Not quite a lock but looking very likely. Avatar looks way out of reach now unless TFA musters some astonishing legs worldwide. Titanic is closer but even that looks a fair gap now.

I reckon TFA will break $2 billion but finish shy of Titanic on current trends/
It´s a lock. The world would have to all stop watching it this week for it not happen.

Frontloaded doesn't mean first weekend only.

The majority of the people that wanted to see it, saw it in huge numbers in the first 3 weeks.

It's not poised to have insane legs and has had drops consistent with a massive summer blockbuster.

What would you call that?

Yep, it's not going to be a phenomenon that lasts for months like Titanic or Avatar.
It isn't as universal, it's just a huge blockbuster.

I think the most interesting aspect will be how much more than Furious 7 it makes, outside of North America. That's the most valid comparison. At least, it will be close. And because of premium formats, Furious 7 might actually be the most watched movie of the year (outside of NA).

...and all thanks to China. Christ.

I wouldn't be surprised if Warcraft is a decent hit worldwide after all.

Furious 7 was released in 3D outside NA ..

Based on Monday results and early Tuesday pre-orders, even getting to $150M might not happen for TFA in China. It's going to need a big increase this coming weekend to do better than $130M, and there are 4-5 local films (plus The Last Witch Hunter) opening.

Topping Titanic WW is definitely looking shakier than it did a week ago. $2B is still locked though.

China has failed the world once again.

$130M is still big there for a Hollywood film. Just Mission Impossible big instead of breaking records big.

Anyhow, other Asian countries were forecasting this for weeks.

On the positive side of things, it looks like both Star Wars and the Revenant did better on Sunday that estimated.

A few more chinese people I know saw the movie.

A girl i know saw it with her family. As expected she said she had to expain things to her mother through out the whole movie. I can see this being a common problem and just imagine all those people who dont have someone to explain things to them.

When you dont know han, luke vader and the story in general etc the movie loses most of it's draw and feeling. Isn't like the old days where having light sabers and flyng machines is a big technology push. The movie is great for a lot of us but what does it really do beyond other movie's in today's movie market? That's most of the problems for china but I'd expect the next movie to end up better.

also took this photo for you guys, one of the video advertisements on this board was star wars (quite a big screen for sure, especially in person) . Other adverts on that screen were for LOL, samsung and a few I didnt pay attention to

There is no chance of SW8 moving. Bob Iger has already stated the reason for the date is the 40th anniversary tie-in date, and for merchandising anniversaries are big.

And in the end Disney will continue to make far far more off merchandise than the actual films. The Force Awakens merchandise $ was already over $1 billion before the film released. There will be more made of TFA merchandise than the film makes at the box-office.

That is why SW8 has the date it has. It's not like the film needs delays for production reasons. The sets are all build and everything. Film begins full production in a little over a week.

Assuming production goes well, that should put it on a similar production schedule as TFA, which wrapped principal photography in November 2014.

Does filming start in a week?

And Disney's Avatar Land is opening in 2017, so they don't want to mess with the Avatar 2 opening because it benefits them.

I believe it was supposed to start within the next week or two, they already filmed some scenes in Skellig Michael as it's a pretty precarious spot to film in.

Seems like we've settled into a pattern of Deadline wildly overestimating TFA weekends before Disney slightly underestimates the Sunday hold.

That Revenant showing isn't bad since there has been a dvd quality release on the Internet for 3 weeks.

I think it's got more of an event film vibe to it that makes it a lot easier to sell on-the-fence people on catching it in a theater than settling on a DVD rip.

I won't explain shit to my nonexistent kids and even if I had to it'd be something that actually impacts their lives.

"Conan! What is best in life"
"Let me tell you about the box-office reciepts of 2016-2017. A wilderness of fire and flame it was."
"BUT DID YOU ADJUST FOR INFLATION"
"To Hell with inflation, and Crom, and YOU."
