People wanted to see Paul Walkers final film just like The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger which opened with $158,411,483

But still hasn't launched in China, Japan and Russia - the former being its largest OS market by far and the other two in the top 5-7 ex-China.

But those are pretty much the only territories left. Most big films will launch in 1/3 to 2/3 of their foreign territories that first weekend, so looking at global weekends is not really an accurate comparison.

Look at Transformers last year, which had a global opening of around $300M. Its overseas opening was basically Asia, Australia, and Eastern Europe. All of Western Europe and Latin America opened weeks later.

Part 8 needs Denzel.

And Helen Mirren. Would be awesome if she would become the villain in 8.

I agree. Still, these three territories will likely bring $150m on their own (and that's a conservative estimate). Given Fast 6 did $550m OS, and I can't see this one doing less, I think we are on to $700m OS gross.

The draw is that this is the real Expendables franchise.

Tony Ja
The Rock
Vin Diesel
Jason Statham
Kurt Russel

These guys , besides Kurt, are current stars.

Somebody said Furious 8 should have Liam Neeson as the Shawfather and that person is a genius.

Curious as to whether the 8th film will be the "70s inspired, "Vanishing Point"-esque revenge film" they were talking about originally making.

Cinderella's hold is pretty nice.

I have feeling it's going to be more Dom and Rock centered. I could see it being about them chasing the bros across the country or something like that.

Liam Neeson playing a badass villain in general is a genius idea

What's important is that Kurt Russell, who is as entertaining as ever, is getting a bigger role next time. His timing is still spot on.

Woah.

Never really particularly liked Fast & Furious that much, personally. A bit of a forgettable, cookie-cutter action movie franchise.

The reception for Furious 7 is looking great though.

After the mediocre 2014, this will truly be a crazy year for movies, lots of exciting releases coming up. It's also nice to see more and more blockbusters popping up all year round, maybe one day there won't be any dead months left.

It crazy to see F&F emerge suddenly as this box office giant.

And awesome.

The FF franchise has been big to huge since the fourth installment, it's not really that sudden. The fact that it kept its momentum and kept growing sequel after sequel is really impressive though.

"beats off competition" ;)

Vin Diesel...I would let him. :p

I want to see it, but damn the parking lot was full. I hate going to the movies and not getting a seat in the middle somewhere so I will wait until the hype dies down.

14 years ago, I've would never imagined a tuner car movie end up being a multi dollar franchise.

I tried to catch a Thursday showing but got sick and I'm gonna wait until I see it on Wednesday and I haven't went to the movies on a Wednesday in a while.

Good gawd almighty. Who have thought a movie about street racing would be Universals cash cow every two years? As much as I would like it to end with 7, the franchise can still keep itself relevant and offer a similar James bond feel . It's basically an Italian job setting since they introduced 5 as being a guest movie.

I hope there's a journalist out there this will write a book about this franchise. Where it started, how it died, its revival, and the stratospheric ascension.

The fact that we had a film hit >$140M when only 25% of the audience as white is really impressive. This might be the first time in history that minority audiences counted for over $100M in an opening weekend.

Well the USA is close to about 20 Latin countries, its not weird that in thirty years time Hispanics will be the majority.

Yall best get used to more realistic film casts!

I'll take the heat, but I don't think the Paul Walker bump is as big as some people think it is (and I loved him in the series). The marketing and word of mouth has been great for this film and it was going to be huge either way. I think this movie still does $125M+ opening weekend without that effect, but it's still a beautiful send off to him anyway.

I know, I thought it would earn maybe 50 cents to a dollar at most. To earn multi dollars is ridiculous.

This should have better legs than most F+F movies. There's absolutely no competition in any form until Avengers 2 in a month.

I'm glad it's all coming good for Vin, he had a real wobble in the mid 2000's where it seemed his bubble had burst but he's really turned it around.
He seems like such a genuine and cool guy, happy for him.

diesel said Kurt Russell will have a much bigger role in 8. Curious to see how that plays out.

It was obvious Furious 7 is gonna be huge but yowza. This, Avengers, Star Wars, this year is gonna be absurd when all is said and done.

wait what? isnt that next year?

Not sure why you listed Terminator. It's not going to be anywhere near close to stuff like Mockingjay, Spectre, or Mission Impossible. It will do decent but not one of the big boys.

My Bad.
Avengers, Star Wars, Jurassic World, MockingJay, Spectre, Mission Impossible, Terminator, etc.

Regardless, highest grossing year for movies ever?!?

Probably. Some of that depends on those mid-level movies we don't talk about as much. Despite all the broken records, 2015 is only slightly ahead of 2012 and is behind of 2010 YTD.
