Tamako Market 01
Maybe my expectations were skewed from reading other impressions, but this was really good.
And vastly superior to anything else airing in this weakseason.
The episode works as an introduction of a greater cast and the scenes work well with each other.
To say something more elaborate I would have to watch the episode a couple of more times (I think I will at least once), however 2 scenes instantly come to my mind.
In the beginning we have Tamako throwing a gymnastic staff - and then fail to catch it.
Later a scene begins with Midori (main girl's friend) throwing and catching the staff perfectly, which tells us immediatley something about their relationship and even why Tamako was practicing earlier.
A more important scene plays in the record store where we learn about the early death of Tamako's mother.
In this scene the bird needs far longer than the viewer to realize the demise of the mother (he works to expose this information to the viewer, who like the bird comes into an unknown setting, especially as we have the reaction of the shop-owner who knows and is involved to read the situation and which also tells us more about Tamako's relation to the other cast and her character, which is what this episode is about ( it is like they really put thought into this)). However at the same time this delay of information for the bird works as the build-up to a punchline (I really connected with the humor) , in which I almost sense meta-humor on KyoAnis side, as they do not exaggerate the reaction of the poor poor girl who lost a parent (fuck you Chuunibyou) but that of the audience insert, who upon learning that literally throws herself at her in order to pity and reaffirm her (the reaction to moe, you know?), we see that Tamako has mostly learned to live with being an half orphan.
Which takes me to another scene (which is connected to this aspect of her personality) namely the announced departurer of the bird.
As the fear of departure is something very common in children who have experienced the death of a parent (unlike going mad moe halli galli (fuck chu two)) her extreme worry over the possibility of bird's death and relief when he is being saved are quite believable under this aspect.
Man I feel like I could write like this forever, as I really got the feeling that this is crafted with thought behind it, so writing a little more than usual is worthwhile.
I think I will make more posts about the bird being awesome (and holy fuck talking birds in my KyoAni) but one more thing.
What I didn't immediately get was what this is actually about.
In Hyouka we had Oreki monotone 2 lines in his head and it was instantly known: "aha, yep, who is gonna unfreeze the heart of this depressed fella?" (I really liked that too, having a strong sense of the conflict from the beginning)
We have Tamako's wish of taking her father's heritage and becoming a mochi maker, while at the same time we have a mysterious prince somewhere afar and the Romeo and Juliet thing going on with Beta (which are both kinda funny motives to spin into such a story with a girl protagonist, gets my approval)
Now this was long and as I am not a native speaker maybe pretty incomprehensible
so here the short version: :lol suck it haters :lol, this side is right side, pls b taste
