I guarantee you they arent licensing anything for nearly the amount it used to cost. The Japanese companies were making back the cost of production just with Us licensing alone. They fleeced the fuck out of them.
Oh yeah, they are much less extortionate now that they realised there is no money for them to grab. It's still not really that cheap though! Especially if you're licensing every show under the sun.

I paid much more than that for Chrono Crusade, but it did come with extra stuff on the discs and a pretty artbox. So many pretty artboxes. I go nuts for them and companies are still delivering, although in more compact packaging. Really not fond of the super savings collections entirely stripped of any personality or collector value except for the sake of saving space.

My big ADV investment was in Evangelion...bought each individual volume at full price, but the Platinum release did have some good packaging and nice extras. Wish they would have licensed End of Evangelion instead of Manga.

And yeah, those S.A.V.E. collections from Funi do kind of suck.

ADV used to be ENORMOUS. They started the whole anime licensing movement in the US. they were the top dog. the big enchilada. The colossus of clout. They had an empire, and the whole motherfucking thing came crashing down.

There was also the whole live action Eva business to go along with it. I kind of actually wanted to see it happen, especially after seeing the concept art the WETA had done.

IIRC, the majority of ADV's biggest titles were all Gonzo productions, so what goes around comes around. Because Gonzo relied so heavily on foreign investment via licensing to support their massive expansion in production, when the well in the US dried up, they went bust too.

I bought a ton of gonzo shows too. that stung when they went under.

The bigger they are the harder they fall. Eh they still do it under Sentai though that doesn't mean they are now any wiser or making money looking at what they keep licensing!

I still wonder every time Sentai goes on a licensing blitz, where all that money comes from.

Sentai isnt exactly licensing upper echelon anime. they are probably getting many licenses super cheap. Croisee and Cat Planet cuties for example werent exactly hot commodities.
NISA is probably blasting through money though.

Maybe not the biggest shows, but licensing almost half of a season's new anime definitely seem like it would cost a pretty penny.

Also, Funi has Cat Planet Cuties which did amazingly well for them, IIRC.

I also think that NISA in most cases is just picking up the scraps of stuff other companies didn't want to license.

I would figure that Sentai has learned from past mistakes and has a business model that works for them, though I suspect their profit margins are still thin at best.

Senyuu going to have more awesome OVA episodes.

This spring, Bandai Visual will ship the Blu-ray Disc/DVD volumes for the Senyū fantasy battle comedy anime with two original video anime (OVA) episodes.

The first volume will ship on April 24 with the first six shorts from the television adapatation of Robinson Haruhara's manga. It will also have the brand-new OVA episode "1.1" with the "Yūsha, Nagurareru" (Hero, Beaten) and "Nise-Panda no Seitai" (The Habits of Fake Panda) stories. The extras include a ticket application form for an August 31 event at Tokyo's Nippon Seinenkan hall (only in the first copies of the volume), an exclusive sound drama CD, an eight-page booklet, and audio commentaries.

The second volume will arrive on May 28 with television episodes 7-13, the brand-new OVA "Shitsuji-chō no Tabi Sono 1" (The Head Steward's Journey I), a collection of promotional videos, another exclusive sound drama CD, an eight-page booklet, and audio comentaries. The Blu-ray version of both volumes will add a feature that lets viewers watch the episodes with Niconico's signature scrolling comments.

Ok, the NicoNico features sounds pretty amusing.

They also got licenses for Ghibli movies like Grave of the Fireflies, granted not Ghibli's largest property but it can't have been too cheap

I really dont know their business models, but the companies arent so gung ho on pulling the tirgger on every show quickly anymore. Plus the japanese companies have other methods of revenue now, selling licenses to Hulu, Netflix, Crunchyroll. In some cases, they seem to spread it to three or four channels for the same license, and that no doubt drives costs down.
Anime is no longer a super hot commodity (and I would argue that it never was even in the 00's) so the prices demanded are not even close to what they used to be. there are no more bleach's or Naruto's or DBZ's lately. those wells are drying up. Companies have to spread success out in as many directions as possible, but this time without overreaching. They have many more options though.

