In the underground portion, there was an entire chapter spent describing Kaiji's shower routine. This was covered in 10 seconds in the anime.

Yes, it's got flaws. I never stated that it didn't.
I never stated that you did. I was stating what I thought were examples of bad writing in Ano Hana.

I disliked the excessive angst and melodrama. Almost every episode someone's crying because of some reason and the show just tries too hard to make us cry. It's practically forcing people to be empathetic because Yadomi's tearing up on the screen. I consider this the worst flaw of Ano Hana.
Essentially, melodrama.

And I think you're mistaken about something. It doesn't try too hard to elicit empathy because it never attempted to by the end. It's a direct emotional appeal, which is what the melodrama in Ano Hana amounted to.

But in the end, I think the visuals and the music manage to hold together the lackluster plot and end up with a cohesive whole. Even with the flaws, I still enjoyed watching it.
Entirely disagree. While good visuals and good music can elevate a work, I would say they're nothing without decent direction. It's equivalent to judging this season's Aquarion Evol on. And also, praising good music and good visuals can be quite superficial and doesn't indicate much about the actual work in question.

And I also wholly disagree on it becoming a cohesive whole at the end. The series composition was bad when you consider among other things how many dropped plot points there were and our payoff for our investment in these character developments. The beginning of Episode 9 is a huge fuck you to the audience. Literally.

For me, if I managed to enjoy the anime in the end despite its shortcomings and it doesn't make me want to drop it midway, I'd still consider it a success to some degree. I can accept that you don't quite like it though.
There is no problem in enjoying and liking a show with flaws. But in the case of Ano Hana, it wasn't because of its shortcomings that it became a bad show, and I disagree it was a success either. The love triangle and the emphasis on Menma's family's plight sent the melodrama in disarray as they were unnecessary to begin with considering at what point in the story it occurred and how long the story was planned as. I can still like a show even if it was unsuccessful because the ideas appeal to me, but it doesn't mean I think those ideas were communicated or executed well either. It's why I think Ano Hana as a melodramatic show fails very much in the 2nd half at the very least. The strong conclusion doesn't not mask this at all, which is only the 2nd half of the last episode ironically.

Regarding Okada's writing, I wouldn't call this disastrous. I consider Fractale to be much worse a product than Ano Hana.
Sure, but Ano Hana is still very much a good example of bad writing from Okada.

The Light of El Cantare
AnoNatsu 11:

Finally caught up. That was certainly a drastic change from what we've come to expect from the show thus far, but I don't feel that the sudden turn toward
action
is necessarily at odds with the established mood of the show. This was the culmination of the characters' struggle to resolve their feelings, and as it seems that
everyone has decided to allow Kaito and Ichika to pursue their happiness together
, why not allow these feelings to be put into action in a very bold way?

It's certainly preferable to the show ending with a whimper as
Tanigawa disappears from Kaito's life, Tetsurou disappears from Tanigawa's life
and so on with the distasteful and depressing feeling that everyone is just lying to themselves about
wanting the objects of their respective unrequited loves to be happy
.

The details of
the plan to find the mysterious locale genetically embedded in the memories of Ichika's race
were pretty sketchy and it's a super-ultra-mega-contrivance to squeeze a happy ending out of an impossible situation, but there wasn't much in the way of actual technobabble, just some very, very basic references to
interstellar law
and such. I didn't find any of it particularly disruptive to my enjoyment.

Remon's driving the fucking Gadgetmobile. I like her air of mystery but I still can't help but really want to know every last thing about her true identity and motives by the finale.

I think I'll end up watching Spacebros after it has aired for a while, considering how long-running it'll end up being. Gonna put that on my to-watch list.

Alright, fine...

