I agree! The teacher is up there as well.

haha I wish you said madness instead of insanity if you did I would have said "THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!" random I know.

:)

Maybe its just that Haruka is so godlike there was no need to mention her as best girl. That's the only way I can fathom not mentioning her.

Mushishi 1-4

So the first three episodes I didn't like. That's not to say that they weren't good, just that they didn't really attract me or grab my attention. The fourth was great, mostly because of how Ginko fucked up really badly. It was a very welcome change of structure and there were some tragic emotions involved. The story was much more emotional than the prior ones and combined with Ginko's errors, really made me like this episode in particular. I'm hoping the cases are closer to episode 4 than to 1-3.

Man, you didn't like the first three ones? Not even the first? I don't know if you are going to like most of the series, then.

That's kind of why I stopped after 2 and am still unsure if I'll go on. I think its the MC in part, I just find him very uninteresting.

Maybe watching this after falling in love with Natsume was a mistake.

Need anime recommendations, I barely watch them at all. I've only seen Golgo 13, Akira, and some of Ghost in the Shell. What I'd like:

-Modern setting
-Mature with little to no comedy
-Action
-As little sci-fi as possible

Basically, is there anything out there like Golgo 13? I tried Ghost in the Shell and, while I think its cool, sometimes it gets too obscure for my taste.

Here's an example of Golgo 13: LINK.

Thanks very much!

Jormungand, but it isn't very good, imo

If by modern setting you mean no fantastical flair, lots of things people have recommend you won't meet your criteria.

Glad there is someone else who doesn't get the fanaticism over Sherlock.

I think Sherlock is still okay, certainly better than Elementary but I'd still rank it lower than say; Frogwares game series and basil the great mouse detective.

Natsume is essentially an inferior Mushishi in my opinion (at least when it's not doing multi-episode stories), though I can see why some people would prefer its lightheartedness.

200 years from now we'll still be using Windows.

Much better episode. There's some interesting dynamics going on in the Garmillian military leadership.

Also, how horrifying:

Sometimes painted stills really are better than the alternative!

Kyousougiga 6

The priest is such an insensitive jackass at this point. That whole "family bonding" montage for Myoue looked almost like stockholm syndrome based on the portrayal before that. Not that I think the kid should have succeeded in his suicide attempts, but the guy that brought him back could at least act like he sympathizes rather than forcing a new life on him.

Also, shit be getting real.

It isn't slow, careful character development I'm commenting on. There's no way for me to judge something like that after a single episode. I'm talking more the scenario.

So it's High School kids solving mysteries? Do the mysteries get better?

No, they dont. Stuff actually happens in Festival Arc though. Plus Misaki shows up and saves it.

This is a dogakoba show so theres some really nice cuts of animation but this really isn't grabbing me the same way Lova Lab did, thanks to the really dull premise and the fairly uninteresting characters. Maybe it'll get better a few eps in but I really doubt it.

I mean, the top 2 posters in the thread like everything.

Much as I wish this were true, cajun does have that outspoken distaste for the second half of SAO despite never actually watching it. It makes me sad.

Look, I know this may contradict what I just said, but we have to draw the line somewhere. If you're putting mayo on your pizza, you're not living your life correctly.

Closest I come to putting mayo on pizza is dipping the crusts in garlic sauce. And I won't let anyone fault me on that.

Mayo is nice on chips, though. Fuck ketchup.

Utena's a girl?

They should've had a plot twist where everyone was a crossdresser.

But Utena is the only character whose gender such a plot twist wouldn't affect!

Yeah, uh, the text introducing the class on both pages actually includes the word "furry". I can't imagine that's an accident.

Nagi no Asukara 9 - 10

So the show was always gonna head towards some sort of
the world is doomed scenario
but I didn't think they would go about it this way with
sleep though the ice age. I thought at least it would be some crap about having to sacrifice an actual person and it would be Manaka or something like that.
Also best girl just became more relevant now that the love polygon just got more messy.

Bahahahahahahahahahaha
the funniest thing in this post is the suggestion that Chisaki is "best girl"

(I know understand why Who fans hate Moffat)

The reason Who fans hate Moffat is because they hate any showrunner. They loved Moffat before he took over that role.

(And with good reason too. Personally I find Davies' and Moffat's showrunning periods have both had their pros and cons.)

Can't expect a show to live up to Love Lab standards when it doesn't have the Ohta Masahiko/Aoshima Takashi combo behind it. But this show is wonderful anyway.

I enjoyed this episode and I've been really looking forward to this ever since hearing about it and seeing some pages of the manga but I don't think I can handle another episode of something so visually messy it almost makes what GoHands shits out look restrained by comparison. ._.

One thing I really liked about this was the use of pattern overlays on the shadows.

Will stick with the show if the story pans out.

Also how are the JoJo Stardust Crusader OVAs?
The 90s one is great the 2000s one less great. Both cut out a lot of content and focus only on the major fights and events.

Mayo is not welcome.

The only truly bad people here are the ones that prefer boobs to butts.
Hear hear.

So, uh,
is there a reason evil UN guy wanted to attack the aliens?
I sure hope they're going to explain this.
The UNCF command felt that a surprise attack was the only way to ensure the alien fleet was annihilated. Trigger happy men in command isn't a new thing. As for why they evaluated the aliens as a threat that's anyone's guess, and isn't really important. The outcome would have been the same anyway given what we know of Garmillan policy. The value of the revelation was more in us seeing how certain characters respond anyway. And it was foreshadowed several episodes in advance.

