Winter 2012 Anime Thread 2.22: You Can (Not) Outpost Cajunator

I'm glad you were able to enjoy this series. Its one of the few that was sold as EIGHT volumes, like Kiddy Grade. Yes at one time companies were fleecing us with 8 discs instead of 6 or 7. And I bought it. I regret nothing >_>
The tin box the series is stored in is a really nice touch too.

The tin box was the "shut up and take my money" feature for me, really. That and the fact it was directed by Tatsuo Sato (or "that guy who did Nadesico").

From what I've seen so far it's a really good show and I'd highly recommend it to anyone here. Except possibly Jexhius, it's not masochistically bad enough for his tastes.

When in the world did Jexhius acquire that kind of reputation?

Good, the mail arrived; now I don't have to worry about it since I'll be gone for like 4 days.

The box is pretty nice and has an interesting texture that I wasn't expecting. Basically tiny diagonal grooves over the whole thing. Does that make it worth $400? No, probably not. It's clearly a different sort of thing from the boxes you would get with a typical R1 release, though.

There's also not really anywhere to put the translated booklet, everything fits in the box pretty snugly already. It would be nice if I didn't have to stick the booklet on the shelf next to the box.

Niceeee. I'm super jelly but good stuff on the pickup...

I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT

Yeah I kind of saw the box with the first disc and was like...hmmm..cute show in space, Nadesico guy, hnnng characters, pretty blue tin box- SOLD

Then I realized it fit 8 volumes and I was like ;_;
Angela's music in the series is stellar. Really really good stuff.
If youd like a copy of it, two of the songs can be found on this CD:

What!? My Stellvia discs didn't come with a box!
Of coure I did buy them years later on clearance...

It was a special edition release of the first volume--first disc, tin box, four double-disc thinpaks to hold the rest of the series. You then bought the rest of the regular releases and transferred the discs from the 'normal' cases to the thinkpak ones.

Sort of a unique space-saving solution as far as anime releases went, but a ton of wasted packaging.

(And the 8 Volume DVD releaeses--BA:V, Escaflowne, Evangelion DVD version 1--got nothing on the glory days of VHS. Want Evangelion? 13 volumes!)

Awesome, I'll be picking this up for sure. The music in general has been top drawer, but the songs in particular.

Anime >>>> Games = Anime CD's >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Food, water, rent, presents for loved ones. Life is good.

EDIT: Wait what? I don't remember Evangelion being on 13 volumes of VHS. That's horrific.

Esca was 8, parallel to the DVD release (I think? If it even got a VHS? I don't remember actually), but Eva was 13. Ranma 1/2, if I remember right, was also 2 episodes a tape which was even worse given the length of the series.

Even the DVD set of Ranma is gigantic. Luckily a fellow Gaffer just made acquiring the entire collection a LOT easier.

Wow. Somebody's taking baths in Ranma 1/2 VHS tapes every night feeling very angry and possibly vengeful.

Glad I skipped the VHS era (aside from a few Yu Yu Hakusho tapes and assorted movies)

Yeah. Now I don't doubt that they are going finish this on the 'cour'.
Yup... I think one more episode wouldn't have hurt, here. Kaiki and Kagenui's scenes were pretty damn short (even if, yes, it's just people talking... nothing new, there, really!).

(I wonder about their plans for the following books, now that they've adapted one of them in merely four episodes.)

Next week...
the return of Kiss-Shot!
A version we haven't seen yet, too!

Sailor Moon 7

Everyone gets brainwashed (again!) and wants to become a star. I must say, my favorite pair was the policeman and his buddy....

No one was impressed by Umino's performance, though.

Listening to Usagi and Naru sing the OP was great, even if
the result was somewhat excruciating.

Anyway, next episode, this mysterious character appears! I wonder who she could be!

Very interesting observations! How would you say this episode compares to episode 7 of Ultimate Girl? I mean on a thematical and symbolic level?

This very article explains why you got what you deserve.

Yep pretty much.
Most of my U.S. discs are from clearance sales.
It really wasn't until Blu-ray happened that I got excited about video and started drinking the kool-aid and buying Japanese releases at $400/12 episodes.
Also internet streaming allowing me to preview stuff and become a fan of it before the Japanese release is out, rather than blind-buying U.S. releases years later.

Those Fujioshi must really love this franchise.

Can we add this one to the list that includes people who spell yaoi yoai? :p

I guess because I've never watched any Inazuma Eleven I had no idea it was a fangirl fave. Then again, non-ugly character designs + team bonding usually leads to fangirls - witness OoFuri, for instance.

I actually watched some anime today. It was only Ano Natsu episode 1, which was much better than I thought it would be, but still... must every plot and relationship development be signposted by the first episode of a romantic comedy like this? You immediately know who likes who and the plot developments are incredibly predictable because of the whole premise of the show. Is it too much to ask for to have at least a modicum of suspense in an anime romance these days?

I would encourage you to keep watching, Ano Natsu is quite aware of the standard cliches of anime romcoms, and and even if it doesn't mix up the formula too much, it still feels fresh.

Speaking of which....

Ultimate Girls 8

Naked crotchless lolis, yuri, and a buddha monster.

Vivienne is the best character in this thing.

I like Vivienne too.
Silk is kind of boring and loligirl is...scary.
Well the whole show is scary in general. But AWESOME.
Don't you think?
