It's not dual core :P
I got foiled as I saw the pics of the phone while watching the epic baseball game last night. Didn't read about the phone till this morning when Paul Thurott tweeted his article. I just rechecked the article too, and it says dual core. Now though he has that part crossed out.

New I should have just read this thread instead.

t-mo usa HD7 firmware update results after 1 day-

battery life is much improved. been using wifi which use to drain my batt. now, not so much.

signal readings seem much more accurate. 2G is now showing at my house when previously it would show 3G.

"can't send" message hasn't appeared yet after sending texts.

It's good to see phones with a decent amount of storage finally being announced. Does anyone know if the 32GB of memory in the Toshiba phone is SD card based or integrated memory?

Just jumping to conclusions. It's my favorite game. :lol

And yes, it was all over twitter. The unofficial Windows Phone dev podcast tweeted this:

Then you have the tweet from that Microsoft guy who wanted to announce something within 24 hours and Brandon Watson who initially said that it would be awesome if devs could get early hands on. And last, but not least:

But it's obviously the wpdev podcast tweet that kicked it off.

I was meaning more the news that it would be 7712 instead of 7720.. which I now see was the wpdevpodcast tweet.

edit:

Installing the 7712 update via Zune now..

I think I should just channel brotkasten and let you know that it is very unlikely we'll see any dual core phones this year. But iirc, you had said you were waiting for next year before upgrading, so it's all good.

Just typed that entire thing on my Omnia 7. The virtual keyboard in landscape is godly. :lol

In my humble opinion, it is THE best soft keyboard on any platform. Not just for the auto-correct, which is also great on iOS, but when you get down to correcting words, and you click on a word, 9/10 I get the right option below right away. And with mango, the auto correct feels even better, and the options below even smarter. So it's quick to type and quick to correct, plus you can long press for the tilde if you need to, but its so good I don't use that often unless I'm using non-dictionary words like usernames and stuff.

WHAT!!!

Completely agree. Imo, this is without a doubt that finest software keyboard available. It takes my favorite parts about the iOS keyboard (transitions to alternate character menus without lifting your finger.. google didn't add this into android until gingerbread) and the correction features and responsiveness really put it a cut above. It's the only software keyboard that I've never had a problem with lag while using.

Just jumped into Windows Phone with the Samsung Omnia 7. Seems a nice phone. Surprisingly excellent build quality, the right balance between weightyness and not being too cumbersome and the jump to a 4" screen is lovely. Coming fresh off a 3 year stint with an iPhone 3G the OS feels like a really nice change as well.

Updating my phone now with.. something. Not really sure what the update is (Mango?) but it's updating something through Zune on my desktop.

No, you can't get Mango unless you do a work around to enable the Developer beta.

You're probably getting a NoDo update, or something.

Mango isn't till later this year. It's either NoDo, a security update, or an OEM firmware upgrade.

Fair enough, there's no rush. I just (wrongly) assumed Mango was coming now but obviously not.

A brand new firmware update is probably getting abit ahead of myself when I've not even set up my contacts properly yet.

Oh, one more question that came to my mind: When Mango is released, will it run perfectly smooth on "older" WP7-phones like the Omnia 7? Or will it be a case of "well, it runs, but not really smooth. You should buy one of the new WP7-devices"?

Mango runs really well on my Focus.

I can't believe they still haven't added separate volume for headphones and without.

i really hope that Samsung slider has a d-pad

WP NoDo and Mango are the smoothest mobile OS out there. Mango beta ran really well on my Optimus 7

Fantastic, that frees up one more tile on my home screen, buh bye Twitter app, off to the side list you go.
I don't know about that. I've enabled Twitter, but it doesn't seem to have done anything.

Edit: Nevermind. I had my "what's new" pivot set to Facebook only. Twitter is showing up.

For any of the long suffering Venue Pro owners out there: Dell FINALLY released a firmware update (to T-Mo in the US, at least). Plug into Zune and start downloading.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. After 8 months of near silence, Dell deems us poor Venue Pro adoptors worthy enough to enjoy cutting edge features such as WiFi and not freezing up every ten minutes. Amazing! This should have been the flagship phone for WP7; now it is the phone that I actively convince my friends NOT to buy.

Zune is saying I need to update the beta software before I can even see my phone connected and get the update. Upon trying to update Zune, it gives me an error saying it cannot find something blah blah. Seems my dad hasn't updated his computer in a while, so I'm hoping this fixes the problem and allows me to update Zune.

Anyone else had this problem and can shed some light on it?

Any reason why Amazon would region lock their app? I was wondering why Amazon didn't have an app in the Marketplace... just now I was browsing their website on my Omnia, and it prompts me to download their app. I tap the link, it brings me to the Marketplace, but no "Install" button. WTF?

EDIT: my phone is an Orange(FR) branded Omnia, but I'm in the US on an AT&T card right now.

So I only need to connect my device to the zune beta and it'll update to the newest release? (already running mango).

On the blog they made it look like I'd need to do everything again..

You just need to connect it to the zune beta and go into settings>update and it will check for and find the update.

edit -

New 7712 discoveries -

You can link someone's twitter account to their existing contact on your phone.. you just need to tap the @username in a tweet they made, etc. then you'll be taken to a different profile card with all of their tweets.. and from there you can choose "Link" and choose one of your existing contacts.

Once this is done, you'll get "Mention on Twitter" on their profile card.

Next, IE 9 on WP7 can now use google music.

Had dinner with a friend, come back and 7712 is out? Awesome.

If someone told me 6 months ago that Microsoft is capable of doing something like this ... :lol

Still borked... I uninstalled Zune and it still prompts for the update and says that there isn't any to be found. Aside from that, it won't detect my phone... Ugh this is frustrating.

