Those are the chapters that ultimately set this game apart. I hope MachineGames never stops making those chapters. Plus Chapter 6 has some of my favorite shootouts in the game. The entire chapter is shooting.

Ya, it's something of an acquired taste for the pacing of Starbreeze/MachineGames games. It can definitely throw people off if they're not expecting it.
The Darkness was my first Starbreeze game and I had that experience when I got to the subway hub world. I realized that the game was going to be a little "different" from anything I had played, but I readjusted my expectations and carried on with the wonderful experience that game is.
So I went into Wolfenstein knowing a little bit more what I was getting myself into, and I don't think the game would be nearly as special without those "downtime" chapters.
They certainly have a unique way of doing a shooter campaign.
Since this is the new OT: do armor upgrades just make armor deplete slower, or does it increase the number beyond 100? I went back through to try the other timeline and have been getting health upgrades which increases the health counter above 100, but that didn't happen with armor.

I wasn't sure how much of that downtime and hub style gameplay would carry over considering Wolfenstein has such a shooter heavy identity, but once they started talking about "adventure elements" I got excited. Then you play the game and hit Chapter 5. Happy tears. Then you hit Chapter 8 and it's like 2004 walked into my room and gave me a lap dance. And 2004 isn't old and busted, 2004 still looks as great as she ever did. Then you realize that 2004 was one of the best things to ever happen to you and apologize for ever leaving her.
I think it really only comes down to Destiny or Far Cry 4 to take the crown from Wolfenstein right now. Destiny is a completely different genre and Far Cry 4 looks like Far Cry 3 in the mountains, so we'll see.
while I agree that wolfenstein is a real great single fps, and I also recommend it to everyone, fps crown for me definetely goes to titanfall until now, as it gets so many things done fantastically in the gameplay department.
I would say best multi fps titanfall, best single fps wolfenstein for this year, and up to now.

i will put this on my radar. this thread is giving me original bioshock vibes. i love fpses with a good storyline. sounds like my cup of tea with this adventure game deal.
edit: these the same guys behind chronicles of riddick. no wonder its good
Great OP. this is the most effective OP in recent memory.
I've seen a thousand battles.
I've seen the sun set on five different continents.
I've seen dust rise off the surface of the moon.
But all I want...is to see you again.
This game so far sits pretty high up on my 'best of' 2014 list. The fun gunplay really makes a difference and the level design is pretty solid as well.
If you guys are fans of the FPS genre or remotely interested in this game, just buy it.
This game has been on my radar for a while now but not got round to grabbing it. Anybody know where I can get it cheap? UKGaffer here. Looks sooo good.
Ya, the first or so hour was pretty mediocre IMHO, but the game gets better and better.
Last night I've beaten
...London Nautica...
...struggling in some points, but constantly having alot of fun.
Then...
...the second part at rebels HQ, with the 'subquest' of Max's toys, the sewers and other stuff. It felt like Riddick meets HL2, successfully catching the soul of both
It seems to be a shared opinion here. Although the first level is definitely a weak part of the game, I can't even imagine calling it shit. It's a pretty good set-up for the story and introduction to the mechanics.
I wouldn't say shit but it's certainly by the numbers. It's like they wanted to make it feel like an old WW2 FPS and then change it because of the story. Altho all their marketing and trailers pretty much ruined the surprise.
10 as well. I hated the underwater part where you just drove around, solved "puzzles" and listened to boring conversations.
I wish the whole middle part in the game was skippable. Wolfenstein is the kind of game that I just want to experience for the action, because it's so freakin' good.
I seem to be one of the few who thought the opening level was great, sans the fairly lengthy, QTE scripted aircraft sequence (which I liked, but becomes tedious on replay). The actual level, working your way up to what is essentially Castle Wolfenstein, and the meaty sounding WW2 weapons along with more traditional Wolfenstein super science 1940's Nazis ticked all the right boxes for me. I thought it was a great intro, with a lot of atmosphere and homage.
Finding Uber mode annoying... Keep dying trying to escape from the prison in chapter 4 though have enjoyed it so far and looking forward to completing it.

Agree 100% with the OP. I don't think any game is going to top it this year. And the only reason I even gave the game a shot was due to impressions on GAF. <3

Sounds like a shooter for me. Those were my favourite shooters of the last decade. Got bulletstorm in the recent steam sale so I still have to check that out.
My most favourite was soldier of fortune, and this gives me the same vibe.
Debating whether or not to pay full price when I'm playing so many other things right now...but its tempting.
lol, yep. The game is decent, but it is getting a lot of love on GAF and it's going to make some rush out and get the game. Disappointment is to be expected -- it's being overrated. It should only be considered for GOTY because not much else has been releasing this year that's worth a damn, so far. Wolfenstein has some pretty mediocre level design, and the gameplay to cutscenes is poorly done.

I'm on Chapter 10 now and am not a big FPS fan so I haven't played a whole lot of them, but this is easily my favorite FPS since the original Bioshock, and my GOTY so far.
Edit: One thing I don't like if I'm correct is that if you replay a chapter you lose your progress beyond the point you go back to? If that is actually how it works it's pretty dumb but other than that I love it.
I would recommend it to anyone who asks about it - it was absolutely awesome. My first and only next-gen experience so far and I'm ready for more.
The last 2 hours really took the game to new heights for me. The emotional reveal
I played the Fergus timeline, so Wyatt's brain in the robot
and the final fight with
Deathshead
afterwards had me so invested in the outcome of the game.
A few things (might be spoilers):
- I wish they did more with the "ancient technology"
They find that spike/coil ball and Caroline's suit, but then that's it. I thought we would be finding a few more pieces of technology to take down the Nazis with. Would've been nice to get a weapon or something specifically for the player.
- Deathshead was a horrifying villain.
I love and think it adds to it so much that you only see him twice. Both times you see him you grit your teeth and you fill up with so much rage and hate. Was amazing that the game could actually make me feel that way.
- Pacing is incredible
Never once felt bored, even during the storybuiliding/slower sections. Loved finding the secrets around the safehouse and doing the mini-quests. MAX HASS!
- When the safehouse is
raided
... holy hell. The emotions took over me. I play the game mostly stealthy, but when those Nazis
walked into my home
I went duel-wield and shotguns through the whole section.
Amazing game. I also enjoyed the first level. I played on Uber so I died A LOT. I think I would've enjoyed the game even more if I played it on a lower difficulty.
Buy this game. Now.
EDIT: Quick edit, while I loved the final 2 hours of the game more than anything the actual ending of the game was a bit of a let down.
You're left staring at the grenade in Deathshead's hand for so long, I almost thought it was a QTE and I was mashing buttons to swat it away. Really would've liked to have an escape sequence. And we have nuke's right? I don't get a scene of a mushroom cloud? Come on.
Pretty good game, i´m having a blast, i´m doing my second playtrough to get all the cards, gold objects etc, loving the gunplay and the upgrades are insane, one of my favourite games of the year so far
How so? The gameplay to cutscenes is handled poorly (at least the PS4 version is since that's what I played). The game is already ugly and when a cutscene comes up you have to wait for it to load a slightly less ugly prerendered scence. Yay. Some loads are longer than others and you get this great screen to stare at while you wait for the story to kick in:
