I'm putting down some troll-suspicion on this line of dialogue.

Someone who sold a brand new phone 4 weeks in because of a browser is either a moron or a liar. I'm going to lean towards liar. Pics or it didn't happen.

Elsewise: don't feed the troll?

Charred buys and returns stuff all the time. The latest is probably gonna be a nook Color, but I also think he did the same with either the iPhone 4 or iPod Touch.

He posted 1 page back about his frustrations with the browser. I like sending pages to Instapaper too.

I don't think he is trolling, the phone is nice but it still have a lot of shortcoming including the browser. He has it for a month so it is the time to return it and still get refund.

I never said that and I wouldn't do that.

Microsoft is totally serious about Windows Phone 7, yo.

"I think there are too many people with too much money invested to let Apple win in terms of flooding the entire market," Connell told the audience, according to GI.biz.

"You'd better believe Microsoft is very serious about Windows Phone 7, and protecting their part of the business. It's going to be an interesting time - that's for sure."
MS 'taking the fight to Apple' with Windows Phone 7

A new version of GoVoice is out. The Google Voice application for Windows Phone 7 now supports live tiles and better push-notifications.
The big change is the use of GVMax, a donation-supported service that will handle the "pushing" of Google SMS and voicemail notifications to your phone (here's an overview of the service by LifeHacker). In conjunction with the live tile counter, GoVoice is the most full featured Google Voice app currently on the market (though we imagine the similarly named GVoice is going to try and play catch up real soon). You'll have to take a few minutes to set up GVMax, but it's quite painless from our experience.

The program is currently $2.99, though the developer, Nick Yu, is aiming to make it free while the push-service will cost $1.99 a year.
Zune Marketplace: GoVoice
WPCentral: GoVoice 2.0 hits bringing better push-notifications, live tile support

I was concerned about the browser even before I bought the phone and have already expounded on my complaints in detail:

I've complained about IE before but now I'm going to let it all out now. First you have to realize that 95% of my web browsing (i.e. not using apps for web services like twitter or netflix) on mobile phones consists of sneaking a few minutes here and there for GAF, Hacker News, Reddit, Guardian/Football and then sending interesting links and articles to Instapaper for later perusal. IE fails on each one of those functions. It doesn't display Mobile GAF properly (some trouble with the gradients) and there are little glitches like the page selector button not working. IE doesn't display iCombinator properly either; the 'save to instapaper' button is no where to be seen' and the comments pages are a clusterfuck. Reddit is halfway usable but suffers from the *different font sizes on same page* problem that I've seen a few times. Guardian/Football always defaults to the mobile version of a page, even after I set the cookie with the full desktop mode option. To top if off, bookmarklets can't be easily saved (they don't even work, mind you) so I can't set up my Instapaper bookmarklet nor can I copy and paste links directly to the Instapaper website. IE is thus practically useless to me.

Yeah, I do like gadgets :D and AT&T only started to get the good stuff (besides the iPhone) in the past few months. So it's not WP7 it's me, honest. I only like the beginnings of things... :|

MS has more than Apple to worry about though. If anything I'd be more worried about Google as they seem even to be exhibiting more aggressive tendencies.

The guy works for Microsoft Game Studios. It's not surprising that he picks on Apple.

I like WP7 and I like the Focus. I want to try something new and the browser was my 'excuse' to do so. I can't justify my gadget lust at the best of times but you're certainly not helping :lol

btw, they explained the lack of podcast support outside the US in an episode of the Zune Insider, but I can't remember which episode it was. I'll try to find it.

Found it.

Why is the podcast marketplace US only? (14:01 - 17:57)

And ugh, it's so stupid and so very Microsoft-like. How is it not possible to solve problems like that before you go international? It's not like they had 3 years ...

Sounds like you just wanted to try it for 30 days.

I couldn't do it, but I guess I have no problem with others exploiting return policies.

To be fair, browsing is the killer app for many people. It's the one part of a smartphone where you shouldn't have to accept any compromises.

I bought the Samsung Focus on ebay and sold it on craigslist. I'm actually taking a 20% loss. The only gadget I bought this year which I'm returning is the NookColor and that's because the B&N staff highlighted the return policy themselves and encouraged me to try it out.

Well, the iPhone doesn't have the best browsing experience and it's currently the "go to" smartphone.

Yeah, mobile browsing is chock full of compromises.

I still don't have a smartphone because I think the performance is too shitty and the data costs are too high.

Yup, I agree. I think it comes down to which browser fits your workflow the best. I use Instapaper a lot so I totally get why Mobile IE not supporting bookmarklets is a dealbreaker for Charred.

More importantly the iPhone is the "go to" smartphone for web site designers so almost every mobile site is developed in reference to mobile Safari. I doubt many bother to test their sites on other platforms :/

I'm glad the whole browser situation doesn't affect me that much.

I still don't get why people would wanna use desktop versions of websites on a phone. The content with all the JS and flash wasn't made for that format. The screen is too small and the resolution is still too low. You're constantly zooming in and out, arranging the text and so on. It's like reading your full sized newspaper in paperback format. I think it's annoying and that's why I use the mobile versions of websites. You get the same articles with pictures and videos in a format that was made for those screens, with less data usage and faster load times.

Now if you have a mobile browser like the mobile IEwhatever for WP7, that still can't render simple things like a mobile site properly (NeoGAF, Neowin?, TechCrunch), well ... that's just bad. And I won't stop complaining about that, until they got it right.

