Depends on your internet connection and how much you have stored on your phone. It usually doesn't take that long, but I guess she doesn't have a clue how to do it.

Why only 50. I should be more than that.

At this point I believe the update is open to virtually everyone. People who aren't up to date with this stuff just don't really bother sometimes. On a logistical front I'm actually happy with how smoothly the roll-out happened given all of the moving pieces. Tango and Apollo will probably be even better.

If EA developed 20 games exclusive to Nokia phones I'll be disappointed. While its good that Nokia is causing people to pick up the support, it will kind of suck if they end up exclusive. Hopefully just time exclusive.

They should encourage people to buy their phones through differentiation in design, hardware, and their in house built sw. Not by locking up exclusives.

The platform needs games. There are already too many iOS exclusives, we don't need carrier exclusives as well.

I got my grandfather an Omnia 7 in late August; he isn't tech-savvy at all but he got through the update process just fine, without calling me.

I think it's just a) laziness or b) lack of self-esteem. The only thing you have to do is plug it into the PC, just like it says on the on-screen notification. That's it.

My apologies if this has been answered, but is it possible to connect windows phone to a bookshelf stereo or other home stereo system and stream music from it - or through it? I can't seem to find a definite answer to that question, and I would hope it would work the same way as with an iphone/ipod.

You can connect via 3mm audio jack just like any other potable devices. I am not sure what you mean by connecting like iPhone or iPod/pad because Apple has their own proprietary connector. If you are using dock make for iPhone or iPad then no, it won't connect via those docks.

You can pick up 3mm to RCA connector also if your home system doesn't have portable input but have regular aux RCA red and white stereo input.

Is this lenovo's first phone? I didn't know they were dabbling in the mobile space.
They joined the market in 2009, I think, but htey're only producing for the Chinese market. That's where this Windows Phone is heading, too.

I see, seems like Lenovo really hit the ground running after being bought, pretty cool.

the Lumia is getting a big marketing push here in the UK

I find it interesting that the only mention of Windows Phone is a small logo under the Nokia logo at the end.

Not advertising the Windows brand is the best thing they could do.

These better be timed exclusive. There is no reason to have games exclusive to one phone maker when the game marketplace is in need of games.

Yeah, I already have that. I want to be able to stream my music library remotely like you can with the apps they have on android or iOS. Though I haven't been able to find one for W7, or at least a good one.

There is a subsonic app.. but it's not free.

Maybe now that mango is out someone will write something for the others.

There may not be a Google music app for WP7 but cant you just use the website via your phone? I haven't ever tried, but I thought I heard there was a website you could use. That should work regardless of your phones OS.

I need a phone. Would it be stupid to go to Verizon tomorrow and get one of their Windows 7 phones, I hear something might come the 7th of November.

There are rumors of a new Verizon phone being announced soon as well as Nokia coming next year. Nothing confirmed though.

If I was on Verizon and needed a phone right now, I'd probably go with an iPhone 4S or a Galaxy Nexus. Though, you might be able to get a Trophy for damn near free

I'm a little disappointed in Beards and Beaks. The game demos very well, has an attractive presentation, and is immediately fun... but then you play it, and it's about 200% too short (there are only 30 levels, 15 free DLC levels, and 30 pay DLC levels), and it just stops working after a while. The screen gets too crammed and you end up mis-gesturing frequently in the later levels. You have god-like superpowers, but to use them you need to either wait a long period of time for them to recharge or pay real world money to recharge them instantly. The unit variety is low and there's only one strategy per level. Other than a few of the maps with interesting water hazards, the map design never really changes anything. There are relatively few game types. It's just a really, really, really shallow and short game. One of the worst demo -> full version conversion experiences I've ever had. I don't feel ripped off for $1.99, but it's just too bad that what could be a standout exclusive experience just isn't.

On the other hand, the freeware Microsoft Sudoku that's been out for 3-4 months finally came to Canada, and it's excellent. Great interface. Highly recommended.

Realize that the GPS on my phone causes a SOD, so I'm hesitant to make Android as a replacement.

I'll keep waiting for a WP7 phone.

Where did you hear about Verizon getting a new phone?

Right now I'm debating either getting a Nexus S or an Optimus 7. The Nexus S is slightly more expensive than the Optimus 7 device and I like Windows Phone 7 a bit more so far than Android. However I'm thinking most of my issues with Android could be mitigated by getting one of the flagship Android phones. Any thoughts?

