In my defense;
Apes was sold out and there were no other showings for 2 hours
I went there to go to Movie Tavern, not actually watch a movie
I didn't pay to see Transformers at all (I went to the Philly premiere and had a free ticket for Movie Tavern).

tldr; FIGHT ME

I wouldn't even watch TF4 again for free unless I wanted a 3 hr nap.

Dawn of the Planet of The Apes is by a considerable margin the best blockbuster of this year.

For me:
Xmen
Apes
Guardians
Edge of tomorrow
Captain America

Wait..do cartoons count, cuz I might put dragon 2 above apes. That series is beautiful

Disney starting the Big Hero 6 train early. Seeing commercials all the time.

The only trailer I've seen was pretty bad, although I'm most definitely not the target audience, so that probably means nothing. The movie also seems to have a really weird release schedule, launching in the US in early November (11/7/14) and in most European territories in late January 2015, e.g. it seems to be released in UK on 1/30/15. That's completely different from Frozen.

Yeah, they mentioned it for sure.
It was very low key though, I remember being surprised they didn't push that angle more.

To be fair, Disney's in-house animation studio still has a ton of good-will built up from Wreck-It Ralph & Frozen. Plus I don't think they'd want to confuse people into thinking Big Hero 6 is in the MCU by playing up the Marvel angle too much, so they went for limiting the references to Marvel to "Hey, this is based on a Marvel comic" like they did in the trailer attached to GotG.

Wreck it Ralph and The Muppets were both like that as well. UK getting them both a few months later. Disney can be odd with releases at times. I was surprised that Frozen was all around the same time.

They did in the trailer that showed during the GotG IMAX 3D showing on Opening Night.

Interesting. Going to be interesting on whether that GotG IMAX Marvel trailer namedrop was a one off or if they plan to mention Marvel in future trailers/commercials. Frozen will probably be mentioned a lot as well. With both of those being mentioned in marketing I can see BH6 doing really well.

They definitely had to mention the Marvel connection during GotG for obvious reasons, and they've been mentioning Wreck-It Ralph & Frozen from Day 1. They'll probably play up the Marvel angle more outside of Marvel movies in later commercials & trailers (more so since GotG was the last Marvel movie of the year).

I can say this, if Big Hero 6 turns out great & gets the word-of-mouth Guardians did, it'll be a monster at the box office.

That's interesting. I never noticed. It's probably not as much of an issue with movies mainly targeted at kids and families.

Yeah.

I liked the last 4 disney CG movies {not counting planes. urf} but none of them were really top tier renaissance/classic era good but I am always hoping that they do create something that good.

Is it wrong that I skipped it? I went to go watch it at Movie Tavern with a friend, but the showing was sold out.

...I watched Transformers for the 2nd time instead D:

So you watched Transformers twice and TMNT, over Dawn?! Seriously though, it's the best big-budget blockbuster this year.

For me:
Xmen
Apes
Guardians

Captain America

I found HTTYD 2 disappointing. It gave glimpses of how the world works but just not enough to make the world-building feel compelling. There were some cool dragon designs, but the legendary types to be just two of the same was a waste and not as badass as the villain in the first movie.

The coolest looking character with the mask gets nerfed once it's revealed. There are still good things but it wasn't as satisfying as Apes was on all levels. Some fantastic cinematography and good action scenes with good main characters but were kind of status quo.

None of the Big Hero 6 trailers that WDAS released on YouTube...showcase the fact that it's a Marvel property.

Maybe it's in the 3D IMAX trailer, but it definitely doesn't seem to be a recurring theme in Big Hero 6 advertisements.

Every showing I've seen of GOTG had the Big Hero 6 trailer before it, and they specifically mention 'Based on the Marvel comic series'

Edit: And now I see why. The graphics for that US trailer are different from the one before GOTG. They must've made it specifically for GOTG/that Marvel mention

That's funny how the Japanese voices fit better.

Another Guardians of the Box Office Update: The $300M Domestic March for the #1 Movie of the Summer & Year

this is a launch aligned comparison, so that you can see how the movie is doing.

[Movie: Daily Sat / Sun - Domestic Gross / # of Days (Total Domestic / WW Gross)]
GotG: $6,218,000 / $6,250,000 - $274,610,000 / 31 ($274,610,000 / $547,710,000) <wknd est>
Cap 2: $2,150,530 / $2,150,530 - $237,155,480 / 31 ($259,746,958 / $714,063,958)
IM 1: $6,068,126 / $3,689,901 - $276,166,336 / 31 ($318,412,101 / $585,174,222)
MoS: $1,944,841 / $1,411,085 - $280,888,962 / 31 ($291,045,518 / $668,045,518)

Current Domestic Top 5 of 2014 (as of Sunday Estimates)
[#. Movie: (Domestic Gross / WW Gross)]
1. GotG: ($274,610,000 / $547,710,000)
2. Cap 2: ($259,746,958 / $714,063,958)
3. LEGO Movie: ($257,748,132 / $468,048,132)
4. Transformers: ($244,326,000 / $1,065,626,000)
5. Maleficent: ($238,501,000 / $748,501,000)

So I'm guessing that the weekend after next, Guardians stands on the verge of crossing that $300M marker? and just after next weekend, Starlord will be saying "On your Left" to MoS?

It looks like the weekend estimates don't actually include Monday, so Monday could be another big day for Guardians that could close that gap with IM1 again, possibly putting it back in the lead.

So based on guardians drops and the average time it takes for a film to go to blue ray where should the final world wide gross be roughly

Probably depends on how it does when it actually opens up in China, etc. The domestic gross is better than WW right now, which never happens in the final tally.

It won't do transformers numbers, but it'll be impressive.
