Winter of Anime 2013 |OT -6| How much lower can we go?!

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Well... that's one way to read the ending...

I felt like it was the obvious reading, since it is exactly what happened.
Ame's irresponsibility wound up nearly killing Hana, who, if this weren't anime, would've died on the mountain.

How is that alright in any universe?

Ame could've waited one day to say goodbye but he had to pick the worst possible day. It's not like he was spending his time saving baby birds from getting washed away by the storm. Who the fuck knows what he was doing?

Its time for Spring 2013 Season Heroine Bingo.

Pick your waifus now, AnimeGaf.

Hinagiku the heroine of Hayate no Gotoku? This chart is ridiculous.

The :sdburton subtext was all over the place in this one.

I know I shouldn't expect too much from my little girl cartoons in terms of things like physics, but this episode hurt my brain a lot. There were tons of weird transitions between cuts during the main fight, with the most egregious example being when White jumps on top of Black (cough), Pisard goes away flying next, and immediately after he's standing like nothing happened on top of the train. And speaking of Pisard, it's
unbelievably stupid that he goes out of his way to corner Honoka and finally kill heronly for him to give back the magical gizmo that allows her to transform because of the honour of the fight. I'm not expecting him to be ruthless (he literally threw a huge scrap of metal two meters away from Honoka when he was standing right in front of her), but his motivation makes absolutely no sense. At first he's desperate to survive, and the next moment he's acting all honourable and crap.

Additionally,
it was kind of a jerk move that they would show Honoka realising the horror of killing your opponent in battle only to hand wave it in the next line by claiming he only went back to the twilight zone or what the shit.
Choose a fucking tone, you stupid cartoon.

Okay, so, 4 years after Gundam (3 after its end) we have this going on. Apparently the Federation isn't as stupid as Flit's, because we've got all manner of MP Gundams, and now some Zeon hold-outs have stolen one armed with NUCLEAR WEAPONZ! And stuff. Anyway, the idea here is that we're all screwed unless this hotblooded young kid who kinda stole the other one can save the base!

Not that bad yet.

Need the origin on D2.

Answered my own question after referring to a chart. Guess she's from Azazel-san.

Seeing as I'm not going to watch that, I'll take B3. There are maybe five on the whole chart that aren't totally visually offensive.

Everyone else was blinded by Hosoda's glorious furry semen to notice.

Drama would still happen and Hana still chase him, I can play this thing too..
who knows what happened if he meet bear that not on way sheltering for storm?

Ame acting like prick because he more wolf (animal) than human, that's the point.

I just... my mind... I don't... nyannyannyan...

He
just discovered that his master died, that was the impetus for him leaving the human world and recognizing his desire to be a wolf. The storm was just a convenient plot device/excuse to provide the clear parallel between Ame being natural and Yuki being entrenched in civilization.

Hana going after him was just the Nihon-dorama stuff that had to give the final act its climatic event. Which I figure people would complain about if it wasn't there and all she did was stay at home or went to pick up Yuki.

UtaPrince! The origin of fish eye moe!

Uh I guess A1 for that BrainBase love.
Oh my god, you're right. THEY ARE FUCKING TWINS.

I guess I'll go with A5, then. If only because I'm familiar with it. I can barely recognize any of the faces on that chart, and their character designs are just as forgettable.

A3 for lyfe. and what the hell is D6 doing there? that show should be over by now surely!

Maybe of what's been shown.
I don't believe for a minute she's perfectly okay, especially after the way her husband died, which she had been thinking about when Ame left. I understand she vowed to raise them however they wished, but she's still a mother and after 10 years, it's hard to believe she'd be so accepting of the decision to never see her son again.

It would have been easier to swallow if it wasn't so abrupt. The two don't have a conversation of any kind when Ame bails, it's just Hana screaming and then accepting it out of nowhere because of a howl. That optimistic portrayal just felt so unearned, even if you ignore the fact you don't use the "be free!" trope on a friggin 10 year old kid, wolf or not.
The fact that she
still stuck with the father even after he transformed right in-front of her tells us she's a far more accepting person than most! I'd also argue than 10 years is really, really old for a wolf in the wild.

Still, I'll agree that
Ame is a bit of a shit and should've chosen a far better time to leave.

Need the origin on D2.
Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san, another Mizushima masterpiece.

Why chose to miss out on a fantastic series????

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 28 (end)

Well that was an interesting episode, litrally nothing of significance happened. Though that was some creative method of blocking out scenes of Asahina changing.

I guess I give the whole anime a 9 / 10 or so. Really compelling characters and plot at times and really makes the school club aspect of anime shine. Everything felt new and unique and they all interacted so well. Haruhi's personality could be a bit annoying at times especially during the filming of the movie episodes but just the mystery
of how everything she wills may come to pass, possibly,
keeps her being interesting enough to want to have around. Asahina and Yuki have their moments (especially Nagato on multiple occasions,
endless eight, hacks on the baseball bat in one episode, time jutsus, computer stuff
, or Asahina too). And of course, like a broken record tracking back through my haruhi posts, Kyon and Koizumi were the best, post, pre episode commentary tying things up, Koizumi's aspects and outlooks on life, Kyons inner dialogue and commentary, and jpn voice, koizumi too, all amazing.

Visuals were atrocious at times, day of sagittarius for example the space moments, closed space stuff, etc.

