I wouldn't go below 4... 4 is even pushing it.

Disagree. I have a Pro3 with 4GB and it's definitely sufficient for pretty much everything excluding running multiple virtual machines, video editing and serious gaming. Since you can't do serious gaming on it anyway and since most people are unlikely to run many virtual machines on their tablet, 4 is more than good enough. The Surface is very well optimised.

Btw to compare, I have a Thinkpad with 8GB of RAM with the same processor and even that isn't enough to run even 1 2gb virtual machine without choking.

I suspect that the 2GB version of the Surface will be just fine for most things.

Feels like an unnecessary change to me, and goes against the theme of being flat. I certainly don't believe that this will be an option to toggle either. We knew Metro is dead, but I wonder how do they even come up with these decisions nowadays. Probably just a random engineer deciding that a 3d effect would look interesting and implemented it himself.

I'm starting to find it quite funny.

Microsoft could implement a UI change that dispenses free ice cream or gave free blowjobs and people would bitch.

Any change is baaaaad.

Oh and Android looks horrible. Let me just go and buy an Android phone brb.

Even you have to admit that adding 3D elements to a design rooted in being "flat" is worth of a headscratch.

I'll wait to see it. The animation will make or break it...maybe.

what bevy of hypothetical win8/wp8 developers is he talking about?

these android rumors are coming from all over the place, not sure why. Maybe it's another Hololens situation

It's no secret that Microsoft has been working on it and that it's a last ditch effort. The question is, are we at that stage yet? Tom Warren said that they were going to announce how to make it even easier to port apps but Thurrott seem to think that they're going even further. In either case, we will know soon. Build will be interesting.

I'm not sure what Paul expects from Microsoft, stick to their guns and watch sales drop even lower?

Some of the Windows Phone hardware was/is excellent (920, 1020, 640, 930) and the OS is fast and easy to use.

If developers aren't willing to make Apps, and actively discourage third party equivalents...what can Microsoft do?

Make tools so superior to anything on the market in developing apps for iOS and Android that by default a W10 version comes out with minimal effort.

Would rather use MS OS and hardware with Android apps that Android hardware.

I don't know what hardware on MS Lumia phones that you find more compelling than Android phones. The last several phones they released or announced were all low end or mid-range crap, and worst yet they all barely indistinguishable from the previous 10 other Lumias low-end that got announced last year.

Nokia Lumia hardware was the only thing that kept me on Windows Phone for so long.

Also in the meantime Apple sold 61 millions phones all at the over inflated prices. (Microsoft lost about 12 cents per phone last quarter, which mean they were giving it away).

More so the OS. I also like the look of my 830 more than most other phones out there.

The fan boy in me makes me really not want to use Apple or Google. I'm channeling my inner Nilay Patel and not wanting to conform, lol.

Microsoft and their phone hardware is pushing me out the door kicking and screaming. I don't want to leave but I'm going to have to.

They could add Java support to Visual Studio... Except instead of compiling it to Java... They just use the language syntax to compile it to Windows Runtime which everything in Metro compiles to.

Then they would just need to find some way to deal with the Android APIs (they could wrap them around Windows ones) and we would be left with a solution where we could easily get Android apps, and they would perform as well as Windows apps written in C# or C++ because it wouldn't be emulation.

Just put this platform out of its misery and kill it if they're going to put Android apps on it. It didn't work for Blackberry and it's not going to work for WP. Why the hell are they bothering with universal apps if they're going this route?

We don't know what they're doing until tomorrow.

What would be a cool announcement would be Visual Studio for OS X. I would bet Snapchat doesn't even have a computer running Windows in their offices.
