Encouragement of Climb 11

While this episode wasn't about mountain climbing but rather the wonders of french toast, that still didn't stop it from looking as great as it usually does. A shame next week's the last episode though. ;_;

There's not much to say, other than there was a nice moment between Midori and Shiori that directly parallels their first meeting way back in episode... 4 I believe. If nothing else, there's a clear shape to the way the story is being told and I can appreciate the craft in that at least.

I suppose it also fits into the theme of communication that has been running through the show nearly every episode... and assuming the show is going to end in a couple of weeks, I can't imagine something happening at the end that would change what the show is about anyway.

Finished the first season of Hidamari Sketch. Working through the two OVA episodes now, then moving on to the next season.

This show is seriously wonderful. It can be a bit slow at times (though I hear the second season and beyond rectify that to an extent), but the use of color, the visuals, the music, and the way the characters interact are just amazing. I'm a huge fan of surreal stuff, and this series really incorporates stuff like that well. Especially Episode 5, which as I said a couple days ago is probably one of my favorite episodes of anything ever. I also like that (so far) it's been fairly light on side characters. There's just Yoshinoya, the Principal, and the Landlady (and Chika, but she was only in one episode). Some shows, like Nichijou, handle large supporting casts well, but for other shows it's nice to just focus mostly on the central cast, and have a very few supporting characters for them to interact with on occasion. Oh, and the OP. If you don't clap along with the OP, you're some kind of monster who hates fun.

So yeah, there you go. I love this show. Can't wait to start the second season, which I hear is even better than the first. :D

OH NO A 2 PART EPISODE!!!! What will become of Gao Gai Gar? Will Mamoru ever rescue Pikachu? Can Team Rocket's evil Zondarmon know no bounds? WILL HANA AND JOSEF RETURN SAFELY FROM THEIR WALK? Can Taiga defeat his employees' bizarre zombie apocalypse?

STAY TUNED TRUE BELIEVERS!

Huh? I never thought it was that kind of show, honestly. This sort of interests me a bit more.

I seem to see this a lot in SHAFT shows.

Maturity, bitches.
The show is done in the UK, which has just as much as good CGI as the US but they don't use it as much.
We use up all our CGI talent on Lloyds TSB adverts and animating Aleksandr Orlov from comparethemeerkat.com

Poor Dera-chan. Sometimes the truth is just too much to bear.

All in all, another enjoyable episode. KyoAni love their jump cut animation.

If joy was ever distilled, pure joy, and allowed to crystallize into the form of an anime, it would be Hidamari Sketch. It is the closest thing to nirvana in animation for me. Truly happiness.

It's less that the story is surreal and more the imagery, really. The quick cuts, the way the backgrounds are drawn at times, the use of real objects instead of animated, the music, it just all blends together to create a very surreal-ish atmosphere, I find. I love it.

This show is so overtly happy-go-lucky it hurts.
Kanna had some great lines again.
And Tamako's face at the end was legitimately funny.

It's mid-March, which means once again it's time for Global Shinkai Day. Over the coming weekend (March 15-17), all four of Shinkai's movies (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters per Second, and the recently-released-in-the-U.S. Children Who Chase Lost Voices) will be free to stream on Crunchyroll worldwide.
Well, unless you live in Japan, in which case I guess you're expected to go out and buy them on disc or something. Sorry.

It is mostly quite "grounded". However, the "SHAFT/Shinbo"-directing works with dream-like sequences at times.
They are quite nice touches to the show and work well when done, but are not a majority in any light.

Now that was some first episode right there. Does an excellent job of introducing a ton of characters fast, but effective, and from the offset a grey area subjects are explored. The only downside is that a lot of in-world terms are used and can be jarring, had to rewind one or two times to fully understand what the hell they were talking about. Even that didn’t diminish my enjoyment though, it was thrilling till the end. Can’t wait to see more. I hope it fills my Blade Runner-itch well.

Side note: those guns are awesome.

