IM+ is finally available on the marketplace.
For $9.99/€8.99.
Without a trial mode or an ad supported version.
And no Windows Live Messenger support.
$9.99/€8.99.

What the fuck.

too expensive
on other platforms this kind of type of apps are free
It's free with ads or $4.99 for the ad-free version on iOS. They can't or shouldn't charge a premium, just because they're the first multi protocol messenger on Windows Phone. This is ridiculous.

Why? Has any reason been given? That's like releasing a £140 videogame.

Whatsapp IM is 59p and was free for weeks. Nuff said.

A bit shameless. There should really be an ad supported free version at least. I hope the backlash is big so they are forced to do something.

No, not really.
But no Trial is really a bummer.
Yeah, no trial is the real issue here. There are $10 instant messaging apps on iOS (IM+ Pro costs $10 right now) and some even used to cost more.

I kind of feel this is how it always is with WP7 apps... we just have less to chose fromand they always cost more...

i have not tried it myself, but doesnt the meebo mobile site work, for limited multi client chatting?
Not with the current browser. You should try it, though. The results were pretty funny, iirc. This should change with IE9.

e: works fine in the emulator.

The real problem is that the standard IM+ app is free on iOS. The Pro app might be just as expensive, but the standard IM+ app offers all the functionality you need, for free. On WP you get a gimped version for the same price as IM+ Pro.

so when are the nokia mango phones coming out? if it's within the year, i could wait instead of buying an android right now. is it possible to root/jailbreak/whatever?

Back then the IM+ Pro iOS version was gimped as well. iOS had no multitasking when the instant messaging apps launched on the platform and many of the apps didn't support all the protocols. The first one I bought was Beejive and it cost $16 and didn't support facebook chat. Even now, Beejive costs $10 and it doesn't come in a universal version so the iPhone and iPad apps cost $20 in total. Apart from the xbox live games, which I rarely buy, I haven't found the apps on WP7 marketplace to be as expensive as their counterparts on other platforms.

Honestly, after doing some research, I'm all for higher base game prices ($4, like we have now). Hopefully it will encourage developers to create quality games.

Speaking of games, what's Square-Enix stance on Windows Phone?
Windows Phone doesn't even support Japanese in any way right now and I haven't heard much of Japanese carriers being excited about WP Mango. The Fujitsu Windows Phones might change that, but I doubt there will be a big impact.

I thought I read something about Nokia showing off their WP prototype today. Was that just a far flung rumor or is it really supposed to happen?

We need it to be a big impact, otherwise we won't be getting Chaos Ring or any cool Japanese RPGs.

May Mango help us.

I think the rumor was they would be showing a new device on the 21st, don't know how that works out with time zones.

It was never confirmed to be a WP7 device from what I've read. It is far more likely to be a Meego device, IMO.

It's just the N9, nothing to see here.

Like I said, it's way too early to announce the Windows Phone, especially after the "we're going Apple-secrecy style" comments or something like that.

Just got my HTC Trophy. I really like it, but were do i go on the phone to download new wallpapers and ringtones? I can only find games and upgrades for my camera pics.

You can't download Ringtones yet, as you can only use the one that come with the phone( although I think the next update will let you use custom ones). As for Wallpapers you can use any pictures in your pictures folder on the phone, just tap & hold on the pic & an option to set it as wallpaper should show up.

Ok so there is no wallpapers or ringtones on the marketplace yet? Hopefully they bring out some HD wallpapers. What games would you recommend?

There's not really a wallpaper store or anything, but there are several apps that have downloadable wallpapers. Just search the Marketplace for "wallpaper" or "wallpapers".

There are "Wallpaper apps" on the marketplace. But just google some pictures, it is much better and easier. Regarding games I would recommend:
Pacman CE:DX
ilomilo
Rise Of Glory
Rocket Riot
Fruit Ninja
Orb
GeoDefense

Just try them out, there are trial versions of every Live game and most non-Live games.

I've been waiting for an IM messenger since the day I got the phone. However, there's no way in hell I'd ever pay 8.99€ for it. I don't even know if it's any good, if they'll support it in the future, if everything works good enough for me to use, etc. They should at least give us a trial.

The website says it's $9.99 on the iPhone as well. The BlackBerry price is even more ridiculous: $39.95. :D

Go here and find any wallpaper you like then resize it

I watched the event (shoutout to mango at ~36:30, N9 stuff starts at ~43:20). There's some interesting stuff there. The N9 is gorgeous, I much prefer that curved look to the boxy iPhone 4 (the dude also got in a dig at the antenna haha). The phone's 960 x 540 resolution is the highest on an Nokia phone so far, and gives me hope that a WP7 manufacturer might go beyond the 800 x 480 requirement. The N9 has NFC built in and Nokia has made NFC headphones and NFC stereo speakers to work with it, pretty cool. One more interesting capability of the phone is the low powered screen mode so the the time is displayed when locked. I'd love to see any of those features in a WP7 handset.

I don't think WP7 supports any other resolution (yet).

