Chihayafuru S2 1

I have a love hate relationship with this series. On the one hand, the main sweeping theme of the show is my ringtone and my alarm, so I am constantly reminded of the show whenever I wake up. On the other hand, it's stuck in sports show ghetto, plagued with rule explaining and boring ass games where the outcomes are almost always predictable based on the rubric that all sports shows/movies/books/whatever have to fit in.

I don't even necessarily have anything against the sport itself, but the sports junk is like the hour long cutscene you have to sit through in order to play the next 15 minute game section in MGS4. I understand needing to explain the rules again, on the off chance that there are new viewers or to remind people from S1 of how the game is played, but it's already giving me awful flashbacks to the S1 episodes where they would spend 5 episodes on a single game just to explain mechanics and strategy that ultimately have no real impact on the characters (hey, Chihaya has fast reflexes, but doesn't understand the strategy required to advance to the next level! Repeat 20 times!).

With a larger pool of characters to draw from (well, honestly - manga spoilers -
two characters
), I can see the show going one of two ways. Either they'll spend more time drawing out the characters as they did with the one new character this week, or they'll waste their time exposing the flaws in their karuta play.

And really, what gets me is that there is already a master of sports stories that Japanese authors can rip off. Why don't more people do it? Why do people choose to follow the boring shounen format that tickles the fancy of sport fetishists but does nothing for actual storytelling? It's not like I'm asking for Japanese Friday Night Lights. If every sports show has to feature baseball playing twins where one of them dies and the survivors have to deal with the guilt while trying to move on with their lives, I'd take a million clones of that formula over the one we constantly get over and over again.

But that's not even what bugs me about the show. It's this:
NEeC4l.jpg

And after watching Pet Girl fucking implode in episode 13, I feel like Taichi is just as much a piece of crap as Sorata. I hope he stays in the friendzone forever, because he doesn't deserve any better. And I'm not even saying this as a "Arata fan". Even if there were no other male characters in the show, these idiotic asexual male leads really are the bane of anime and manga. God, as nowheresville as Tonari went, at least Haru knew exactly what he wanted and went for it.

Of course, I'm making many assumptions based on episode one, but given that this show is 2 cours (at least according to MAL), I have no hope that it'll be all that different from season 1.

I guess I'm just not used to the sudden shifts in the sky.

I like to know that people read it, even if it isn't a whole lot of 'em.

I generally read all impressions, unless it's for something I've yet to watch, though that only really applies to the more plot-driven shows. Or you know, the thread unfortunately passes me by, as we can only read so much!
Although I'm sure that Nafe would probably argue against this!

Sentai is definitely impresdsing me with the amount of license pick ups. they have to be getting these at bargain prices to get so many. I can remember the ridiculous prices being asked of ADV and Geneon a few years back and thats why they dont exist anymore.
Sentai filmworks is a subsidiary of what used to be ADV, so they had to have learned from those mistakes and have a better business model. Still, they will keep me buying stuff so good on them.

Chihayafuru S2 1

I can totally get where you're coming from on this. It can really be frustrating to see these characters putz about and never actually make moves, or worse they pull the old "for her sake, I'll keep my emotions bottled up inside because that'll make me such a tragic honorable guy!" bullshit. I guess not every show can have Kaito from Ano Natsu.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
I claimed it. I think I deserve some right to choose the subtitle of my preference. Meh. I'll be more considerate this time around.

Remember what happened the last time you thought that? It can happen again.

Since this is the first episode of a sequel or second season I kind of like how they just jumped right into things with a real quick name highlight for each character rather than going for some kind of recap. It let things move along at a better pace and let the characters just focus on their antics.

After watching Smile PreCure! for so long now though, whenever I heard Misato Fukuen talking as Rika, I couldn't help but think of Miyuki. Either the show skipped something, even just for now, or because it's been so long since watching the first part, I didn't remember her teaming up with Yozora in messing with Sena. I liked that spotlight shot with their eyes covered. Someone almost needs to gif the two of them high fiving each other for when someone here comes up with a zinger sometime in the future.

Maybe a bit over the top for some but I kind of liked some of the sound effects to go along with the jokes, such as Sena getting "baited". The moo sound whenever a girl has a large bust is more iffy for me. Getting picked on for being busty again. :(

Personally I wasn't really as big on some of the fan service stuff such as Sena getting spanked. It would maybe come across that it should be more arousing if Kodaka was the one doing it but in this case with her father it just seemed weird. Although, I have to admit I was a bit amusingly shocked that the show went so far as to have Kodaka given a
condom handed to him.

Some of the other jokes were hit and miss with me. The bath scene near the end for example. The general idea was maybe kind of funny but some of the imagery, such as how the water comes out of the statues vases and what it implied was kind of funny and weird at the same time.

Kodaka's text call was kind of annoying though. At first it sounded like "You get mail" but then it almost sounded like "You get made." Either way, the longer it kept going off the more I found it was getting annoying.

Overall this first episode was up and down for me. Judging by the bust size of than nun in the next episode preview I guess it was
Sena dressing up as one or the other girl for some reason next episode.