Robotics;Notes 01

There is nothing really that special going on so far, expect the humor. It’s so well timed and not too over the top. Story seem lighthearted so far, but that is not a bad thing – the characters are likable and pacing is decent. Will keep watching.

Saint Seiya Omega 48

That was all rather surprising. How in the world can everything even be resolved in the few episodes left and especially if everyone else is lacking so much in power. As a Kouga fan it just feels so painful watching this who arc.
I mean everytime he gets some boost, some way to prevail he just gets slapped with some new thing in the plot to bring him so far down. Now wholly into dark koga mode, which is just depressing, is rather intense. Who is even there to bring him out? I hope Eden can somehow manage it but with Dark Koga one hitting killing Amor, and easily blasting Soma like that, I have no hope in that. Maybe Abzu will go back and slumber?

This episode was kind of strange. It reminded me of the off-beat feeling I got from this show for the first 3 or 4 episodes. The storyboarding was rather weird and had a bit of things I thought were overdone. A lot of unnecessary depth-of-field shots, many jump cuts, many shots focusing on legs or the side of the head. I don't think it was awful, but definitely it doesn't stand up to the director's previous entry in the series (ep 3). There were a number of times where they broke the 180º rule and I'm at a loss as for why.
Even then, the story was pretty nice, and the storyboard at least managed to convey it and transmit the tone. Not heavy-handed, but not so inane that it's pointless either.

On other stuff, wow, 23 key animators for one episode. That is not normal on a Kyoani show, where the rotation teams consist of 5~8 animators. This time, like 18 people had to help out, the schedule must be really tight after almost a whole year of airing things non-stop. I wonder if the storyboard had to get creative and weird due to time issues with the animation? There were a lot of stills and BG shots as the girls talked.
The parts that were animated were well animated anyway. I've watched Hyouka 13 yesterday and now this, both episodes from Nobuaki Maruki. I rather like his style. And we even got Ishidate contributing some KA for the baton show near the end, so it's all well.
I hope the last two episodes have gotten priority and more time to produce than this, so they can deliver a satisfying finale.

Tamako Market 10:

Kanna continues to steal every scene she's in. Watching Midori panic was pretty funny and a nice change of pace too. I don't know what it is since technically the entire show looks like K-On (obviously), but this episode in particular had the most... how shall I say, K-On-ish expressions and movements/gestures. And oh look, a cliffhanger. Granted, it was coming for episodes now but still... ^^;

Sgt. Keroro the Super Movie 3: Keroro vs. Keroro - The Great Sky Battle. (Rewatch)

The first time I watched this, I had an awful sub and it was a bit difficult to follow in some parts. This time however the sub was of much higher quality so I could appreciate the film more.

This is easily the best Keroro movie out of the 5 Sunrise produced. The villain is really interesting considering that
it is an evil clone of Keroro himself
. His invasion of Earth was completed in just two minutes shows how high the stakes are raised in this film and also how inept the Keroro Platoon are in actually carrying out invasions.

The film has a good balence of comedy and seriousness. The comedy referencing many other anime although mostly Gundam including
The Keroro Platoon singing Tobe! Gundam! (The OP from Mobile Suit Gundam) at one point.
and
Keroro's MG RX-78-2 Gundam that he eventually pilots.
. The seriousness with all the references to friendship and the bonds of friendship which all the films feature quite greatly. This is shown a lot more in the first film although this one has it in spades.

I highly recommend anyone to watch this. Although I'd watch movies 1 and 2 first as movies 1, 2 and 3 are a trilogy.

I loved how they remember to deploy the Gunbuster rip-off in the final battle, even if it was just in the background and didn't do much. Also, the movie had a bunch of obvious DBZ references too thanks to Shivava, including the
world tournament and Yamcha in the credits.

Finally an irl person I recognize in these little random reference database moments for laughter. Loved the part about how audaciously Kato tripped, continues to consistently deliver the moments to make me laugh during those parts as well as her VA during that second half.

Battle simulation was just as funny as the spinning bats, how random to have Thai Kickboxers added into the Simulation to see if they can stop this war.

