I hope they fix this with the rumored release between Mango and Apollo.

I would not be surprised if its fixed when mango officially releases.... We could just be using an early version in the beta. If it is a legal issue and that gets resolved I bet the fix has already been implemented in redmond already.

One author at WMPowerUser created a nice multitasking demo that compares apps that were compiled with the old SDK/7.0 target and the new SDK /7.1 target.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiTaobF-Rko

So the only thing devs have to do to enable multitasking with their apps is recompiling the existing code with the new SDK and resubmit it as an update.

Could be the reason they never demoed or mentioned the navigation in any presentation (except for the one event in Germany). The beta 2 we have is a month old (06/07/2011), so maybe they'll have the issues sorted out, but I'm not counting on it.

no, just need certification, which is free. http://source.android.com/faqs.html#compatibility
It's not entirely free. You don't pay with money, but with your balls and Google will certainly squeeze them, if you don't play by their rules.

Fundamentally, this entire case is about whether Google uses Android compatibility testing to manipulate OEMs like Motorola and Samsung. And this email from Google’s Dan Morrill seems to indicate that Google does exactly that: he says that it’s “obvious to the OEMs that we are using compatibility as a club to make them do what we want.”

From the Windows Phone Blog.

I know many of you also want to know about our global rollout plans for services like Marketplace and Xbox LIVE.

As we announced last month, starting this fall you’ll be able to buy apps from Windows Phone Marketplace in 35 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States. (The specifics of how you buy an app and which apps are available in Marketplace do vary by country.)

This fall you’ll see a significant increase in the number of new countries where the Xbox LIVE service for Windows Phone is available. The Zune Marketplace for music, video, and podcasts is also expanding to more markets. We’re not quite ready to announce specifics just yet—expect to hear more later this summer.

Finally, we get many questions about specific phone features—especially ones related to searching and mapping— and where they’ll be available. Here’s a list of ones we hear about most:

◦Bing search (accessed from the phone’s hardware Search button) is available in 33 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States. (Elsewhere, handset and mobile operators can configure the hardware search button to a locally-relevant search site).
◦Local search results show up in 6 countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, United Kingdom, and the United States.
◦Maps is supported in 19 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.
◦Voice-to-text and Voice-to-dial is available in 6 countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, and the Unites States.
◦Voice search is supported in 4 countries: France, Germany, United Kingdom, and the United States.
The future

While I hope you’ll agree that Mango is a step forward, I’m all too aware that there’s still much to do. Two areas we’re working hard to address in future releases are languages with complex scripts and extending services to more markets. Let me briefly explain.

Complex scripts are used to write languages such as Arabic and Hindi, where the displayed character depends on its neighbor (“contextual shaping”), and languages written right-to-left such as Hebrew and Urdu. Many of the controls used in Windows Phone require enhancement to properly display such scripts.

You’ll see the first fruit of this work in Mango: text messages will render properly in Arabic and Hebrew. Clever programmers can also create apps in some of these languages. But Internet Explorer Mobile, email, and the copy and paste feature can still become confused by complex scripts in Mango. The good news is we understand the problem and know what needs to be done.

Extending services such as Marketplace or Xbox LIVE to more markets, on the other hand, is a very different type of challenge—as much legal and organizational as it is technical. But we’re working hard to scale up our engineering effort from a couple dozen countries to the entire world.

I hope to write about both challenges, and how we’re addressing them, in future blog entries. In the meantime, I’d love to hear what you think.

Hope this means Zune Pass for Canada and other countries.

who's excited about Skype now? with the Facebook deal, Skype is going to dominate on PC and on mobile.

I said this when I first saw ms was buying skype it was a bigger deal and there was a very good reason they "overspent" (according to many in the tech community) for skype.

In a few yrs skype will be everywhere and will be worth far more than 8 billion..... I think this will end up being one of the smartest purchases ms has ever made.

When they get wp7 (and probably ios/android via apps) communicating with facebook and the pc and all of those on the tv via kinect and the cable companies its easy to see this will be everywhere and the defacto standard when it comes to video calling.

also saw this on wppu today.... we have seen this kind of thing using iphones before but cool to see wp7 being used for the same kind of thing (and the resulting video is actually quite impressive).

I can't wait for devs to start updating their apps to 7.1. I wonder if its gonna be like in iOS pre multitasking were you could update your app and it would be compatible with 3.0 beta (was 3.0 the multitasking version?) release and pre-multitasking version.