Why do people choose to follow the boring shounen format that tickles the fancy of sport fetishists but does nothing for actual storytelling? It's not like I'm asking for Japanese Friday Night Lights.

Oh come on, you are. You always are, you mention it every time you mention sports shows, just like you dismiss loads of shows with "syfy" and "phantasy" :p

What is it you actually like about Chihayafuru, then? You seem to hate the sports cliches, and you really seem to dislike Taichi. What is it you find appealing about the show?

Because I suspect that's actually what most of the audience for it are really interested in, too.

The shounen sports cliches are a convenient, tension building framework on which to build the emotional content of the show - as with virtually any sports anime - and have universal appeal - to say that, say, Monkey Turn appeals only to speedboat "fetishists" seems a bit much, as even without specialist knowledge everyone can relate to competition, particularly if it's drawn/animated in a thrilling and interesting way. Chihayafuru's main distinguishing factor is that it's a josei sports show, and thus not only employs a different visual aesthetic to most sports shows but also means that the emotional content is more reflective of josei manga.

You're right that the show doesn't use sports as a backdrop to look at other issues, and that it's basically just presenting the same old stories but in a different way - one where the men and women are both beautiful and emotionally repressed, rather than whatever you get in shounen/seinen. But then that's why Chihayafuru is a smash hit manga that's run for 6 years or so, whereas Friday Night Lights had terrible ratings and ended up premiering its final few series on cable :p

On a less snippy note, however, I'll be interested to see what you think of March Comes In Like A Lion when it inevitably gets animated. Admittedly I'm a total fanboy for Chica Umino's work, but it's much more "a story about someone who plays sport" than "a story about the sport" in my mind. Probably not in the way you want it to be - it's heavy on introspection and relationship/personal drama, rather than examining wider issues - but it's not your typical sports story IMO.

I am failing to explain myself properly. What I disliked about it is that it doesn't feel like a "natural" introduction to the show, because if felt artificial. It has absolutely every element that the first episode of a show like this should have, obviously, but...
Artificial is descriptive. I noticed this with you talking about being "jolted out of" Hyouka and what not -- I don't get this "immersion" obsession that people have. Is it the fault of videogame culture?

I will leave you with a helpful quote on the matter to not seem flippant as well:
Luc Moullet said:
When one has nothing to start with, all excess, all forms of expression are good. The effects of The Tarnished Angels are totally gratuitous. Faulkner’s technique [in Pylon] presents and refines this same behavior, with inspiration alone dictating the tone. One couldn’t care less about verisimilitude. Attempts, variations, disparate efforts: The Tarnished Angels is basically a faithful adaptation through the utilization of the camera and the direction of actors. The whole film is made up of short tracks, usually lateral, almost invisible, the camera perpetually strolling five or six meters above the ground. Why? No reason. Just Sirk’s pleasure in making his camera move….In art, there is only artifice. Let us therefore praise an artifice that is cultivated without remorse, which consequently acquires a greater sincerity rather than artifice masked by itself as by others under hypocritical pretexts. The true is as false as the false; only the archi-false becomes true.
Of course, with animation, this is perhaps more applicable than ever.
It's becoming ever more clear that the issues I have with the first episode are much more about me than anything that the production team have done. I watched the episode thinking about how it was constructed rather than actually enjoying it. Why that is I will hopefully cover a bit below...
Why not give it a rewatch and try to give it a fair shot?

What I meant, frankly, is "not so ridiculously cheery". It's not the same thing as substance, and I should never have used the word because it's incredibly dismissive to works with a happy tone.
I see. Do you prefer sad things?

I guess if you find it tedious to read people saying things like that then it must be very hard for you to read anyone's posts on anime, because virtually everyone has an emotional response to entertainment that's different from a purely rational one. Rationally, I think pretty much every element of the episode is as well crafted as it can be - but emotionally, it didn't really appeal to me.
There are some posters whose posts I enjoy reading.

Why does it not emotionally appeal to you?

Haganai NEXT Episode 1Either the show skipped something, even just for now, or because it's been so long since watching the first part, I didn't remember her teaming up with Yozora in messing with Sena.

Yeah, that bothered me as well. I was like "When did this alliance take place?"

Maybe a bit over the top for some but I kind of liked some of the sound effects to go along with the jokes, such as Sena getting "baited". The moo sound whenever a girl has a large bust is more iffy for me. Getting picked on for being busty again. :(

It's really dumb. I mean, we get it, she's super busty. The moo sound effect is just stupid overkill and demeaning. :(

I think it's a new character, but generally agree with your feelings of this episode.

Despite the occasionally atrocious British voice acting and the hilariously terrible synth-rock soundtrack, this is still pretty excellent times... horrific animation aside

To be quite honest I dont give a damn about the relationships in Chihayafuru. Its typical shoujo go nowhere-ness. Im in it for the Cute of Kana and Chihaya and the Karuta game stuff. Plus the music and the overall feeling the show gives off. Its soooo addictive.

Sometimes you guys can be real jerks.