FTL travel didn't exist for humanity at that point though. :p
It did for the invading fleet though! I say invading because humanity had settlements in other inner solar system planets.

A bit off topic, but what the hell.

Armond White, in lieu of a top ten list, has traditionally released what he calls a "Better Than" list. This is some of the films from this year's list:
http://cityarts.info/2014/01/08/the-better-than-list-for-2013/

Man of Steel > Gravity

Zack Snyder’s powerful visionary re-imagining of the spiritual potential in comix trounces Alfonso Cuaron’s second-rate Kubrick-DePalma rip-off.

Pain & Gain > The Wolf of Wall Street

Michael Bay satirizes American ambition in imagery so bright and exhilarating it exposes the core of spiritual dislocation and rot that Scorsese turns into another self-pleased, overlong gangster epic.

The Gardener > The Act of Killing

Moshen Makhamalbaf’s brilliant father-to-son survey of belief systems linked by Love contrasts Joshua Oppenheimer’s repugnant, fraudulent vaudeville about Indonesia’s death squads–smart-ass political porn.

42 > 12 Years a Slave, Lee Daniels’ The Butler

Brian Helgeland interlaced two sides (Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey) of America’s civil rights revolution, making the familiar intense, warm and radiant as Myth. Race-hustler Steve McQueen overplayed the guilt card and Lee Daniels mortgaged his pride in lieu of skill.

See, when Zac/ANN tries to say something contrarian like Wolf Children is a bad film because it has perfect moms and Hosoda can't relate because he's an old man, it feels intellectually dishonest and empty. Yet, for whatever reason, I can respect the audacity of Armond White's "troll" list. I think he's insane most of the time, but I also feel like there is some rigor behind the troll so I can at least respect it.

Or to put it another way - I ain't even mad. lol

I'll admit I like Armond. And really I don't really consider him to be a troll, but rather being someone who doesn't toe the line and puts forth his opinions with rigor and vigor. In a way he reminds me of games reviewer Tom Chick, who I also like and who also gets tarred with the troll label.

Oh yes, Tom Chick. lol
I haven't heard his name in a while... I wonder if he put out a 2013 list.

I actually enjoy listening to White whenever he comes on the /Filmcast. He's so patronizing to the two hosts and essentially tears apart whatever movie they invite him on to talk about, but I really can't say anything he says is necessarily "wrong". I may disagree with him, but I I agree to disagree.

And, I suppose, he's right inasmuch as Django Unchained went from being an interesting deconstruction of race politics and slavery in America to a film that has since been forgotten and already supplanted by 12 Years a Slave.

---

Tom Chick's GOTY 2013:
Grand Theft Auto V is as much a state of mind as a story or a set of gameplay systems. It’s a grand psychoanalysis and canny indictment of open-worlds, of videogame characters, of slaughter without consequence, of the entertainment industry, of race, of gender, of men, of cars and guns, of enchanced interrogation, of music and TV stations, of Southern California, of America. The iconoclasts at Rockstar have finally found a voice — indeed, a set of voices — to give clarity, structure, and operatic scale to the disaffected “fuck you’s” they’ve been muttering since they first envisioned a world where you could just take whatever car you want. Mean, petty, grand, sublime, ongoing, stunning, unforgettable, relevant, epic, intimate, and something that you could only do in a videogame. Instead of asking “where is the Citizen Kane of videogames?”, we should ask “where is the Grand Theft Auto V of movies?”
Dickens Indeed!

Mad enough to post here bra.
Naw man, I love this list.

Camille Claudel 1915, Hannah Arendt, Byzantium, Mental, American Hustle > Blue Jasmine

Binoche, Sukowa, Arterton, Adams, Lawrence, Collette gave a year of revelatory female performances through inspired auteurs, all ignored for Cate Blanchett’s dreadful, facetious embodiment of another foul Woody Allen conceit. The problem with contemporary film culture–in skirts.
I mean, that's just funny.

No he's definitely a troll. He's an attention seeker who plays a role he created so well that it could well be that he actually believes some of what he says these days, but it doesn't make him any less of a troll.

Yup. I think the concept of a "better than" list is pretty indicative of somebody that's attempting to antagonize.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii don't think this show is for me guys. I mean, is there a hook, or a twist, or a change coming up? Or is this the premise of the show? Cuz, with all due respect, and in every hope not to overly judge a show I have only seen a single episode of, it felt really . . . cliche? Generic? Done? I'm not sure what the right word is but a disaffected teenager roped into a romance with a manic girl and an investigation of the X wonders of mundane place Y are all really standard plot mechanisms in anime, and while the show looked nice enough, there didn't really seem to be much of note there. It wasn't bad, but based on the first episode it doesn't really seem that interesting to me.

You may now begin to commence the heckling of my bad taste.

I dropped it too, but at episode 4 or so. Looks pretty, but doesn't seem to operate on any level above that.

Contender for Anime of the season for me, this is.

Mikakunin is so POP and WHOOP. Know what I mean? The MV and PV had me sold already, the tunes are catchy, the animation is fantastic, and the character designs are sweet~
