The shadow committee (not to be confused with the shadow council) has agreed that Konosuba fans would probably like Senyuu too.

Future Boy Conan 21

With the firm anti-technology stance taken here, there's a direct line from the Miyazaki who directed this show in 1978 to the Miyazaki who condemned auto-generated CG animation in 2016.

This is also where I marvel that Tomino was able to make perfectly good storyboards before he began directing his own shows.

Oh Germany.

Sure is a lot of talk in here about the sex in Scum's Wish 5, but I guess it's warranted. There was more on screen sex in this single episode than in a years worth of regular anime.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.

It would be a decade's worth if it weren't for Yosuga no Sora.

I think it's nearly beaten Yosuga no Sora as well.

Is the sex in Scum's Wish any good? Erotic? Sensual? Exploitative? Or is it just typical plot developing sex in a TV anime which shows nothing?

I'm not really sure how I feel about the adaptation now, particularly after talking about it a few days ago here and letting it breathe a bit. In many ways, cuts like this makes the show feel like Monogatari, but it doesn't quite work for me. Perhaps the biggest difference is that Monogatari's scenes are almost always dialogues, while these scenes are all monologues. So in Monogatari I'm learning new information about both the plot and the various characters' state of mind, where in Scum's Wish, I'm supposed to be enveloped in whatever misery the current character is feeling at the moment.

But while I think it worked in the first couple of episodes since you're essentially stuck in Hana's head and the oppressiveness of her thoughts worked well, when you have the focus split between three or four characters, it begins to feel like free indirect discourse. Which is interesting to watch in a TV show, I suppose, but it also makes me wonder if this wouldn't be a better experience if I was reading it rather than passively watching it. The scenes with Mugi and the teacher from this episode in particular feel like I'm "watching a book", for lack of a better way to describe it.

I described it as shoujo-like before, but after watching this episode on its own, it definitely feels more than that because it feels like the author wants to make a comment on the nature of human relationships and the psychological baggage we bring to them rather than put us into the mindset of a particular point of view.

Perhaps not marathoning the show and watching it weekly also changes how I'm thinking about it, since I'm basically stuck thinking about a 20 minute work rather than the 80 minutes that I considered previously.

I was talking about this earlier in the IRC, but it's kind of odd that the "sex" is reduced to extreme close ups of faces and "graphic" French kissing. Perhaps it comes down them being teenagers and even trying to be more explicitly erotic with them would cross some kind of child pornography line... although I suppose in the context of emotionally empty sex, watching people experience "petite mort" through people crying makes sense. I am somewhat curious to see if the live action version is more explicit, but I'd imagine not (based on nothing more than assumptions about Japanese attitudes toward sex I suppose lol).

I just find the dichotomy interesting, because they seem to lovingly animate tongues penetrating orifices in great detail, but the direction obscures anything else that resembles sex.

It's none of those, funny enough. It's the tamest sex you'll ever see, even by American/British pre-watershed hours. But the kissing is so explicit that you get the impression that it's supposed to stand in for sex, even when the characters doing it don't actually have sex.

(I suppose you could reduce it to "mind fucking" rather than real fucking. lol)

finally caught up with S2 of Rakugo

I think I like the leads of S2 way more than S1. Yotaro is just fantastic. And the kid being so charismatic is fantastic and adorable, he learned that straight from his papa. I love how Konatsu is showing her goofy side to Yotaro instead of just being tsundere with him.

And I started giggling when her high pitched voice started cracking up because all I could think about was

It's so funny how I thought I heard her voice being familiar this whole time until she starts doing the high pitched and you pinpoint her immediately.

Maybe I'll break down and start with season 2. But I dunno, Jexhius' spoiler pretty much ruined it. lol

Haha. Sounds like Doukyuusei.

That's something of a relief to hear. With all the talk about sex going on, I was wondering if I would be able to keep watching.

Shaking my head over here.

The Konatsu thing that wasn't true but posted just to fuck with you because he knew you wouldn't actually check?

Jexhius' excerpt was accurate, but taken out of context in a rather misleading fashion.

