New hardware could be any time. I bet it will have more to do with Microsoft doing more coding for other hardware. No sense in releasing anymore phones based on on the QSD8250 chipset.

If I was to bet, I would say spring.

Thought you might be joking, but if you've never used an iPhone or BB I suppose you haven't had visual voicemail before. Basically your voicemail is in a menu, and you get playback controls because it's really just a media file. You don't have to call in and wait for the computer voice to tell you the number and time the call was made.

You can view your voicemail and choose which one to listen to.

When do you guys think we'll see another generation of hardware, around summer?

seriously, WP7 definitely looks cool, but I don't understand why someone would chose it now over iPhone or Android, or even Palm.

edit: though I guess if you are really into Zune Pass, it'd probably be worth it.

as an iphone and mac user who very grudgingly uses his xbox 360 for the sole reason that it has fantastic games, i'd say that windows phone 7 or whatever it's called is a lot more appealing to me than android. i really like the interface design, and even if it's not 100% finished i like that they're at least attempting to replicate the slick, unified experience of the iphone. i hope enough people give it a go so that it can evolve and provide relevant competition.

eurghh can't decide between WP7 and Android x_x

Zune is so damn sexy

what would you guys say is your favourite thing about WP7?

I'd still be able to access gmail accounts on a WP7 device right?

For me I have yet to have a smart phone.. I have had my ipod touch for a while and I am bored of the OS on it. I am looking forward to Zune pass.. I love the style of this OS and the Live connection is great.. So I am very excited for this personally.

Of course. I'm on an Android right now (HTC Hero), but I can't wait to get my hands on a WP7.

As an iPhone 3G user wanting to move to the WP7, does anyone know anything about the lack of visual voicemail? I'm curious if that's because of the carriers, or if Microsoft just doesn't have it built into the current version. Visual voicemail is one of those things I'm just so used to having on the iPhone so I'm hesitant to upgrade to WP7 unless it's going to get that feature at some point.

I'm also surprised that I've seen almost nothing about the lack of visual voicemail in any of the reviews. What, am I the only person in the world that hates calling into your voicemail?

There are many little tidbits which I think many have gotten used to which are not in this initial version of WP7. It's amazing that the iPhone (natively), Android (Google Voice) and even BB have visual voicemail. I too HATE calling my voicemail. My Android phone lets me do it visually and even transcribes my voicemail into a text if I choose too.

I really like what we are seeing as a base platform with WP7, but if you chose to be an early adopter of the software, you are going to have to live with some of these issues until they get addressed. I don't know if/when we will see Google branch out to make some WP7 software, but if they do, Google voice would solve at the visual voicemail issue.

The most appealing thing about WP7 is that it is the unifying device in Microsoft's ecosystem. Ecosystem is really important, and its something Android has nailed down with the integration of Google's online services into the OS. Since Apple isn't in the online service space (MobileMe is a big meh, especially since you have to pay for it), you don't get that same integration with the iPhone.

Not joking. I have a Blackberry at the moment but I just don't get [or send] voicemail; people send a text or an email instead.

Sounds useful though, I guess. If you're still getting voicemail.

favorite thing would probably be the restrictions set on the OEMs, they can't fuck up the OS. And for awhile there the way the updates would come from Microsoft and not have anything to do with Wireless Carriers or OEMs was nice too. (now it turns out someone like AT&T can hold up a update if it doesn't past their "Tests".) http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=23959485&postcount=43

and yes you can still access gmail.

I'd agree about the unification stuff but wp7 integrates far more "stuff" than android (or even apple) because they have more to integrate..... zune/zunepass, xbox, office, sharepoint, exchange, hotmail, live.com (auto picture uploading/recovery services).

You do all that with a genuinely new interface and you have the potential for a winner.

If you're on an iPhone 3G I don't know how you can wait. I'm at a point where I don't even use most of my apps because of how slow the phone is. It's so frustrating. I tried an iPhone 4 at a store and WP7 at PAX two months ago. Both are so much better. iPhone 3G is from so long ago :( I still remember picking it over an N95 because the N95 was too expensive. Seems like so long ago...

Same. VoiceMail is there strictly for when I'm applying to jobs and such. Aside from my uncles or parents who don't text, I don't ever need to access it. Everyone I know hangs up as soon as they hit voicemail and sends a text or calls later.

Much like people revolve their online services around Google, I'm about 75% invested in Live. Mail, Calendar, Messenger, Xbox, Mesh... The only services I don't use Microsoft's offerings for are Google Docs, Google Maps, Google Search, and Mozilla Firefox. Having a phone that syncs with all that is useful to me.

The idea of integrating applications into hubs based on task is also very appealing. I absolutely hate the wall of icons design that iOS and Android use. Every single application is launched as a separate entity and that's now how I feel a mobile OS should work.

