It’s the hypocrisy for me…
The hypocrisy being that people don’t criticize CoD or NFL as much?
It’s because they are known quantities. Yearly fast food. You don’t go to McDonald’s and critique the quality of food. Unless it’s unexpectedly bad, of course. But if you go to a Michelin star restaurant and it tastes like McDonald’s…
Hellblade invited this criticism by portraying to be a
cerebral exploration of psychosis. Years of hype since the studio was founded. But it just ended up being a prettied up McDonald’s version of schizophrenia. You come out of it with no better understanding or perspective on mental health than you go into it. So if you remove the layer of storytelling, all you have is a shallow audio-visual experience, since the gameplay is barebones like a QD game. And if the audio keeps whispering in your ear opposing opinions and it irritates you, all you are then left with is a visual experience. At that point, high quality footage is all you need. If it comes free on PS plus, people will try it out and may even be impressed. But to pay for it, there needs to be a better hook. The Order 1886 and Ryse had similar problems. But at least those didn’t offend your ears.
This is not to invalidate your or others’ positive experience of the game. All art is subjective at the end of the day and may be you took something away from it that others couldn’t. Just explaining why others may not agree with you. There’s no hypocrisy or hidden agenda here. People feel what they feel.
