Remember when the Key dude was whining that KyoAni turned them down for Angel Beats (Little Busters?).

The only thing he said was that the the project they turned them down for was a Kadokawa property (Hyouka, it seems).

I wish more studios had KyoAni's balls to turn down projects they know they can't do.

Its easy to turn down project for another big producer.

Well my prediction turned out wrong but at least the alternative to it would at least give me a greater appreciation for the residents hard work, dedication, and ingenuity. I kind of wish they threw out the line about "Sakurasou is not Sakurasou without you" as it felt as if it was the only thing that was missed in this episode, especially the big discovery which was brilliant. Hopefully its not the last time we see and it can have something added to it.

Anyway the episode did have probably the one thing I hate in all these romances out of what I typically encounter.
Why in the world do characters just give up? Aoyama had the perfect opportunity to finally declare her love. She was like right there about to say it with his full attention and she just suddenly says something about appreciating him. It would have been far more compelling and intense if she said it. I wonder what would have happened, as when he said Love to Mashiro it didnt feel as if it carried the same weight as Aoyama's towards him. Giving up is usually always not good.

Depending on next episode would be a solid or rather exceptional final arc of this anime, cant wait to see how they get out of this pickle.

War in the Pocket 5

Wow, this got pretty emotional. I mean, last episode had the hilarious "GALCIA" picture and then the tragic, violent deaths of Bernie's entire team. Now we're in a race against the clock to destroy a Gundam to save a colony from nuclear holocaust. It's strange to see Zeons as good guys and to see destroying a Gundam as a heroic objective, but it works. Amazing how well they can work this story in just 6 episodes.

I'm saying that the story works well within the game but really poorly when taken as a written work by its own merits.

Eh, I think it's a fine story. Not even in a "fine for a game" way. It just kind of follows a formula that would need some tweaking when brought to other mediums. As Geneijin said, it was poorly adapted.

You're far too kind - I wouldn't say so... Well, maybe the really bad ones.

Yes. First you must focus all of your dreams, hopes, and desires. Channel your innermost shameful fantasies and lewd acts. Hold on to those dreams and feel your passion surge through your bloodstream and out of your pen, like a wild stampede.

Sakurasou - 22

Okay so if Shiina was your typical harem protag
the train would have blocked Sorata's confession,
this opens the door for Aoyama to swoop in and elope with Shiina leaving us with an acceptable end.

Pet Girl 22

At this point, I almost expect Sakurasou to be saved by some magical deus ex machina to be revealed in the last episode by virtue of the writer being creatively bankrupt.

Shiina using her famous paintings' lunch money to buy out Sakuraso
would be within the perimeters of the show.

I'll echo what I said last week, this show's drama is lost on me completely because it's been repeated in the same way so many times it's pissing me off, the sad part is that it does have a cast that can be enjoyable to watch. a shame they're all on a broken record though.

HeartCatch Precure! END

I marathoned the last 15 chapters, I didn't want to but
after Moonlight joins the team
I just couldn't stop.

It was a nice surprise to see
Cure flower
in action just when I though Moonlight was overpowered, and I cried a little in the
final fight with Sasorina ;__;

The final fights were really good, but all the Moonlight VS Dark precure and the great revelation of Sabaku was too obvious.

In the end
they really kick the ass of Dune. XD

I was sad because it was the final chapter but it really hit me in the last scene, I smiled and shed a tear.

This was a better end than Smile precure, Heartcatch isn't only a good precure anime it is a good anime in general.

And once again the sadness because there is no more chapters no more Erika

So Which Precure should I watch next? I need more Precure

Just finished Hidamari Sketch S1 today.

I'll start off by saying that I'm not a fan of Shaft's style. Sometimes it feels like they are trying way too hard to be edgy and it just feels cheap. I've only seen a few of their works though.

The super-relaxed pace of the show was making me fall asleep at first. It took a while to finish as I had been constantly putting it off. I'd just watch an episode if I was really bored and had nothing else to do. Maybe that's how you're supposed to watch it.

But despite all that, I found it quite charming and enjoyed the character interactions. Before I knew it, I found myself smiling whenever I was watching. I can't really bring myself to complain about anything. Strangely enough, I don't mind all the Shaft juxtaposition here. Slice-of-life magic or something. I'd definitely put this above Yuru Yuri whatever that show was.

Anyway, I just watched the first episode of x365 and was kind of surprised by the jump in quality. Maybe it's just a first episode thing, but quality upgrade or not, I think I will enjoy this.

True, but I figure impressions are not just for yourself and those who have already seen the show, but they also give a glimpse to those who haven't seen it yet. Just look at the many people recently that have taken up watching iDOLM@STER and Toradora. Sometimes I feel that one sentence impressions sell the shows short, good or bad.
Yep! I always try to mention this. I like finding great shows through impressions and I always like to hear when someone tries out a show because of my impressions.