Glad you liked it and good to hear it can still be considered novel and unique even after so long but it seems you watched it in chronological order. Were you aware there was a different order to watch it in? If so was this a conscious decision? I'm curious because it seems this show would have a very different pacing and mood in this order and it's one of those things you can only experience one way or the other but not both.

As far as visuals go you do sort of have to keep in mind its age, people's minds were blown at just how often everyone's wardrobe would change or at the dancing in the ED.

Misato's past.

An angel appears in space and starts lobbing death bombs towards earth. Shinji and the gang must catch it and break it before it destroys Nerv. It's a hail mary plan and a reflection of how deep Misato's hatred towards the Angels is for taking her father. Meanwhile, the commander and vice commander head to Antartica or what they like to call "hell" now for reasons unknown. During their little bit of conversation, we hear that the Second Impact happened due to the sins of man. Oh goody.

That action at the end was thrilling and a great example of how mecha can be great to look at without much fighting involved. Shinji saying that he pilots the Eva so that he can hear praise from his father is disheartening, if only for the fact that the Commander seems to only say things so that cogs will turn and his will will be done. Well, except for Rei who seems to be an exception. It's kind of hard to root for Shinji when his goal is so... abysmal.

Great episode.

...well shit. Guess I'll settle for B4 unless there's some sort of happy medium between A5 and B4.

It's quite ridiculous in terms of keeping any sort of technological consistency with the shows that happen immediately afterwards in the chronology, if you care about such details, but the parts most people really dislike don't happen until much later in the series. In the meanwhile...I do remember the initial set of episodes being enjoyable, though mostly for the battle sequences.

Evangelion actually features very little in the way of conventional fighting, at least in the sense of what people think of when they hear of super robot anime (think beamspam, pummeling each other until one explodes, etc). I always thought that was one of the shows biggest assets, since it made for some really imaginative confrontations that did more than just showcase the robots' shiny asses.

Human enough to save her but not human enough to prevent her from coming to harm, clearly.

I just... my mind... I don't... nyannyannyan...

He
just discovered that his master died, that was the impetus for him leaving the human world and recognizing his desire to be a wolf. The storm was just a convenient plot device/excuse to provide the clear parallel between Ame being natural and Yuki being entrenched in civilization.
There was no urgency to him leaving. You're right, the story was a totally convenient plot point to show the parallels between the two kids, but that's all it is. It's manufactured in the worst sense because it exists for no other plot related reason.

The difference between the climax of Wolf Children and TGWLTT and Summer Wars is one of narrative momentum.

TGWLTT:
Makoto fucks up and reveals her time traveling powers to Chiaki, she also wastes all of them in the process, the foreshadowed bike accident happens to Kousuke instead, Chiaki needs to bail her out and breaks some law of time traveling that requires him to go back that very moment.

You can say argue that Chiaki leaving is just as forced, but I forgive it, because it's where the story was headed anyway. Also, time travel is serious business, it's not much of a stretch of the imagination to assume that it is strictly governed, which ties into the theme of responsibility.

Summer Wars:
Pretty straightforward. A virus hacks ALL THE COMPUTERS and decides to crash every satellite. There's nothing new here.

The biggest concession I had to make to Summer Wars was the idea of OZ in the first place, because no one could be so mindbogglingly stupid as connecting every computer in the world to an MMO then making the admin pass encrypt key public. Fortunately, they got that out of the way in the beginning and I was able to enjoy it a lot more than the rest of GAF.

That was my biggest problem with Wolf Children. My first impression after watching it was "this is like a slice of life", which would be fine and all, but Hosoda forced some drama into it at the last moment without the proper build up, and literally conjured up a storm in order to get the ending he wanted.

TL;DR: Ame is a dick, storm was an ass pull.

Hana going after him was just the Nihon-dorama stuff that had to give the final act its climatic event. Which I figure people would complain about if it wasn't there and all she did was stay at home or went to pick up Yuki.
It's not my job to find a way to bring things to a head without hamfisted drama, that is Hosoda's job.

It's mid-March, which means once again it's time for Global Shinkai Day. Over the coming weekend (March 15-17), all four of Shinkai's movies (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters per Second, and the recently-released-in-the-U.S. Children Who Chase Lost Voices) will be free to stream on Crunchyroll worldwide.
Well, unless you live in Japan, in which case I guess you're expected to go out and buy them on disc or something. Sorry.

Is there a reason it's this weekend in particular?

The UK has it scheduled for this fall, and now Australia is getting it this summer (well, I guess it would be winter to them) -- the Cowboy Bebop BD box is going down under thanks to Madman in July.

Now, if somebody, anybody in the U.S. would be so kind as to stop fucking around and get this over here...
Is there a reason it's this weekend in particular?
Eh, the original fan forum planned it for the end of February on the basis of "spring is coming soon = cherry blossoms" like someone mentioned before, and I guess CR decided it was as good a time as any.

Glad I'm not crazy for feeling this way at least. Figured I'd be alone.

Nah, the whole last half hour kind of irked me.
Yuki's resolution bothered me too because of how her relation to Sohei was handled. He never apologized for obnoxiously harassing her and even though he showed remorse she never really forgave him either. It felt more like the situation was swept under the rug rather than being water under the bridge ya know? Sure her confession scene was more about coming to terms with herself than with him but it still felt really half baked. Her arc and character were still better and more interesting than Ame's though.

Still, Wolf Children is definitely Hosoda's best work as a director but for me The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is the better movie. Even if
bonus time leaps were total deus ex machina moments.
