Wow, the new Bing upgrades (especially Scout) look really cool. Glad they're integrating this type of "discovery" into the OS. Bing Vision seems badass.

I'm not sure what you mean, because I'm using the Nagivon software and it is just like on the other devices. I'm not sure where you live, but since I have the function I doubt it's just not available due to hardware/software limitations. :/
Navigon is only on certain carrier subsidized phones. You can't buy it anywhere.

Scout will probably be another feature that works only in the US.

The only thing holding me back from whooping uncontrollably is the lack of confirmation of turn by turn navigation with voice navigation.

Anyone heard anything?
Turn by turn navigation has full voice navigation including auto corrections when you go off route.

I'm in the UK and I'm thinking proper turn by turn navigation like Tom Tom or Android Directions as was rumoured here: http://www.winrumors.com/new-windows-phone-7-5-features-revealed/

I've downloaded A to B and Drive On which do a rudimentary job but for any serious family days out we still go back to using my wifes Desire.

Navigon over here is free if you use a T-Mobile sim card, but my phone is from O2. It's not like the software is only available for those who bought phones with a T-Mobile contract over here. Everyone can download the software, but I think you cannot use it if you don't use T-Mobile's sim cards. :)

So if you use a T-Mobile SIM card in a Windows Phone, it will show up on the marketplace?

I'm not 100% sure since I've used a T-Mobile card when I downloaded it. I don't anymore and it's still showing up. However, the description says it's exclusive to T-Mobile users. I'll try downloading it as soon as I can put another sim card in. :)

edit: Just watched the Demo video on YouTube. I still don't understand why Microsoft just ignores that there's a market outside of the US. I really hope that changes once they get Nokia phones because I'm not willing to be treated like a second class customer much longer. I know everything takes time, but they should at least try to improve things for customers outside of the US. No Podcasts is still a big thing for me even though I can download them now (thanks to the fix provided by brotkasten).

Time to be excited about Europe, Microsoft.

If anyone hasn't watched Joe's vid yet, I highly recommend it. It's a world of difference between reading about the features and seeing them in action.

  • Bing Scout: Pressing this from search screen uses your location and organizes info into different pivot screens:
    • Eat + Drink: Restaurants nearby w/reviews, pricing, and location shown
    • See + Do: Events/landmarks nearby
    • Shop: Nearby stores
    • Favorites: Lists any favorites you made from the prior screens
    • Highlights: "Must see" places
  • Bing Vision: Dynamic image search! Opens this and it scans a book cover in front of him, then automatically brings up a list of results based on the book cover. Results list reviews and prices from different sources, in addition to an "apps" pivot, which will link directly into relevant apps for the scanned item (in this example, it was a book, so Amazon, Best Buy, and Kindle apps showed)
  • Briefly shows new Xbox hub, but mainly uses it to show the great new multitasking
  • Best Buy app: Uses this to show off new live tiles. Shows a TV that he's interested in buying, but it's out of stock. He pins the specific model of TV to his Start screen, which updates based on his location--for him, it says "3 miles away" indicating it's in stock at a nearby store
  • Mail conversations: shows how you can manage mail conversations easily by tapping the left margin of the Inbox to check/uncheck conversations
  • Linked email accounts: Basically a "group" tile for email, so you can have multiple personal accounts linked together in one Ibox
  • Contact groups: This one is pretty cool, shows a "Friends" group. The live tile automatically cycles through the contact pictures within. Once you go in, it lists all the contacts there with their live tile and lets you know if there is new email from them. This also has it's own "What's New" and "Pictures" pivots, just for that group
  • Threaded messaging: Can message via Messenger, text, Xbox live, Facebook. Based on the friend's status in each account, it will suggest to you how to contact them, so if you texted them in the morning, you can continue the same conversation through Facebook, then through Xbox Live, etc.

Time to be excited about Europe, Microsoft.
It's not like they're ignoring Europe on purpose. It's already a pain in the ass to map everything in a country that is as big as the US. Trying to do the same in Europe is probably a lot more difficult, due to different laws. I'm sure you remember the drama about Google StreetView in Germany. Google gave up for now, where Microsoft just started with Bing StreetSlide. Kinda funny.

Same goes for music. It's not easy to get deals with record labels done. Just look at YouTube and you can see how bitchy the labels can be.

Fact is, Microsoft came last, the competition has a big head start and Microsoft doesn't have unlimited resources.

I assume European users also won't be able to download podcasts from our phones considering we're not even supposed to be able to do it from Zune.

We won't even be able to bypass it this time.

I agree, but you also have to take a look at the features that don't require an absurd amount of work to be implemented. It took Google many years to get to where they are now (Maps, etc.) and I don't expect Microsoft to work faster than Google, I really don't. I do, however, expect them to come out and tell me that they actually are working on it. What's their reason for Podcasts not being up here yet? What's their reason for YouTube not working if you don't change your phone so Youtube thinks you're in the US? We don't see any improvements anywhere and that worries me. Microsoft saying that the Podcast feature in Mango will only be available in the US shows me that they don't even think they'll have them this year. It's unsettling.

Man I am loving what they are adding. The groups is brilliant.. I will use that daily. Good stuff all around now hurry up and put this in my phone!

Belfiore already said at mix that podcast downloads on the phone are a US feature. But there will be a workaround, I'm sure about it. I obviously can confirm it yet, but I'll try it as soon as the unlocked emulator image is available.

Wait, didn't someone from Microsoft announce that WiFi hotspot was in?

e: They announced it at TechEd last week.

Can you provide a link to that. Pretty sure it was only rumored at best

I was wrong, everyone panic now!

The rumor came out a day before the TechEd keynote. It was leaked by the guys from the Windows Phone Dev Podcast and they were pretty accurate before. Pretty much everything they leaked was shown today.

e: btw, I'm disappointed that really nobody at the events in the US or UK asked about the podcast situation.

Eh, I stopped caring about tethering when every carrier decided it would be a good idea to charge an extra monthly fee to support it.

Yeah. It sucks but aren't all carriers moving away from tethering support soon?

Not in Canada! I had to tether for the second half of April and first month of May... very useful in emergency situations.

i really hope the nokia phones look like this

that white one looks damn awesome.

Love to know how much of the Bing stuff is US only...... :(
Part of the reason for their Nokia deal was because Nokia has a ton of similar services outside of the US. I suspect the data is all being integrated together.

My mango theme! I can't wait!

So instead of new thread, I like the idea of keeping Mango in the OP since it's already look fantastic. How about if Brotkasten can get one of the mod to add to thread title like "now with Mango!"