Also: multitasking + 60fps in games will be awesome. Doodle Jump NEEDS this. And fruit ninja.

Wow, the Skype/FB thing is huge. Too bad there hasn't been any talk of Skype integration in Mango, the acquisition is coming too late. I'm sure Apollo will tie FB, Skype, MSN, etc. together, plus Windows 8.

Maybe I SHOULD wait for gen 3 devices?

Whenever I see videos of the "me" series, I'm always thinking about the last scene, and when they're done filming.

"Alright, we're done here. Good job everyone."
"Great, uhm, can I have my iPhone/Droid back?"

It feels so not real and kinda reminds me of the Zune videos, with that light hipster vibe.

So wait, say I have this American Focus here and I want Japanese display language or Korean or whatever, I can't have an option to install it on my own?

Why must I rely on operators and handset makers?

Most carrier-friendly OS on the market. :lol It seems to be their decision to support other languages or not, they get the support calls after all, not Microsoft or the manufacturer. T-Mobile, for example, decided to ship the HD7 with only the US keyboard installed. It doesn't even have a Spanish language option, which is crazy.

You're fine with an unbranded device. That way you'll get the raw OS, without any operator bullshit.

Yes, try to unbrand my Focus. :(

How hard it is to allow us to install our own language?

can anyone elxplain to me why in People hub I only see facebook updates from certain people? why some people's posts do not show up but if I use facebook app or PC, they are there? These are people in my contact list as well

I'm surprised to learn that an american GSM phone would work in Japan.. I thought all of the japanese networks were proprietary..

In Mango, you can have a japanese keyboard.. but in this version on my focus, no east-asian languages are available as display options for the entire OS. You can set the locale to japanese and see dates in japanese format, etc.. but not the entire OS.

edit -

If those people have platform applications turned off, Windows phone won't be able to pull their details and posts from Facebook. The official application can, but applications using Facebook's API cannot.

There's a setting that only shows updates from people you have on your contact list under people settings.

Okay Zune Social Tagger = WINRAR....

Granted it's gonna take me a fuck ton of time... but so goes tagging your music no matter what... this shit is the real deal though!

Thanks for the hook up WP7-GAF!!!

yes, that explains it thanks.

edit: what's weird is I have one friend whose friend's posts to his wall show up in Hub but not his posts.

yes I have that unchecked. I believe it is individual user facebook settings

bastages! give me your info on my phone says me!

Oooo I get the cool overlay verses just a big random wall of my albums I have art wise for a background in zune on my pc now for the album's I've fixed with zune social tagger.

I haven't done all of my shit yet, but I did about 20 albums. I figure if I do 20 a day for the next couple weeks I'll be good. LOL

We just need the public in general to understand it's all about the lens quality in general when it comes to taking pictures and get over the megapixel thing. It would be a huge boon for everyone IMO.

yeah, I have one like that too. It probably has to do with their facebook privacy settings.

is zune marketplace not working for anyone on here ?

it was working fine in the morning and evening but at night it's not letting me download any app besides music.

One minute its verifying for a good minute then it says Cant get this information at the moment, Check again in a little while.

I tried to download an App on ZunePC , same thing there as well.

is this a normal for Windows 7 Phones to do this ?

and they need to stop cramming so many megapixels in these tiny sensors.

I feel like 4th and Mayor performs better but the official app provides better information. Its easier to see your friends, leader boards, and so on. It also informs you of friend requests and lets you accept/reject

4th&Mayor has been crashing on me the last few days. I already un-install and re-install twice and it was still crashing, so I switch back to the official app. It's a little slower and not as pretty but usable. Anyone else having problem with 4th&Mayor?

I have a LG Optimus 7 running the Mango beta and had a 4th Gen iPod Touch running the iOS5 beta.

Disclaimers:
  • The Mango beta has been very stable for me—no crashes—and I can't even point out any bugs. The iOS5 beta 1 was very buggy, so much so that I downgraded back to a jailbroken 4.3.3 before iOS5 beta 2 was released. iOS5 beta 2 still has many bugs. Given Apple's track record (and ability to push out updates with minimal carrier interference) I expect the official iOS5 release to be stable. However, the state of the iOS5 beta makes it hard to tell if certain changes, like the aggressive 'assistance' of the iOS5 software keyboard is a feature or bug. (WP7 already had the better keyboard imo *shrug*)
  • My iPod Touch was lost/stolen during my commute last week :(, so I can't do a side by side comparison. I haven't replaced it yet, but I'm considering just getting an iPad 2 now that a jailbreak is available for it. I won't be installing iOS5 beta on any replacement, that's for sure.

