The lack of interest in the Titanic re-release confirms a view I have held for a while, that Titanic was a fad that was the right movie at the right time in 1997 and hasn't held long-term interest like other classic films such as The Wizard of Oz, Jaws, The Godfather, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., etc. I mean I don't know a single person who re-visited it on DVD.

The fact basically every single 3D re-release so far including the dreadful Star Wars Episode I is out-performing it pretty much is falling in line with this.

I don't think you can draw these conclusions at all. E.T. was re-released 10 years ago in 3000 theatres and only managed $15M in its first weekend, and $35M total. Toy Story 1 + 2 were re-released in 3D as a double release in 1700 theatres and only grossed $12M in their first weekend. Were those movies fads too?

Star Wars Ep1 3D only made 22M in its first weekend, and 43M total. Titanic is already at 15-16M after 3 days and due to the holiday weekend, it should be close to 30M by Monday. I think it has a pretty good chance at passing Episode 1 by the end of next weekend. It won't touch the Lion King though.

The big question for me is WHY did people think Titanic would do huge numbers? I get Sculli thinking it would be the #1 film of April. He loves all things Titanic and that blinds him from the reality of the situation but why did like every boxoffice tracking site buy into the 150+ mil domestic predictions? It's crazy.

It seemed obvious it was destined to do mediocre numbers and disappear like every other 3D re-release before it that wasn't a Disney film

Cameron Marks, "history repeating itself", etc.

BoxOfficeTheory guys are now all saying Titanic will probably finish its domestic re-release run with only 40-50 million. lolololololol. The initial estimates for it pre-tracking were 155 million. This is the best thing to happen at the boxoffice in ages.

Who was going to push Titanic to $150 million? The teenage girls that saw it over and over are now all in their late 20s or 30s. They're not rushing out to see that movie again (and again). The teenage girls of today have no connection to Titanic, at best they were wearing diapers when it was first released. Not to mention that The Hunger Games, the second biggest teenage girl-centric movie of the year, is in theaters right now.

Titanic was never going to be a monster.

Cameron Marks, "history repeating itself", etc.

Still seemed absurd, there isn't anything more special about Titanic than Star Wars Episode I or the rest. Only the really obsessed fanboys for a given film tend to go to the non-Disney re-releases. The average movie goer has no interest in seeing a movie more than once.

At least many are saying this is probably going to help scare studios away from any other future 3D re-releases which is good.

Fanboys.

However, The box office theory guys are wrong all the time. I have been lurking that community for 15 yeas (back when it was the Boxofficemojo forums) and they are about as accurate in their predictions as GAF. They also hype up every big release like GAF. A large portion of posters thought that Pirates: At World's End had a shot at a $150-175M opening after seeing the Spider-man 3 numbers.

Well BoxOffice.com also bought into the 150 mil+ hype as well.

In the end 3D re-releases is a failed money making scheme unless it's a Disney film. Time to close shop on this little experiment.

I said earlier in this thread that Titanic was going to win the weekend. This is why I don't play the stock market, guys.

As for those Jennifer Lawrence pics, if anyone still has em, shoot me a PM.

I am glad that American Reunion has done well on Friday. I really enjoyed watching it.

A lot of us expected The Hunger Games to remain on top.

We will have to see the worldwide numbers. Also, these things can't be that expensive to do. $10-20M on the remaster. A small to moderate ad campaign. The Phantom Menace brought in another $100M worldwide with the re-release. Lucas also has an excuse to release yet another blu-ray version (in 3D!) for the fans to buy in a year. I doubt he is losing money on the experiment.

I would imagine that Titanic easily does $100M worldwide. Maybe more.

Quality > quantity. The pool of judges may be smaller, but they've historically picked the better, longer-lasting movies. Now, they've picked some stinkers, too, I'm sure, but quality is not a popularity contest in either the shorter-term OR the longer-term.
Quality does reign but not in terms of longevity. A movie with real legs has to have a broad acceptance (Over time) too. So Oscar often has one but not the other, the D'Or often has one and not the other. The hope is that they both spark popularity/interest in the film and that's what makes it stand the test of time rather than becoming a personal favorite of a few.

It's why a classic film does not need validation from any of them.

I have seen almost no marketing for Titanic, whereas The Phantom Menace re-release was being plastered everywhere.
I think it depends on the channel. Food network & Bravo were advertising it like crazy.

I expected it to have a presence on the box office, but you can't compare Titanic to a release of Lion King (Vaulted) or Star Wars (Fanboy driven).

Fans of Titanic have the videos or they can see the movie practically every month on some chanel or another. The 3D was the major hook and seeing it all cleaned up on the big screen would be a secondary one. I'm not sure women would be drawn in based on those two things.

Who the fuck was championing 150m for Titanic? Or are you talking overall rerelease gross? I hope so.

My point is that many of the Palm d'Or choices HAVE become classics over time because quality is the only sure predictor of longevity. So, a few very savvy judges will inherently have a better sense for "classic" than an Academy filled with people pandering to the popular tastes.

cuz people are crazy

it was obvious to anyone thinking straight that Titanic was gonna do Episode 1 3D-like numbers at best.

I don't think the Academy Awards pander to popular opinion so much as they do their own tastes. Years where the most popular film wins, like Titanic, are not all that common. But they do like safer films. Historical pieces are over-represented. As are movies that deal with racism.

Ground breaking films like Blade Runner or Alien are often ignored because of their genre in favour of films that are forgotten a few years later. Until they increased the number of best picture nominations from 5 to 10, there had only been 3 science fiction films nominated for best picture. Two of those were E.T. and Star Wars. Clockwork Orange was the other.

I am seeing a lot of advertising for Titanic here in Denmark.

I would really like seeing Terminator, Terminator 2, Ghost Busters, ET, and others remastered in 3D.

Honestly i think the best remaster movies will be animated movies since kids will be dragging their parents to watch these remastered animated movies.

Actually Some people thought it will do much more than Episode 1 3D, since the original movie made a lot more money. Some people counted on people getting nostalgic and see it again (not as many people of course) and that the movie would attract new audiences. I did not think so though.

It's also infuriating that most of the Titanic fanatics that lampooned people for predicting (correctly and logically) that Titanic would fall far short of The Hunger Games have been reluctant to own up to their mistakes. Adamant acolytes need to nut up. This goes for moderators as well (looking at you, Kagari).

I just finished "fapping", and I...

Okay, before anyone tries to say "OHOHO HE'S TAG FISHING" let me just say, no I'm not. I really want to reveal something. I've never felt this way before.

Just looking at those pictures. I realized I love her. It's not a kinda "I wanna fuck her so hard" kinda love, it's the love that wants me to find her. I want her in my life. It just clicked. Of course I stopped fapping. I didn't want my worthless cum to show her how much I love her.

I just stared at the pictures. One by one. A minute each, absorbing every little detail. She is beautiful.

I'd abandon everything in my life right now to be with her. I need her.

EDIT:I'm telling GAF this because somewhere, someone might have these similar feelings. Friends of mine, and my girlfriend, won't.

Now you know how I feel about LDR.

The simple fact is that the 3D rerelease fad is already over. It only worked for Lion King because the time period it came out was void of kids movies. 40-50 million is the best anything else can hope for.

Of course Titanic isn't going to do huge numbers the first time around. But come June, it'll have just exited the top 5.

Don't you guys know anything? =p

You know the worst fad that already took off, splitting a book into 2 movies so they can milk people for more money. This is much, much worse than 3D imo.

One thing I don't get: Lily Collins is Phil's daughter? How can someone so ugly spawn a hot piece of ass?

Is it something that rock stars have? (see: Steven Tyler)
