*shrug* Maybe the pictures were deceptive. Enlighten me, oh wise one.
It doesn't really look better or worse. It's just a thing, I guess. I mean it looks "better" at native resolution but it's 540p which is a perfect double scale to 1080p so a clean upscale will have the same detail with no undesirable scaling artifacts. So basically it looks the same.

Are you suggesting self-restraint? On the internet?

I wish I hadn't been spoiled for School Days. Now I don't see the point in watching it.
Without mentioning any details, did you get the whole thing spoiled or just the ending? Because I had the ending semi-spoiled and I think it actually improved my experience.

I wouldn't have checked it out in the first place if GAF was subtle like that.

People would prefer to be part of the spectacle rather than the audience, I suppose.

I don't know. This looks better than this to me. (From the link I posted in my edited post.) And I thought you were the resident videophile. ;)

You must be at least a level 4 videophile to appreciate the improvements in the BD.

No sane person would actually watch all of School Days on their own without a little... coaxing.

I admit I originally dropped after 5 episodes, but then my friends insisted I finished, so I did.

Man, it's almost impossible to describe how I felt at the end. It's quite an experience, that's for sure.

Everything looks "better" downsampled
Yes, but this isn't a downsample. Okay, technically it is, since we don't have the master copy that Bones has/had at the original 540p resolution, before any filters and other touch-ups. Regardless, unless that still from the BD is inaccurate, it doesn't look that good at 1080p.

For the record, I own the first part of Brotherhood on Blu-ray, though I don't have a Blu-ray drive in my computer.

It looks okay

... I know, this is my first post in this thread. This is about all the anime I've watched since it opened...

Bodacious Space Pirates 6 - I know I've said "this is the show of the year so far and one of the best animes in some time" every episode for like five episodes now, but... well, it is, hands down, the best anime of either this or last year. I don't think that I agree with the other people saying that this episode is way better than the last few, though; I loved those episodes, after all, so there wasn't much to improve from. What it is is a great episode in a great sci-fi anime series. This is sci-fi anime done right, if only more series like this existed...

I wasn't sure if this episode would hold up to the greatness of the past arc, because the plot's moved forward and now she's on the pirate ship, but it easily succeeds at doing so. The episode's one part training episode, but it's amusing too; the sheer volume of bureaucracy they have to go through to get her the license is good stuff. :) The episode also somewhat explains why they are allowed to still be a pirate ship even though the war ended; it's kind of a weak explanation, but it mostly makes sense (
basically they're treated by the galactic government as a military force
).

Then comes the training arc, where she and Chiaki (being tsun as usual) learn about captaining a pirate ship. The climax is a real-world test, which was both awesome and pretty funny.
Seriously, the reaction of the people in that space liner they pirate -- the crowd cheering in happiness at hearing that the pirates were coming -- was kind of hilarious. People don't exactly consider them to be much of a threat, that's for sure... but if the liner company's reimbursing them for losses, as the episode said it does, I guess it kind of makes sense (and of course, no one was hurt either). I doubt it'll all be so easy for her though, at least surely not from people like those who attacked her in the previous arc. The MC's entrance into the liner ballroom and swordfight were great.

In the end, Chiaki
left for her ship without saying goodbye. Tsun to the end.
Fantastic episode as usual, overall!

High School DxD 4-6 - I'm really enjoying this show. Some of the things I said in my eps 1-3 review -- most notably, the part about how the show always tries hard to present the main characters, all demons of course, as worthy, not particularly evil people -- still holds absolutely true. The fallen angels are the real evil faction apparently... they sure are much more evil than this group of demons anyway. I like that the main characters aren't evil -- if they were I'd be much less likely to be watching the show -- but still, it is kind of odd, compared to how you expect demons to act. Now, I know that they have killed sometimes, but only those clearly doing wrong.

And also, we still don't know anything about the price people have to pay to the demons to get their help through those contracts. All of the people the MC has been to see are pretty silly and have bizarre requests (
the big guy who wants to be a magical girl, that girl wearing armor who wants to confess to her boyfriend, etc... :lol
), but the show just talks about what they want and shows the MC and others helping them (or not, if he doesn't know how to help them), not anything about what they get for it. I mean, the stereotypical deal with a devil isn't exactly something with a low price, though in this universe, which as I've said before is its own thing and not really based on any actual real-world religious examples, who knows.

So anyway, yeah, this show is good. It's very fanservicey of course, surprisingly so for a TV broadcast -- there are no censors at all, anywhere, as far as I can see -- but it's got more going for it than just that. The characters are likable, the writing solid, and the episodes all pretty good for the genre. This is most certainly a harem action show. It's heavier on the action side of that than some harem action shows, for sure, but it is in that genre.
So the girl (actually fallen angel) who killed him in ep. 1 is dead already, killed by Rias after the MC beat her in a fight... the first arc is over for sure. The end of ep. 6 introduces the next villain though, so it's obviously not over (and that other fallen angel guy, the crazy priest, did escape, I believe).

Oh, on the note of "changes between anime and manga", the manga doesn't show anything at all of Rias's fight outside, against the other three fallen angels; the anime shows the prelude to it, though not the fight itself. Also, the main villain (the fallen angel woman who killed him)'s death is more explicit in the manga -- her skeleton is shown, after Rias's attack. The anime only shows feathers on the ground as the aftermath.

