Oh yes yes yes that confrontation was amazing. So full of all the emotions. Banri and Kouko really are the best couple in anime history.

I was initially very unimpressed by the dad thanks to the massive slap - nothing deserves that - but it's impressive that he nonetheless managed to overturn that awful first impression and win me over by the end of the episode. What a classy guy XD

Hmm. Not quite best couple. Scenes with Kaoru and Aoi in Ai Yori Aoshi are incredibly heartwarming.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha Episode 3:

Fucking hell I think this series just stretched the credibility of the proceedings beyond reason.
NOBODY noticed the giant plant that appears to have done significant amounts of property damage to the entire city????
I get what the episode is trying to accomplish
in that this is all about Nanoha making a mistake and dealing with the consequences. of that mistake
Still, i hate it when emotional resonance comes at the cost of willing suspension of disbelief.
Also, dear god but this series is blowing through its mcguffins in a hurry.
All and all, this was as impressive as a lesser monster of the week episode from Sailor Moon.

Continue. It changes soon and stuff starts getting real. Mechanical magical warfare real.

I think by the time I thought about the list, I stopped caring about where things would actually place since everything was already set in stone. Perhaps there's also recency bias, especially since the voting rules still make no sense (Madoka doesn't qualify even though people had the chance to watch it here in the format it was actually meant to be seen in? Of course, I'm just salty because I know Rebellion is going to be forgotten this year anyway).

If Madoka qualified this year, it wouldn't come up on 90% of the lists since no one got to watch it. I think the rules are fair since it balances the playing field in the sense that anyone can watch any show as long as they are willing to invest the time.

I voted for it last year and it charted. I'd rather see something else up there this year. Shows running into the Winter feel like a weird loophole in AOTY, especially last year because of how late the voting was.
I mean over half of From the New World aired in 2013. I feel more willing to vote for it again because it reached a very satisfying and well thought out conclusion I guess.

Its a hard decision in terms of rules. On one hand I can see the point in people not judging a series(well season) before its done, given how easily shows can go pear shaped in the second half. On the other if its a good show and it was watched this year its tough to deny allowing people to vote for it. I know I put at least one half finished show on my top 10 (Log Horizon).

I would have been interested to see if Wolf Children could have beat back the Yamato avalanche but sadly we won't know.

The Movie/OVA list next year is gonna be hella crowded.

Well it's awkward because I don't like to vote for shows that aren't finished, but if you wait until the next year people may have already forgotten it. That's kind of why I'd prefer if voting didn't happen until three months into the year, but most people aren't that patient.

A Centaur's Life anime where are you?
You have the best ideas.
Dynasty tags some of those chapters with NSFW, so I just assumed it was porn with horse girls.

I think it probably would have made the list at the very least, which it probably won't do by the time people write up their votes in January 2015 for the next one.

Yeah, to be fair, I do get a kick out of characters firing blasts at each other, and Nanoha has that.

it has that in spades. Mist fun part is watching the mechanical wizardry and the brutal battles. Cute girls battling cute things.

Keep up with the pictures. much appreciated

This episode was so much gif worthy
First the drama is gone , as expected they actually toned it down enough to still have bits of comedy .
Next week we're back on full comedy.

Second , the characters are awesome as expected. The episode had a display of reaction moments quite impressive.
And then the plot tickens , they aren't even trying to hide "that" familly secret but i must say that the forshadowing is pretty much well done.

Overall , this was a good episode and a great show overall ..too much things to comment on actually , but most would be spoilers.

this show makes some really fun gifs. I like kobeni although shes kind of vapid.

Kannagi - it was kind of alright I guess. Or at least it didn't drive me away. I at least liked the idea of dealing with a deity losing their power/memories due to not being worshipped, etc. Would have liked some more answers though...like what is up with Shino. And would have liked the show to have done something with Zange's host.

Kannagi is really well animated sometimes. Its adorable and Kozue is the most so, but it just ended without any resolution whatsoever. It literally just picked a stopping point and quit.

I think it has a lot to do with the subject matter as well. Sci-fi (especially space opera) appeals really well to nerds and the regulars in this thread are nothing if not nerds.