Congrats! I hope you enjoyed Heartcatch's endgame while it lasted because it's basically the only one in the franchise that isn't a thoughtless mishmash of plot escalations or otherwise disappointing in some significant way.

My personal recommendation is to watch Fresh next.

As for what to watch next, DoReMi is the obvious choice.

I'm glad you're enjoying the wideness. S1 is definitely the weakest (yet still great) part of the series, and x365 is by far my favorite season and you should at least watch that all the way if you decide to take a break.

You know, what computer program you use.

Photoshop. Default brush.

I literally do nothing special. Drawing stuff is more about choices than it is techniques (at least for me anyways). It's also about emotions. What makes me feel excited when I draw. I chase those options, and try to get them to look better than they do in my mind. Of course you have to know stuff like "what does this thing look like at that angle?" and "what kind of perspective this is" but those things are boring. The tools are just there to facilitate what you know.

Also, most people I know draw way too fast, and hurry to the finish line. I've worked with tight deadlines too, but whenever possible I like to slow down and check what I'm doing so I can fix my mistakes along the way... I still make mistakes in the end, but I just accept it.

GTO 17 New OP isn't as good as first OP. Anyway, we're in the Kanzaki arc, and from what I've seen I'm guessing the poor girl was in a relationship with a teacher and that went downhill fast. Kikuchi be wantin' some of that somethin' fierce, though. Also, how many of Onizuka's students will try to kill themselves before this show is over?

I feel the same way, but sometimes I feel I take too long working on something, though that might just be because I get distracted too much while I'm drawing.

OK I'll do it, I remember watching the first season on my first years in high school, this is old so help me find it.

I would have rather watched Gyrozetter instead.

And really, protag? Do you really need your imaginary friend to tell you to activate the trap you just put down last turn when a giant monster is direct attacking you?

Accel World SP 1-8 END

You know something's gone very wrong when the short gag specials they add to the home releases turn out to be far more consistent in quality & entertaining than the main series. It's almost as if you're paying for these four minute specials but you end up with all this extra crap added to them.

All images borrowed from wonzo.

Another movie which wonzo had posted about previously which I had been looking to watch was this film here. It's an anime movie that deals with the issue of bullying and the possible side effects such as suicide that may result from it, as well as even somewhat portraying characters who have disabilities and the issues faced with them as well.

While a couple of scenes may come across as a bit more forced or perhaps somewhat contrived the movie handles the material with a straight face and takes things seriously. It doesn't go so far as to be melodramatic with it's characters emotions either. It really does show the harmful side effects of turning ones back or pushing your problems onto others and the viscous cycle this creates. Watching the film everyone just seems like a grade A jerk but as the film continues it at least explores why they act the way they do always going back to the theme of bullying.

Also perhaps of interest to the staff enthusiasts is that the director of this movie is Satoshi Dezaki, who also directed the anime film adaptation of They were Eleven and is the older brother of Osamu Dezaki.

happybirthdayd.jpg

Asuka has a tough time but it's really interesting to see her grow and overcome the problems and people in her life.

The art sometimes seemed inconsistent but I thought there were a lot of really nicely detailed background or environmental shots throughout the film, especially in the middle when Asuka is visiting her grandparents for a little while. Other times the art itself isn't bad but the general layout of a shot might just be kind of boring visually. The animation is pretty average to poor but it doesn't really hurt in this case with the story the film is trying to tell. The show certainly likes it's "shocked" type shots with the characters as well where the top and bottom of the screen get darker or a bit shaded while the center is more lit, usually on the characters eye's. Branduil, and likely others, will be happy to know that the movie contains 2D hand drawn vehicles as well! There's all kinds like trucks, buses and even more of a cruise ship I believe it was.

happybirthdayb.jpg

Not many anime contain characters with disabilities so this is an welcome change from the norm.

While this might not be the kind of film you would watch over and over a few times I still think it's one people should watch at least once for it's effort in exploring the theme's it does and portraying the characters in the way it does.

For another look at the film which originally got me interested to watch it, and hopefully more do so as well, here's a link to wonzo's comments on the film:http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=44401082&postcount=14215

The eclectic art direction in Hidamari Sketch shouldn't be confused with the empty Shinbo-ism that has come to define SHAFT, even if they both share the commonality of visually compensating for a lack of animation. You may disagree, but I think that Hidamari's constant use of prints, patterns, and scrapbooking are elegant ways of conveying how the characters' lives are shaped by and centered around art. It's a visual extension of their offbeat personalities and, in a way, we're seeing the world as they see it.

If only SHAFT were as smart and deliberate in how they ply their "craft" in their other shows.

Futari wa Pretty Cure 20

Was a little skeptical going in when the title revealed there was going to be a "two Honoka" plot (though two Honokas would be awesome), but I have to say, this was probably my favorite episode so far.

Props to Nagisa for figuring out something was up, though Poisonny kinda gave herself away. Her encounter with both Honokas on the train was great. Love how they tied it back to the episode where the two were feuding and read each others diaries. Also liked how nobody on the train noticed what was going on.

