Kaiji 9

Figured Kaiji would do that, didn't expect what came after though. Show is seriously so good.

Mazinger Z 12

Ashura's fixation on cute things is so great as was that Pilder test flight.

G Gundam 22

Uneven episode as the best action takes place in the first few seconds and ends shortly thereafter. The new Shuffle Alliance is buying time for the Shining Gundam to be repaired but while they can be neat characters and were great foilsto Domon, they feel pretty weak as a supporting cast especially as the show seems to be focusing more and more on the growing relationship between Rain and Domon. The voiced battle theme during the main fighting was kinda neat but didn't really enhance the mood.

Yuri Seijin Naoko-san

Gave the six minute short a try as I wasn't entirely sold on the concept. I was pleasantly surprised at how amusing and well done everything was. The train gag in particular had me laughing. The 30 minute oav might wear thin on me but I should give it a shot sometime too.

Sailor Moon 25

This show deserves credit for how they keep the monster of the week formula reasonably fresh by switching up the Dark Kingdom's minion's plans. This isn't really the appeal of the show compared to the character interaction both off- and on-duty but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Case in point:

I didn't expect Jupiter to be so... big either.
Or quite the proficient fighter. Her actually connecting with Zoisite and him being so hands-on so far really surprised me.

Sailor Moon 26

Dick move to make me relive Nephrite's death like that. :( Same for Umino's behavior at Naru's. She keeps getting shit on again and again.
I've been onboard with the youma design this entire time but yeah, Boxy is pushing it. Straightforward ep that just went fullbore into crazytown especially with the priest levelling up. what the hell

Sailor Moon 27

Almost missed the redone OP but ended up watching it more than a few times. Seriously impressive and reminded me so much of Utena's OP that I ended up watching Utena's a few times for good measure. Tuxedo Mask was as useless as ever this time around but the balance with the Rainbow Crystal distribution was a bit unexpected. Leave it to Usagi to pick the most flattering picture to give out.

Sailor Moon 28

Usagi's careless with the Moon Stick? Throw it on the concrete at her feet, Luna. That's makes perfect sense. Ending elevated the episode after
Tuxedo Mask refused the amulet
. Loved the youma too. Probably the most interesting power demonstrated so far.

Sailor Moon 29

Episode felt a little weaker albeit silly as hell. Humor picked up towards the end with the Sailor Moon/Jupiter speech. I'm hoping I get a satisfying conclusion to the Zoisite/Tuxedo Mask grudge that's brewing.

Sailor Moon 30

That's a flip a table worthy opening.
I knew someone close was going to get attacked by Zoisite but never expected Rei's grandfather.
Beginning to doubt Usagi ever uses that pen for its intended purpose. Nice names for the crows too. No idea if I missed that earlier in the series.

Sailor Moon 31

Just sayin' but the opening sequence of this episode might be one of the best in the series. Hell, the episode itself is one of the best. Zoisite vs the
sewer
was pure comedy. I should go through the Ikuhara episodes but it strikes me Luna was handled with more care when he directed.

Sailor Moon 32

Huh, I think Tuxedo Umino Mask is more useful than the real thing. I'd have punched my monitor if Zoisite had followed up on his plan. Poor Naru. That was probably one of the Usagi's better bullshit speeches too.

Sailor Moon 33

Artemis sighting. Didn't think it'd take this long either but I suppose Sailor V has had a presence in the show up until now albeit in a passive manner. I'll be damned too. Usagi is finally showing some leadership. All in all, a great episode. Satisfying to see Kunzite demonstrate his ability and to get some more of that awesome Tuxedo Mask vs Zoisite action.

Oh god what happened to Makoto

Sailor Moon 34

Mamoru's an idiot but a noble idiot. Fucking Zoisite. This episode had such an awesome end despite the Dark Kingdom shenanigans though.

Sailor Moon 35

FUck me. Endymion and Serenity reunited at last and Kunzite kidnaps him? Fuck him. It was great to see Zoisite humbled properly but I didn't expect Beryl to blow him away like that or for Kunzite to finish the job at Zoisite's request. I mean I figured it'd happen but assumed it'd be a betrayal on Kunzite's behalf. I swear if Endymion is revived to fight against Serenity I'll be quite upset! Usagi hit her breaking point sadly but it struck me as more maturation than anything as she's finally taking everything seriously.

Still watchin' anime. Apart from new stuff I'm working through Round Vernier Vifam and Heavy Metal L-Gaim.

Some interesting comments about Chihayafuru.

According to Asahi newspaper, anime critic Fujitsu Ryota reported the policy of Nihon TV, which aired Chihayafuru. The quality of the anime was decent and it could have attracted audience in a wide range of generations if it had been aired in the evening. However, no company sponsored the program (i.e. the anime producers purchased the time slot) and the DVD sales were unsuccessful. There is a discrepancy between the purchaser of the DVD/Blu-ray disc media and the general TV viewers, which mainly contribute to the ratings. Nihon TV supports unprofitable anime such as Chihayafuru of their own volition.

NTV, what a boss.

Oh right, I was going to get around to this.

Usagi Drop 11 - END

My mom came by and watched this episode over my shoulder. She liked it, which was nice.

This episode was a nice little summation of everything that happened so far, and what it represented. Some of the parenting stuff came off as a little obvious, given how much had already been said to that point on the subject.

Still, it was as good an episode as ever. All the stuff with loose teeth and jump rope was very cute and easy to understand. It's easy to be nostalgic about it.

I really enjoyed this series. It's cute without being pandering, dramatic without being melodramatic, realistic without being boring. When I watch anime, I'm so used to caricature and absurdism, even in shows with grounded settings. Usagi Drop is really different. It's not perfectly representational of life, but most of the situations are things that anyone might encounter, and the characters react much more like real people than one would expect from anime. And while the overall message was obvious (parenting is awesome!), each character's particular situation is handled with a lot of nuance.

I'm very sorry I didn't watch this sooner. It might be my favorite show of my "season".

For all the Japanese cultural elements Usagi Drop has, the core themes of parenting and childhood that it taps into are universally relatable.

You should watch some Isao Takahata works, such as Anne of Green Gables and Only Yesterday. He's very good at depicting realistic humans.