If they had a good browser with HTML5 support, you'd get this

instead of this

I know that there is a YT video player in the marketplace, but you still have to use the shitty version of YT mobile and it doesn't solve the problem with other video portals or embedded videos. Why use an app for that, if you can use the web for that?

Mr. Snrub said:
Have there been any updates on MS's Flash/HTML5 support? They said it was coming, right?

As far as I know, they're still working on Flash (the hardware itself does in fact support flash hardware acceleration). Don't think I've heard them even hint that HTML5 was coming to the browser anytime soon. I know MS recently put up a job listing for a major overhal of the Windows Phone browser which is going to focus on standards compliance, but not sure if that will be for WP8, or an upgrade to the WP7 browser.

And that job listing is all we have atm.

There's finally a new WP7 ad and it shows XBL.
  • It shows a real feature; displaying your 3D avatar in the X-Box Live Extras app.
  • It shows a real WP7 game, Need for Speed : undercover.
  • It includes some humour thanks to a life-size avatar doing his “sexy dance”.
  • It moves away from the ‘glance n’ go’ style they had been working with, which might give the wrong impression about WP7 & shows that its actually a fun platform.
  • Then there is the line ”You’re an avatar dan.” Which I think Ill be quoting to many of my friends who haven’t a clue what I’m on about.

Sucks that my Ebay seller backed out on the transaction, so I'm back to square one in terms of acquiring a phone. Meh, might look into a Focus instead of the Quantum, though not if the price is too much higher.

Yeah, I think it's android that will be the one to beat. Both Microsoft and Apple need to heed what Google is doing.

edit: just want to add that not supporting at least HTML5 is pretty idiotic .. but then again this is Microsoft.

I don't understand why not? That is why there is the return policy, so if you don't like it you can return it. My wife, until she met me and even then for a longest time would never ever return thing that she bought. I was always the one returning stuff.

It's also wonderful when they put things on sale ... I got $150.00 back for my Focus.

I was playing around with a Win7 phone the other day at Future Shop. Interesting device and the side swipe to get to more screens wasn't as awkward as I thought.

I do have a question though. The commercials claim that the phone gets you "in and out so you can get back to life". I don't really see how this is accomplished. I mean the tiles are there with how many e-mails, texts, etc. But you still have to drill down to see them, correct?

The "Really?" campaign was pretty ill-thought out. The live tiles are GREAT--my GoVoice shows how many Google Voice messages/texts I have, my Weatherbug displays the weather, AP Mobile shows a beautiful picture that makes you want to read the new story, the individual contact tiles show their Facebook status, and the Calendar tile shows my next appointment.

But it's also a beautiful UI that you WANT to spend time playing with.

Okay you can throw me into the camp of wanting context sensitive volume controls on the side. I hate that the volume control on the side is fuck'n an all volume button. Like I want the ringer loud for my alarm and my phone, but I want to turn the music volume down. It fucks me on this.

I HATE this. What an oversight.

For what you are saying yes its not much faster (yet)...... I would say there is nothing to prevent them from adding information here as they update things (scrolling text might be a good idea). We have only scratched the surface of what the live tiles will become....

The faster stuff (imo) is coming from the concept of the hubs where the idea is to integrate multiple services into one consistent UI (the people hubs and picture hubs are good examples of this). With most other phones you have separate apps for everything where all you do is drill in and out of apps (there really is not good reason why you should have 4 or 5 separate picture apps when they could just be in one like they are with wp7)

Personally I think they need to go further with the hubs and I think they will over time.... I would love a news hub (integrating the national ap stories with my local news and paper), a sports hub, a local hub, etc. Netflix should even be in the video hub and not a separate app as it is now. The only "apps" that really need to exist as a stand alone app imo are games (and there is even a hub for those on wp7).

I actually wish they did the zunehd style of volume controls..... but I know some people didn't like it.

I haven't been keeping up with the thread, but what phone are you looking for, specifically?

Edit: Yeah, previous page, I'm an idiot. I was going to offer to get you an LG Quantum from Canada, but for $300, yeah, no. :lol

I can't agree more on this, and it should be fix. I miss many phone call because last thing I did was listening to stuff on earphone and have volume way down. They should just have volume for ringer and volume for audio.

I hated when seller do that, probably got some guy email him saying they willing to give him more.

Good luck, I try to find cheap Quantum for my wife for X-mas (keyboard is must have for most girl it seems, all my female co-worker cite this as their number one reason for choosing new phone). Best I can see on eBay is around 350-375.

Indeed, we're at the point where the web is stating to become compliant due to the increased number of browsers and users moving away from IE6-IE8.

We have what I call mobile compliance on mobile sites, and even then MS does their own thing. Unfortunately it's not 1991 and MS no longer sets trends.

If you are patient, and willing to get a used phone, you can get them for ~$300. I just snapped up a like new focus for $385 shipped. Hopefully this seller doesn't screw me over.

Perhaps; I just can't see what the issues are. I mean my biggest complain with browsing the web is that the NeoGAF SecondApps page is skinned to look like the bloody iPhone. Everything else is smooth, quick loading and accurately reproduced.

I don't have any problems with returns.

However, I think there is a difference between buying something and subsequently discovering it wasn't as expected and buying something with zero intention of keeping it.

The point's moot, though. As that's not what happened.

I assume at some point IE will be reworked yo use IE 9 underpinnings. The real questions is when?

It will be interesting to see if they will first move up from IE7 rendering to IE8 rendering code first, or just skip it and go straight to IE9 rendering code (that would be most ideal!). Considering IE9 isn't even finished until sometime next year, it could possibly come in a 2012 major update (maybe late 2011 if they worked their asses off).
