One thing I hate about my HD7: O2 have changed the default search to yahoo and there is no way to change it. So when I press the search button in IE (constantly due to the cap active button) it goes to a badly formatted yahoo site, rather than the bing application.

I hope in mango you can change this behaviour, and inn the future this change should not be allowed.

I always forget Americans count September as the beginning of fall. I understand fall to be October period.

It's a tweet, who gives a shit? Why not focus on the link which shows that, even with crappy hardware sales, the marketplace momentum has not slowed down? As a device owner, that's the part that's most exciting.

The problem with a new OS is that, usually, the apps situation is directly tied to hardware sales. MS should be given credit for the apps situation and the fact that there is still a lot of developer excitement around the platform. Every week, I get a new app that I thought I'd have to leave behind when I left iOS and Android. Not only is it unexpected given the platform's slow growth, its downright bizarre. And yet here we are, barreling towards 30k apps (or more) and app acceleration is INCREASING? Really? You have to figure at some point the reality of hardware sales will slow down app development, and yet with the mango release devs will have even more tools and so the app growth is unlikely to slow down this year.

What's this rant about? That tweet was actually GOOD NEWS, despite the Apollo tease.

Calm down, my friend. Everything is cool. Nobody is angry. It just remembered me of the terror and horror we had to live through, when Microsoft couldn't get NoDo out. Ah, the bittersweet memories.

Anyways! Who wants to do the next thread? I can offer help.

If you don't use any O2 services that are on the device, you should flash a carrier-free ROM.

Question of a soon-Omnia 7-owner: Is there a good website for getting information about good apps? I guess the Favorite-lists in the Zune-marketplace are a good start, but anything beyond that? thx

I'm getting a bad feeling that when the new Mango phones drop it'll be months before Rogers in Canada pushes it to my Focus.

Just a little feeling tho.

we all assume that the update would release before the phones but releasing the new phones first and making existing WP owners wait makes much more sense. heck, that strategy has done wonders for android.

I'm not sure how Optus will handle the WP7 Mango updates. I recieved my Omnia 7 10 days ago and it updated to both NoDo and 7392 instantly, so I can't really speak from experience.

Speaking of app growth, what apps are everyone still missing? Personally I'm still sad an official Mint app is still a no show. Pageonce is crap compared.

Amazon Cloud Player (using the site is too clunky, though it works)
Google Maps
Google YouTube App

And updates to the following apps:

Facebook
Kickbox
Youversion Bible
MyFitnessPal

I'm sure there's more apps that I'd love to have, just can't think of them now.

WOAH MIND BLOWN!

Tried the google music beta again since someone said it works now. I tired before, and figured maybe it didn't work with the old beta cause of flash. This time after hearing it works now I was like maybe my 1st inclination was right that I thought it was html 5, but just chalked it up to flash.

Anyways it loaded which was cool. Couldn't get songs to play, but then realized you had to click the little arrow to bring up options. Anyways I hit played song and it played. Not only that though.

You know the new pause forward and rewind buttons at the top when you play regular mp3s from your phone. Well google music co-opped that and put a weird symbol at the bottom of the little bar. It also let me pause and play the song too! Just couldn't use forward or back buttons.

Still mind blown!!!

EDIT: Oh and the song keeps playing as you multitask!!!

I was excited that my news reader (next Gen) had an update that said it supported mango devices. Alas, I can't see a difference. Its definitely not running in the background, which is what I assume mango support means.

That means "I don't break horribly when used on Mango" for the moment.. until microsoft opens mango app submissions next month.

I read that Mango will get free turn-by-turn voice navigation. Anyone here with Mango used it yet?
I tried using it the other day, but it wouldn't work.

I think my phones GPS is somewhat broken.

This is why I kept my phone unlocked and unbranded.

Ugh...I keep looking at the Dell Venue Pro. The review said it's a good phone not great and I really should keep my money for the next batch of Windows Phone.

sighh, i think i'm destined to have to wait for mango.
the mangoforall update programme now no longer crashes but it still doesn't seem to backup the phone, nor does it install the update.
ah well, it won't be too long until mango's released... right? :(

it's here, woo woo.

is it true what skype will come with mango?