Cardfight!! Vanguard - Asia Circuit 76 -77:So much for Singapore, it looks like theyr are using the exact same plot development ats eason one, so very few surprises ahead. Stil the fights are fun, and that's all that matter anyway.

Spice Nekomimi Wolf 5 - 6:Wow, that was quite a bittersweet couple of episodes. Looks like everyone is betraying everyonefor a few silver coins :/ If it wasn't for Holo's cuteness, I might have cried at times, it was really strongl emotional episodes, in my opinion.

So the Beautiful Cresta getting destroyed every single episode is perhaps the greatest running gag ever. Seriously, as horrible a human being as Vice Principal Uchiamada is, you can't help but feel for the guy when his car gets totaled EVERY EPISODE. How can his insurance still cover this?

Lots of bowing.

If you get a chance I recommend checking out the manga after you finish the anime. Aside from the anime having an alternate ending, there are various differences in the material adapted and roughly the later half of the manga isn't adapted.

Was the CG for the queen done on a fucking Dreamcast or something? That's the ugliest thing I've seen in an anime in a while.

Dark King sure likes to say "yami" a lot. I think my memories of Yami kinda undermined the drama here...but I didn't feel too much drama anyway.

I knew it was going to happen, but I was still disappointed to see Mepple and Mipple return. I hate those guys. And now they've got Porun too.

Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Porun isnt that bad. He cries, but he's still not as annoying as the other two. And he is way cuter.
I'm unknow in the way of the "cute". but porun suffers because he is at times annoying in his attitude and has no counter part to keep him in check. Meppo for example has nagisa tell him to stop every tiume he cross the line .. and porun doesn't even have that.

Porum is a child without his mother that cries a lot .. ( as a character ) this is never good.
At least the other babies in the precure universe had someone to keep them in check.

The GTO anime was worth watching for the OST (and the fantastic French dub).
But yeah the manga is better imo.
French dub ? i have to admit i once heard 3 sec of the dub , and changed channels..it was "that" horrible.

i can't stand the Bleach and gundam seed french dubs either. Horrible dub.

This looked nice and all but the humor just falls completely flat 90% of the time. Maybe it flows better as a manga but it really didn't do much for me at all and I'm not really motivated to find out.

Heartcatch PreCure!

Episode 4

It was kind of interesting how this episode starts out with a fight right away. It's one of those ways of giving off the impression that the girls have already settled in to their roles and have now been at this for a little bit.

I like this Kumojacky guy who was introduced this episode. I like his design and his personality kind of comes off like he's a calm and cool but maybe also overconfident and melodramatic type. I liked the little bit of screen time he got anyway.

I think the first PreCure might have had more of a duel style transformation but since I haven't seen it for awhile and was more used to Smile and Doki Doki's singular or one after the other style, it was interesting to see the duet style scene. Just the animation and visuals there are really nice. If that wasn't enough, the combination attack a little later looked really awesome as well with all the flourish it gives off.

I guess the first Desertrian was the exception as I'm seeing a general likeness in their faces now, sort of how Smile's Akanbe had a type of clown faces. I haven't played it but they kind of reminded me of what I've seen of the characters from that Castle Crashers game.

Different ones have commented that later PreCure shows will borrow elements from earlier shows such as music or maybe episode theme's etc. With Heartcatch, as part of the Desertrian's being summoned and the kind of explosion sound effect that's used, reminds me of the same type of sound effect when the Akanbe's in Smile were being summoned.

Erika and Tsubomi really seem like quite the team already.

Episode 5

It seems another new person has been introduced rather quickly. I mentioned Kumojacky sort of came off as a bit melodramatic maybe but this guy Cobraja definitely comes off as more flamboyant. They've all got rather different names anyway, haha. I don't have much to comment on this episode other than I thought the fight is good.

It almost came across like Erika and Tsubomi were the only ones who showed up to the grand opening of the second restaurant.

Also, Erika and
I'll think up a catch phrase next time!
Haha.

That was the horrible norm so many years ago.
