I'd like to see what others would do with the Mango OT. I'd probably just take the current OP and update it.
well i didn't mean that only you should make the OT. i am just saying that maybe and OT like this or even better. =D

i guess i shouldve just said that from the start. XD

edit: also while i was wondering, if i should buy the focus now and lock my self in for a 2year contract or wait for the new batch of phones?

I'd gladly help others with the creation of the new OT.

I personally wouldn't buy a current WP on contract. We'll get new devices in the next 3 months.

Just updated to the Mango beta version. And yeah...wow. Aside from podcast subscriptions (with OTA downloading!) and groups there's nothing mindblowing, but the sum of all of the smaller parts if fantastic. Everything feels faster, more intuitive and just better. I really hope Microsoft can competently market this and get it into people's hands, because people really need to use this to see just how much better it feels than other systems.

Is the W7 UI customizable? I might look into it in 19 or so months when its upgrade time again. But I absolutely hate the UI. With a passion. But goddamn is every demo and youtube of the UI I see blazing fast. Android was choppy as shit for a while until recently on some of the newer phones. W7 just glides, it looks to have a shitload of potential.

You're the first person who I've ever heard say that. What makes you "hate it with a passion"? I'm just curious honestly, iOS/Android just make me think of icon-filled desktops.

It's WP(7) by the way, not W7 :)

And yeah, in the smartphone world, if you're gonna upgrade in over a year and a half, there's not much point into looking too deeply at the current options. WP, iOS, and Android will each have evolved a bit by then.

To answer your question:
-design: you can change the accent color (for the tiles for example)
-content: you can change everything, your phone is your phone, with your friends, music, pictures, XBL avatar on it if you want.

you can change the tiles on the main "window" but not their default size. So you are kind of limited, but not so much if you have creativity. There are some fine exemples on this thread.

But as discussed a few pages back, Android allows much more, but that is a problem not exactly a solution. WP has some design rules that make sense.

P.s. I hate the icon-filled android dash.

Anybody who dislikes WP metro design doesn't have a soul.

Current OP plus update would work best, imo.
+1
or 'like' or whatever the kids are into these days

maybe just make a couple images transparent backgrounds.
add new phones.
list of new features.
etc.

really the current |OT| is better most |OT|'s

EDIT:

Already asked this but I'll ask again. Should I wait for the new batch of wp7 phones to come out or just buy the focus for 2 yrs.

I asking because my current phone (iPhone 3g) overheats and it about time I got a new phone. Also from what I've seen so far, there is no second gen phone I like (in terms of looks alone).

Just been playing around with mango and have found the best feature.

The snooze time is now an industry standard 9 minutes rather than 5 in NoDo. =D

I noticed that today in the morning ^^

One thing I noticed is that 3rd party apps still seem to have the old color palette. Is that something the developers should/would need to fix, or is this an OS thing?

I'm looking at purchasing a Windows Phone 7 after having to deal with my partially broken Blackberry Pearl for 2 months. My Blackberry has been with me for 2 years, and it's been slowly falling apart since May/June. The microphone randomly stopped working so I can't make calls, and it constantly freezes and requires battery pulls up to 4 times a day. I'm on MTS (up in Canada) which only supports 850/1900. I was originally going to pick up an iPhone 4 until I learned that I would have to upgrade my plan to a special more expensive "iPhone" plan. So I said fuck that, and now I'm either picking up a new phone that's a Blackberry, Android or WP7.

After a bit of research I found that the only WP7 phones that support 850/1900 are the HTC Surround, HTC HD7S, and the Samsung Focus are supported. I've found a way to get an unlocked HTC Surround (Puremobile), but I have two questions:

-Is it any good? Only having 448mb of ram is worrying...
-Should I just wait for the new WP7 phones that are coming out in the fall? I was going to originally, but I'm going to need a phone once school starts in September and I doubt my Blackberry can hold out till then. On top of that, I'm not even sure if the new phones will support the right bands I need. D:

Any advice?

You can pick up some first gen stuff pretty cheap now. They will still run everything great.

So if money (or waiting) is an issue. I would jump in now
and then probably regret it later

What the the announced phones (if any), and when should the second generation phones be available? D:
My guess would be September possibly early October. Latest November. (Nokia should announce their phone in October)

Nothing announced for the US yet. Currently people are speculating September.

If it makes you feel better about 1st gen devices my Surround has never had a problem running anything. I'm running Mango currently and its still blazing fast. Still, if you don't mind waiting a couple months you'll probably be able to pick up something better.

I really don't think I can survive all September without a phone. It'll be my first year at university, and I'll absolutely be fucked if I don't have a phone for the first month, considering I'll be sharing the car with my dad. I guess these are the two best options for me right now...

-Samsung Galaxy S II
-HTC Surround + new Xbox 360 (my current 360 is out of warranty and red ringed)

Considering I know jack about either phone (I've been with a shitty Blackberry for two years, so I'm not really up to date on the new phones), what do you guys think is a better option? Either way it'll cost about the same.

I'm certainly a little biased but I would urge you to go for the Surround if you're at all interested in the Windows Phone concept and UI. Hardware wise it can't hold up to the Galaxy of course, but the OS is so much more efficient than Android that it'll feel as fast as can be. Plus, hey, extra cheevos for your Gamerscore.

Are there any specific apps you're looking for? WP has a lot of the more notable ones by now, though certainly not as many as Android.

