I've generally based my decision to view something on hnnng and subject matter and the studio/director pretty much means fuck-all. For me, if Im interested in the story or ideas I will put up with subpar directing and all the other shit. If a story doesnt grab me, I dont care if its directed by god, Im not watching it.

Yep. Subject matter>direction.

I thought it was good. Its similar in style (and probably attempted to copy) the slice of life-ish Ghibli movies like Whisper of the Heart. Its pretty big on the nostalgia though so its loss on us foreigners.

Whisper IS my favourite Ghibli film, so that does bode well.

I understand the Japanese release has English subtitles, but inevitably there'll be a proper English release fairly soon so I can hold out on that.

Yuri Seijin Naoko-san

Not since the days of Nichijou had I seen something so painfully unfunny. At least that one had charming visuals and animation to fall back on whereas this is just fugly on a whole. I wish I could at least say this was a waste of perfectly fine yuri but that was sorely lacking as well. It's just an offensively dull waste of time in pretty much every way and Naoko's voice made me want to punch a wall every time she opened her mouth. So annoying.

Daily Lives of HS boys is indeed listed for only twelve eps, wow. It seems as if bonus eps will come with each dvd/br release, but that's not enough. What is this bitterness and why is it dampening my hype for next season?

Lupin isn't an especially complex IP to work with so I want to hope that she'll do a decent job with it. The other staff members have good credentials so that should help.

Subaru from Mayo Chiki :)

I thought sohnnnnnghohgod

Yep. Subject matter>direction.

Its true. Although in Tales from Earthsea's case I can see a very legitimate argument that bad directing can utterly ruin something otherwise interesting. It was sooooo boring. I really wanted to like it.

Whisper IS my favourite Ghibli film, so that does bode well.

Whisper of the Heart is the most glorious example of a japanese version of a John Denver song that I have yet to come across.

This whole post depresses the hell out of me. Even though I had expected another Gintama break, as there isn't even much manga material left to adapt, I didn't actually think it'd be that soon. :( As for DLOHB, I always equated it to a long-running shonen, for some reason (probably the Gintama comparisons). That it's not is news to me.

Sunrise already animated nearly 4 volumes out of 5 for Daily Lives of Highschool Boys so I doubt there will be a sequel. :(

Sadly not yet for the very dear prices required to get it on Ebay. I'm not sure I like it THAT much. I've never seen it after all.
I did vastly overpay for Ichigo Mashimaro though but that show will give me multiple moe-attacks so its worth the cost.

Arjuna is totally devoid of HNNNNNNNG so I understand your need to pay the bare minimum. Ultimately I felt like its spectacular badness ended up being kind of overhyped; it's a feel-bad series but didn't have me writhing on the floor like Blood-C. You shouldn't feel in any particular rush to see it.

New Prince of Tennis 10

Yes, were back to playing tennis. Pretty good match with Illusion to Waking Dream (even if they reused the same clip five times or such). I was kind of disappointed
so much build up to the pinnacle of perfection that only so few are even chosen and able to perform for it to just be, the ball rolls to a stop and reverses back like something out of hot shots golf...dull, did Echizen really do it before too in the finals? I thought itd be more epic

Three more episodes to go, hope Echizen and co get to play a full match.

Im thinking its worth $20-30. Ichigo was a well packaged art box set full of squee and joy so it as worth the extra money. Arjuna seems cute but hilariously overwrought with its message and its probably Ferngully-like levels of hitting you over the head with Nature worship.
As for Saint Tail, well I paid what was neccessary, and it wasnt a bad deal all things considered for a 40 episode series.

If those staff names are related to a title you're interested in, it's a good indicator of certain things to expect. And if you're ever curious why that particular work is so appealing to you, you may want to know who was involved in that process. It's only to your benefit.

Is Up on Poppy Hill better than Tales from Earthsea? Earthsea was so horrible my computer didnt even want to play the DVD. It displayed upside down in protest.

Its hard to compare because of different genres but yes. Earthsea was a total mess whereas Poppy Hill actually has an actual sense of direction.

Most Ghibli stuff release with English subtitles. Whether that's in preparation for the international release or what, I'm not sure.

