still havent finished it.

hated the stealth sections and the wandering around in their hideout to look for something. I'm in mission 8 or so. Only played on release weekend. Haven't touched it since.

Like the subway in The Darkness, Wolfenstein's hideout hub mixes up the pacing.

I can certainly see why people wouldn't like it, but I think mixing it up a little bit in between all the amazing shooting is very important. There's a lot of detail and newspaper clippings in the hideout, at least, it's interesting to look at. There are some interesting character interactions to be had in the hideout that absolutely justify its existence, in my mind.

Really glad people recommended this game to me. I had no intentions of getting it after seeing the trailer.

Platinumed it, 999'd it. Coerced two different buddies to play it, one who went out and bought it after completing it just to support the devs (and to have a historical copy in their game library).

My gaming purchase of the year so far.

I hope more people buy it, and it has very long tail sales that show other devs that strong SP gameplay can be a profitable place to be during this gen.

Tom Keegan directed the performance captures for The Darkness, which came out in 2007. So at least in tandem with Naughty Dog.

I actually think butchers bay did use motion capture. Stull think naughty dog implemented better and might be why they are so recognized for it.
Regardless the new order is a very good game.

Eh, I think the emotional expressiveness of Jenny (and Jackie's loading screen monologues) is easily as impressive as what Naughty Dog was doing in the first Uncharted game at the same time.

The Darkness was wildly overlooked, in general, though. Got overshadowed by Bioshock, guess people only have enough attention span for one lengthy SP narrative-FPS with no MP at a time.

It is a fun, well-made game. The mechanics are tight. It looks good enough on the PlayStation 4.

It didn't wow me, though. It still just felt like just another well-made first-person shooter because that's exactly what it was.

Naughty Dog should have benefited from Sony's experience with performance capture on 2006's Heavenly Sword which also had great performances.

Loved this game, and I was slighty irked by the score IGN gave it, but then again I usually don't care for reviews scores for a reason

I just felt that the game didn't deserve anything less than an 8

I didn't know Murdock from A-Team did Deathshead!

Phenomenal voice, Dwight Schultz, got there.

It might sound silly to most people, but this is actually the thing that made me finally pull the trigger and order the game a minute ago. :)

Hope I'll have as much fun with it as you guys do.

With an essential early-game choice that makes it worth playing through twice, the story at the center of Wolfenstein: The New Order props up its competent -- but mostly unremarkable -- shooting.

I would love to know what games Colin Moriarty thinks have "remarkable shooting", if Wolfenstein doesn't.

I know you're JK but Killzone and myriad other recent FPS games prove that unless you are COD or Battlefield, you're not going to get the community needed to sustain the game or justify the cost of putting in MP in the first place.

Designing a good campaign and a good multiplayer system are two entirely different skill sets and COD/BF4 have 10+ years of refining in their systems.

lol, there wasn't anyone at IGN that actually likes shooters that wanted to review the game?

I listened to Colin talk about the game on Podcast Beyond and he basically praised the game, and the shooting mechanics if I'm not mistaken. He basically had the same problems we all had with the game. And he's a history nut too so the alternate timeline went a long way with him.

Then again, when it comes to mechanics, The New Order doesn't do much to differentiate itself from the glut of shooters that come out every year. Blazcowicz has a typical array of weapons at his disposal -- a knife, a pistol, a machinegun, a sniper rifle, and so on -- as well as some Nazi future tech, like laser rifles, that give the game the alternate history feel that Wolfenstein has thrived on for 22 years. Gunplay is fun and fluid, though I have to question the inclusion of dual-wielding, which, while cool in theory, is exceptionally cumbersome and entirely inadequate in heated firefights.

Colin and I played different games. Wolfenstein does plenty to differentiate itself from Call of Duty and Battlefield and these so called "shooters that come out every year". And he's the only one I've seen complain about dual-wielding, that makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

"Starbreeze was employing performance capture before Naughty Dog was being praised for it"

OP,Uncharted released two years before dark athena. The link u gave only talks about athrna which released in 2009 using performance capture. Uso I think naughty dog used it before Starbreeze unless butchers bay also used it.

Didn't performance capture start being used in Uncharted 2 (2009) rather than the first game? It's around 2009 when it started being used, Dark Athena came out in April before Uncharted 2 in October. Point was, other developers were starting to use pcap around that time and it has led to incredible results. And in Dark Athena, it was in-game.

