The third episode however was pretty heartwarming, good stuff.

There is nothing wrong about enjoying a zombie anime that use every zzombie anime/movies stuff to stay consistent.
Heck it even innovate on several points.
HSOTD is watchable and enjoyable untill the end , especially since the pacing doesn't go down much.

We have the actual format of the show so far in that it's very flashback heavy. Why? Why are you focusing on developing the relationship of a character you already killed off to this extent? Maybe you should have used those flashback sequences in the first episode and tried to build up the yuri relationship before killing 'whatshername' off. The formatting robs the show of any narrative pace it has and doesn't work on an emotional level because why should be the audience be retroactively invested in a literal dead-end romance?

It's Ikuhara, Penguindrum already showed he has no ability to stop himself from over-indulging in pace and flow ruining flashbacks. He also loved flashbacks in Utena, even if they were used much better there.