I havent really noticed a lot of connection between different shows that I enjoyed other than genre and subject matter and perhaps cliches found in them, but I do know I enjoy a couple studio's work more than others so you might have a slight point. for the most part though, I'll watch anything if it catches my eye, whether its a Deen or Shaft show or Bones. Doesnt really matter.

But then you run the risk of becoming one of those people who feel the need to search the staff of any particular episode with a list full of names they must check in order to decide whether it's good or not without even watching it. It's a slippery slope.

For Whisper of the Heart? The UK BD is already out but it's a DNR'd mess per usual.

Nobody does this. The libel against people who care about staff needs to stop.

I dont think people are hating on studio-seekers. Just pointing out that studios really arent that important really. It just depends on how good or interesting subject matter is. If a good studio is making something boring, are you really going to watch it just because that studio did it?

Surprisingly, Arjuna spent less time hammering at the extreme environmentalism than I expected. I was a bit let down that it didn't reach deeper depths of insanity than it did, although it's still abundantly weird and uncomfortable throughout.

As bad as it sounds like you got gouged on Mashimaro, you'll still probably enjoy it far more than you would Arjuna.

You might want to edit that...

Chickdigger might be referring to a legal streaming site such as Crunchyroll.
Interwebz isn't necessarily indicative of yarrr.

But I would edit that anyway...

G Gundam 16

Gundam Spiegel and the mysterious Char-alike!
Schwarz Bruder is such a goofy name. Even if I didn't know his identity beforehand, I would have after that.

Kaiji 1

These are certainly some stylized characters. I dig the concept of the show although the game itself seems almost a letdown. I look forward to being proven wrong though.

Infinite Stratos 6

Char's just adorable. The show has become surprisingly watchable in spite of the harem antics.

Shin Mazinger Z 7

It's nice to be surprised for a change! Didn't expect that Baron Ashura reveal even though Ankojuji did strike me as a bit aggressive.

Char is veeeeeeeeery hnnnng yes. But we knew that already. Stick with it. Its really bad, but its awesome bad. Actually IMO its pretty fun overall in a stupid kind of way.

Also, Ms Britain sucks.
China is pretty rad though.

Not entirely sure how I feel right now... mostly positive though! I think it'll be interesting to see a series with Fujiko as the lead, but I'd be lying if I'm not a little disappointed it isn't Lupin in the centre of that poster. The style looks pretty awesome, but I'm hoping that's just for the promo poster and we'll get the Pachinko style animation in the actual series (because dat Zenigata face god damn.) It also looks like Lupin has a blue jacket? If those colours are anything more than just an eye catch for the poster, that is.

Can't wait for April, anyway. Hopefully the bold style and new lead will help the series reach out to fans of modern anime. It'd be even better still if they then go back and enjoy the old series. Got my fingers crossed for Yuji Ohno, too.

Sigh... I know nothing of this Mari Okada but I love this franchise more than any normal person should. Should I be worried and if so, what should I be worried about?

Kaiji takes a bit to get going, but when it does, it doesn't let up. Turns into a massive "just 1 more episode" show by the 2nd arc.

She's a prolific writer currently in charge of the writing for the very popular Black Rock Shooter TV anime.

@Bold: Laughed my ass off, son. But yeah, Zenigata is...god damn.

You're right about BRS. the HNNNG potential seems ENORMOUS.
Even if it is horribly written. But I'll decide that for myself anyway.

I'm hoping whoever writes this doesn't end up sucking all of the humour out of Lupin. Even in the original manga's there was a good deal of slapstick and OTT sillyness. Creating a daring and edgy take on the franchise is great, but it wouldn't be Lupin without the laughs. I'm assuming she's in charge of writing this as well, then? :X

Also, if people aren't aware of it, Yamamoto has worked with Koike previously:
Sayo Yamamoto was most responsible for the storyboading (and presumably some of the original background art since she’s credited with that too) for the scenes in the Oasis Restaurant.

It actually sounds like the polar opposite of Castle of Cagliostro Lupin. 'Character focused', 'sensual', 'daring.' And that Koike:

so good.