The Verge put up an editorial about the history of the Sea Ray, which was a Verizon CDMA phone, before it became the Lumia 800.

Also, there was this LG Fantasy leak, which is supposed to be a 2nd gen CDMA Windows Phone.

Interesting, I doubt the Fantasy would be better than the Focus S or the Titan if it were true, so I am probably still jumping ship to AT&T.

So hey, I'm thinking about replacing my iPhone with a new handset. I've looked at a bunch and I've whittled it down to the two best looking devices:

Nokia Lumia 800
iPhone 4S

I'm very aware of the features for the 4S, since I've used a 3G for over three years now, and have an iPad that demonstrates a lot of the new iOS 4 & 5 features (besides Siri).

Basically, all I do on my phone is social networking, texting and browsing. I've never cared for games on iOS, and I doubt WP7 (even with its XBL features) will change that. The only reason I'm out to replace my 3G is because iOS 4 really slowed the device down, and the battery life isn't as good as it was when I bought it.

That, and I want a new piece of electronics, but I use other reasons to justify it to my relatives. :)

Either way, I do have a few questions about WP7:

- Have any of you switched from iOS to WP7? Was it difficult to adjust?

- How's IE? I don't use IE on my PC, but then I also don't use Safari on my Mac. However, the mobile Safari turned out pretty good, and I'm wondering if the same could be said for mobile IE.

- How many MS products/services will I be roped into with WP7? I quite like using my own non-MS (and non-Apple on my iOS devices) services where I can, so is the OS open to it? I quite like my Google Calendar, which syncs nicely with my iPhone; will I lose that? What about needing a separate app for my GMail and work-based inboxes (IMAP)? And what about setting my default search engine? Anything else in this regard not stated in the OP that I should know about?

- What about apps? Any cool ones which set WP7 apart? I know there's an app for 1Password which is handy, since I'd find WP7 to be a lame duck without it. What about Twitter and Facebook, or is the built-in functionality good enough?

I'm quite struck by the Lumia 800's look, compared to the dull phones from other manufacturers right now, and the device seems to be designed around the really nice WP7 interface too. I'd just like to know if the OS suits my needs, and I figure you guys would have a better grasp of it than me just going to some basic comparison site, since a lot of you would've used WP7 for some time now, and may have had to adjust from iOS like I potentially will be.

I'd normally ask someone I know about this, but nobody I know really has a clue about WP7. Even a friend who works in Carphone Warehouse knows sod all about it, and she recommended I get an Android (which I don't want -- I love the OS, but I've not found a single device that really catches my eye like the 4S and Lumia 800 have).

MS_Nerd explicitly said a new Verizon phone will be announced soon (while also saying there isn't anything coming up for Sprint). MS_Nerd is the source for a lot of Microsoft leaks so I'm believing him.

It's good. I don't use IE for my PC. It's fast and seems to work well. It's certainly quite a bit faster than my 2nd generation iPod Touch (which is probably the same specs as your 3G).

You just need a Windows Live account and you'll be good to go. I believe you have the option of creating one when setting up the phone. If you want to sync with the computer, you need Zune Software for the PC (or do you have mac? I believe there's syncing software for that too, although it's not Zune). I'm pretty sure Google Calendar can be integrated. You can set up a Gmail account easily, and link multiple personal e-mails, multiple work e-mails, or a combination of the two. And I think Bing is the only search engine you can use but, coming from someone who uses Google for search exclusively, I actually really like Bing on WP7. It's wonderfully integrated into the OS, and it also does things like listens to a song from the microphone and tells you what it is (like Shazam, but built-in) and a barcode scanner, among other things.

- What about apps? Any cool ones which set WP7 apart? I know there's an app for 1Password which is handy, since I'd find WP7 to be a lame duck without it. What about Twitter and Facebook, or is the built-in functionality good enough?

I don't know enough about the apps to tell you much. I'm not a huge app user, but I there's quite a bit of decent ones on there.

Social networking, texting, and browsing is mostly what I do as well, and everything on WP7 is very nicely integrated. I went from Android (granted, an older handset), and I'm loving this.

I moved from WP7 from my iPhone 3G. It's pretty easy to adjust, but you definitely need to learn how WP7 works to get the best of it (for example, most iOS users don't use the back button right away since there's no concept of going back in iOS). But honestly, after using WP7 for the past year, I _hate_ trying to use an iPhone now. It honestly just feels "old" to use now (I haven't tried iOS 5 however).

