Escaflowne Movie

9618-620x-escaflowne-main.jpg

I FUCKING LOOOVED IT!! The animation, soundtrack, story re-envisioning, and action were stellar all around! It's the perfect companion to the series. It doesn't step on the series' feet, nor does it plot the same story beats that we already know. The background art is to die for (it really is), and the redesigns of the characters are great! The world was dripping in rich history. I may have preferred to see this as a four part OVA to fill in the story a little more and flesh out some characters, but as it is, it was quite spectacular! I also enjoyed how the armors were partially organic requiring a more direct blood oath from the pilot. If I have any complaint it's that the final conflict is a bit anti-climactic, and a few of the side characters are washed over, but other than that this was just excellent. I love this whole series so much.

Did I mention dat soundtrack?? DAT soundtrack!

Yay! ^_^ Loved the movie, they really did a good job of boiling Escaflowne down to its essence considering it doesn't have the length of the TV series.

Love Live! Knee Blush Project 02:

Why are their knees blushing? WHY?

Happy Birthday Mio. Also, your avatar hot damn! o_o

Pretty funny episode with the second skit being quite more funny than the first. Poor Future Neji
being a woman
They should have gone all the way with Kabuto being successful and made it for the next episode

Space Style Ninjutsu and Internet Style Ninjutsu were so good.

Ugh, this show has been on a downward spiral since episode 12, although to give episode 12 credit, it was more of the kinect crap being such a cringe worthy and painful thing to watch, but it was a device that progressed things along despite being poor in execution.

13 and 14 however, who hit the fucking reset button? You could replace these episodes with the corresponding earlier episodes in the first half and you couldn't tell a damn lick of difference between them, and Sorata's pissing me off that I hope this show gets a forever alone ending with him so it's his Kanna tears I'll be licking, the way he stops having a chip on his shoulder towards Shiina the moment
he passes the preliminary stage of the game design competition,
makes him come off as an abusive husband who only stops beating his wife when he gets what he wants.

Right now I'm at the #toleratewatch stage, but if they don't do something other than tell the same cycle of a storyline just to fill the next 10 episodes, the stupid OCD side of me is going to complete this in #hatewatch o' vision. Fucking halfway point. >_<

Wandering Son 2

Well, it turns out that even more stuff happened before this show started. I feel like I'm pretty much caught up now, though.

I'm teaching in a middle school now, and a lot of what happens here rings pretty true to how my students act. I'm actually really impressed with how complete and lively the classroom seems in this show. The one aspect shown here which I didn't know too much about (which is a big element in this episode) is the senpai-kouhai relationship. I knew that greetings were important, but I wasn't sure why. This episode doesn't illuminate that, because it's assumed cultural knowledge. But it's still interesting.

ileldM8zbdiuT.jpg

This whole scene was barely relevant to the plot, but it was beautiful and I loved it.

I like how the show's developing. I usually hate interpersonal conflicts like the falling out between the two girls (parts of Toradora are frustrating me for this reason), but it's handled pretty deftly here. Even though I barely know Takatsuki and Chiba, I understood why both felt the way they did, and their reconciliation made sense.

Even at this early stage, I'm awed by how Wandering Son approaches adolescent problems without simplifying them, or turning them into melodrama. They're treated sympathetically and evenly. At this point, I feel much more invested in this cast than I did after the first time I watched the bewildering first episode.

The GitS Arise announcement doesn't seem to specify what type of work it is - the announcement just says that it's a "new anime work".

Unsurprisingly, it's most likely produced by Production IG - the director, Kazuchika Kise, is a long time animation director at PIG. Scripting is apparently by Tow Ubakata, of Mardock Scramble "fame" (and also Chevalier D'Eon with PIG and Fafner/Heroic Age with Xebec). Given that Mr Kise works typically on films for PIG I would guess this is likely to be another film, rather than a TV series?

The Yaraon report on this suggests that music will be by Cornelius, but the photo of the announcement that's floating around doesn't show his or Ubakata's names in the staff listing - perhaps that's come from somewhere like 2ch with proper advance access to the announcement.

Speaking of shit that I finished to completion, that final episode of Nogizaka Haruka finally came out. I totally forgot there was a Kugiloli:

I feel like this show is weird because of how harems seem to have evolved since this franchise was conceived. It has everything that nerds like (bland harem protagonist, rich otaku super shy and naive girl, a harem that involves every type of woman AND a main love triangle, many many nerd references to both various franchise and to events like Comiket), which is probably why it was successful at the time, but I guess that just isn't enough to satisfy nerds now. Given how hard these OVAs have bombed, it seems that only older fans are buying these... and probably just so they can put them on the shelf next to the last discs they bought a couple years ago.

I wonder what it is though. Have harems somehow changed in the last four years? Or is anime fandom just super churny and there's a magic age of the sadlife anime nerd where once you hit a certain age, you have to drop anime entirely and move on with your life?

