, or jump in now and upgrade when it's released?

I have the Dell Venue Pro, and although I didnt expect much (Many complaints of the phone messing up, Early WP7, My own doubts) I am REALLY impressed.

If the new update really has improved app tombstoning, maybe fake multitasking like iOS, it will be perfect. Once MS gets rolling on updating Bing Search, turn by Turn and SmartDial, There would almost be no need for me to ever upgrade ever again.

Although updates have been slow (Android and iOS had some pretty decent upgrades by now) I'd still say that my WP7 experience has been pretty damn good.

Although it seems that way, its just not true. Android didn't have an update in 4 months and IOS didn't have a significant update (added functionality) until 3 months later. Windows phone 7 has been on the market for just two months in north America. It'll have its first update by next month, or month 3.

The G1 released with software version 1.0 on Feb 9th. 1.5 was released April 30th. A bit under 3 months.

iOS might not have had significant features being released in its first couple of months, but it had several bugs fixed. WP7 has a lot of bugs that need squashing, including E-mail attachments, camera settings, Alarms, and lots and lots of crashing. I've encountered all of these in the past few days of owning the DVP.

The g1 released in October in the US. The iPhone updates before the September 27th one consisted of a browser security fix and some nasty bugs that deleted content. I don't know of any wp7 bug that is as vicious as any of that.

Thanks guys, I think you've pushed me over the edge. I have my iPad for iOS stuffs, so I might as well jump on the WP7 train and hang out for a few. Thanks :)

What do you do when an app keeps failing to download and say "Attention required"? Restarting the download/canceling and trying again don't seem to work.

Most likely the app is too big and needs to be downloaded over wifi. If you click on the "Attention required" does it give more detail?

Nope, just lets me retry or cancel.

WiFi did the trick though, thanks. This probably explains why I couldn't update certain apps also.

How about some (non-)news? :D

iFixit took the HTC Surround apart and they revealed an internal class 4 MicroSD card.

You are a Windows Phone 7 enthusiast who lives in the UK? You're totally interested in Dell's Venue Pro? Sucks to be you! :lol
The online retailer Clove reports on their blog that Dell delayed the long awaited phone once again. However, this time it seems that Dell is not the one to blame.
At the moment it looks like the delay is being caused by a Microsoft issue with the MMS settings.
The first shipment for the UK should now arrive in mid-February.

Neowin reports that Voice-over-IP is probably on its way to WP7 and it seems to be part of the Facetime competitor that Microsoft is building for WP.
Microsoft seems to be using Voice over IP technologies (VoIP), and the functionality is already built into the platform, further supporting the claims that the company is working on such a features.
...

The registry keys "VoIP" and "SIP" are hidden inside the "ControlPanel" portion of the registry, and both seem to be set to be off (by having "0" under their "Enabled" value). It's worth noting that for some reason, these keys are in a portion of the registry that contains other features that are fundamental to the platform, such as theme colors.
Neowin: Windows Phone 7 might get VoIP as part of "Facetime" competitor

Attention, homebrew people! The ChevronWP7 team, responsible for the unlock hack, confirmed that Microsoft will close the security hole in the first system update. That means the unlocker won't work anymore and you can't sideload any apps anymore. But don't rage yet, because there might be a glimpse of hope.
The ChevronWP7 developers will meet with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 team next week and hope to discuss the ''homebrew potentials of Windows Phone 7 and some of the wider community feedback around the platform''.
I'm not very optimistic about that, but we'll see.
Neowin: Windows Phone unlocking to be disabled by first update

And last but not least, something interesting for our Canadian member(s). :D
Bell is getting the HTC HD7 on February 10th.
Here’s some good news for today. Thanks to a number of our tipsters for letting us know that Bell will be releasing the Windows Phone 7 powered HTC HD 7 – the targeted release date is set for February 10th. Unfortunately we have not been given pricing yet but a high-end WP7 device is coming. This will be the second Windows Phone 7 device that Bell will launch, the first was the LG Optimus Quantum.
Bell to release the HD7

And that's it for now.

I'll post later some other stuff in the App recommendation thread and WP7 gaming thread.

I got this game today and it is very fun (but then again I tend to enjoy boardgame). The problem with on-line multiplayer is that the game do take a long time to play and my experience with Xbox live is unless you have a group of friends then people tends to leave. But having an option is never a bad thing, and it is sad to not see multiplayer game get implement on Live platform.

The game stutter a bit but overall it's not bad (also fonts are small so it's hard to read sometimes).

Some app require wifi to download especially big games or app. I usually download game via Zune app as it seems to give me the least problem with app not wanting to install after download.

On a side note... I'd kill for Blizzard to give us a legit copy of the Authenticator...

Think I might just end up buying one from the store so my shit doesn't get hacked. :/

Look who's still alive and kicking. :D

I managed to get hold of an Asus Windows Phone 7 today, and got some (blurry) pictures of the phone. After playing around with the device for a few minutes I found that it did indeed sport the rumored AMOLED display. It also has 5.2mp camera and a design similar to that of the Zune HD. We’ll just have to hold our breathes and wait and see when this device is coming to the market.

OmniTechNews: Asus Windows Phone 7 Spotted in the Wild (again)

I wouldn't call that "a design similar to that of the Zune HD", but it's cool to see that other devices are still on the way.

btw, if you want to send some feedback about Windows Phone 7 to Microsoft, read this:

And hey, lets not forget our Windows Phone 7 App Discussion/Recommendation Thread.

Well, I went ahead and took advantage of the $0.01 Samsung Focus on Amazon. This will be my first smart phone, so I'm pretty excited. Should have it next week.

PS: Anybody know how this whole contract thing works when re-upping via Amazon? Do I have to contact ATT or anything like that, or will my ATT account just reflect the new plan?

I up my contract via Costco, and I think they are like BestBuy, Walmart are just middleman so all your new contract will just reflect on your att acccount plus data plan if you don't have one. You should be able to manage your account just the same way but you don't necessary have to contacct Att.

My suggestion is make sure you looks over the new plan to make sure everything is what you sign up for, when my wife got a phone from Best Buy last year they sign her up for navigation plan and we didn't realize it until a few months later (thus getting charge for it). And when I got my phone from Costco, the guy that sold me the phone didn't set up my voice message box.

So how's everyone liking their Windows 7 phones? Im still contemplating a Dell Venue Pro, and my iPhone 3GS's speaker is now broken so I can't actually make phone calls.

I'm just worried about the app situation, and the camera.

Right now my most used apps are
- Messaging
- Remember the Milk
- Facebook
- Twitter
- University of Florida Mobile (A life saver for my first sem here)
- Lumines
- Sports Center

I'm just afraid there wont' be incentive to create those random apps for Wp7

I love mine, but then I don't have specific app need that you do. If you need to have certain app then yeah, I would say you should just get the next iPhone.

I used to think At&T was just really bad, but since I have my Focus, the phone experience is a lot better ie no dropcall, poor signal. I am not sure if this was in part because of all the recent upgrade At&t did, or Focus is just better phone.

Quick question: is it relatively easy to snap a pic with the phone and post said pic on Twitter with a WP7 phone?

It's very very simple. Try it with Seesmic for WP7. Most of the apps support at least Twitpic and yfrog integration.
