More like the market hasn't taken them seriously
The reason the market hasn't taken them seriously is because they all have iPhones and iPods which require iTunes. I wasn't willing to use two clients even though I friggin' hated iTunes. I actually did try to use Zune 4.7 but it BSOD'd me both times I installed it and stopped trying.

They need to get Zune software stable and on both major OSes if they want to get a hold on the market using Windows Phone 7.

windows makes up like what? 95% of the market? They don't need to support mac, the only reason they do is because it seems like most of the tech journalist use them and will complain.
Microsoft really isn't in a position in this space to be able to shrug off journalists' complaints.

Totally different teams. You have to remember MS has done a shit ton of restructuring teams and commingling of teams unlike before. There old mobile team was doing win mo for Christ sakes.

Yep, there is no free trial for the app. Honestly, if you app cost more that $5 it should have free trial.

Is it still true if the game is an XBLA game and not just a regular game it HAS to have a trial like on the 360?

Couple of questions for the focus/at&t owners.

I am new to at&t so I was wondering if any current at&t owners spring for the $5 phone insurance. Over the course of the contract it will cost $120 and I am debating whether or not its worth it. Will it really cover virtually anything and is at&t good about giving you replacement phones? Wondering about peoples real world experiences with it.

To those with the focus has anybody else had a hard time taking good pictures with the device? Mine seems to be very picky about movement when I press the camera button (even that slight movement on the phone will make the image blur badly). It seems to happen more often with images where I am capturing a large area (where maybe the autofocus is having trouble determining what to capture). Any settings I should be looking at that might help? I did set the antishaking to on.

Another little thing I noticed but when the camera video is displayed on the screen/viewfinder it looks great. However as soon as I snap the image it does not look anywhere near as good even on those images that come out good. Does that happen to anybody else? (Since its putting a good image on the screen I assume the camera is capable of taking a good picture but I can't seem to make it work very well)

well i guess this is a good a place as any to ask. I want to buy a new phone that does 2 things

1. allows me to check my emails, and notfieis me whenever i get a new one
2. allows me to view, edit and save excel/word files

i'd assume a windows phone is best suited to this purpose, but the blackberry and android phones look really good too. any reccomendations for phones that meet the above criteria?

All phones do #1

As for #2 WP7 does this well though don't expect ball'n editing tools on the go. You can create simple excel files and look at things and stuff though.

Most phones nowadays should do both actually to some extent.

However, WP7 is going to excel at #2 (no pun intended). You can't do the same amount of editing as you can on the desktop clients obviously, but I doubt anyone would want to do intense editing off a document on a phone.

Double-check your camera settings. IIRC, WP7 doesn't save the camera settings (which is pretty dumb, and hopefully gets patched), so you'd have to turn on the anti-shaking each time you go into the camera. Other than that, not sure.

I snap this with the phone. The image is good but not great in my experience and lack of camera setting really blow. Picture in the dark is terrible without flash (but then everything is wash out from flash).

Wrong thread.

Unless you figured out how to install WP7 OS on iPhone 4G

In which case, do tell us

I know it doesn't save them (and it is dumb) but I did make a point to set the auto shake thing.... but it still seems to take wildly blurry images if there is even the slightest motion (pressing down the button) and maybe even a slight delay in taking the picture where movement from the button press is exaggerated. Just trying to guage others real world impressions because most reviews praised the camera on the focus.

http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-focus-camera-shots/#3500349

The best I have been able to get mine to take a picture is about equivalent to their worst (the fallout 3 picture). All of the pictures I have taken seem to have that slight blurriness to them and some of mine are unviewable because of the blur and I am not shaking the camera like crazy when taking these pictures.... just slight motion due to the button press. My old phone (palm pre) didn't have this problem so its a bit odd to have it now. That said if you get it just right the focus can take a really good image but out of the 100 or so pictures I have taken so far only 2 or 3 of them have been that good which is nowhere near good enough for me. It really needs to take a good picture 90% of the time IMO.

Bit of a general contacts question for Live and WP7.

Does anyone know how to configure contacts so there is a separate listing for mobiles and texts? Or does everyone just use a different designation for the mobile?

I'd prefer if this could be done via Live as that would keep things in one place.

Sigh! WP7 is really good at times and sometimes it looks really rushed.

1) No copy and paste :(

2) No support for hidden SSID for WIFI (this should be a standard!), no vpn

3) No internet tethering

4) Bling Maps is terrible, unless someone can teach me how to set a destination and get from your current destination to your destination.

