I believe it basically means she's the head writer, though obviously the director can have a lot of input as well.

That's why I was confused. If she does have a lot of power though then....=\

edit: In all honesty, I'm probably just being melodramatic here (oh the irony in that statement). I'm sure it will be fine.

I'll watch the hard sci fi show, the Sengoku hnnng, the upotte! hnnng, HyouKON, and maybe the sunrise schoolgirl show if it isnt boring as fuck. Maybe apollon once I read some impressions of it. Not a whole lot of what I need this season. Well Tsuritama looks interesting too.

And AKB 48. Shit I forgot about that.

It will be guaranteed to be glorious.

whether that means glorious failure or success is up for future debate

Maybe it won't be all that bad, guys. I haven't watched it yet but you guys love Wandering Son.
It's really silly to avoid watching a show with KOIKE and YAMAMOTO + making a show on a excellent IP just because Mari okada is writing it.

It's only a problem if the director doesn't control her output. Even Kawamori hasn't let her gone wild in Aquarion Evol.

Generally speaking, Okada's scripts are fine when she's doing fairly straightforward adaptations. I mean, they're usually as good as whatever the source material was. It seems as if the more creative input she has in a script, the worse it is. It's a miracle Hanasaku Iroha was as good as it was.

Master Keaton 3-5

Is it bad the first place my mind goes is "lol, pedo" when Keaton dances with the little girl? This medium has ruined me.

Adult classes seem a lot more laid back than normal classes if episode 5 is to be believed. Might just be how college and up works in France though. I expect these guys to know their stuff, so they've probably already researched that kind of thing.

I've already posted a list of what I intend to watch next season, but I haven't actually elaborated on why I want to watch them. Let me rectify that.

Hyped for:

Sakamichi no Apollon - Watanabe. Kanno. Jazz. Josei. Pump it into my veins already.

Space Bros. - I've heard amazing things about the manga, and the story is quite unique for anime. Moreover, it's going to be at least 48 episodes, which should allow it to do justice to the source material, and I have faith in the other Watanabe and A-1 to keep it on track. Based on the PV, it should look good.

Saint Seiya Omega - I couldn't care less about the Saint Seiya franchise, but Umakoshi is going to make this look beautiful.

Hyouka - KyoAni production values already justify watching this. If we can get some genuine mysteries in addition to the school slice-of-life stuff, I'll be a happy man.

Fate/Zero Part 2 - The best director of 2011 returns! The first part kept getting better and better, so I can only hope the upward trend will continue. Certainly couldn't miss out on my good man Rider.

Lupin III - A fantastic visual style is assured and I am hopeful that Okada's negative influence will be minimized.

Interested in:

Ozuma - Frankly I'm still not sure why I should be hyped about Leiji Matsumoto, but the sci-fi premise is appealing.

Tsuritama - I'm skeptical after C, but at least this show will have pleasant visual design with a good studio behind it. Kenji Nakamura's earlier works merit me giving him another chance at any rate.

Ginga e Kickoff!! - I'm up for a realistic take on soccer, and the novel seems well-respected. The director has done solid work.

Tasogare Otome X Amnesia - Yeah, Silver Link and all, but if the manga is as good as people say hopefully they can make an at least competent adaptation. The PV looks OK.

Jormungand - Will the source material be strong enough to overcome the weaknesses of the director and studio? Time will tell.

Natsuiro no Kiseki - Besides my general fondness for relaxed summer slice-of-life shows, there have been hints at a "miraculous" direction that could make this a riot.

Zetman - 13 episodes seems like it'll be too short, but it could still turn out to be a fun action watch.

Nazo no Kanojo X - The other Watanabe's other show. Some other good staff involved and a manga with good word-of-mouth.

Shirokuma Cafe - With the director of Chi's Sweet Home and strong VAs in Kamiya and Fukuyama, this could be fun. The season is lacking in other interesting comedies, especially since Gintama's probably going on hiatus again.

No way:

Eureka Seven AO - Just because they bring back a beloved show from several years ago doesn't mean Bones is suddenly going to become a great studio again. There'll probably be some good 2D animation, but everything else is going to be terrible.

AKB0048 - It won't trainwreck hard enough to be worth watching.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Quick rundown.

Anime:

Ozuma: Boy meets coordinator, pass.

Saint Seiya Omega: Never watched the original, pass.