Also, of course, there's one more member of their group now, the
healer girl. On the note of her, I find it kind of odd that she can't pray to God without being hit by waves of pain or something, because she's a demon now, but when the MC prayed to God in that church as one of his attempts to save her nothing of the sort happened to him... I don't get that at all. If demons who pray to God get struck like that, shouldn't he certainly have too? Sure, the parts with her are kind of amusing, but it's inconsistent with his experience.

So yeah, as I said in the 1-3 review, this is the amusingly watchable stupid harem action show of the season, so far anyway.

Also, I reviewed eps 7-9 of The Sacred Blacksmith in the last thread, but I don't know if I've ever reviewed ep. 6. I'll just say that it both shows why the franchise occasionally has promise, and also why it's so stupid much more of the time. This episode had both elements in it in spades. The good moments don't make up for the fact that overall it was pretty poor, and of course the same applies to the show as a whole. Why watch it anyway? Apart from "it's fantasy and I like fantasy settings", I can't think of any reasons, so that's probably the one, I guess.

I've never seen School Days. I don't think I'm missing anything.

I haven't watched it either. I know the spoilers and don't think I'm missing anything of note.

You're missing out on bragging rights that you've watched every harem show out there.

Ever since I finished Planetes I have developed a tendency to just zone out and drown in my own thoughts.

Not that I didn't already do this but now it's worse.

At least I sort of have a handle on cosmic, ABF just continues to confuse and confound me.

How so? Is this about me enjoying High School DxD, or something else?

I haven't watched anywhere remotely near every harem show out there and would have no interest in doing so. The generic, romance-focused harem shows, for instance, rarely interest me at all... plenty of people here have watched a lot more of those things than I have, that's for sure.

Black Rock Shooter 3

They toned down the angst a bit this week, so the show is just a boring type of bad now, though that love letter scene was pretty funny. I wonder how much more they can squeeze out of this silly bird motif.

Never in the history of anime have I ever been so HAPPY at a protagonist getting their arm sliced off! XD I like Shu when he's getting beat down for being the stupid little shit he is! XD

Wow I just had the most amazing experience.

I was at the Berlinale watching The End of Puberty, some japanese movie about a teenager Tsubara who is obsessed with her biology teacher Madoka.
He is a pretty odd introverted person with a lot of tics.
One day she ambushes him after school and ends up switching the genitals with him after intercourse as she planned (well this is just the premise so I will stop here, the movie is pretty funny and has some interesting scenes, so watch for yourselves someday).

However after the movie was over the director a 25 year old japanese woman (pretty good looking) had a Q&A round in which she explains the names of the 4 characters

Madoka (the teacher)
Tsubara (who is in love with him)
En (a girl who is in love with Tsubara)
Maru (a kind of stupid guy who loves En, endearing though)

Apparently these are all different writings for "circle" "perfect" "wholesome"
and (Here It Comes) while explaining that the director two times exclaimed "Maru" while drawing a circle in air with her hand.

Yeah just wanted to share that.

High School Girls are the worst of all.

Highschool girls can be pretty terrifying:

1. They don't follow the bro-code of fights
2. Teachers will always trust a girl over a boy, and the girls know this
3. Asian girls in particular are good at shaming their male counterparts in academics
4. They can be emotionally ruthless, and high school is when boys are at their most vulnerable stage in life

And girls never have to worry about getting a sudden erection in the middle of class.

Although I guess that's still preferable over bleeding every month.

Highschool girls are also really really good at moving together in packs. Like wolves.

School Days - 03

-Now the Student Council girls are being the party poopers.
-Green-haired girl is getting suspicious of Sekai.
-You gotta step it up Katsura.

School Days - 04

-
OH YEAH, YOU GET IN THAT MAKOTO. MAKOTO WITH THE SQUEEZE!
-Oh screw you Katsura. Stop being a party pooper. The one male protagonist who doesn't get a nosebleed around women and you're acting like that.
-
Oh, she's just more of the uber-romantic type, I get that.

School Days - 05

-The fanservice episode. Eh, I suppose this will just be filler?
-I suppose not. DAT MELODRAMA.
Really Makoto? You're gonna go straight for Sekai's butt cheek like that? Anyways, Katsura's boring. The chemistry between Makoto and Sekai has just been soooo much better. But dude, Makoto, you gotta dump Katsura first before you pull that shit. Messed up. I may consider Katsura to be a boring person but she doesn't deserve the scandalous behavior that's being committed behind her back.
I can understand why this show was the topic of discussion a while back.

School Days - 06

-"I wonder if he's sleeping." Your thoughts aren't too far from the truth, Katsura, you boring girl you.
-No. Now Katsura is starting to grow on me. Is it because I feel sorry for her? It's gotta be it. You're a nice girl, Katsura. You're a nice girl, but that don't cut it when you're being boring like this.
-Oh snap, where's
Joey Greco? Cuz Katsura is gonna need the entire crew of Cheaters right now.
-You POS Makoto.
Katsura is trying to love you to the best of her ability and she falls down on the sidewalk and you have the audacity to simply ask her, "Are you okay?"
-A new challenger has entered the ring!
-Katsura:
"Itou is my turf, bitch."
You go girl. You tell Otome who's
not really
boss.
You're all being played, you foolish girls.
-Oh...snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap.

They should rename noitamina Dumb & Dumber, at least for the next five weeks.

This week: BRS didn't even have action sequences, fucking fake advertisement; meanwhile, Guilty Crown decides to become the funniest comedy of the season.