5) No MS point support for XBLA games

Other than that, email client is top notch, the excel has sort and formulas which i use on a daily basis. The Zune music player is as good as a iphone one (at least a much better standard of the crappy pre-installed andriod ones). The windows phone stuff on to control the phone remotely is pretty good and is a good alternative to Mobile Me. And yes achievements to hear that popping sound when doing something in game is awesome :D

Oh Omnia 7 FTW

Not really sure what you're trying to do. Why would you want a separate listing for mobiles and texts?

so I put my hd7's camera through its paces during the LA auto show yesterday. first off, it killed my battery only after a few hours of use. I later found out I had geotagging and auto upload to SkyDrive on. the pics came out as expected. one of the halls that didn't have good lighting produced awful pics, everything else though looked great. I did also discover a flaw in the video recording. during videos that required the lens to autofocus the lens would do this weird jump that affected the video. as if the lens would do a partial zoom during the focus correction. the issue was not present during bids that did not require re-focusing. anyone else experience this?

Most of my friends use some sort of texting service so it doesn't actually count towards texts. It's a totally different number.

I honestly don't know the details because I get 1500 a month.

I'd just put them in as 2 mobile numbers.. when you start a text, just go to messaging and start typing in your contact name.. then choose the appropriate number when you see it pop up in the list.

my roommate has 2 phone numbers.. so I just start typing his name and pick the number I want.. it's pretty straightforward.

not really. they support mac because they want to avoid another anti-trust lawsuit

I'm just curious as to how AmazonWireless works. I bought a Focus which hasn't shipped yet (because of the backlog) but my credit was approved. If I call and cancel the order of the phone am I going to be under contract with AT&T? No information about my service, phone #, or SIM card has been given to me yet.

Oh okay. I kinda wish they let you have more control over the different numbers you add to a user. I know iPhone has supported custom labels forever, so I could add a google voice number or whatever to different people.

One thing that's been bothering me in daily use is the lack of a delete button and/or cursor buttons.

When you make a mistake typing out a word, you're basically fucked. Delete the word and start over.

I'd have to double check, but annoyingly I think it only supports one mobile number - meaning only one number you can ever text to.

2) Why do you hide your SSID? It's a known non-helper for security, and all it does is hurt your battery life as it struggles more to make a connection.

4) What exactly are you having trouble with? Bing Maps on Windows Phone 7 is better than Google Maps on the iPhone IMO, and that's after using an iPhone for more than 2 years. There are three buttons at the bottom. 1) new directions, 2) find yourself, 3) seaarch for something.

Whenever you hit the "Directions" button, it immediately puts "My location" as the starting location.

Or if you search for a place, the first link shown to you is a big, bold directions and "from my location" right below it. Just tap that.

No. You get an email once it ships with instructions on how to active your phone.

If you return the phone without activation, there's nothing to worry about.

Hmmm good to see it's not just me...

I've taken some great pics with my camera at times, but I also noticed it was easy as fuck to get blurry pics. Plus it wasn't pics taken outdoors the quality seemed to noise dive especially at night.

What bugs me though is I HAVE gotten some good pics with the camera. So it IS capable. It's just wildly all over the place.

This isn't even going on the mini rant about your settings not saving either.

So it more than likely is a software issue seeing as you are noticing the same thing.... What it feels like to me is the auto stabilization needs to be vastly improved when you click the camera button.

BTW I was able to improve my low light image captures by disabling the flash and forcing it to stay off (but that also limits the use in a low light image). It almost feels like the issue is with the camera's flash (on or off) and the camera trying to determine the focus level. I am going to experiment more with leaving the flash off all the time and see if that fixes the blurry images (until a software update hopefully)

One other thing I noticed is the video capture is perfect.... sure its needs auto stabilization added as well but it does not have the "quality" issues the photo capture does.

I'm actually in the same boat.

I ordered from Amazon, but convinced my local AT&T store to give me the same price (and allow me to keep my plan). Phone had already shipped though - which is weird, the initial email said Dec 1 was the expected date.

Apparently you aren't using the same phone as me, have you tried a long press on text? It brings up a cursor from there you can edit. Although I've had luck just clicking a word and selecting a fix out of the suggestions.

I also have multiple numbers per contact.

What are you smoking?

You can get an edit cursor.. press and hold on the text and you'll get a text cursor that moves with your finger.. just let go when it's where you want it.

I got 2 mobile numbers by having one on each contact for my roommate.. I have one phone number from his facebook information and another from my google contact info.. you're right about not supporting multiple mobile numbers on the device.. but you could create separate contacts and link them together to get around that.

You could have one that was like Your Friend (text) and Your Friend (phone) and link them into a single contact.
