BTW, I tossed a Micro Center brand 16gb Class 2 microSD in my Focus. I think it's working fine, I'm having some slow load times, but I'm thinking that is par for the course for splitting programs over NAND and a card.

I'm secretly hoping that the first update is addressing the problems with HTC microSD load times and that it will affect my expanded memory Focus as a side effect.

Reinstalling everything was a bit of a bear, but having all my contacts stored in the cloud is amazing. I was lamenting the backup situation in Zune, but you don't need it since you log into a couple services and your phone is up and running again.

Now I love my Optimus 7 even more. :D
The home server stuff mentioned above is awesome. My own personal media cloud. I use media center to record TV, so it would be pretty awesome to have everything at my finger tips. Will have to look into the capabilities of Vail to see if it's worth building a box. I just use a D-Link NAS set up at the moment.
I think a WHS is a good companion for Windows Media Center. Afaik all your recorded TV shows should transfer automatically to the WHS, if they're in the same network.

Yeah, I love that all contacts are in the cloud, now if MS would go a step furthur and let you save your entire phone state (setting and all) on the cloud it would be awesome and great for people that love upgrading, changing their phones.

It's ridiculous that some companies (coughAPPLEcough) don't let you save contacts to SIM. Was annoying having to Google how to get them on my BlackBerry -_-

That's seriously awesome. Good show LG.

Very cool. I have a LG Optimus 7 myself.

Want to import my SIM contacts from my previous phone with Rogers to this new phone with Telus soon. Is the process easy ?

The first Live account you sign in is permanently linked to the phone, unless you do a factory reset. You can add more live accounts but the first one will always stay there.

had a chance to use the my touch 4g and have to say, it was impressive. more so for it's updated snapdragon, hspa+, and 768mb of ram. i'll be upgrading my hd7 to a new gen wp7 phone for sure when they are release with the mango update.

But by the time that comes out wouldn't there be even newer faster phones out there? 768 sounds nice but will it even by utilized on our platform?

there are only 2 phones in the US that i know of that are hspa+, the G2 and the my touch 4G. so by the time mango comes out, hspa+ should be the norm. plus, more ram is always a good thing, especially when 3rd party multitasking comes.

It's very easy and was the first thing I did. You can do it in the people hub or later in the settings for your contacts.

You can use different Live IDs for mail, but the first Live ID you enter will be used for your contacts, Zune and Xbox Live. You can't use different IDs for that.

There's always going to be faster hardware. I just got the Focus so I may wait untl the major version release in 2012 (assuming there is one).

From my previous phone, I saved all my contacts on the SIM card because I knew I'll eventually be switching the phone. So I followed the instruction to click on Setting from the "People" section. However, the Import SIM Contact option is grayed out and un-responsive. The instruction said that could either be the phone is importing the contact already or that there is no contact on the SIM to import. I waited a bit to see if the import process is doing anything but it's not. I wonder if it's because I switched from a Rogers SIM card to a Telus SIM card ?

Can I access my office files on Skydrive with windows phone? if yes how? if not ... that's pretty lame on MS part.

edit: I figure it out... you have to sync your files. MS sure make it complicate but at least it works better than iPad when it first launch and Skydrive is free.

Since the phone you got from Telus is locked, it isn't recognizing the Rogers SIM as valid. You'll need to export the contacts to your computer and then to the phone.

So I have no access to the international Marketplace to get specific apps like Twin Blaeds :/ Fu that shit.

Yeah I just frigging manually added all the numbers in myself last night :lol Took about half an hour.

Hey WindowsPhone7GAF I need your help. I bought Corona over Zune and then I wanted to download that stuff. But I got a call from a friend. Now my Mozart showed me "Attention Required". I connected my Phone to my PC. But the download wasn't finished after 2 hours(Corona is just 51mb). I cancelled the Download and try to load it over the Marketplace on the Phone. But always it showed me "Attention required". And I really do not know how to start a download again over the Zune, because it always told me "You've already bought this app" and there is no "Download it again" option?

hey guys I am thinking of finally upgrading from my g1 with the htc 7 pro but i have one major concern the most used app i have on android the gmote which turns my phone into a mouse and keyboard so I can use my pc from anywhere in the room. I am currently sat on my sofa using my phone to type this to my pc.. does windows phone 7 have a similar app available?

Still unsure if I should jump in..

Yup, a couple. Gimme a few minutes to hunt down some screenies.

A quick marketplace search for "remote".

And what looks to be the best of the bunch from five seconds of Marketplace searching:

Thank you very much! I tried looking myself but stupidly I did not find any websites that allowed me to search so I figured I would just ask instead. I take it I need the Zune software to search through the app store? (sorry for such mundane questions, I should probably get around to reading this thread sometime this week)

Have fun.

We also have a thread for app recommendations and discussions.

btw, I'd never spend so much money on a "remote desktop" app that needs its own VNC server. I'd wait for a real RDC app.

P.S. We should hit the '6k apps' milestone tomorrow.

I need Microsoft to allow me to make my wallpaper the Bing image of the day. How much could that possibly take to implement?

I have been waiting for this as well..... have to imagine its a api issue on the device itself.

I must be reading this wrong, but for clarification are you asking that you want the image that's on the bing search used as your wallpaper, or would you want whatever image that you are using as the bing image? Because if it's the former, then there is an app call bing2wall that will do that.

Thanks for pointing that app out, I was looking for it to happen automatically when I refresh the Bing image. This will do for now.

Played The Harvest and Fruit Ninja (albeit on iPhone) already... But then again shame on me for thinking that Microsoft was going to give WP7 a PSP-like or Gameboy-like or GameGear-like focus. It's a phone first, a media device second, and a game device third

Edit: But I must say, this NES Emu is quite lovely...