That's debatable. Well, in a way, everything is debatable but you know what I mean. Out of their entire catalogue of titles I only enjoyed Red Garden, Gankutsuou and Kaleido Star which certainly leaves them with far, far more misses than hits.

It's a good thing a lot of those shows got rescued and rereleased. Plenty on that list I still haven't seen.

Bleh. Not really feeling this series. It's too absurd for me to really get that invested, but it's not absurd enough to work as a comedy. None of the characters really stand out to me, their designs aren't very appealing to the eye, and overall the show doesn't really look that good. Tank battles are OK though.
Overall I like GuP--it was my favorite show from fall, and the tank matches are exciting--but I basically agree on the bolded. I didn't really get attached to the characters, and although I like Fumikane's original illustrations, the anime character design isn't anything special.
The show needed something more to bump it up past my enthusiasm line.

Kaleido Star, Last Exile, Gankutsuou, Welcome to the NHK would be my favorite 4 Gonzo shows by far and they all came in a nice tight little 3 year window along with some other enjoyable ones mixed inside there as well.

It's been all downhill since then.

I still say Shangri La is a highly underappreciated Gonzo anime.
It had a lot of flaws and a complex story but I was hooked. It is a really fascinating show and it took some risks.

I'll certainly check it out. I appreciate shows that take some chances

I can't say I am wild about this design. It just seems kind of...boring I suppose. Which isn't to say that the Ghost in the Shell universe should get invaded by Jo Jo designers but it would be nice for her to have a bit of character to her.

I tend to agree, though I'm interested to see some other character designs.

Gonzo's bad CG was only one reason I didn't like about them. Outside of Gankutsuo I hated their pacing. They always front loaded their quality and it would take a nosedive soon after. Every Gonzo show I watched sans Gankutsuo I never made it past the first few episodes. Stopped FMP after 8, Chrno Crusade after the same, Last Exile after 3, Hellsing after 4, RomeoXJuliet after 2. One exception couldn't save the studio for me. :-/

While designs are, of course, an important factor in my enjoyment of a title I am far more interested to hear details about the staff involved with this project, what kind of story they intend to cover and so forth. In all honesty it seems like the Ghost in the Shell property is one that has already been explored quite seriously in the various anime incarnations that it's had so I am intrigued to learn if/how they intend to avoid retreading old ground.

Is this a new film in the series, something new or another bit of nonsense like that additional episode in the DVD/BD box thing?

How they've changed from Futakoi Alternative...

I thought Futakoi Alternative was a neat show :(

I loathed and detested everything about Futakoi. Futakoi Alternative managed to somehow do something interesting with a series that was anything but.

It's a feature film telling the final story in KnK, or at least the latest one, called Fukuin Mirai (Future Gospel) - Recalled Out Summer. It's going to be fucking hype!!!

I even enjoyed Polyphonica. you know, the show with the QUALITY VAN CHASE.

It's a brand new movie based on the latest story written for KnK which takes place after the previous stories iirc.

You make it sound far creepier than it is. Perhaps they just feel like they have nothing to contribute right now which is something I have certainly felt in the past.

Some people in the main thread were speculating that this takes place before Motoko joins Section 9, which sounds like a reasonable assumption. It explains why she looks and dresses so different from how she's usually depicted, anyways. It'd be a good way to re-enter the world of GitS and avoiding the pitfalls of retreading old territory.

Not that I have high hopes for this new show's quality. I'd still prefer a third season to SAC.

The Yaraon report is not the original source I believe: http://ieee80211abgn.blog58.fc2.com/blog-entry-2696.html

There clearer details about the announcement here. It is basically an announcement of an announcement from Young Magazine. The press conference where more details will be announced, the trailer will be screened, etc is scheduled to be on Feb 21st at 9pm in Japan, and it'll be streamed live too. Since Ubakata is listed for series composition and script, it's definitely a series. The only question is whether it's an OVA series or TV series. I'll say that TV series is more likely here because if it is a smaller production it wouldn't need a supervising director and a director. Plus, I believe Ubakata said he has two TV series starting in 2013, and this would be number two after the Fafner announcement.

The GitS Arise announcement doesn't seem to specify what type of work it is - the announcement just says that it's a "new anime work".