Including continuations:

1. Persona 4 (yes, i'm a fanboy)
2. Mirai Nikki (nostalgia from the manga)
3. Rinne no Lagrange (dunno why, it's just fun/visually pretty/clean. I like robots despite the lack of them for about half the series. Also bought the Single cause it's good, I love Megumi Nakajima and dat Rasmus Faber)
4. Another (every episode/death I watch my expression is just this or this)
5. Nichibros (funny all around, didn't expect to laugh, left in tears of hilarity. Internal monologue scenes are really well done. Literature Girl (who has no other name) vs. Ringo is a debate for the ages)
6. Ano Natsu (unless Kanna turnaround; i'll forever be bitter. Show has decent pacing and Remon trolling, nostalgia for Please Teacher)
7. Symphogear (weird/cool concept, yuri for everyone, fun show, decent music, neat battles, Hibiki is a decent harem leader)
8. High School DxD (for all the... uh, plot... especially that ED. Also that one cute girl)
9. Zero no Tsukaima F (finally a return to form after a lot of disappointment. So sad it's the end. I love kugilolis)
10. Shakugan no Shana Third (basically after the slowly off-rails nature of S2, this too was a great return to form and the source material. I love kugilolis).

Honorable mentions:
Papakiki (Banana-man will live on forever in our hearts), Nisemono (thanks for the massive amounts of gif material and fanservice), Inu x Boku (Karuta), BRS (mostly because thanks for the laughs), and Amagami SS+ Rihoko.

Highschool DxD - END

Last two episodes are basically stock serious business damsel in distress, hero saves the day etc. Basically what ecchi shows suck most at.

Well the middle part of the series was entertaining enough, so I at least took something out of it.

Yeah, I pretty much agreed with all of this in my review of ep. 11. The middle ofthe show was pretty good, but this last arc is not. It's painfully generic and just not nearly as interesting or fun as the show was before.

High School DxD end

A bit disappointed they wasted so much time on insignificant stuff, but great ending otherwise. The fake-out in the fight with
Issei about to use some big attack but the armor deactivating just so he could do another big attack
was great (though I did want to see the first one). The rest was just heartwarming even if the wrong girl won.

Not much more I can say about the series as a whole. It did what it set out to do and never went against its intentions. Fun characters, frequent badass action, cute situations; what's not to like? Though I still am a bit miffed that
Rias won even though Asia's introduction episodes made it seem like she would be the front-runner (and rightfully so).
Ah well, that's how the genre is I guess.
I'm pretty sure that the explanation is that
he considers Asia to be like his sister, pretty much, so he doesn't really see her as a love interest even though she likes him.
That sort of makes sense really.

Anyway, I think this counts as more proof that the harem genre can be pretty damn good. Not quite at the level of SnO, but that's hard to get to in any genre. Favorite show of the season by far.
Eh, it was alright. Maybe slightly better than MajiKoi, I guess; the highs weren't as high, but the lows weren't as low either. Definitely not as good as IS or Daimao though. Not sure about Samurai Girls, offhand.

Blood|+ 4

I was afraid the George stuff would be resolved already but was pleasantly surprised.
So far they're balancing plot lines well enough to keep me engaged.

Gundam 00 S2 8

Hated it when they killed him in the first season but I'm really enjoying the fallout of Lockon's death. The whole twin thing is a bit rough though.
Patrick Colasour is back? Good times are ahead. Ballroom scene was executed better than I thought it could be too.

Ending the episode with this guy reappearing was just cruel. Now I want to watch more.

G Gundam 27

Strangest Indian character I've ever seen. Domon's shift in characterization is so good too. Much more appreciative and forgiving of Rain, his comrades, etc. Although that cold shoulder he gave in the ep cut deeper than words could.

Sailor Moon R 75

Well now, another one of those surprisingly intense action episodes. It works as another great example as just how far Usagi has come.

Sailor Moon R 76

And, of course, this episode touches on how far she still has to go. Worst monster of the week since Boxy too. This entire episode is weird, like really weird. Tuxedo Mask's speech, which I normally adore, was a hint to defeating the Droid yet I still had this feeling he had a stroke and was just talking to himself.

Black★Rock Shooter TV 8

So with spring starting soon, how about some winter season rankings!?