Ok, so back to the question: how do they stack up?

They are pretty close actually (not surprising considering Apple stole quite a few of WP7's features :P). It's worth pointing out that where Apple has copied WP7 I can't find any improvements added and I can't even say Apple got it quite right. For example, Apple's version of toast notifications can't be flicked off the screen like the WP7 implementation. The iOS5 camera shortcut on the lockscreen, and the repurposed volume control/snapshot button, isn't as elegant as a dedicated camera button. WP7 still has the edge there, at least until we see what the next generation handsets that will be launching with these OSs have to offer. Both Mango and iOS5, like their predecessors, provide a smooth interactive experience. WP7 still lags behind iOS when downloading content; those queueing dots will be the death of me :/.

The iOS5 Notifications Center has bested the WP7 Live Tiles imo. iOS5 provides richer, more detailed notifications, can be accessed anywhere and, er, offers two widgets. Live Tiles are still underdeveloped and yet to fully utilized (can I get a double wide Live Tile for RSS reader that will display the headlines already? is that too much to ask?) and while it's nice that WP7 has removed the 15 live tile limit, I haven't found 15 useful Live Tiles yet. When developers revamp their apps to allow pinning particular sections to the start screen it might become very useful, but that's a maybe. As an app organization and app finder tool, Live Tiles+list of apps is still superior to the iOS grid of icons, so there's that.

Where WP7 is still far ahead of iOS is the hub concept and the app design. While iOS5 has the better notifications system, I do very much like making groups of people and linking particular inboxes together that can be placed on the start screen in a live tile. The twitter integration isn't working yet in mango so can't compare it with the iOS5 twitter integration. The music/video hub is the best mobile media experience, hands down, especially now that I can subscribe and download podcasts on the go. The WP7 apps just look and interact better than the iOS versions and it's a stunning contrast when comparing two official apps released by the same company (e.g. TuneIn WP7 app vs TuneIn iOS app). WP7 hasn't reached feature parity with iOS yet, it doesn't have as many apps available and just doesn't do as much, but what WP7 does do, it does very well.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like MS really pushed out a good OS.

Guys, I really want a Windows Phone, but a few hurdles obstruct my path...?

You know, I was in a similar situation when the phone launched. Short answer, to me it wasn't worth it.

I've been using apple products since 2004 (iBook) and have had an iPhone since the first ones dropped in price shortly after they launched. I also have an iPad, iMac, and Macbook, so obviously I'm tied closely to Apple.

I wanted the Windows phone for 2 reasons...try something new and the link to Xbox.

I was VERY satisfied with the link to Xbox (besides some of my favorite games not being there, but that's slowly changing) but there were a few things that bothered me about the phone.

A lot of those things are going to be fixed with Mango (multi-tasking, twitter integration) but others I'm not sure yet. I like maps on iOS way more than WP7 (and I use maps all the time going to clients houses). I really don't like the touch sensitive buttons. The battery on the Surround wasn't nearly as good as the iPhone. Also, the WP7 models feel flimsy compared to the iPhone 4.

Another thing that bothered me, and this sounds like it could apply to you, it annoyed me that I had most of my stuff in the Apple ecosystem, EXCEPT for the phone :p

But then when I'd think the opposite way, I'd think about how I'd be missing achievements for playing my mobile games by being on iOS.

So what did I do? I switched to iPhone, and got an unlocked Focus on the cheap, that I basically use as a portable game player for XBLA games.

The nice part is, when Mango comes out, I can try both. I'm really excited for Mango, and figure I'll pop my sim into the Focus for 2 weeks and see how I get by.

I actually don't WANT to be in the mindset "everything has to be the same, I need to use all Apple products." It's really rather silly, especially when I see friends with a PC, iPad, Android phone and not a single fuck is given ;)

Garmin released a Turn-by-Turn navigation app for $39.99.

Download Garmin StreetPilot® and get Garmin® navigation, similar to the premium features on Garmin’s renowned nüvi® personal navigators. Designed exclusively for your Windows Phone, this application works on both 3G and EDGE networks and turns your device into a GPS navigator with turn-by-turn voice-prompted directions.
With Garmin StreetPilot®, you’ll always have access to the most up-to-date map data available. And to minimize data usage, maps are downloaded on demand for areas relevant to your route. Garmin StreetPilot® also includes real-time traffic updates at no extra cost. So you’ll know which areas to avoid as you travel.

