The Light of El Cantare
Sazae-san was the last and I think even that went digital not that long ago.

Should've figured that would have been the last, although Sazae-san is generally outside the scope of any anime discussion due to the various factors making it pretty much impossible to keep up with. Still good to know as a historical footnote!

Turn A was the last Gundam series to use cels iirc. No idea if that helps!

That aired at least partially in the general time period I'm thinking of. I suppose I'll refine my question to "what are anime that aired 2000 or later that used cel animation?" to truly narrow it down.

That sounds seriously gross.

They're pretty awesome, slightly thicker than a standard candybar when closed and a mode that lets them be used with the screen flipped around and closed facing out if you really need that hockey-puck form factor. Lots easier to type on on a train or in a car.

Not feeling the same vibes I had when watching K-On's and Chuu2's first episodes, animation is great and all but the characters themselves didn't appeal much, exception being the bird.

Speaking of the bird, he was the only redeemable aspect of the episode in terms of comedy which is largely due to "loltalkingbird" aspect of it.

Oh well, hopefully it picks up in the next few episodes, not giving upon the series yet.

I miss my old sammie flip-phone. If I am ever gonna give up my iPhone and go back to flip, this is the only one I want...

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Totally want that, why can't we get it here?

That and the unusable NERV phone.

Winter Backlog: Chunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! end

This is satisfying/heartwarming for all the wrong reasons, lol.

Overall, this wasn't a bad show. I'm glad I picked it back up after the incredibly subpar first episode. Fun was had and there was a pretty good character dynamic.

Final girl rankings: Kumin=Dekomori>Mom>Isshiki>Rikka>Toka>Nibutani.

Can't decide what's worse; calling Isshiki a girl, or putting Touka below Rikka.

I'm sorry to say... we cannot be friends...

You didn't watch Eden of the East?

I did when it aired but, honestly, I forgot almost everything about it as soon as it finished. I guess I vaguely remember those phones now, but it would have been cooler if some Japanese phone company was making badass-looking phones just for the hell of it.

Magi 05
I don't know about you Chet but I'm fine with blue Genie breast <3

This horrible season has resulted in me going back and watching shows I overlooked last season and Magi is growing on me :)

Tamako Market

Birds are disgusting, unsanitary creatures, and should be nowhere near any sort of food preparation.

Besides that, it was alright.

Tears and erotic tattooing? This is kind of a silly question but was this some sort of prototype Crying Freeman for Kazuo Koike?

Apparently part of the plot involves a porno flim company that had a Sly sex film as the company behind them forces celebrities to make them..

So the rapist gets his backstory told while the raped girl follows him around lamenting how she can never be in his heart. She also recognizes him as a pro football player by his running stance. wtf

Backstory is pretty bad too what with the young lovers who just met going to such extreme lengths for one another when he refuses a small fortune to perform in the porno and she's all about protecting his virtue against the villainous filmmakers. Back in the present in Brazil, he hires a female shipwright to build him a ship and she just so happens to want his dick too. The raped girl that loved him gets killed while shileding him from gunfire when the mafia fucking shows up. Later, when a river patrol stops them, the shipwright strips naked and proceed to argue with rapistguy to create the illusion of quarreling lovers. She finally gets that dick she wanted for her troubles while their boat gets inspected. The things you do for revenge.

This shit is so terrible. The whole male power fantasy is taken to such an extreme that Sword Art Online looks tame in comparison.

Oh man... you're like digging deep into the back of the vault aren't you?! I saw this one a few years back and was amazed at the use of rape as a romantic and plot device. Clearly more than one person involved in the production of the anime found this "okay". Truly fucked up shit.

Maybe my expectations were skewed from reading other impressions, but this was really good.
And vastly superior to anything else airing in this weakseason.

The episode works as an introduction of a greater cast and the scenes work well with each other.
To say something more elaborate I would have to watch the episode a couple of more times (I think I will at least once), however 2 scenes instantly come to my mind.

In the beginning we have Tamako throwing a gymnastic staff - and then fail to catch it.
Later a scene begins with Midori (main girl's friend) throwing and catching the staff perfectly, which tells us immediatley something about their relationship and even why Tamako was practicing earlier.

A more important scene plays in the record store where we learn about the early death of Tamako's mother.
In this scene the bird needs far longer than the viewer to realize the demise of the mother (he works to expose this information to the viewer, who like the bird comes into an unknown setting, especially as we have the reaction of the shop-owner who knows and is involved to read the situation and which also tells us more about Tamako's relation to the other cast and her character, which is what this episode is about ( it is like they really put thought into this)). However at the same time this delay of information for the bird works as the build-up to a punchline (I really connected with the humor) , in which I almost sense meta-humor on KyoAnis side, as they do not exaggerate the reaction of the poor poor girl who lost a parent (fuck you Chuunibyou) but that of the audience insert, who upon learning that literally throws herself at her in order to pity and reaffirm her (the reaction to moe, you know?), we see that Tamako has mostly learned to live with being an half orphan.

Which takes me to another scene (which is connected to this aspect of her personality) namely the announced departurer of the bird.
As the fear of departure is something very common in children who have experienced the death of a parent (unlike going mad moe halli galli (fuck chu two)) her extreme worry over the possibility of bird's death and relief when he is being saved are quite believable under this aspect.

Man I feel like I could write like this forever, as I really got the feeling that this is crafted with thought behind it, so writing a little more than usual is worthwhile.

I think I will make more posts about the bird being awesome (and holy fuck talking birds in my KyoAni) but one more thing.

What I didn't immediately get was what this is actually about.
In Hyouka we had Oreki monotone 2 lines in his head and it was instantly known: "aha, yep, who is gonna unfreeze the heart of this depressed fella?" (I really liked that too, having a strong sense of the conflict from the beginning)

We have Tamako's wish of taking her father's heritage and becoming a mochi maker, while at the same time we have a mysterious prince somewhere afar and the Romeo and Juliet thing going on with Beta (which are both kinda funny motives to spin into such a story with a girl protagonist, gets my approval)

Now this was long and as I am not a native speaker maybe pretty incomprehensible
so here the short version: :lol suck it haters :lol, this side is right side, pls b taste

The Light of El Cantare
Tamako Market 1:

Nothing about this knocked me out of my seat, but I watched this pretty tired so I'll wait until tomorrow before giving more thought to the episode and seeing if I have anything further to say. I was expecting something even more energetic and whimsical, but a grounded fantasy is fine too. I think I need an episode that's not mostly exposition before I know if I'm really feeling the whole thing.

I saw it all. It was a gushing review of Senran Kagura that's likely to be replaced by a shameful lie stating you watched Tamako Market instead.

Titty ninjas stole my post!
