but seriously, how can microsoft expect this to sell?`I see iPhone andf Galaxy S II ads all the time on tv. wp7? nada.

They need a cool "this is a fresh lifestyle product" ad that shows how beautiful it is and how well mango works.

This is troubling, and according to the T-Mobile roadmap, they only get the Radar this year. MS cant' rely on AT&T only, they need to step up their presence on every carrier.

Do they have any time table on when this update will be 100% available. This wave thing is bullshit.

Dude, just Google "force mango 7.5 update zune trick" or go back a few pages in this thread. I frickin hate having to go over the same shit over and over in this thread.

The LG LS831 just passed the FCC with US CDMA bands.

Could it be the LG Fantasy?

If you tell me what you find disappointing, I can tell you if mango will make it better. That will save you time and allow you to pre-order an iPhone next week if that's what your so intent on doing.

Just be happy that AT&T has approved the update on schedule and that in a week or two your phone will get an update notification on its own.

Microsoft decided to do a staged update so people didn't end up with bricked devices. They are being cautious after the problems they had with update number 1.

If you want it now, do the forced update technique that has been linked several times already.

Mmm. Not a big fan of LG's phones in terms of build quality and QC.

All I wanted was a HTC or Samsung phone without a hardware keyboard for Sprint.

I wasn't really joking. It is really depressing and Microsoft isn't helping with forcing developers to use XNA. Just read the MTW interview with one of the developers of Tentacles.

3) I know that many game developers see the lack of native coding on Windows Phone 7 as a major drawback. You have used the Unity engine which isn’t WP7 “compatible” to develop both Max and Tentacles. Can you give us some insight on how you managed to port the Unity scripts to XNA ? Was the lack of HLSL support in XNA for WP7 an issue?

Press Play: I think it is definitely a drawback for WP7 that it lacks support from a major game engine. XNA is a great API – but there is a lot of work in making your own engine stuff that can be prohibitive to some studios. What we decided to do was to create a small Unity engine in XNA and export all our level layouts from Unity to the XML content format supported in XNA. With that in place we could more or less reuse the scripts from Unity as they were made in C#. For Max it was more or less an experiment, and we had to do a lot of manual porting of the scripts as our “Unity” engine was not wholly similar to the original. For Tentacles we went more all in, and the FFWD engine that is powering that game has the exact same API as Unity so we can reuse the scripts from Unity more or less without modification. That helped us a lot during development. It should also be reusable enough to use in another title, if need be. Regarding the graphics, the lack of HLSL was not really an issue. The shaders used in Tentacles are not all that advanced, so we could recreate the effects we needed with the built in shaders in XNA quite easily.

4) Can you tell us more about the the Tentacles’ physics? Was this build specifically in XNA or does it use the Unity 3D Physics engine (then ported to XNA) ?

Press Play: Unity is using PhysX, which we couldn’t get for XNA. And when we begun the project, there weren’t any viable 3D physics engines for XNA at all. Since we are actually only using 2D physics, even though we are in a 3D world, we are actually using the Farseer physics engine. In Unity we have made a specific set of meshes for all models that act as 2D physics colliders when ported to XNA. When the project begun we started out using Box2D – the same engine we used for Max – but we just couldn’t get it to perform well enough. Therefore we switched engine in the late part of the project, and that helped us bump performance massively. Especially because Farseer have some tools to help us convert our meshes into polygons instead of using triangles so we greatly reduce the number of active shapes in the physics engine.

I doubt we'll ever see those Final Fantasy remakes for Windows Phone, unless Microsoft pays for it and Epic already said they wouldn't even look at the platform, unless they could code natively on it.

I've said for a while gaming wise the platform falls flat for me for a number of reasons. If I wasn't more of a portable gamer in terms of Nintendo and Sony and wanted to solely use my phone as my mobile gaming platform I'd jump ship honestly to iOS. You'd be stupid not to. I get enough games as it is to keep my satisfied as I do most of my portable gaming on my DS and soon to be Vita.