The GSII is bigger, lighter, has the better screen, but it runs Android. The Surrounds build quality is supposed to be pretty good, but it's really thick and heavy, due to the slide out speaker. I'd try to get the Samsung Focus.

I'm just curious, what's so bad about the HD7S? IIRC, the biggest flaw in the HD7 was the screen.
Not sure, but if it uses the same battery as the regular HD7, the battery life still sucks. 1230 mAh is really not enough for a phone like that.

So I have been playing around with Mango this morning and here are some of my observations (seperated into positive, neutral and negatives):

Positives
+ Love the bing music and works well
+ Translation is awesome in Bing vision
+ Thumbs up for the repeat single track function
+ LOVE the 9 minute snooze
+ I smiled when i saw the metro emoticons in messaging (spent a minute sending all of them to myself)
+ IE9 works really well, love it
+ Overall performance of Bing Maps has improved and i like how you favourite places are always marked on the map
+ Yahoo search has been removed!! (for now)
+ A Bing web search now has image search in it
+ Editing a contact photo - you can now choose photos from online sources
+ Facebook events in calendar
+ Scrubbing in videos
+ Saving camera settings >_>
+ Application installation experience (from new layout to it downloading in your app list)
+ The subtle fading with the background switcher

Neutral
~ I have the same bug of the time on the lock screen fading in (its hit and miss)
~ Not sure if this is mango's fault or the fact i am using my phone a lot more but it overheats quite a bit
~ Can't seem to connect to visual voicemail (O2 UK)
~ Can't seem to find the setting that enables podcast downloading over 3G
~ Really needs a way to filter off the twitter feed into a seperate pinnable "card"
~ Have not tried putting personal ringtones on yet (looking forward to it)
~ Don't think bing scout throws up good suggestions (will give it a try when i head up to manchester later this month)

Negative
- The progress in the music is missing from the volume drop down
- Bing vision in the UK does not do books, DVDs or Barcodes
- Lack of on device encryption for Exchange servers (Still can't connect to work email!! Which is disappointing because this would make a great work phone)
- Movie search doesn't seem to work anymore in Bing
- News and Web results are now under each other in Bing search
- £rd party live tiles are still troublesome (i.e. dont work)

Have an HD7.

The battery lasts the day with normal use. It is a great phone, and if you and to choose now it would have to be the focus or the HD7S.

Not really liking the new IE interface. You need at least one more touch/click to get anywhere, unless I missed something.

Also - can you turn on automatic image loading in the mail viewer? It is going on my nerves.

I really like the Windows Phone 7 OS. It looks really slick. The HTC Surround is the only WP7 phone I know for sure works with my service provider (a few of my friends have had problems connecting their smartphones to them). One of my "friends" (I use that term lightly; he was a complete dick) who used to live around the neighbourhood had one.

I was originally trying to decide between the Samsung Galaxy SII and the HTC HD7S, but I was scared I would buy the phone and have it not work.

The HD7S looks pretty good apart from the battery life being complete shit.

Oh, and I was looking at the Focus too, but I heard there were problems with the micro SD card or something. I'm scared I'll end up buying an unlocked phone, change out the micro SD card and have it be locked again once it hard resets. 8gb is awfully small.

I can't speak to that.. I haven't tried it. I use exchange..

Short of using the hotmail connector, it doesn't sync with Outlook.. and I haven't read if that does tasks or not.
Tasks show up on my Mango phone...

Only some 3rd party tiles give me issues, for Weather Live, gReadie, Beezz, and Weather Channel the Mango update was like a magic cure to whatever stopped them from updating. However, Weatherbug, Birdsong and a couple others continue to not work.

My guess, some of them are written wrong or have bad servers. Either way the Me tile and Group Tiles eliminate a lot of my need for apps running live tiles.

Headed to an event soon. Unrelated to the original one I spoke of. I'll have to sign an NDA

So it's been two weeks and my Omnia 7 has some scratches on the screen. Not really that noticeable, but they're definitely there. I'm somewhat disappointed because it's only been in my pocket or face-up on a tabletop the entire time.

I'm not certain as to what it is for yet exactly either.

I was pretty surprised by this. The new 'Search Extensibility' API calls for support of Movie cards, so it has to be in there. Maybe it is just disabled in this build for some reason.

Went to phone shop the other day to get a case and screen protector for my Omnia 7. See the phones on display and the WP7's had on the display label "Windows 7 Phone!" with the Windows 7 logo.

lol.

And this is why calling it "Windows Phone 7" was a bad idea and "Windows Phone 7.5" won't make it better.

Birdsong is just busted. I think some of them are more on the app devs than the OS.

How long are first gen phones going to support os updates? Honestly, the Focus is the best phone I've owned.
Microsoft has a track record of supporting first gen devices for quite a while outside of the Kin.

Three questions:

1.) How can you change the profile picture of people in your contacts list? I connected it with facebook, but i´d like to change some of the avatars with real photos of these people. Possible?

2.) Is an IRC-app coming with Mango? Aka, will it be possible with Mango?

3.) Is there a good GPS-app that features realtime-tracking? For both geo caching and navigation purposes.

thx!

1. Go to the people hub, tap on the profile with the picture you want to edit, tap on the pen in the application bar (edit) and then tap on the picture. It opens the picture hub and you can select any picture that is stored on your phone.

2. There are no IRC apps out yet, but it's definitely possible with Mango. Microsoft even did a demo in April, at the MIX11 developer conference.
