Kind of interesting that the student council guys get so much attention. Originally I would have thought they were minor characters, but their bits come about as often as the main 3 guys now. It helps keep up the variety of the comedy though that's for sure.

Papa no whatever 6

Its kind of odd that there's a bunch of otaku pandering in this show, yet at the same time there is a character specifically designed to make fun of the stereotypical otaku. This episode taught me to watch out for strangers who might accost you with bananas.

They are better than the main characters.

Does this mean you've never encountered sarcasm or satire in writing before and that all of your posts up until today have been 100% straight-faced serious?

Satire is often done poorly, his segment about Azumanga Daioh clearly illustrates that he has difficulties writing cleverly about such matters.

When I want to express my sincere opinion about a work I will forgo sarcasm to ensure that my point is clearly understood because I imagine that if I drop a few sarcastic remarks here and then my point will probably get misconstrued. Actually, I know that for certain because it's happened several times already.

I understand that my prose is too poor for the casual reader of this thread to deduce the intent of my point when I'm being overly sarcastic. What I'm trying to say is, I'm sorry cosmic :(

See, this is why if one goes the troll route they have to go all in and then back off completely when prompted. Leave the thought-provoking subtle satire to those who are actually skilled at it!

Jexhius, I was being very sincere (post title included) with that remark, only trying to express myself for PdotMichael that all of us here can help equally and because of that there is no reason to disqualify on that matter the community as a whole. The "mission" I was talking about is that of saying our recommendations freely if we really want to, and said it to PdotMichael because I had the impression he wasn't convinced of that, but now I see that he simply doesn't likes the idea of recommendations. No sarcasm involved.
Ah, but I was agreeing with you completely. My comment was aimed at PdotMichael, I just quoted you to show my support.

See what I mean about no-one understanding me?

If you're seeing something wrong there then you are the pervert.
eiken has made it impossible for me to look at a banana the same way ever again. i've seen some shit

It was great. They walked into the town, was like "Everyone loves Hina-chan" and then this dude comes out of fucking nowhere, "Here, have a banana!" and shoves it in her face.

Madoka, tying your hair up like that is ugly, stop doing it. Please.

Oh... ugh! Sorry, man. Can I still use as a excuse my poor understanding of the English language? Yeah, it was that...

I would disagree actually. And I quote:

This isn't a requirement (although it should be but that's another discussion). It's just less offensive if they were more personable, but the fanservice is still equally offensive regardless. For example, there's vulgar, lazy fanservice like High School DxD, semi-classy Rinne no Lagrange fanservice and holy fanservice Inu x Boku.

Oh, sure, I can agree that the nature of fanservice never changes regardless of the quality of the character or show. I think I was speaking more to service being easier to overlook when handled classily or negated by great characterization, not that different types of fanservice are inherently less fanservicey just because they exist alongside class.

I hope this makes sense.

I think it's because she looks cross-eyed, but holy ugly art Batman.

Are there two Azumanga Daiohs? One that's a slice of life comedy and one that's racist hate fest?

Reading his statement on Oshii I thought about an alternative version of Angel's Egg in which a basset hound hatches from the Egg and starts barking : "Woofer she lost her innocence or her faith is ambiguous."
But there isn't, there is no such thing.
I searched through his posts and his dislike for Oshii seems un-"ironic", although I might just not get it.

Otherwise 8/10 would rage again.

What actually bothers you about the show? Do you find it to be un-funny, or does something else bother you?

I think it's a very unfunny show (funniest parts usually involving the creepy Kimura and Yukari/Minamo bouts).

The hunky-dory music stood out so terribly for me. One could argue it fits the light-hearted tone of the series, but I thought it was just bad.

The fence cat scenes.....THE FENCE CAT scenes! I'll admit, I chuckled the first time, but...THE FEEEN-- you get the point.

The main characters are quite dull, but in fairness, in Nichijou (my favorite comedy/slice-of-life ever) the mains are also blanket stereotypes. I've heard many compare the two series, but besides the character sets (Mai = Sakaki, Yukko = Tomo, Mai = Koyomi). I don't see it.

It seems well decided amongst anime fans as the mother of comedy-of-life and I can respect that to a degree, it added (strangely placed) surreal elements and wacky reaction faces. But in the end, I just think it's a terrible show.

I think we've figured out the problem here.

Azumanga really was the mother of "comedy-of-life", though, at least to many Westerners. While I can't say for certain, aside from Sazae-san it's one of the first yonkoma adaptations that any Western anime fan would be familiar with. It also aired only a few years into the digital fansub revolution and was completely different from most stuff out there.

I personally don't care for it much myself but I think it's easy to see why it had such an impact.

duckroll I expected, but the rest of you? For shame. School Days is quality Shakespearean style shit. Absolutely brilliant. How could you NOT like it. You all have no taste.

Bro?

Bahahhaha. Literally laughed out loud.

Restraining myself from checking the episode out for this scene.

Must.....hold.....onto....remaining....dignity!

Good thing Nichijou is free of unfunny skits, repetitive skits, and stereotype characters.

I like it almost as much as Azumanga

Nah, it's not your fault. I should have clarified by saying something along the lines of - "I agree completely" etc.

Oh Nichijou haet, how I will never understand you.

Edit:

1. Neeeever said it was free of unfunny skits.
2. If there was one repetitive skit that ran half as long as cat-on-fence-please-dun-biet-me that I missed, I will do a funny dance...while standing on a cat,
Chiyo's father
3. Already stated it has stereotyped characters

Yeah, I understood your point, but I disagreed with your idea that fanservice can somehow be negated or offset. It's just less offensive to you if you have great characterization with it. I'm just saying they don't somehow cancel each other out unless it's requirement of yours that makes it so. It's easier to overlook because of it, yes and no, but that's another discussion.

Well, if you don't find a comedy funny I can understand why you don't like it. It's also a very cheaply produced show in a number of places so there's certainly no reason to watch the show if you're looking for interesting direction/animation or anything like that. At the very least (and sometimes it only achieves the very least) Nichijou is a pleasure for the eyes.

It's really not all THAT random. The local grocer gives the 3yo a free banana because she's adorable or something and then starts putting a bag together of other free fruit. It's not like some random guys in a suit walks up and says "Here, have banana", jams it in her face, and then walks on. THAT would be hilarious.

The first person that doesn't want to shoot me in the forehead for enjoying Nichijou. Thank you, Based Geese Howard.

Okay, I think we're totally clear now. You're certainly correct and I believe I had intended to imply that fanservice has less of an impact on my critical appraisal of a show when balanced out with positive critical qualities, not that it is actually "negated", no longer exists, or is suddenly above criticism because it exists alongside good characterization. I should have elaborated my argument better.

And now that that's out of the way, I can continue to have a non-opinion on Nichijou as I've still never watched past the first episode.