It's definitely a major knock against the platform as a whole though, and stuff like this doesn't help the momentum of WP7 at all with devs. This is sort of a semi hype killer to be quiet honest.
 
i hope samsung makes a WP version of the prime. don't really care for the upped resolution but gimme that 4.65" samoled+ curved glass.

Nexus S came out after the Galaxy line. Some of the traits are similar, but the most obvious one, the curved screen, is Nexus exclusive.

They are planning to market it. The new phones aren't out yet.

Actually it reduces reflections since you don't have what's basically a mirror anymore.




In the case of the phone being referenced, it also has a curved body which is a different discussion.
 
Trying to sell WP7 to some friends, but I would really like to direct them to some new hardware. I hope the Titam, Focus S and the Nokia phones come to Canada soon.

Keep in mind Oct 26 when Nokia announces their phones

That date is like...make or break for the WP7 platform in my opinion
 
Well since the iPhone 4S reveal was this week and it looks like the Nexus Prime reveal next week (with ICS), Nokia gets to have the final say on smartphones this holiday. Is anybody expecting them to impress beyond the other two?
 
To be honest, i just don't see the smartphone market supporting 3 OS's.

I asked earlier though, what makes windows mobile a more appealing choice than iOS and android?

Its biggest strength is that its not trying to ape iOS or Android, to be honest. Go to the Youtube Windows Phone page and take a look at the videos, good stuff on there.

Seriously. My family in majority are iPhone users. 3 of them went WP, not because of the hardware or specs or apps, but because of the OS. They saw what I could do when I was using the Mango beta. They saw how it looks (i.e. NOT boring) and how easy it is to understand and use. MS needs to spend money on advertising and hopefully the Nokia phones will generate some buzz.

I will probably use it all the time too.... hopefully it has support for controlling multiple consoles (or atleast which ever once your live id is currently signed into). I have 2 xbox's and it would suck if I could only control one of them.

also in the video anybody else notice the new branding at the bottom? zune music+video. might just be a rebranding of zune but since they did just rebrand zune pass to zune music pass it does leave a small ray of hope for a new all inclusive music+video pass.
 
How is the HTC Surrround? I know there are probably new phones coming out soon, but one of my friends is with Telus and may get a WP7.

I doubt Nokia will have anything revolutionary this year since they're still adjusting to their new strategy. They'll probably release one flagship WP7 phone for the holidays and then start to roll out more phones in the beginning of 2012.
 
I was at the grocery today and thought up an ad campaign.

Some middle aged woman with mom jeans, turtle-neck, and sweatshirt handed the cashier her iphone so she could scan her loyalty card (doesn't work with lasers). She said her son put the app on her phone. And I thought to myself, who would want to be associated with this lady?

Then I thought of my father in law who didn't know where the pictures were located on his iphone. . . .

"Windows Phone, it's not your parent's smartphone."

Use the ubiquity of the iphone against it. Much like the Mac v. PC ads.

I got my Surround basically on launch and it's still going strong despite being dropped repeatedly. The speaker isn't really worth anything but it helps to give the phone a nice weight and feeling of solidity. The battery is halfway decent, too. Enough to last me all day listening to podcasts and web browsing at work. If he's looking for a cheap WP and isn't swayed by the screen on the Focus (if you even have that phone up there) I'd certainly recommend it at the right price.
 
Iphone 4s is out, and not on tmobile. I'm either going to be switching carriers, which will cost me since I'll be off a family plan. Or getting a WP7 device. It seems like the only phone they are getting is the radar which is pretty mid level.

What else is coming out in the near future?

the radar is the only windows phone scheduled for this year. nokia may have something in 2012 but otherwise its the radar, the hd7, or the venue pro.

Regardless of if they impress or not, almost everyone in their userbase that regularly refreshes their phone has moved on to either Android, BB or iPhone. If they capture more than a fraction of their old users I'll be very surprised. They missed the boat, bigtime