Anandtech was able to shoot a comparison video between the RTM build and the first update and the improved app loading is really noticeable.
Most of this I originally attributed to being a disk I/O problem, possibly stemming from the fact that WP7 mounts NAND and storage like internal microSD cards in a big JBOD. What we learned today is that disk I/O isn't the problem, the problem is memory management and how WP7 applications load assets into memory.

Performance Improvement - App Load Time Difference
Bejweled 16.9 seconds
Fruit Ninja 6.2 seconds
ilomilo 5.1 seconds
Xbox Live Extras 8.2 seconds

We also recorded a video which really showcases the somewhat dramatic performance difference and loaded those games up, which I'll post whenever the glacially-slow WiFi here permits. The device we tested on was a Samsung Taylor running a build of WP7 versioned 7.0.7353.0. For comparison, retail WP7 devices are running 7.0.7004.0.

The WP7 performance updates really only address application load times. We were told there are other optimizations in other areas, but most are relatively minor and don't have an appreciable difference. I asked about whether JavaScript or general loading performance in the browser would see a bump and was told the update would not bring any improvements in that area.
And the Video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_u81xRu-yo

About copy and paste:
The next part of the update is of course copy and paste support. WP7's implementation looks a lot like what we expected it to - tapping on text highlights it, two triangular handles appear below, and a copy icon hovers above. Tapping that copies the selection into the clipboard. Next time you're in an appropriate field, at the far left of the autocorrect bar is a paste symbol. It's a little rough, and I wish there was a magnification effect or some cursor aide like exists in Android 2.3, but copy and paste is there.
Anandtech: Update for Windows Phone 7: Performance Improvements, Copy & Paste, CDMA

WMPowerUser reviewed BoxFiles, a DropBox client for WP7.
This app lets you access all your Dropbox files through a simple Windows Phone interface. Everything in the app now works perfectly. You can email links to any of your files, and copy, move, delete, or rename them all from your phone. Also, you can create new folders straight from the app. And even though you can’t edit documents (because of restrictions in WP7’s file management system), you can download and view Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF documents. However, you can upload pictures, and you can stream music files from your Dropbox. Also, there’s a neat Picture view section, where you can see all your pictures in thumbnail view.

And with their new update, you can also change the settings so that when you click on a file from your Dropbox, it instantly opens; while by default, you have to tap and hold the file to open it. The interface is usually fast and fluid, and follows the Windows Phone design elements really well.

Improved app loading times? Yes please. I was comparing my HTC Mozart to a Samsung phone in a store the other day. Mine was noticeable slower (and less bright).

Blame HTC for using MicroSD cards.

Anyway, I just found out that LG is using Gorilla Glass for the Optimus 7!

I'm wondering why LG isn't advertising this? Not that Gorilla Glass is really worth anything: http://twitpic.com/3otlzy (don't click, Samsung Focus users!)

Now something completely different. I hope it's okay to rant here about the lack of a good tablet OS from Microsoft, because I found this (hopefully soon to be released) news reader and Jesus, in a perfect world, where we would already have good competition in the tablet market, this Windows 7 touch enabled app with Metro UI would make so much more sense.

It's called Mosaic by Tribune and it's as Metro as a 3rd party desktop app can get.

If you excuse me, I'm gonna cry now and count my money for my iPad 2 pre-order.

The only beef I have with the Windows 7 tablets is battery life.

I'd snatch up the Asus EP121 in a heartbeat if it could get +8 hours of use.

Personally, I don't see why Microsoft doesn't simply flesh out media center more for tablet use (media center being the original 'metro'). You can boot to it and it seems much more touch friendly than the standard desktop. I'd probably use a Windows 7 tablet in media center mode most of the time.

UGH.. ok so I finally got my LG WP7 phone today from work.. brand new. Used it today and really loved it. Went to charge it tonight and .. it does not seem to be charging. Tried both via my PC and the wall. Battery indicator just simply wont go up.

Also.. is it normal for this phone to get pretty damn warm on the back?

I have been experiencing the occasional weird glitch with my phone that I didn't notice with my original (pre-stolen) one. Has anyone experienced any of this? I have a Samsung Focus.

1. Images on the start screen taking a while to load.
2. Occasionally freezing up (on start screen and in apps) and not responding to touch input for a second or two.

I'm debating taking it in for replacement under warranty.

Cool so I phone next month...yet I have to wait till July for this :(

BOOOOO!

It sucks that no one gives a a fuck about windows. I guess MS has no one to blame but themselves.

edit: I need more patience

Yep to should have launch Windows Phone 7 before iPhone on Verizon ... but yeah Microsoft.
CES 2011 was really disappointing, they got the biggest booth but the most boring stuff I think.

Yeah, that sounds busted. I have a focus with an sd and none of that happens. The only freezes I've had are on the marketplace, but we all know THATS busted for sure.

Never had this problem with my LG.

Yeah, that's what I figured. It seems like it started after I had the phone replaced, probably just got a faulty one. Hopefully it can be swapped out easy enough (meaning in store, heh).

I also have the start screen issue sometimes, where some of the 3rd party app tiles will take second or two to load. It doesn't happen a lot, but I have noticed it.

My bigger issue, that I'm hoping to be fixed with the update, is that text messages will sometimes stop working, and I will get unable to send responses until I reboot the phone.

Is there any kind of list available of Apps that support Live Tile? The percentage of Apps using Live Tile would be interesting, imo. Is it that hard to implement? It seems like Apps with live tile have a higher chance to be mentioned somewhere just because they have it...

Live Tiles aren't really hard to implement, but they require a server infrastructure (or integration into an existing infrastructure). A lot of developers probably don't want to invest the money it'd require.
