What? No. Stage productions are never designed around any specific casting. :p

Well I'm not referring to specific individuals but rather the fact that the actors are the actors. She can't morph the physical characteristics of the actors. Who knows, she might be dabbling in everything and trying to design the costumes, makeup, hair, everything.

I like Kumeta and I like Tatami, but I'd be actually excited if Kumeta was doing the writing and Yusuke Nakamura handled the designs.

And no Perfect Averything.

I think you're really overthinking this.... as usual.... which will probably end up making you post stuff which looks dumb in the end. Don't take it the wrong way, but it seems to happen fairly often!

Just think of the announcement as Kawamori showing off concept artwork and announcing the people he's collaborating with for pre-production of the project. Trying to extrapolate specific production details out of what is basically a very minimal announcement is pointless!

I agree, I definitely do tend to overthink things.

Macross Plus 01

With the prevalence of "idol culture" in today's otaku-oriented media, and technology like Vocaloid and Idolmaster giving us idols who don't even have to be real, I thought there was no better time to revisit this classic Macross OVA, with its themes that are perhaps more relevant than ever before.

Macross Plus, of course, is the first director/composer collaboration between Shinichiro Watanabe and Yoko Kanno, and also the series that really put those two on the map. And their combined sensibility is obvious from the very first scene, with Watanabe's skillful iconic framing set to Kanno's wonderful "Voices." It's really their effort, alongside fantastic mechanical animation and high production value, that elevate a fairly simple story about a group of estranged friends who are trying to cope with their past and their broken dreams.

One thing that's instantly notable is Watanabe's framing. There's a tremendous amount of layering to many of the shots, alongside liberal use of DOF. It really gives the visuals a sense of depth and 3D space; one thing this helps to do is establish locations quickly as believable spaces, and it also just makes it much more interesting to look at.

The scene where Isamu is briefed at New Edwards is particularly well-framed. Every shot is carefully chosen to communicate the relationships between characters, and how they feel about each other, using body language, lighting, and positioning. I particularly like how DOF is used in this shot to deemphasize the speaker and communicate Isamu's distraction.

Another scene I really like is when Guld and Myung meet. What's great about this scene is the use of visual subtext, where two characters have one conversation while the visuals tell us about something else entirely. When a story is written like this it can really separate the good directors from the bad ones, because you have to be able to communicate entirely through audiovisual cues without the aid of the dialogue itself. It's refreshing to watch when so many anime have the subtlety of a CG mecha landing on your face.

Thematically, the story touches on some relevant aspects of IDOL CULTURE, as well as what that means for humanity. This being the first episode it's mostly just foreshadowed for now, although the sci-fi themes are really subservient to the larger motifs relating to lost dreams of adolescence. It's really a remarkably adult story, in that all three of the main characters are grown people, having to deal with the reality of their current life, its inevitable complications, the differences between the life they found and the one they once desired, and a nostalgic desire for simpler and happier times in youth. It's not nearly as dull as I'm making it sound though, there are dogfights and explosions and soon, Idol singing.

Let me see if I've got all these TAF announcements straight:

- P.A. Works is making a show for the Summer season based on a novel from the Tatami Galaxy author with character designs from Koji Kumeta, guaranteeing absolute insanity
- Kawamori is now a Broadway producer making shows for DTL
- Patlabor live action movie confirmed, which I'm sure Maiden Japan will eventually license the way things are going
- Gainax is now making eleven billion new shows including the long-awaited sequel to their first feature film

And this is just the first day!

Did I miss anything?

I think there was some update on a Gonzo show or something, but I don't think anyone needs to hear about it!

JoJo Part 3 will be an 18 hour stage musical mixing holograms, CG, live actors, lolis and nico nico comments. Mark my words.

I wasn't sure what to expect, so I was surprised that this was much more gentle than I thought it would be. This is certainly not the Jesus and Buddha of South Park fame anyway. lol

I have to imagine that the manga would be more than just them avoiding the landlord though... because that could get old fairly quickly.

The nice point spicing things up is, of course, the sexual tension between the two leads.
I really do adore this shot.

As always, fascinating insight into Hyouka, Shergal. I'm always looking forward to it.

In slightly more personal news, the papers I've had to write and written, so should be getting around to catching up on anime shortly - starting with Tamako Market and episode 3 of Natsu no Arashi. Y'know, if you guys were wondering.

tamako market - 11

For whatever reason all I could think of were those horror stories about foreign women getting kidnapped by Saudi royalty for their prison-harems.