Uchuu Kyoudai: Not Planetes, pass.

Shinba Inuko-San: Kafkaesque high school comedy about a dog, pass.

Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth: I like the manga but it is so god damn stupid, pass.

Gingo e Kickoff!: Kids playing soccor, pass.

Gakkatsu!: No description but based off the art I'm guessing gag comedy, pass.

Arashi no Yoru Ni: Kid's show about talking animals, pass.

Sengoku Collection: Sword Art Online the anime is coming eventually so this is completely unecessary, pass.

Jewelpet Kira Deko: The MLP of Japan I assume, pass.

Pretty Rhythm Dear My Future: Not the Pingudrum song, pass.

Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water: Never watched the original so I might check this out.

Upotte!!: Anthropomorphized guns, I would like to see Manos' reaction to this, pass.

Kuroko no Yaoibait: Yaoibait is yaoi, pass.

Kikansha Thomas: What the all mighty fuck is Thomas doing here? Pass.

Cardfight!! Vangaurd Second Series: The second season of a show no one cares about. Pass.

Phi Brain: God of Puzzle: The other YGO clone no one cares about. Pass.

Eureka Seven AO: Never watched the original, will it have Shounen Heart? Pass.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia: I don't know how to feel about this, pass.

Hyouka: I thought it was K-ON at first. Then I saw "Kyoto Animation". Yep, looks like they've lost the ability to draw anything else. Pass.

FSN: Herp derp FSN. Pass.

Kore wa Zombie desu ka? OF THE DEAD: I actually wanted to watch the original but never got around to it, pass until I watch the first season.

Jormugand: Nice designs, sucker for Nordic references, White Fox not sure if want. Pass.

Shining Hearts ~Shiawase no Pan~: T2 still illustrating Shining I see. Pass.

Acchi Kocchi: Dat ahoge, will consider.

Sankarea: Deen and necrophilia moe. Pass.

Natusiro no Kiseki: Sunrise trying to hop on the K-ON bandwagon. Except they replaced Yui with Yuki. Can work, still passing.

Haiyore! Kyaruko-san: The art rings alarm bells with me. Oh wait this is that Moethulhu thing. Will try one episode.

Medaka Box: The only way I will watch this is if they do a Nisio Isin level troll and just skip to the arc with Kumagawa being awesome.

Kimi to Boku: Bro-ON returns. Pass.

Train Hero: Uuuuh, Canadian artist, Chinese studio, transforming trains. Wat?

Hiiro no Kakera: Generic reverse harem. Pass.

Zetman: Some shounen shit or whatever, pass.

Sakamichi no Apollon: Not Bebop, nor will it save anime. Watching anyway for the delicious bromance potential.

Tsuritama: Sci-fi fishing bromance. Will try.

Yurumates: Not Maison Ikkoku, pass.

Beyblade Zero G: Beyblade.

Accel World: I'm not sure how to feel about this. Might give it a shot.

Mysterious Girlfriend X: YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES ALL OVER MY FACE YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.

Shirokuma Cafe: Furry gag anime. Pass.

Saki: Achiga-hen episode of Side-A: Is this a sequel to that moe mahjong anime? Pass.

AKB0048: No.

Queen's Blade Rebellion: Will look forward to the porn.

Koi-ken!: Dating sim nongame turned phone anime. Pass.

Notable OVA/OAD/Special:

Fate Zero (Extra): Isn't this the PSP game?

A Town Where You Rage: I wonder if Mangaf will watch this.

Kenshin (Anime Kenshin, not Tsuiokuhen Kenshin):

Lupin Ikka Seizoroi: Lupin.

Mirai Nikki: Yuno.

Thermae Romae: Naked men everywhere.

Gundamu Unicorn: Banagher being a mouthbreathing moron.

Notable Movies:

Strike Witches: Pantsu.

The sound of 7th fapping furiously: Nothing more needs to be said.

Niji-Iro Hotaru ~Eien no Natsu Yasumi~: Looks super :firehawk.

TL;DR

Anime is dead.

Pretty much my exact list except I will be checking out AKB48 and AO. Oh and Ozuma would be in the hyped column. Also might look into one of the train related anime for a laugh.

Shirokuma Cafe will be my darkhorse I think, neat premise that could make for a pretty funny show.