If that's the case, it just makes sense that the original fans of Haruka have grown up and moved on, leaving only the super hardcore nerds to see the franchise limp to its ending (which, I still feel is a fucking miracle that this thing even ended... someone must have done dirty things to get this to happen). Maybe hard core nerd shows only have a lifespan of three or four years before the fans start families/get jobs/whatever and a new generation of fans moves on to the next big thing?

This realization makes working in the anime industry even worse than I thought it was... since unless you are Ghibli, there doesn't seem to be any kind of long tail that you can consistently rely on.

That's a pretty extreme conclusion to come to from a minor franchise. Did you really come to that from Nogizaka, or did you just use Nogizaka as an excuse to post something you were already thinking?

In any case, getting tired of a franchise that's no longer providing enjoyable stimulation doesn't require getting tired of its medium. Look at all the ex-Final Fantasy fans on GAF.

There's a slang term in Japanese, "owakon":
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/オワコン
"Owakon" = "owatta kontentsu" = "content whose lifetime is over"
It means something that was popular at once point, but has since been abandoned by most people as they got bored with it.

To continue playing at standing in for Articalys, ANN reports another LN adaptation in the works, "I Didn't Become A Hero, So I Reluctantly Looked For A Part-Time Job".

sibuyu_top.jpg

ANN summarise the plot as:

ANN said:
The story revolves around Rauru, a boy who did not become a Hero, since the demon lord was already defeated just before his Hero exams. His dreams dashed, Rauru spends his days working at a magic shop in the capital. One day, a part-time job seeker appears at the shop with an amazing résumé:

Name: Fino
Previous Occupation: Demon Lord Heir
Motive: Because my father was defeated

The work comedy revolves around this former Hero-in-training and the daughter of the demon lord.

Sounds a bit like that Working Demon anime or whatever it's called that's airing next season. Except more moe.

If you think it's a question of interest, why do you think people got bored with Haruka? Or is it a case where the porn is in the tropes, not in the literal "climax" of the series? All you need is just a season of some girl being shy, shouting BAKA, being cold, and being older (lol) and that's enough for most people? I suppose if you're just trope shopping, you don't really care what the author wants anyway.
I haven't read the novels so I dunno how well the anime represents them, but it seemed like an episodic character comedy to me. So I would generally look at it the same way I'd look at The Simpsons. It may end eventually but it's probably not specifically building to an ending. If it gets boring, you stop reading. Except for those poor saps who are too invested to quit, like Bleach fans.

That seems pretty generic hare-

AOTY 2013 here we come.

Ha! Similar to what I experienced with Girls und Panzer, which I rightly (or wrongly) went with, if only because it reminded me of Valkyria Chronicles in some fashion.

Chet, I wouldn't go outside this thread or the K-ON! thread with that avy. People might get the wrong right idea.

But what if he wants to spread the good word? He must!

The Yaraon report is not the original source I believe: http://ieee80211abgn.blog58.fc2.com/blog-entry-2696.html

There clearer details about the announcement here. It is basically an announcement of an announcement from Young Magazine. The press conference where more details will be announced, the trailer will be screened, etc is scheduled to be on Feb 21st at 9pm in Japan, and it'll be streamed live too. Since Ubakata is listed for series composition and script, it's definitely a series. The only question is whether it's an OVA series or TV series. I'll say that TV series is more likely here because if it is a smaller production it wouldn't need a supervising director and a director. Plus, I believe Ubakata said he has two TV series starting in 2013, and this would be number two after the Fafner announcement.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I should have known you'd have more information from somewhere! I couldn't see Ubakata's credit in the scans I'd seen so I wasn't confident making a judgement about what work he would be doing.

I had a look at the Fafner page the other day and couldn't work out if it was a TV series or another film, so thanks for the confirmation on that. The enduring popularity of Fafner in Japan has always surprised me, given its comparatively tepid reception in English-speaking fandom.

If I'm wrong about the Fafner stuff, don't kill me! I too am really surprised that somehow it is popular enough to keep getting more releases. I'm fairly sure I read that it's intended to be a new TV series, but it seems that's not confirmed yet...

Girl must be Tsundere or a Yandere.

Hey animegaf. I just wanted to say that the australian channel ABC3 has decided to air Puella Magi Madoka Magica this coming year.
Now some context. ABC3 is a channel aimed squarely at the children's department. They have aired anime in the past but only ones like Fruits Basket, Vampire Nights or Host Club so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I mean, it has little girls in it... just how crazy can it be?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Kids love stories about friendship and overcoming evil. What better way to cap off the new year than with one of Japan's most popular stories embracing those themes? I'm sure ABC3 is well aware of what their audience will accept, they're not going to bite off more than they can chew.

My keyboard is now covered with the same fragrant wonderful tea I was drinking just now, thanks.

Smile precure! 01

Oh god what have I done.

I read reviews in the thread and decide to give Smile a try... and I like it and don't know why.

Now that I'm on board I want to see Yayoi and Nao in action.
