I'm reading JP's twitter, and while I do think his opinion is way too extreme, I don't get why some people are getting angry over it and so bothered because he thinks Kill la Kill is garbage. Maybe they're afraid he's talking as Platinum Games, and not as JP Kellams?

Maybe JP hates it but Inaba loves it so much that they'll make a game anyway (of course it's not gonna happen, just to show that, at least when it comes to Platinum, employees are free to state their own opinion on things, doesn't matter what the company thinks)
I just thought calling it moe was strange and nonsensical, especially after his reasoning. It's like saying you don't like, say, Avengers for being hipster or something.

His actual opinion I don't care about though.

Maturity, bitches.
People expected big things from Kill la Kill and thus were disappointed.

I just watch anime to shut my brain off half the time so I was entertained.

Haha, what? It's like "moe" doesn't actually mean anything and it's just a term used to provide blanket disapproval.

Completely agree on that.

Also ignoring things like Cowboy Bebop, Jin-Roh being made after Eva and honestly bordering on hipocrisy by criticizing the revealing character design of Kill la Kill when he worked on Bayonetta (and defended it after, so you can't even say there's a chance he worked on it but wasn't fond of it there either).

I think he's a very cool guy though, so I may be biased (he does get fanboyish at times, like defending unskippable credit screens for his games saying "if that's what you have to complain, then we did a pretty good job, no?", well, yes, you did, but unskippable credits still suck, please fix this shit.

I remember people being called lolicons for liking the Sorceress in Dragon's Crown. That was interesting.

Is The Order a Deathscythe? 02

Once again, an incredibly laid back show with an incredibly high yuri level. Now that it doesn't need to exposit as much, the characters are truly front and center. The dorm manager named Misery acted exactly as someone with that name would behave, and I liked the Kim cameo. The two new characters - Eternal Feather and Kana - were both pretty nice, too. I was wondering if Kana was going to be Koiwai using her Renge voice, but if anything, it's closer to her Utsutsu voice. Sure, they got a job at Deathbucks, but I wonder if Uncle Bob's would've been accepting applications.

Aww yeah, that's what I was hoping for. This could be a pretty fun little love story if they keep pushing it right way.

Finally some more odd behavior beyond just being goofs. It wouldn't surprise me if Hakuya is like part alien or his these weird powers come from how he got hurt. Those are kinda the most obvious answers, lol, but we'll see.

God, why my life is not anime.

Urusei Yatsura 2 - Beautiful Dreamer

Another of my experiments, as I watched it without knowing about Urusei Yatsura (well, I saw a few minutes of the tv series, but not even once complete episode) just because it has some fame and renown as an Oshii movie and being kind of different of your usual Yatsura story. And this time, it was successful: I liked it.
Mamoru Oshii's writing and direction is interesting, and not as pompous and unconstrained as it's the case in his later movies.
It talks about illusions and dreams, and the relativity of reality, while it also is an entertaining troupe comedy full of hijinks.

The development is interesting in how many phases the movie moves in: first the normal chaotic school festival preparations (I wonder if it's really like that in real Japan!), then the story changes to a moody, mysterious vibe, with rain at night, an empty city, something wrong going on but nor the characters nor the viewers can put exactly their finger in what's the problem. Some great cuts and photography in this part.
Later comes the first plot's reveal and the character trying to escape the nightmare, with more action but still with some creepy vibes. And then, baam, change of pace. The film goes in a direction I couldn't imagine, with the characters trapped in a false reality for weeks, and already accustomed to it. I liked a lot this part, they took the idea and just went forward with the consequences. It has an hilarious moment where the "straight guy" reveals that it's all a dream of someone in the group, after weeks of effort and exploration, and the MC is "dooh we all supposed from the start, but we went with the flow".
Finally, the final showdown with the antagonist and a weird dream sequence closes the movie. This part is slightly weaker, the different dreams parts seems to not serve any purpose to the plot but only for the animators and director playful show of skills. Finally it's all resolved happily, of course. :)

Urusei Yatsura 2 - Beautiful Dreamer
Mamoru Oshii actually directed the first half of the Urusei Yatsura TV series, and many episodes under his watch approached what Beautiful Dreamer provided. He can also be credited with lifting the source material even higher overall and made some key additions like Megane and the Lum Stormtroopers.

Amusing. I wonder if he ever watched the unbearable Bayonetta anime?

Ohh, cool.

I read in the wiki that Rumiko Takahashi didn't like how it diverted from the original script? And from that point, he exited the production of Urusei Yatsura (I'm seeing now he also was the director of the first movie).

Anohana 10

Hahahahaha. What a cop out. Then again I knew this would happen. There's still one episode left.

So far there are no tears for me.

Let's see if the last episode will pull it off. Come on Anohana. You've been building the whole show towards this. Now execute!

As good as he is at comedy and drama, apparently Oshii never really found much interest in it. I suppose he was tired of being pulled around and wanted the freedom to do his own thing.

It's a fantastic film, even without context to the characters.

Stoooop. I have too much stuff to watch!

It's why I used hipster in that comparison there. Granted hipster's kind of loose in definition, but it seems to generally be a flavor of counter-culture while moe seems more a term for cutesy girls trying to elicit an emotional response, so either as a generic "terrible" definition is bad.
I think he's a very cool guy though, so I may be biased (he does get fanboyish at times, like defending unskippable credit screens for his games saying "if that's what you have to complain, then we did a pretty good job, no?", well, yes, you did, but unskippable credits still suck, please fix this shit.

Yeah, he seems like a great guy from his posts so it's just a matter of differing opinion. And it's certainly not like I haven't gotten disillusioned with anime or had mixed feelings on it.
Amusing. I wonder if he ever watched the unbearable Bayonetta anime?
Well, that clarifies it a bit, but I still think he's off base (I'd use porn if I wanted to be derogatory rather than moe.) I don't even care about moe stuff, it's just so wildly off that it sets off my pedantic side.