I've given up trying to recommend anything to firehawk or holding any hope that he will watch shit I want to talk to him about. I love talking to him about stuff we have both seen, but as far as getting him to watch shit goes he just keeps finding all sorts of ways to dismiss recommendations in a way that makes people angry. There's no good faith. Sad!

Sorry that the judges sided with me!

Besides, as I've explained, mobage means I just background watch white people shows and movies now. Netflix started added German and French standup specials and I really want to watch them because I'm curious about what comedy is like in different languages, but I can't mindlessly grind terrible games like Fire Emblem if I have to read subtitles. lol

I mean, sex is extremely important, because the show seems very much wrapped up in teen expectations of sex being some kind of emotional peak that brings catharsis. The oddity just comes from the extreme kissing when contrasted with the essentially G rated sex/foreplay scenes.

remember that time firehawk watched all of Monster Musume for the side character that wasnt even a monster girl instead of finishing utena?
Kobayashi rule~

(All this bullying!)

Firehawk will watch bad anime like Monster Musume and Kiss Him Not Me for Yuu Kobayashi but won't watch good anime like Rakugo Shinjuu and Tiger Mask W for her. It's messed up!

I have no problem with the presence of sex in the narrative; I'm just not interested in watching graphic depictions of it.

Not my fault the show gave up on Kobayashi and went to the past in the first season!
(Also, Japanese wrestling anime??)

I would be happy if they got rid of the kissing altogether, since it just feels somewhat comical in context. Showing a leg writhe in passion is the furthest they'll go, but you get this tongue action that almost feels pornographic. lol

Yet somehow you're watching Scum's Wish. And you made time for an episode of Granblue Fantasy.

Which apparently doesn't apply for shows with her that people actually recommend you.

If you don't want to watch something, just say you're not gonna watch it instead of hiding behind arbitrary rules.

20 minutes a week is easy.

Besides, GBF was a scrub show. I think I spent 10 minutes watching the two episodes and I'm pretty sure I'd rather just spend the time grinding the actual game than to watch them animate the cutscenes that I've skipped. :p

Like I said, I watched the two or three episodes of the Rakugo show before it went into flashback mode and I just moved on.

I have a friend who hasn't even bothered to watch the two episodes yet, but is getting all the BDs because of the stupid serial codes.

I only watched the first episode of Scum's Wish, but was I supposed to feel something during that first almost sex scene? Embarrassed? Ashamed?

Because I didn't.

Gotta catch them all. lol
It's kind of amusing though... it probably has the most story of any mobage I play, even more than Love Live or Starlight Stage, and it's all voiced unlike Fire Emblem, but I don't care about any of it. I'm assuming the adaptation is basically for people like your friend (more shit to buy) or the random new person who might get tricked into playing the game.

You're supposed to feel their misery, I suppose. It's sad, awkward, pathetic sex.

Owarimonogatari 1
There's a lot to unpack in this one, but first and foremost: it's Ougi time. Honestly, if I didn't already like Hanekawa as much as I do I think Ougi would be in the running for my favourite monogatari character, first there's some Hanekawa in her in that she's capable of reading situations far better than most everybody else while also staying within her limits and not getting too far ahead of everyone else. Hanekawa does this by admitting she doesn't have all the answers, but Ougi does this by leading people, without making it clear that's what she's doing. That is until Araragi comes to the wrong conclusion, that merely telling the story of how he became so individualistic is enough, that talking about things is what's important. When in reality it's about finding the culprit, coming to terms with what really affected him: corruption of power and twisting of the truth (which is as salient a point as ever now). Then there's the similarities to Kaiki, they both like to hold their card close to their chest, but while Kaiki is content with not giving anything away if someone doesn't know what to look for, again Ougi is willing to make sure Araragi got to where she wanted him to go.

Anyways, ramblings aside I'm even more intrigued by what Ougi is going to offer (which I realize I say about every character but for real this time). She seems like quite the manipulator, though again that was pretty obvious coming in. It's just that I really want to see what exactly she wants out of everything, which the intro basically saying everything out of character for her is in character and she's basically a goddamn enigma makes me wonder how much she'll really show.

This is a peculiar question. Pretty much anytime you interact with any piece of art the creator is trying to make the viewer think/feel something.