1. Black Rock Shooter - It's all I watched :(

Gauche the Cellist

Despite the fantasy elements (to which Takahata brought his usual flair), this is a fairly accurate portrayal of the culture of musicians and musical performance. Even though it wasn't 100% accurate, there was more attention made to properly animating the performers' movements than I've seen in any other anime. It's nice to know someone cared. The conductor is about what I would expect a conductor of a provincial theater orchestra to be - not very skilled, but extremely passionate. I've certainly worked with people like him.

Beethoven's 6th was used very effectively - both from the perspective of practical performance, and from the standpoint of linking it in with the pastoral imagery of its program. Beethoven's stern face is the perfect representation of the spiritual presence of the Old Masters, judging the young musician struggling with their music.
I really liked the subversion of that image in the cuckoo scene. Beethoven had a keen sense of humor, after all, and you can't approach his music in a unremittingly dour mood, least of all the 6th.

The message that the film reaches at the end is "Music is awesome!", and that's a message I can thoroughly get behind. When you are able to pour your deepest emotions into your performance, your audience will sense that and be moved accordingly. There really is nothing like that experience, on either end.

The film was a joy to look at, with special honors going to the rich backgrounds:

I could go into all the small details that made it so great - the conductor's shoe, the animal-eye's perspective, etc. - but suffice it to say that it's another masterpiece from Isao Takahata.

1. Nichibros
2. Aquarion Evol (A bit of an acquired taste, I must admit)
3. Nise (Something of a love/hate thing)

Is it Spring yet?

It's that bad, huh. I remember being fairly pumped from the previews of it. I guess there's no hope for the sequels to be any better than the first one?

I think if they focus exclusively on the mindless action and ditch absolutely everything else then it might be worth watching for the inner sakugawhore otherwise I wouldn't really hold my breath.

Hitokage

Was this the cake shop episode?

Also, maybe by now you might have noticed a certain attribute held by a certain blue skirt. If not, don't worry about it as it's just a weird minor thing that comes up.

End end spoilers:
Next week's episode is the last one, and it's gonna be the Izanagi fights/fog globe battle, probably followed by the goodbye scene at the train.

How badly condensed has it been? I've been letting it finish before I resume my marathon.

Essentially, melodrama.

And I think you're mistaken about something. It doesn't try too hard to elicit empathy because it never attempted to by the end. It's a direct emotional appeal, which is what the melodrama in Ano Hana amounted to.

Well, I thought the 'emotional appeal' was hampered by the unrealistic plot and characters by the end. The melodrama was well done at the start and I could relate to the characters empathatically. The series of bad plot decisions by Okada broke the characters and immersion; I agree that by the end it wasn't eliciting empathy. It was appealing using pathos by having everyone bawling their eyes out and, because of Okada's bad writing earlier on, it failed to connect to me.

Literally.

I value music over visuals and both over story so my standards are different from yours. I can admit that may be superficial but these two things are what made me be a fan of anime. Story is often secondary to me. As long as the story isn't a trainwreck or is outright boring, I can deal with it to a certain degree until the ending. If the ending still fails to redeem anything or is nonsensical, I will then list story as a weakness.

I was personally fine with the love triangle even though it didn't amount to anything substantial. I agree that the Menma's family plot line was fairly useless.
In the end with all its flaws, Ano Hana was sufficiently entertaining throughout the show. Yes, the melodrama simply failed at the second half. Okada's bad writing obfuscated much of the second half for me, rendering the characters and my empathy for them detached. But at the end of the day, I liked Ano Hana and I will defend it for being a genuinely entertaining watchm even with its great first half and lackluster second half. As you stated, there is no problem in enjoying and liking a show with flaws. I agree with that a lot.

This is a tangent and not aimed at anyone, but I just think some people these days are mixing up good anime and their favourite anime. Two of my favourite anime are Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Code Geass S1. They both have flaws in the pacing and writing, especially Code Geass with its horrendous writing and TTGL with the sudden shift in tone and story with its second half. However, both were sufficiently entertaining, along with good music and visuals, which are just bonuses. That's what I define as my favourite anime, something I can enjoy that makes me appreciate the medium known as anime.