IE is great. It's very fast, has tabs, hardware acceleration, etc. It doesn't have flash support though, but since you're coming from iOS you're probably already used to that. Nothing really interesting I can add beyond that.

If you don't have a Live ID, then you'll have to make one (this is the same Live ID that's used for Xbox, Zune, and soon Windows 8). It's free of course. Other than that, you'll just need to use the Zune software.

Most of the apps allow to use your own accounts. You can link your Google account, and then you can have access to your Gmail and Google Calendar, so you won't lose anything there. The default mail app supports IMAP and Gmail as I stated earlier, so you should be able to get everything on your phone. Mango adds linked email boxes, so you can have one inbox for each account, or you can link them up and have one inbox for all of your personal email accounts and then one inbox for all of your work accounts. I used to use my Gmail account on my phone (switched to Hotmail) and it worked great. However, the mail app doesn't have the concept of "archiving" like in Gmail. To do that in WP7, you have to move the messages into the all mail folder. Not too bad, but I generally just read the emails on my phone, and then did any archiving / tagging when I was at a PC again.

However, I use a lot of their built-in services, and I have to say that it is actually a great experience. I have XBL Gold and subscribe to the $10 / month Zune Pass. The XBL games are fantastic, and I always check out the weekly XBL release. Having access to almost the entire Zune marketplace whenever you want is fantastic. Plus it has a SmartDJ mode so it basically becomes Pandora for me (with the added bonus of no ads, and you can download the songs onto your phone).

Going through the settings though, I don't believe there is a way to change the default search engine from Bing. It's pretty tightly integrated, but there's tons of cool features with Bing, and the search honestly is pretty good. I love their pictures of the day too.

If you really want to, you can ping Google.com to your home screen though, and then just use that. It may not be as nice as just hitting the Search hardware button, but it gets the job done.

Personally, I'm fine with the built-in functionality for Twitter and Facebook. It doesn't have as many features as the actual clients do (for example, there's no way to handle lists for Twitter), but since I never use that stuff, it's fine for what I do.

A really well-designed app is Cocktail Flow. It's just a drink recipe app, but you can tell it was designed with WP7 in mind. The other apps I would recommend:

- Amazon Kindle - If you're a kindle user.

- Wordament - Really fun word search game. The catch is that it's you vs everyone else playing at the same time. Everyone gets the same board and the timer starts for everyone, so it's really fun to see where you get placed with your friends.

- Alien News - Good Reddit client

There's tons more I've heard great things about, but I'm not a very app-heavy person outside of games in all honesty.

Which country do you live in btw? The Nokia Lumia 800 is only going to be in Europe initially.

Another great phone to look at is the Samsung Focus S. I have the originally Samsung Focus, and if the new one is anything like the one I got it's going to be awesome. The screen has great contrast and great colors. It's not as flashy as the Nokia phone, but since I live in the US, I just have to keep waiting patiently for Nokia to release phones here (rumored early next year I believe).

Hopefully we'll be seeing you in this thread more soon! :D

I must find a way back. I've never been this attached to a phone OS ever, as I've bounced around from BB - iPhone - Android, but christ. This is just ridiculous.

I think T-Mobile's value plan with 2gb of data for $60 a month is just that. I'm looking at getting an LG Optimus 7. It says it's unlocked on eBay, so will that support T-Mo's 2g/3g bands? I sure hope so. It's for less than $200, so I'm hoping that's a good deal. What's the general consensus around here for that model?

And does this sound fishy at all?

This item is an open box return by one of our retail customers who had it less than 14 days and it has been tested for all functionality. It may have small, minor scratches but all devices are generally in very good condition, if not like new and in most cases still have the original screen protectors on the unit. This does come with all standard accessories and the original OEM box unless otherwise noted. I do not have access to these units as they are located in a centralized warehouse so I cannot send pictures of the actual device or let you know specific condition. If you are looking for a new device, pleas do not bid. If you are looking for a more affordable, good condition, used device you may have found your auction.

And there's no returns... Kinda wary on it.

I went to verizon today and Trophys were like $150 with a 2 year plan!!!

Had a chance to play with a Focus today for a while and was wondering if there was a way to speed up the open/close/change window/etc animations? They look great but kinda bugged me after a while of using it. Reminded me of WebOS.

Also, anyone know if the Focus S will have the cheap plastic bodies that the Samsung G2 phones have? Was very disappointed with the hardware.