Ok thanks guys.

On a side note, I love the Update names, Mango, Apollo. I wonder what the next will be. NoDo sucks, but that wasn't a big update.

Tango is rumored to be the next update, coming between Mango and Apollo.

It's a shame there's no WhatsApp on Windows Phone yet. That was my go to messaging service on iPhone. I successfully convinced almost everybody I text on a regular basis to get it, and now I'm the phone who can't access it since moving to WP7 this week..

That aside, I'm loving Windows Phone. The Omnia 7 is a really, really nice piece of hardware and I can't get enough of the OS. Such a brilliantly wonderful change from iOS.

With the new communication APIs that come with mango and the Nokia deal, the WhatsApp shouldn't be too far off. Instant messaging pre-mango was really a chore.

Which should I choose if I were to buy my mum her first smartphone? Android or WP7 OS?

While Android marketplace seems well stocked with apps, WP7 seems much easier to use right?

Ok, now I can connect. But Push notifications, or any, work if I exit the app despite setting it to run in the background

Biggest thing is even though we all have Mango cause we kicked over to the beta... it's still beta and just getting in the hands of devs. So in reality they are just getting their hands on the new shit like we are. We need to remember to give them time to get better apps out now that the feature set doesn't suck.

That being said if we don't see a big up tick in apps by the end of the year I'm gonna be disappointed because while not all a shit ton of issues that might have kept devs away are fixed in Mango. With all the fucking new APIs I fully expect more legit apps coming to a zune marketplace near you. If not then we have a bigger problem on our hands.

Fast app switching alone is going to make mango much more usable from an app standpoint. My biggest gripe is the slow load times of third party apps. That's the biggest buzzkill when switching between ios, android, and wp7.

I have a iphone 4 now and had a 3gs before this one but i think my next phone will be one with WP7. The user interface and how easy it is reminds me of iOS. Android is not an option because of the fragmentation and no updates with some of the manufacturers. When i see android i think of symbian.

WP7 is one of the easiest to use smartphone OSes. Also, the UI is clean, the fonts are clear and easy to read.

I'd wait for mango devices to come out and let your mom play with one in a store if at all possible.. I suspect she'd be able to use one without much instruction if she has even the slightest technical ability.

But how many apps does your mother actually want/need? (esp for her first smartphone)

A couple of months ago I chose a WP7 device for my mother (coming from a bad touchscreen feature phone). She doesn't use a lot of apps, so the priority was that the OS should get the basics right (calls, messaging, camera, easy to use). WP7 is great for those things.

Overall. she is very satisfied with the phone.

She still doesn't use a lot of apps. She has a weather app and she now uses e-mail (which she didn't before).

If I were you, I'd go with WP7 over Android.

Yep, used it last night. I paired the phone over Bluetooth to my car and the directions were announced through the sound system.

The implementation leaves a little to be desired, though. You have to tap the phone's screen to have it announce the next direction. If you deviate from the path you also have to tap the screen to recalculate the route.

Yes, my mother sucks with technology but could easily use my Trophy. So, i'd say Wp7 too.

No iPhone? It seems like every old person I see with a smartphone has one. Seems widely adopted by the technologically illiterate crowd; though I was shocked to learn that my father-in-law doesn't really know how to use his. My two year old son was rocking my wife's 3G by himself and this guy can't find his pictures. I call iOS Fisher-Price computing, but I suppose even that's too complicated for some people.

If it is just between Android and a WP, I'd definitely say WP for the simplicity of operation. I personally think apps are overrated. Most good ones will be on both. Most people use tens of apps, not tens of thousands.

If she can hold out, I'd wait for the new Mango phones in a couple months.

Yeah, thanks for the advice guys....don't think she really wants all those games and apps...standard news apps will do... Will wait out for Mango...Besides HTC, LG, Samsung, any other manufacturer who might pick up the OS?

Nokia is coming on board pretty soon.... they are the "big" manufacturer going forward for wp7. Their rumored device for this year is the "sea ray" (n9 version for wp7).