Obvious where it'll go, but such a fun ride, I can't complain. We need a Kanna OVA.

Just read the news about the new Tomihiko Morimi x Kumeta x PA Works Project.

Is there a reupload of the PV?
Tamako = PV/trailer for a new anime series
Dera = every fan not in Japan who wants to watch it
Midori = Bandai Channel

(well, I'm sure it'll be reuploaded by someone eventually, but I haven't seen anything yet. I don't think there's much in the PV besides staff listings and some pretty background art anyway)

The landlord thing is a much smaller part of the manga. I'm surprised they put it into focus for the first half of the ova, frankly.

So that means there's still hope for a full season of Good Loser Kumagawa?

There's never really been a 'story arc' as such, since, you know, they're both gods
well not gods as such but you ken what I mean
. If worst comes to worst they'll just zip off this earthly plane. I have no idea what the movie could possibly be about.

Sounds fine for a series, but a movie? Well, it'd be interesting to see anyway.

Moe needs no story.
Jesus moe?

Railgun 10-24

1267814036280.gif

Well at least I got some enjoyment out of this.

I have literally seen 72 episodes in the Index franchise and I can honestly say I don't particularly like the franchise. Yet I'll probably watch Railgun S2. I guess I really do like self-abuse. The show is fairly well animated especially in some of the battle segments. Episode 24 flat out looked amazing at times due to the way they depict Mikoto's abilities. The villain really hurt the final arc though due to the fact that she couldn't shut up instead of laughing maniacally the entire time.

So I was hanging out with my art club girls this week (the last before I don't see them again for half a year), and I discovered they're all really big Higurashi and Umineko fans. They're also 12/13, which I personally find hilarious.

In any case, one of my girls wanted to make me a gift to say thanks for always coming to club. I expected a sketch. Instead she made me a book of fanart in a day. x_x

And then my favorite one; she didn't want her friends to see this page. XD.

Also hi guys. It's been a while. >.>

Question regarding
the medal
in Tamako 11:

So she's in her second year of middle school right and the preview says almost a year has past so if she started collecting stamps at the end of elementary school we can roughly assume its been two years give or take the academic year.

The final leg was three purchases in one day for that evening's dinner. Since each stall in the market seems to be specialised each shopping trip requires separate purchases so we'll assume three stamps is the average per shopping trip. It was also for one meal and correct me if I'm wrong but most people have meals everyday. Now I'm guessing there's the weekly shop at the big supermarket for general things but the way this world is painted they buy a lot of their things from within the market on a regular basis. Surely it couldn't have taken 2 years to get 100 stamps at 3 stamps per trip. Does she really get so much free stuff?

She's in high school, five years have passed. Or roughly five years, at least.

EDOT: Wait,
you meant the other way around lol. I think she had to fill 100 of those things with many stamps in them, not 100 stamps. But I don't know, since I didn't really pay attention to that part.

In actual related news, I'll be heading to Anime Contents Expo next weekend in Tokyo. Anything you guys want me to check out while I'm there? Figured I'd ask. =)

Each card has 49 spots, so she needed 4900 stamps.

Infinite Stratos season 2. Clearly the only anime that matters in 2014!

That would make more sense. I really shouldn't over think these things. That's what being bored on the bus does to you.

I thought she was in highschool but five ears seems far too great for 100 so my mind went for two years to make it should a tiny bit more reasonable. With 52 weeks a year just one stamp a week would get you to 100 over two years.

EDIT: OK with the 4900 and an assumption of three stamps per week she would make it within the five years.

EDIT: Why am I doing this?

Nice end. Not my favorite arc at all, due to just how compacted and, in turn, heavy handed it all felt at times, but I enjoyed it, still; the fleshing out of
Shinpachi and Otae's characters was nice, and Obi was a fantastic Gin foil
.

Yeah, the original version of Blossom not only has a different song playing but has actual dialogue where the girl is talking. Her dialogue includes things like people wondering about the existence of God and how those who have passed on would like to stay with those who still live on and those who are alive wish they could be with those have passed.
I'm curious as to why they changed it. I can get the music being licensing related, but usually they don't seem to have an issue with getting voicetracks.

No AKB S3. The dream is dead. RIP.

That castle thing reminds me of the Avalon from Code Geass R2

The main events at ACE are all stage events which you need to specifically book slots for beforehand when buying the tickets. If you didn't do any of that, well... have fun looking at boring booths I guess?

Edit: You'll probably want to try going to the Bandai Visual booth to get the free Gargantia blu-ray while you're there. They're giving out 4,000 copies a day at ACE.