I understood it to be that 800x480 is Microsoft's minimum and Nokia is allowed to do anything they want. I'm not holding my breath but I have some hope now. That N9 screen is certainly impressive anyway, i don't think even samsung makes amoled (or is that samoled?) phone screens with resolutions that high (yet).

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm still pretty certain that it's the required resolution, not the minimum. Like with the rest of the hardware, Microsoft is trying to keep it consistent across devices.

OMG what a sexy phone!!!

Just as we spotted earlier, the N9 is a solid slab of 3.9-inch AMOLED screen (854 x 480) sans a keyboard or physical switches of any kind (well, aside from that oh-so-necessary volume rocker and camera button). The phone comes with 16GB or 64GB of onboard memory and 1GB of RAM wrapped in a polycarbonate shell that's colored all the way through, so dings and scratches won't show -- unless the wounds run deep, of course. An OMAP3630 1 Ghz processor does the computing while a PowerVR SGX530 GPU is around for graphical grunt work. Connectivity comes courtesy of quad-band GSM and penta-band WCDMA radios, plus Bluetooth 2.1, NFC, and GPS. There is also a dedicated camera button for the 8 megapixel wide-angle shooter, which is capable of aperture F2.2 for low light picture taking and true 16:9 720p video recording. Oh, and it's an AF shooter, not EDoF.

The entire thing measures 116.45- x 61.2- x 7.6-12.1mm and weighs 135 grams, with a battery capable of lasting up to 50 hours (music), 4.5 hours (720p video), or between seven and 11 hours (GSM yappin'). You'll also get gratis turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps, a dedicated Drive app, proximity sensor and a choice of hue: black, cyan, and magenta. Other hardware specs include 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, an ambient light sensor, compass, orientation sensor, a micro SIM slot, tethering support and a 3.5mm "AV connector." It'll be humming along on MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan, with apps being compliant with Qt 4.7 and HTML5 support bundled in.

From the videos the MeeGo OS is kind of sexy too! Give me Mango on this and I'll be in heaven!!!

So this MeeGo is just another icons based UI phone?

OK Nokia, just give MS your hardware and let them do the rest.

I seems that all developers with an AppHub subscription are getting the Mango beta within the next 24 hours.

Fuck. Yes.

e: now with a source. :D

Neowin has received multiple independent tips that the beta will be made available for all devices through the MSDN Create hub for those with developer accounts, on June 22/23, with Microsoft set to make the announcement sometime during the next 24 hours. The beta will not be restricted to "favorite" developers but will be generally available to anyone with a paid subscription, and will be able to be loaded on any of the production devices.

...

Update: Neowin used multiple sources to comfirm this news. The sources used to confirm this article are reliable, and this news is not considered a rumor currently. In addition, the software giant is planning on handing out developer devices to VIP devlopers as part of the announcement.

I'm sure the guys at XDA-Developers will do everything they can to make it available to everyone. ;)

i could have sworn i saw a 960x540 but the specs are listed as 854x480 everywhere else. meh.

i'm not understanding why nokia is still releasing the N9. i thought elop said that he and an engineer went over their roadmap, releasing wp7 phones would be faster than releasing meego devices? or is choosing wp7 for nokia more about betting on the ecosystem? whatever the reason, i don't like the idea of this device seeing the light of day. i'd rather see nokia completely focus on wp7. releasing this meego device is just going to cause confusion in the market and puts doubt in my mind as to whether or not nokia truly is "all in" or not with wp7.

When Elop and Ballmer announced the partnership in February, Elop said they'd still release a MeeGo device this year. I thought it would be a tablet, since Microsoft doesn't have anything, but I guess I was wrong (as usual :P). Maybe the device was too far in development and they put too much money in it and MeeGo?

Another thing I (and everyone else for that matter - Hi Neowin and WinRumors) was wrong about, was the public Mango beta. Watson said this week is for the press only, which is bullshit, but it's not like you can do anything about it. From tha masta himself:
@BrandonWatson: 1 tweet today on this topic - @winrumors and neowin are not correct. Press reviews of consumer features are only thing happening this week.

Oh, and Microsoft should really fix the problems they have in retail. Tweets like this are horrible.
@Gartenberg: In both stores when asked about #WP7 was told "you don't want that". In one instance was "corrected" & told it was called Windows Mobile

And hey, I can make this post even longer. How about Safari in iOS5 being faster than IE9 on Microsoft's own HTML5 test site?

ios5html5.jpg

IE9 had something like 28 FPS when they tested it at MIX11. It will be interesting to see how both final versions will perform. IE9 in the emulator obviously reaches 60 fps, but that's not a fair comparison. :D

I see it as fulfilling a contractual obligation, as well as testing the waters of the market. The phone design is unique and kind of cute. I hope to see it in WP7 form one day.

those retail issues are all due to ignorance. att is the only carrier to carry multiple wp7 phones, so their reps know the product. verizon, t-mobile, and sprint all only carry one device compared to android phones which probably number in the double digits. this lack of selection and lack of multitasking ultimately puts wp7 in a bad light compared to the slew of android phones available. i really don't think we'll see a change until mango comes out.