Heh, it was my first exposure to Urusei Yatsura when I caught the one time it aired on Sci-Fi, and I figured out it was Rumiko Takahashi because the visual style looked a LOT like Ranma. But yeah, I'd like to see that film again sometime especially after watching the rest of Urusei Yatsura.

OK, so I just started watching Hyouka and I'm blown away by how good the first 12 minutes or so are. Feel like I've discovered gold with this one.
Had to stop watching midway through because 720p does not do the animation any justice. The music is the type that I typically listen to as well, so that's nice.

Getting Persona 4 vibes here.

Well, there's no actual magic or anything like that, but as far as character interaction goes, it's one of the best.

Watching:

Soredemo
Light, comedic, shojo romance-adventure? With an age gap?
I can dig on it, if they don't go too heavy on the shojo tropes. For now, I like the boy, he does a good contrast with the protagonist girl.

One Week Friends
Fluffy slice-of-lifeish romance with a touch of drama. I like the art style!
Episode 2 was good, it showed how sad is the girl's situation. She didn't use a diary because she gave up on making friends and living a normal life, that's why she was reticent at first. And the episode shows why. It's too painful to read the diary and see how much fun and how you knew people... and then it's all erased. And of course it doesn't really "work", people are still unknown for her even if in their own diary it says he is her friend.

Nanana
Well, I knew that this was going to disappoint me. Too much animu~, imo. From the wacky idea of a group of teenager girls going Indiana Jones around the world, to the forced setup all done because they wanted this to be about a treasure's hunt, to the contrived coincidence in the relationship between the ghost's girl, the MC and the landlady (so one of the leaders and founders of the island is the freaking landlady, and even she was friends with the ghost, she doesn't want to live with her... giving the mc an opportunity to live with her), to the mc who is a pervert but somehow rejects the well endowed landlady, to the little harem is already showing (school girl having the hots for him after knowing for a few seconds, and we still have the ghost girl and landlady!), to the character's design.
I will give it one more episode, and see if the new characters that appear that make a more interesting direction for the show.

Ping Pong
Yuasa directs a series from one of Taiyo Matsumoto's mangas. What a good combo. Eclectic and bold visual style, gripping direction, superb storyboard, lots of nice details, well crafted. The story seems simple, but when it's so well executed it doesn't really matter.

Jojo
More Jojo, now with animation! The opening is a bit spoilery, I know now that certain people will join the group. The new JoJo is funny in his rudeness and super 80s style punk (and somehow all the girls and even his mom are infatuated with him). Curious to see how this season will go, as I didn't read the manga and know this part is famous.

Mushishi
Well, what I can add after all you people have said. As good as the first season, the second episode showed they haven't lost a sliver of what is Mushishi. Good art, music, moody vibes, delightful stories that walk between sadness, hope, drama, mystery, love and tragedy.

edit:
Oh yeah, I forgot. I dropped already Brynhildr in the Darkness. Way too mediocre first episode, even if the first few minutes promised a bit better, and from what I read of the second ep, I dropped it with reason!

Oh yeah, it's been a while since I've seen the film, but episode 1 of the TV show gets referenced in this part. It's the game of tag where Ataru chases Lum to settle the fate of the planet, and through circumstance his own fate. Ataru was losing badly, so Shinobu promised that she'd marry him if he succeeded. Ataru's celebration in his final moment of victory got misinterpreted as a proposal to Lum. For a while Ataru, Lum, and Shinobu made up a love triangle, but Shinobu eventually moves on.

:lol is this gonna turn into
Wolf Children?
Either way
what I thought was gonna happen was confirmed, but it was pretty obvious. Now it's just a matter of what power exactly is. They must think having Hakuya around because he gave part of his power is gonna be a way to help Kobeni deal with her sickness.

Also: Mashiro has the best damn facial expression. Almost stealing the show.

Sorry but when someone discounts 2 decades worth of a medium because "there are no ideas anymore" then Im calling them out on their shit.
Admittedly it's worth remembering that Twitter doesn't really work well for giving your views in depth (well, I guess it might funnily enough work better there for Japanese), so it could be more like "I don't care about most anime post-Eva" or whatever, but you gotta be concise and so it ends up being what we got. And it really may the same as him just losing interest.

JP dropping truth bombs.

lmao. Poor guy. KLK, a show that we once thought was going to save anime, has killed it.

Anyway I actually agree what he's saying about Bayo though. Its clear from how exaggerated it is that its taking the mick out of fan service shows like.....KLK.

Alas, I never watched Urusei Yatsura as a kid, in my country it was all about Ranma 1/2.

and no one complained about tits in a cartoon, nor it seemed exploitative to us. Other times...

BTW, I wanted to comment. It's funny how it's seen the school life in an old anime as Urusei Yatsura in comparison with current animes. In the UY film, several of the "high school" characters seemed to be 20 years old or so, and they comment preferring beer while eating or whatever. Meanwhile, high schoolers now are depicted in the other direction, more infantile and immature, in both design and character

which is fine until he started making it sound like he was stating a fact and basically insulting every anime fan. This from a guy who works on Bayonetta, which is all about fanservice and the exact things he criticizes anime for. It basically is anime in videogame form. Its hypocrisy.

It is kind of weird hearing that from someone at Platinum games admittedly. If not Bayonetta then games like MGR, Wonderful 101, etc.

Anime's always been all over the place there. Then you get newer stuff like Bleach where some of them arguably look older than the adults they cast as teenagers in shows here.

Although they definitely skewed older looking back then. Just look at Dio above, isn't that when he's 12?