Aaaaaand I hate them again. Fucking Microsoft marketing won again. They don't get branding. They just DON'T.

“Although we will be marketing the ‘Mango’ release as ‘Windows Phone 7.5′, the 7.5 phones (will be running) ‘Windows Phone OS 7.1′. While not an ideal pairing, it’s similar to how Windows 7 is actually Windows OS version 6.1.”

Really? How about calling it Windows Phone, like it was intended, and then keep the OS version separate. Now they got the same problem as before. "Hey, check out my Windows Phone 7.5 ... phonedevicehandset". Fucking idiots.

e: Can you believe that the dev team had to fight the marketing team, just to get the "Series" removed? They even threw a fucking party, when it was announced internally.

Well, if you're upset about it you can tweet at them from your freshly updated Mango device.

imo they shouldn't call it "windows phone" at all.. since it's nothing like windows.

Wait for Windows 8 :p And I like the name actually, it makes people angry!

Installing mango is a pain in the ass. All this uninstall/reinstall programs business is taking me hours -_-

I'm too lazy upset to do it right now. I mean, come on, how is this *not* fucking stupid?

And no, it's nothing like Windows and that's the problem. This name is hurting the OS. Here's a great comment I found today at dilbert (the author accepted Watson's challenge).

I'd never use a Windows phone because it's, you know, Windows.

I don't have anything against Windows on my PC. That's where it belongs and I use it at work and home every day. It doesn't belong on a phone.

The rational part of me knows Windows on a phone is not the same Windows on a PC and I shouldn't judge it based on the name without trying it. However, the gut-reaction part of me says nope, Windows doesn't translate well to a phone. I'm going to stick with my gut, and Android, even if it isn't terribly rational.

In the end the competing OS's will stabilize and pretty much have the same features. I think smart phones will mostly be differentiated by hardware and battery life.
It's not the first time I hear or read this.

Yeah, it's not the first time I've seen or read it either.

I dove in to this because I liked Zune and I enjoy trying new and different operating systems.

They've got me at this point.. people still look at me funny when I talk about the merits of Windows Phone as a platform.

edit:

I have to re-iterate how much I love that IE 9 on the phone works with google music now.. that's 2000 songs I don't have to sync to my device now..

Wow! I don't mind if he's not willing to try a windows phone, however I find it sad that he rejected the offer, that ultimately, would've ended with $1,000 for charity if he didn't like it.

smh.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. The author accepted the offer. Move on.

The comment was on the blog post, I don't think it was Scott's post.

Well, cool. Updating now. For some reason my Zune was on 4.7, so I had to re-install the beta.

So, when we roll back to No-Do to upgrade to the final Mango, are we going to lose everything basically?

Sounds like something I heard from "those" people - read, users of other platforms. It's a dumb reaction really. Better go with a name that is familiar, than a complete new name no one recognizes. On the other hand I like the Zune brand and "Zune Phone" would totally work I think.

Right, right. Scott accepted the challenge. What I posted was just a comment from someone else.

Here's Scott's comment:
My first thought was that this was a bad idea for Brandon. I make my living wittily criticizing things. But on second thought, all the Windows Phone needs to do is make phone calls, handle email, have battery life that lasts half a day, do a little web browsing without locking up and it will win. I'll give you an update in a few weeks.

You're losing everything that is not in the cloud and every new text and call history since your update from NoDo.

What are people's thoughts on Zune?

Today is my very first experience with Zune in any capacity at all. iTunes has always been suffecient for me. The service itself looks and runs very nice.. it's largely offering me the same functionality as iTunes does for basic music listening etc but wrapped in a much nicer package. Are many of you using Zune as your main media playing format or do you just use it to sync your WP7 handsets and still use iTunes/other services?

Also, how are people finding Zune pass? I have a free 3 month trial with my contract which I'm obviously going to give a go, but I'd rather not get too deep into it before I have to make a decision on whether to pay for the continuing service (and therefore risk losing all the shit I downloaded if I didn't). Is it worth trying out and paying for each month?

Okay so I'm semi confused.... For all of us that installed Mango a few weeks ago or however long it's been... are we getting this new mango update being pushed to all?

Or is what I have now what I have until I have to roll back to NoDo for the official release?

Installed the long awaited firmware update on my DVP yesterday. The wi-fi and freezing issues are gone, and the camera has some more options added to it(pics are still pretty much always blurry though).

And now the wait for mango begins...

I just finished installing the latest update on my Focus after using Mango for all a couple weeks ago.

Zune is my main player, but for music only... I'm a VLC guy for video (que the hate m/sm player fans or mpc fans)... I have foobar for back up if needed...

Still it works fine for me, and I love the included support the marketplace brings in terms of podcasts verses having to manually add and manage things. It's also got the slickest package of all media players in terms of album art, visualization, smart playlists, user accounts etc...

The only knock would be it's not as lightweight as say foobar or banshee or amarok or winamp, and people might feel it's slightly over kill. The only other big downside is it's Windows only so your SOL on OSX and Linux. That being said with dual cores being base line and everyone having RAM out the ass these days I'm not sure how much that matters to the average user (it's more an issue for pro users that want to listen to music while trying to do other shit that they need the resources for). Plus itunes is already a full featured deal as well so it's no more lightweight than zune is, and lacks all the cool graphical and UI nods.

They all ultimately just play music though.

How did you get the update? I used that program that ran the backup and set your phone up for you. Then it just prompted for the 2 updates and you were good to go outside of grabbing the beta version of Zune to work with.

What do I have to do now to update?