Unsurprisingly, it's most likely produced by Production IG - the director, Kazuchika Kise, is a long time animation director at PIG. Scripting is apparently by Tow Ubakata, of Mardock Scramble "fame" (and also Chevalier D'Eon with PIG and Fafner/Heroic Age with Xebec). Given that Mr Kise works typically on films for PIG I would guess this is likely to be another film, rather than a TV series?

The Yaraon report on this suggests that music will be by Cornelius, but the photo of the announcement that's floating around doesn't show his or Ubakata's names in the staff listing - perhaps that's come from somewhere like 2ch with proper advance access to the announcement.
Oh wait, here it is. I thought this information had been deposited somewhere but I couldn't find it immediately. Consider my hype for this project to be non-existent based on the pedigree of the staff and they kind of work that that Production I.G. has been putting out lately. I know some people may find that reasoning a little ridiculous but it's what's helped my expectations in check before.

K-On! Movie

OrBTw.jpg

Indeed, it is.

I was watching this movie again purely out of boredom, and damn it looks nice. The animation is so constant and lively, there is almost constant movement, and with great care put into the character acting. Everything down to the colour is crafted with so much care it's hard to believe. I love the colour palettes they use for representing different positions of the sun.

This movie is probably the perfect K-On! experience. It's everything that makes the series good condensed into 2 hours of fun and gorgeous visuals. The 'plot' of it ties perfectly into the main narrative of season 2 filling some gaps, yet the whole movie feels relaxed and somewhat pointless, like a pure healing show, and allows the cast to be at their best.
The script is pretty solid for K-On!, with some nice jokes and running gags and entertaining interactions throughout, the OST is as good as ever and I have to say it is pretty neatly storyboarded. That scene near the end focusing on the girls' legs is pure Yamada going overboard, but it works very well because of the animation and the designs. I could picture the expressions they were making by only watching their feet move and make gestures, and hearing their voices. How they did the repeat of S2's climax with the song was pretty nice, putting cuts of the girls rehearsing the song over the sound of them playing it for Azusa. I don't know if Yamada or Ishihara did that, but props to whoever came up with it.

The movie also has one of my favourite scenes from the whole franchise, the opening scene with the false dispute they were having. It's so refreshing to see these kind of things, it's a clever use of exposition with the characters all shouting each others' gimmicks and bits of characterization while maintaining a natural flow, and making it actually entertaining thanks to the animation of their expressions. Other scene that stood out to me was the one near the end with the girls running and yelling on the rooftop, following Yui's lead. Liked how they used the camera there.
Another part that stood out to me was when they get into the taxi at night and it starts snowing. They handled the lighting so well in there, and also the sound, the voices. The moods the movie can create are generally very immersive, but that one in the taxi especially felt as if I was inside the car too. Compared to the only other taxi scene I remember of them (the one with Koizumi and Kyon back in Haruhi 2006), it shows they have improved. It really does.

But to be frank, the sole thing I enjoy the most of this movie is the level of detail of the animation and background art. Seriously, there were some mind blowing London landscapes!
KWrEv.jpg
f28Pe.jpg
FAEuJ.jpg

Some nice lighting and cloud-porn in there too.

This is definitely Kyoani's biggest effort as of yet, as it surpasses Disappearance by a lot. It is also their one and only work animated fully in HD (1080p; their latest series are animated at 955p), and I'm thankful for that. That level of sakuga porn needs to be experienced in true high res.
I await the day they decide to put this amount of effort and resources into something again (preferably by Takemoto. Please let Takemoto have his movie! ;_;)

Oh I agree with you there. While it's by no means amazing, to be able to go from such a hideously bland harem premise and turn it into something that's actually really enjoyable is brilliant. Plus it has the VA's for Miria and Miyako in it so that's a big plus.

I was meaning more in how they've evolved from what they did on that to the Kara no Kyoukai movies.

Fun fact I lurked animegaf for like 2 months before I made my first post. I thought the place was creepy and didn't want to associate myself there while I spent my time posting in sports threads and some other places.

My first few posts only came because duckroll kept going on and on about how ufotable sucked and how fate/zero would suck.

Crazy how things change!