The ANN article has been updated with some more info about the focus of the new Lupin show:

The series revolves around the character of Fujiko Mine, depicting her and the rest of the Lupin III cast during their younger days. The series will reportedly capture the "sensuality" present in Monkey Punch's original Lupin III manga in its "daring interpretation" of the franchise.

As much as I like Miyazaki's take on the franchise, the thing that most disappointed me about it was how tamed Fujiko became, to the point where she was uninteresting as a character. Going back to Monkey Punch's original tone sounds like a very exciting direction to take, and should mesh perfectly with Koike's aesthetic sensibilities.

But I'm pretty sure AnoHana mainly sucks because of the director, Lupin the third is going be fine in that case.

After watching Ano Natsu, I can't agree.

Subete no aware
The original Fullmetal Alchemist has taught me that anime writers don't necessarily need to be bound by anything.
That's fine. How many shows *now* do that though?
I think most companies are probably afraid of creating "divergent" texts now, unless it's weird visual novel spinoffs where you can apparently knock up every girl in the text (BokuTomo/Hanagai :p).

Lupin Yessss

Okada Whyyyy

I'd like GAF's input on whether Darker than Black is worth watching (I remember disliking the first episode or two way back when, but I dismissed it for something fairly stupid IIRC)

The first season is never completely unenjoyable. Avoid the second season at all costs.

cwarrior also hates The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, so take that into consideration.

This makes me sad.
I bet he took her pudding too.

also, BRS is definitely on my watch list for the hnnng.
However it has to share time with Chihayafuru and ano Natsu
And those have to compete with Code Geass R2.
Decisions....

Fate/Zero Part 2 - The best director of 2011 returns! The first part kept getting better and better, so I can only hope the upward trend will continue. Certainly couldn't miss out on my good man Rider.

Rider's good, I hope we see his noble phantasm and lightning chariots again, no more "talking" episodes I pray, action., though guess Im alone with Waver and Ryuunosuke.

My guaranteed watch lists consists of:

Apollon. ( Watanabe=jesus, and I'm a devote disciple)
Tsuritama (Nakamura did C, but he also did Mononoke)
Jormungand (Bullets. Bullets. Koko)
Lupin ('daring interpretation' at that? Wha? You can't sign me up fast enough)
Saint Seya (I'll be new to this, but it does look interesting)
Gintama (con't.)
Daily Lives of HS Boys (con't.)

Everything aside from AKB48 I'll give an ep or two before dropping it, in all likeliness. AKB48 isn't even getting an ep,
or a mention in the OP, hehehehe. kidding.

Gintama (con't.)
Daily Lives of HS Boys (con't.)

Another show (Gon, some CG co-production with Korea) is taking Gintama's time slot in April, so I'm expecting it to take another break. And why would you think Daily Lives is continuing? Everything I've seen says it's only 12 episodes.

This whole post depresses the hell out of me. Even though I had expected another Gintama break, as there isn't even much manga material left to adapt, I didn't actually think it'd be that soon. :( As for DLOHB, I always equated it to a long-running shonen, for some reason (probably the Gintama comparisons). That it's not is news to me.

I've generally based my decision to view something on hnnng and subject matter and the studio/director pretty much means fuck-all. For me, if Im interested in the story or ideas I will put up with subpar directing and all the other shit. If a story doesnt grab me, I dont care if its directed by god, Im not watching it.

zeroshiki, you saw this in the cinema didn't you? Was it okay? I don't hate Earthsea as much as most people do (its main crime is being a bit dull, really) so I'm tentatively excited for the eventual English language release of this.

I thought it was good. Its similar in style (and probably attempted to copy) the slice of life-ish Ghibli movies like Whisper of the Heart. Its pretty big on the nostalgia though so its loss on us foreigners.

J. C. Staff really should taken the first 5 seconds of Ano Natsu's OP and used it for the rest of the OP. That film reel aesthetic of the entire cast would have been great.

Is Up on Poppy Hill better than Tales from Earthsea? Earthsea was so horrible my computer didnt even want to play the DVD. It displayed upside down in protest.

Lupin isn't an especially complex IP to work with so I want to hope that she'll do a decent job with it. The other staff members have good credentials so that should help.

Is that Subie-chan in your avatar?

Subaru from Mayo Chiki :)

The first season is never completely unenjoyable. Avoid the second season at all costs.

Sounds good!
