K-ON!/!! is better than the Azumanga for the virtue of having better animation, direction, art etc.

Haha, generic JRPG re-enactment while walking with friends. I think I know where the general theme of this series is going and it's pretty charming.

Guy friends doing guy things and talking about guy stuff (besides skirt-wearing, I missed that part of high school >_>).

Slice of life anime is boring. I much prefer slice off lives anime.

well, sword of the stranger was the last great thing bones made.

Speaking of Bones disappointments, it's come to my attention that Towa no Quon will show in its entirety on WOWOW in a couple of days time.

I didn't make it past the first episode, I don't know if it's even worth trying to watch the rest.

Super Robot Wars OG The Inspector 17

Another heavy action episode where everything that can go wrong does go wrong.
I knew the Alteisen was going to eat it before long but I was expecting Soulgain vs Alteisen rather than Ashsaber vs Alteisen. Surprisingly satisfying nonetheless.

The Valsione remains aesthetically out of place in the OG series.

Not like this, Kuro and Shiro. Not like this.

Well, the chart posted regarding episode progression is spot on so far. Onishi's the only sane man and while Yoshii's goals seem clearer, his motivation still eludes me. The show has a crazy fixation on Ichise's eyes too.

Why is this? I assume this (and the ongoing usage of first person shots) are to imply some sort of intimacy between the viewer and Ichise but I'm not for certain.

Melody of Oblivion 13

Bocca is trapped on a bus and he's directed to the emergency exit. While a normal person would use the handle, he takes the time to draw an arrow, shoot the handle off the damn door, then shoulder charge through it. Come on.

Yes, a guy is driving a jeep with legs. Why? I don't want to know.

For whatever reason this episode has a bit of action better animated than every previous bit of action combined. (4.5 MB gif) Everything about this show is so uneven.

Planetes 3:
Just to jog your memories this is the episode where
they find a coffin in space and Tanabe decide to reenact Ender in Speaker for the Dead.

BAAAAAAAAAAAARF.

Ugh, that was horrible.

Eureka Seven 8-10

Yeah, tell her she hasn't changed from the time she was a
mass murderer.
That will really win her over, Renton.

Satire is often done poorly, his segment about Azumanga Daioh clearly illustrates that he has difficulties writing cleverly about such matters.

When I want to express my sincere opinion about a work I will forgo sarcasm to ensure that my point is clearly understood because I imagine that if I drop a few sarcastic remarks here and then my point will probably get misconstrued. Actually, I know that for certain because it's happened several times already.

I understand that my prose is too poor for the casual reader of this thread to deduce the intent of my point when I'm being overly sarcastic. What I'm trying to say is, I'm sorry cosmic :(

Whoa, don't be editing yourself for me. Your prose is fine. I'm just dumb.

I've been craving anime lately (I haven't watched any in years), but I'm overwhelmed with choice. Can anyone supply me with recommendations based on this brief list of what I can remember enjoying over the years? Here it is:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Fullmetal Alchemist
FLCL

I've recently started watching Gurren Lagann (as I've liked Gainax's work in the past) and I'm not terribly impressed, though I'm only a few episodes in.

edit: Or to put it simply, what are the "seminal" works of the past ten years or so?

GL gets good after like episode 4. As a Gainax fan, stick with it.

Branduil's suggestions are mostly good, but I have to implore you to watch Michiko to Hatchin. If I don't, kittens will die.

What a coincidence Nichijou picks up in the second half... then goes back to more misses than hits.

Well hopefully not the entire first half is skipped, there's quite a few gems in there, particularly near the end of the first half. I would say the show was at its peak from around episode 7-18 or so.

Oh, it wasn't that bad, though that content was probably handled better in the manga. Are you watching it subbed or dubbed?

Ok, I will fess up and tell you i've not seen this.

I will strive to remedy this problem as soon as humanly possible because this just looks amazing!
be sure to watch the four 1-minute shorts as they take the messed up nature of the show to a whole new level

Ep1 - Good action, scenario is not outstanding, character designs suck.
Ep2 - What happened to the good action? Why is the writing even worse? Wow these designs really suck!
Ep3 - Flashback scene was kinda cool, this show is boring.
Ep4 - I forgot what it was about.
Ep5 - I also forgot.
Ep6 - Action's pretty cool, no one gives a fuck about the story or characters anymore, wow the character designs and art direction for this show REALLY sucks!

What's even more boring is Electric Countermeasures.

And don't even get me started on Electric Counter Countermeasures.

Planetes 5:
This show tries so hard to drive me away.

You might just want to ditch the anime and read the manga instead. The manga is only four volumes long, so the anime has a lot of filler. I personally liked most of it, but you don't seem to be enjoying it.
