Smile precure! 01

Oh god what have I done.

I read reviews in the thread and decide to give Smile a try... and I like it and don't know why.

Now that I'm on board I want to see Yayoi and Nao in action.

Awesome! Get on the Ultra Happy hype train!

Hey animegaf. I just wanted to say that the australian channel ABC3 has decided to air Puella Magi Madoka Magica this coming year.
Now some context. ABC3 is a channel aimed squarely at the children's department. They have aired anime in the past but only ones like Fruits Basket, Vampire Nights or Host Club so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I mean, it has little girls in it... just how crazy can it be?

Written by Urobouchi Gen who is known for killing characters and dark stories. You tell me man!

I hope you enjoy it. Yayoi is mind-melting adorable. Just a warning.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Kids love stories about friendship and overcoming evil. What better way to cap off the new year than with one of Japan's most popular stories embracing those themes? I'm sure ABC3 is well aware of what their audience will accept, they're not going to bite off more than they can chew.

Well played.

Kyoto Animation did it again, the influx of scout corps from the expeditionary force is still continuing... the real arrival of the hordes will be soon in there:

Hmm, not sure yet. I might have to ask the audience on this one...
Come on! NICE Day (ナイスの日), "NA-I-SU" Day...

... bah! And I thought you guys liked The Girl Who Leapt Through Time...

Awesome avatar, and amazing gif.
The return of the Fidelio Lady! Yeah... Geneijin, be sure to make a come back for the vania600 pin-up girl and her MDR-CD900ST headphones as well!
Beautiful recording equipment there, but a PCM-D1 would have been even cooler to achieve a maximum "snob" effect.

You forgot ">mfw I have no face"...
because I remember you used to have an avatar... isn't it?

Oh, I get it now! I didn't realize you were going that direction with your wordplay, I was thinking along different lines. Sorry. :(
I also forgot about that in relation to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Well I've made a note of both now. ;)

Ugh, this show has been on a downward spiral since episode 12, although to give episode 12 credit, it was more of the kinect crap being such a cringe worthy and painful thing to watch, but it was a device that progressed things along despite being poor in execution.

13 and 14 however, who hit the fucking reset button? You could replace these episodes with the corresponding earlier episodes in the first half and you couldn't tell a damn lick of difference between them, and Sorata's pissing me off that I hope this show gets a forever alone ending with him so it's his Kanna tears I'll be licking, the way he stops having a chip on his shoulder towards Shiina the moment
he passes the preliminary stage of the game design competition,
makes him come off as an abusive husband who only stops beating his wife when he gets what he wants.

Right now I'm at the #toleratewatch stage, but if they don't do something other than tell the same cycle of a storyline just to fill the next 10 episodes, the stupid OCD side of me is going to complete this in #hatewatch o' vision. Fucking halfway point. >_<
You basically are at the same place I am. lol

I'm still extremely conflicted about Endless Eight, because I do like it.
Endless Eight is a gimmick that only works once. The impact is lost on subsequent viewings.

The Light of El Cantare
The GitS Arise announcement doesn't seem to specify what type of work it is - the announcement just says that it's a "new anime work".

Unsurprisingly, it's most likely produced by Production IG - the director, Kazuchika Kise, is a long time animation director at PIG. Scripting is apparently by Tow Ubakata, of Mardock Scramble "fame" (and also Chevalier D'Eon with PIG and Fafner/Heroic Age with Xebec). Given that Mr Kise works typically on films for PIG I would guess this is likely to be another film, rather than a TV series?

The Yaraon report on this suggests that music will be by Cornelius, but the photo of the announcement that's floating around doesn't show his or Ubakata's names in the staff listing - perhaps that's come from somewhere like 2ch with proper advance access to the announcement.

Man, Ubukata being involved in any capacity would just about be hype-killing for me. Having seen Fafner and the first two Mardock Movies, well...let's just say the man shouldn't be allowed near science fiction ever again.

:cuilan is wholesome stuff. What are you talking about?
Wish he'd time them better though. He only seems to post them when I'm at work. I can't be seen admiring images at work. I have to work.

No, cuilan is worse. At least Izayoi doesn't spam the IRC with his stuff.
You call it spam, the rest call it generosity.

cuilan links are wholesome fun for the whole family
If anything, your links are the ones that could cause the mind to break HA HA HA.

That's a pretty extreme conclusion to come to from a minor franchise. Did you really come to that from Nogizaka, or did you just use Nogizaka as an excuse to post something you were already thinking?