Garmin StreetPilot® stores map data on your device so you can continue to view route details as you travel in and out of coverage areas. In addition, Garmin StreetPilot® lets you browse maps that have already been downloaded and stored on your device. Instead of downloading additional data for areas outside your travel area, Garmin StreetPilot® only accesses the map data you need to navigate your route.

Features include:
-Always up-to-date maps for the U.S. and Canada, downloaded to your device on demand
-Voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions including street names
-Real-time traffic updates included at no additional cost
-Automatic map storage so you can browse maps you’ve recently viewed outside of data coverage areas
-Works great at both 3G and Edge connection speeds
-Speed limits for most major roads
-Integrated Local Search
-Millions of points of interest
-Lane assist with junction view for complicated interchanges
-Address book integration to navigate to contacts
-Current weather conditions and forecast

An update has been submited to fix that particular issue. It's unusable for me, as well.

My live tiles have all died, I'm going to blame AccuWeather. I have a v1.3 Focus that will not update to the SSL version of NoDo. Multiple resets do not help.

Anyone else with this problem?

Anyone else having an issue with Facebook chat? Everytime it signs me in it signs me right back out. Very frustrating. I already have my Windows live id linked to my Facebook account.

I'm ditching Accuweather. My live tile ONLY updates if I access the app (which kinda defeats the purpose of a live tile...), and it does it slowly at that. I'm going back to the Weather Channel.

I assume email tiles and messaging tiles are considered live as well? Just checking to see if I'm under the 15 live tile count.

3rd party live tiles hardly works for me.

I will just wait for Mango because I know Mango can fix it, it can cure cancer after all.

Alright, I think I'm going to get a Windows Phone.

Anyone got any suggestions for a phone on AT&T? Which is the best? How much space, screen size, CPU, etc.?

Biggest screen is the HD7S.. at 4.3" inches..

Samsung Focus is a good phone as well.. has a 4" super amoled screen.

They all have the same cpu, ram, etc.

1Ghz snapdragon, 512MB Ram

I have the focus.. and I like it a lot.

On at&t, I'd go with a focus or a hd7s based on which phone you like better... go to a store and handle them both if you can.

A couple things I've noticed in Mango that I haven't seen anyone mention.

1. When you try and power down, it no longer does it automatically. You have to swipe down to confirm
2. If you search in bing and there is an app/game that matches your query, the first item will be a link to launch the app or download it

Reading this was helpful, but I think I'm still going to get a Windows Phone. The HTC HD7S to be exact.

I was think the other day the thing I really do on my iPhone the absolute most was check Twitter, Facebook, NeoGAF and browse Safari. I would occasionally use other apps, but not enough to really hold me down.

Also, luckly for me, while I started using iCloud, I'm using it for everything but email and contacts. I keep those synced with my gmail account. So moving all that over is no issue. And with Twitter and Facebook on the phone already and with Mobile IE being a great mobile browser, I think I'm well enough to jump ship.

And hey, I'll still have my iPad for iOS apps (for now).

But yeah, I'm eying the HD7S. The main reason I'm choosing that over the Focus is not because of the screen size, but rather the microUSB port being on the bottom of the phone, which lets me get a dock for it to charge it (the iPhone dock spoiled me).

This is such a good reason. I'm still pissed that I couldn't find a phone with the MicroUSB port at the bottom (the HD7 is too large for me). I want my next WP to have inductive charging or at least a fricking USB port at the bottom, geez.

oh Best Buy.... really? really?

Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7
Of the different smartphone platforms, the Windows Mobile line has undergone the most changes. In its earliest configuration as Pocket PC 2000, the OS was originally designed to work as a PDA platform. In 2003, Windows Mobile was released and quickly found a home as an enterprise smartphone platform due to its tight integration with other Microsoft systems.

Although touchscreen-based versions of platforms have been around for some time, Windows Mobile was often hindered by its early stylus-based design
Microsoft is looking to remedy all that with the latest incarnation, Windows Phone 7. Designed to be recognizable to anyone who uses Windows-based computers, the WP7 OS represents a big step up from previous Windows Mobile systems. The Windows Phone 7 menu functions similarly to a PC’s “Start” menu, providing at-a-glance access to all of your favorite programs, apps and accessories. Syncing with your home computer allows you quick access to all of your saved Microsoft Office material, including Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and more.

Windows Phone 7 is an excellent option for anyone who wants a familiar system that replicates their home computing experience.