All the nerdy sci-fi babble (in impression posts) almost turned me away from Yamato, because I lack almost any reference points for that sort of stuff. A lot of it honestly struck me as being sneery and exclusionary.

It did end with the very blatant 'buy the manga to get the rest of the story' open ending.

What if its a split season and the next part airs in Spring?

We can't really bend the rules for special cases since we kinda lose the point of a yearly award. The nature of a yearly cutoff is arbitrary as it is anyway.

I personally use a test where I ask myself if what's been shown is enough for me to think it was one of the best shows of the year. For something like, Fate/Zero a few years ago or Shinsekai Yori last year, it was good enough at the cutoff point for me to vote for it but for something like Golden Time this year, I feel like the conclusion is important enough to my overall enjoyment of the series that I would need to wait.

The surprising thing isn't that the regulars here took to it, it's that a bunch of others did as well and voted for it in the AOTY thread. I don't know if it's just the lurker effect or what.

Wolf Children came out on BD in Japan in February 2013. Its probably gonna run away with the GAF AMOTY so your argument is invalid. You're just pissy because there's no way it can win next year against the Ghibli movies :p

mfw watching the final fight I think
Wow, that battle near the end was awesome.
This is what I imagined a good Pupa anime would look like, but instead we got some shitty adaptation.

Well, I don't really care, I suppose, since I think Yamato is the only thing I picked that will end up in the top ten anyway. I just think the rules are weird when it doesn't account for the fact that people can watch it legitimately.

Magical Warfare Episode 4

The bullet throwing scene of Ida was a good one and exciting moment but most of the episode felt so unexciting. I think there is some disconnect happening between the source material to the anime that the anime is just unable to reach the same exciting levels for these events. Perhaps if they had glitzed up the attacks a bit and had a stronger soundtrack then it would have truly felt much better and more pressing than it did. The eye stuff was a bit much as well and I just cant ever shake comparing it to other series when he does it.

? People can watch Wind Rises and Princess Kaguya legitimately too. Should we add them to the list as well?

Sure, if you think it's one of the best movies you saw in 2013?

There's someone here who goes to that Scottish anime film festival. He should be able to put whatever he saw on his list if he thinks they are his favourite films of the year.

because he found out grandpa is DEAD!

Wow.

Appreciate the reminder for the time limit though. It has been a while.

You're just being silly then since none of them have a chance to hit the top 10 so the only mention they'll have in the thread is on your list. You could get an equivalent result now if you put it on your list btw.

google docs is your friend for posts like that.

Yes, thanks, I always use it for my work but I'm not used to long posts... big mistake.

Well, I remade in a kinda shorter way, posted images and it´s now 4am... but I completed it and I'm happy for it, this was fun. Wish I could have wrote in a more confident way and with better ideas but I feel it was worth the effort.

It´s funny, it´s videogames what I could vote with more confidence but I have never voted in the GOTY, but I was really interested in participating in the AOTY even if I have little experience and just watched a bunch of shows... I guess anime is kinda a new world to me and I'm more excited to talk about it.

it just comes down to the fact that most people in the thread weren't able to watch the movie, so it's not up for voting. extremely limited release in the states + japan isn't enough considering how broad our userbase is.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha Episode 4:

This was a pretty boring episode for the most part, veering into pointless slice of life territory at points. Also, the monster of the week was just dumb,
I get why it was a literal giant kitten to show how tragically evil the rival is, it was still stupid.
Anyway, the highlight of the episode is the introduction of Fate Testarosa, don't know much about her intentionally so, but I am at least aware that she is significant to the series as a whole. Still waiting for that shit getting real moment, a dark magical girl is about as bog standard as you can get.

Where the fuck are my KLK 16 subs. My boner can only be preemptively hard for so long.

Have to wait until at least 12:30am CST for the subs. Simulcasters are stating "production issues," but another reason may be because of episodes leaking before the Japanese airing. Same thing is happening with Chu2.2, after a French simulcast site tweeted that some other unnamed simulcaster had an episode leak early.

So you are saying we should blame Madman for this.