That and I'm bored of my iPhone after 2 years and want a change :)

All the issues you describe are software and simple to update. None are hardware probes and calling wp7 hardware mediocre in relation to an iPhone 3G is um, funny.

I'm not calling the WP7 hardware mediocre compared to an iPhone 3G. I'm calling it mediocre compared to what the competition is offering at the same price. Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% in for WP7. The apps that I consider essential just aren't where they need to be.

That didn't actually happen.

Seemed pretty straightforward to me. If you're looking to upgrade, you just want to get the best you can, especially if you're going to hold on to it for two more years. New hardware/2 yo hardware isn't a question.

I get it.

was the way it was worded.

Is there any forum or information blogsite on hacking the WP7 OS?

I'm really interested in the amazing-looking Dell Venue Pro, and if WP7 is a letdown (Which looks unlikely except for the HUGE oversight that Microsoft doesnt allow sideloading apps) then I would feel safe knowing Security has been breached so I can load Android on it.

Uno looks yummy and will be mine. Can games be online? There's a scrabble game that looks really nicely done and it says multiplayer?

I figured I was just gonna watch the uploaded version tomorrow.

I actually don't mind the software mishaps as they can be updated. I'm just not sold on any of the phone on my carrier AT&T. I like some of the EU phones better, and US wise I'd rather have the HD7. I'm on a family plan on AT&T though so I can't really switch.

I'm a .NET developer and I use OneNote on my existing WinMo phone extensively - it syncs with OneNote on my laptop. Also, our company uses Exchange & SharePoint and my personal email is hotmail - I'm figuring this OS will support those the best.

Android supports Exchange with some limitations. For example, if you reply to an email, it doesn't add "You replied to this message on 10/23 7:10pm" when I pull up that email on my laptop.

I hate iTunes and Palm is on the way out.

If there's no reason for you to switch to WP7 and you want to wait and see how it develops, by God, don't buy a WP7! Don't jump on it because of the 'hype'. It's not a mature platform, not the best mobile OS out there, but it's an option, right?

Look, right now I'm using an HTC Touch Diamond and I'm sick of the phone and Windows Mobile. It's nice for things like Exchange, but that's it. So what are my options? Android? I don't think so. I, for one, see Android as a modern Windows Mobile and I don't need that anymore. Since I was never a fan of the iPhone interface and iTunes, that isn't an option either. WP7 on the other hand has a nice and sleek interface that is based on the Zune HD (which I love) and that's a huuuge plus for me, so I'm going to get a WP7. As for the 'mediocre hardware' I'm just glad that I don't have that problem. First I was planing to wait for the first big WP7 update in spring, because I thought the Dell Lightning would come out in the same time frame. Turns out it comes sooner than expected and now I'm getting it this year (probably for Christmas).

HTC will release the HTC 7 Pro in Q1 2011 and I doubt the other manufacturers will just sit there and do nothing. If you don't like those phones either, who knows? Maybe someone will make an Android phone that's going to blow you away. Good thing is, you have the choice.

I think you guys misunderstand me. I'm not trash talking WP7 or putting it down in any way. I've been out of contract on my iPhone 3G for like 6 months, waiting for WP7. I am going to get one. I'm just questioning whether the apps I use are at a point where it makes sense for me to do it right now. Newer hardware isn't my primary concern, it was just another potential plus for holding off.

I just can't decide between the HD7 and the Focus...

Well, from the reviews, the Focus has a way better screen than the HD7. So it's either you care about a slightly larger screen with worse image quality, or a slightly smaller screen and superior image quality.

Even though there was a lot of hype for the HD7, the reviews made it sound meh compared to the Focus (camera, screen, etc), and the only thing that seems better is the build materials (Samsung is using plastic, which gives it a perceived lesser build quality value).

Can't speak from experience until a few more weeks have passed of course!

Orange have actually dispatched the Omnia 7 and will text me tomorrow to let me know what time I need to make a mad dash home from work...

Much more impressed with Orange than I have been with T-Mobile, I have to say.

i have a 3GS and am seriously considering the WP7......iOS is very slick but i have some serious issues with it, notifications are terrible, home screen is useless and why do i have to wait 10 seconds just to see the weather? I really like the approach Microsoft has taken with WP7, its different from everything else out there and i am very interested.

There is also WPcentral.com which is a partner website to crackberry.

Does the Zune app work if I'm using it in Virtual machine on the Mac? Will Wifi sync work as well?

No problem - will try and get them up by the evening.

One thing that's annoying me in the Application Marketplace is the screenshots. For the majority of programs it's okay, but it always displays the images in the tall aspect ratio even if you're looking at a game that plays in the wide aspect ratio.