In any case, getting tired of a franchise that's no longer providing enjoyable stimulation doesn't require getting tired of its medium. Look at all the ex-Final Fantasy fans on GAF.

There's a slang term in Japanese, "owakon":
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%...82%B3%E3%83%B3
"Owakon" = "owatta kontentsu" = "content whose lifetime is over"
It means something that was popular at once point, but has since been abandoned by most people as they got bored with it.
Well, it's more Haruka in particular. But I guess shows I don't care about, like the two kugiloli shows (Zero and Shana) just ended with a whimper as well.

If it was a simple matter of fans being bored, they wouldn't bother animating new episodes in the first place and just keep the conclusion to the LN/manga ghetto. Hundreds of harem shows only get one cour and end on a cliffhanger that doesn't hint any kind of conclusion, because that's just how it is nowadays.

Then again, I'm just pulling the aging out theory out of the blue. There's probably some medium of the general fan aging out of the anime market and the hardcore fan being bored with the property that keeps a franchise popular enough for a final season but not popular enough for that final season to have any sales. It's just an interesting phenomenon that I don't really know how to explain.

Well, one theory would be that Haruka and other harems from even a few years ago have become outdated in some way. Either the girl tropes are unpopular, the art design looks dated (and Haruka does look like jank), or something else entirely.

And the other theory...
I haven't read the novels so I dunno how well the anime represents them, but it seemed like an episodic character comedy to me. So I would generally look at it the same way I'd look at The Simpsons. It may end eventually but it's probably not specifically building to an ending. If it gets boring, you stop reading. Except for those poor saps who are too invested to quit, like Bleach fans.
I'd bring up here. So in that quote, I was speaking of harems in general. The fact that harem shows only need to last one cour and offer no conclusion seems to point to the ADD nature of the anime fan that jumps from one bandwagon to the next.

If all you need is a tsundere girl and a kuudere girl and an onee-san and whatever else is there, and every season there's a new show that offers those tropes to you with new characters, there's really no reason to stick to a single show after you've experienced those tropes. If the actual characters and the story becomes disposable in the face of trope-whoring, then that might explain why so many harems are unresolved in anime form and why people don't really care.

(Well, ignoring the fact that anime is an ad for the source material any way).

I dunno, I just find the whole idea of legacy franchises interesting, especially since the time to death is so fast. I mean, there was a two year gap between the Batman movies and people were happy to wait, so why are anime fans that much more fickle when it comes to their nerd porn?

Hence the conflicted comment! I admire the fact that they even attempted it.
I think it's fair to recognize its important when it aired but see it as a gimmick after the fact. It's like whenever an American TV show does a "live" episode. Watching it live, it is supposed to be exciting because they can screw up at any time (it's really not). Watching it on DVD, it looks like a lower budget version of the real show. I rewatched some of The West Wing and the live debate was a bit of a mess at points. Especially the parts where the audience were supposed to react to the candidates.

Does it even work if you didn't watch it when it was airing? I haven't watched S2 of Haruhi yet and were I to watch it now, I would more than likely skip to the end of E8 because as far as I'm aware the differences between each of the episodes is negligible(?)

Oh man, I forgot to bring up how stupid it was that the only way to
successfully
confess to Jin was to do this.

Infact the whole Jin x Misaki part never made sense,
and it got resolved on the spot for no reason either.
If it was supposed to draw parallels with Shiina and MC, then it failed miserably at making any sense at all.

Endless Eight is a gimmick that only works once. The impact is lost on subsequent viewings.

Of course it loses impact because it's deeply ingrained into the mind by halfway.

It's been so long since I watched Fafner...I remember it not doing much for me, but I don't really remember why outside of the Hirai character designs. However, the BD collection's only $30 on Amazon so I thought about picking it up for the hell of it and giving it another shot.

I just finished Shiki after watching the final three episodes today and it is certainly one of my favorite anime.

It is essentially a horror tragedy and it handles several things quite well A) atmosphere B) it makes the monsters to be scary at least some of the time. C) the tragedy is quite well done and the scale of tragedy and the events that are happening is also impressive D) comes off as something quite unique. E) focuses on multiple characters and provides interesting differing perspectives of character, morality and coping with the situation F) It is an interesting morally story. G)
the story does not shy at all from killing characters.
H) has succesfull and focused world building.

The biggest problem is that incoherent priest character he was not handled that well, his character is just not that interesting to the extend that it makes any sense. I was also slightly disappointed by the ending. And I guess some of the attempt for sympathy for the antagonist although does work somewhat, at the same time it also seems kind of forced and does not work entirely.