Then Poisonny really wasn't fucking around. She really kicked the crap out of them. And she even dodged a marble screw! It wasn't an automatic win button for once. They actually had to use the attack to their situation.

This show has kinda gotten into a nice rhythm for the most part. Hope Porun doesn't ruin it.

the villains are about to get a lot tougher.
I really enjoyed that episode as well.
2 Honokas are better than one!
also Porun is totally precious.

Uniting the world through conquest is the stupidest plan of all time. Tell me again how well that really worked out for Napoleon. You cannot conquer the world. It doesn't work. Especially not if your military strength is FOUR MOBILE SUITS.
They want to unite the world , not to conquer it.
You know how they could've worked that? Showing Saji caught in the mess. Instead it's been Saji sitting on a couch with his overly attached girlfriend.
Except that it happens.
Wait wait wait. How do you dismiss Durandal's plan, when in the same post you've affirmed that it is essentially what Pretentious Being is aiming for in this show? I'm lost here. Oh, I don't disagree that Gauron is a better villain than Ezelcant (except for the fact that Ezelcant was the hero in AGE and Flit the villain), and certainly more entertaining than Durandal, but that's not the point. I've given the show plenty of space to breathe about this whole war orphan and royally evil mercenary deal. Been all over my posts, it has. The problem is that the guy is TOO Gauron. All he needs is the anguished declaration of love for Setsuna to cement it. I have no problem reusing similar conventions, I mean, it's Gundam, I accept space colonies and Char Clones and so on and so forth. I just ask that they not be so damn blatant.
Well their plans are different.
Durandall plan was the perfect example of gaining something through force , while the celestial being only wish is to keep armed conflict from spreading for a purpose that i won't spoil.

No, no it was not. The plot was "Let's kill like, 20 guys and see if it stops war in areas." and the worst part is that it's worked from time to time. Which makes no sense. You don't get to just fly in, shoot twenty guys and intimidate people. That the combined military strength of the entire planet just lost because 3 more Gundams popped up ruins any credibility this story has. Not even Kira's Freedom got away with standing up to the entire military force of a world and winning.
The entire premise is that somehow a group of people got access to a superior technology that make them way in advance of everything existing.
Besides the point of them being able to change things is the fact that they are overpowered and that they have a plan prepared years ( decades ) before . Otherwise they would be just another faction dealing with war.

And yes kira freedom wiped the floor of the coordinator fleet by himself once the seed was "on" .. i do remember an overwhelming victory in the destiny end. Kira wiped teh floor of 1 entire fleet and the paint on his gundam was still perfect.
No it isn't! What was Amuro, if not a child exploited by the Earth Forces for their war? What was Heero, if not a war-child exploited by the Barton Foundation for Operation Meteor? What was Kira, if not a child exploited by the Earth Forces for their war? Gundam is basically only about children being exploited for war. Just that most protagonists don't have the laughably asinine origin story of "Shot mommy and daddy because a man with a goatee said God said to do it."
Setsuna situation is much more in phase with what's happenning and what happenned in the wars fought in africa last century or atm. That was my point. i mean his setting not his attitude.
That's precisely the point of drawing parallels. Except that one does it with wit, and the other does it with all the rhetorical skill of a junior high student. Why would I draw parallels on disparate matters? It makes no sense to compare The Big O and Azumanga Daioh because they're completely different. It makes sense to compare Full Metal Panic! and Gundam 00 because Gundam 00 makes pathetic attempts at replicating Full Metal Panic!'s story.
Fair point..
But both only share a common theme .. they have drastic different settings.

But weather behaves in one way, and people do not. You cannot say with any certainty at all that people will do x if you do y. You can say that in the past people have done x when subject to y, but the group today isn't the same as the group yesterday. It's unreliable, which makes her CONSTANT BITCHING when something ANYTHING goes awry, insufferable. This isn't how social science works. If I do a study of armed conflicts responding to armed interventions by a third party and conclude that it's likely that in any given case the two parties will both respond with hostility to the third, I shouldn't cry like a bitch when I'm wrong. I should go back and see what I overlooked, yeah, but Sumiragi's whining is ridiculous.

Besides, if 3 fucking Gundams can throw the entire combined strength of the world's military for a loop, tell me again why we need to plan ANYTHING?
Except that people do behave according to some patterns.
This is advanced maths and it's used in various places of the world.
Tracking individuals for example..or another application is "game theory" at various levels.
Gundam 00 does it at another scale ..but the theory behind what's used already exist to this day. By analysing human behavior, scientists already have many simulatiosn for many given cases. This stuff is used when design buildings for example or in sports ( to improve teamwork ) ..gundam 00 just use that stuff and put a future coat of paint on it.

At some point it stops being smart and deliberate and becomes cheap and lazy. I'm not saying that's the case with Hidamari but I'm saying that SHAFT doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt with regards to its productions.