Sad Eyes is a highlight too, look at all that dialogue you get if you wait and don't talk to her immediately, plus she gets to spit at you :D

Jens Matthies: We employ the full range of performance capture, meaning the simultaneous recording of body motion, facial movements and voice audio. The goal is always to reproduce the actor's performance as faithfully as possible in-game. Because the physiognomy of the actor invariably differs from the in-game model to some degree, manual post production work is always required to accomplish this. During a recording session such as this we always try to create as safe an environment as possible for the actor, so they are free to play the emotions of the moment. We encourage improvisation and will often make rewrites to the lines in collaboration with the actor.

Damn it, now want to replay Dark Athena.

Any love this game gets... it deserves it. Definitely a GOTY for me so far. Played through it 3 times now, I think - and tempted to do another playthrough soon.

I'm kinda conflicted about Wolf TNO and not in a 'i enjoyed it but now hate it kinda way'.

I think it's a fantastic game and it is very much in with a shout as being one of my favourite games this year. I've played through it a couple of times and enjoyed it immensely. It's world building is awesome, the characters are fantastic and menacing, and it's gunplay is really good in many ways. Yet, tbh I think I'll probably end up replaying Wolf 2009 more than TNO in the future.

It's really hard to explain as it's very much a personal thing but despite how good TNO is I just find 2009 more fun to actually play. I think it's just little things more that niggle at me. For example I love shotguns and I think both shotgun types in TNO aren't particularly great (well more so the traditional double barrel). The sound mix being a bit fucked is still disappointing (despite the gun sounds themselves being great) as well. Again, nothing that breaks the game at all, just for me a few things I dislike.

Still, I'd highly recommend to any FPS fan :)

Did some research and I think motion capture was used in butcher bay but naughty dog Def took it yo thr next level. with higher production values which really impressed people especially when you added in the amazing set pieces. That is probably why they are so praised for it even though they were not the first to implement it in video games.
Also pretty sure they used it in drakes fortune but not positive

I started playing this game the other day. Truly an amazing FPS, having great fun and I feel nostalgic playing it.

But dual wielding shotguns with shrapnel ammo is amazing.

Yeah I was gonna say, Starbreeze used motion capture for Butcher Bay which was well before Uncharted. Starbreeze games never disappoint. Syndicate may not of been an amazing game but the performance capture in it was incredible, as is Wolfenstein. Dammit, now I wanna replay the entire Starbreeze back-catalogue.

The Darkness not having a PC port, only its slightly inferior sequel, burns me deeply, especially now that I've retired my 360 to the closet permanently.

The game looked like it had solid shooting and even some adequate stealthing, but the tone turned me away. The concentration camp section, the gore felt gratuitous rather than in line with typical id franchise chunks/ gibs, and pretty much the moment that I wanted to have nothing to do with the game, the
brain extraction scene at the end of the game. Fuck that.

This is currently my GOTY, ok there hasn't been a great deal of competition, but it's fun, silly, entertaining and the gun play is excellent. The music is superb and even though the story could be called stupid, it's also amazingly well written, and that conflict just propels it into an awesome game for me.

It also knows how to keep mixing it up, and it really keeps it fresh. I've played through twice, and now just going for 100% completion. I got Watch_dogs at the same time, and though I will go back to that after, it just felt like another poor mans AC game. The stupid "don't get spotted missions" or you have to restart do my head in. With Wolfie its if you get spotted, oh well you'll have to shoot your way out :)

Seriously, The Darkness should be on PC. Starbreeze could HD that sucker up, like they did with Butcher Bay. I really would like to play it again without the excessive motion blur :p

And I need to dance again.

I was actually going to point out that Wolfie not having full body awareness is a criticism (sliding and certain scenes mitigate it), but ehh that's just crazy me obsessed with that sort of thing :p

Looks like another shooter! Cool that they're doing some different stuff from the norm, but not different enough to interest me.

Ok, the action has finally become pretty intense and I'm having tons of fun.
As most of the FPS I loved, in some cases I 'like' to die so I can replay a certain section. :p

My only concern now is that I'm having problems with OBS and ShadowPlay so I can't share my joy. Too bad! :/

Get what your saying I'm a bit burned out on shooters but this does have a different kind of old school feel about it you just can't help to enjoy.

It's also worth mentioning that the game does what's now "the Batman thing": forgiving stealth encounters that blend into (hilarious) action sequences without making you feel like "you're doing it wrong".

Playing on hard really gives me an appreciation for what they did with the pacing. Early on, you're introduced to a small flying enemy. Oh no, I think. Now I need to deal with these every other encounter?! I enjoyed the combat as it was before. Well, it turns out, the developers were much smarter than I was giving them credit for at the time. That enemy type only shows up occasionally, and always in spaces that make sense (but the spaces don't feel like enemy-boxes, ala Dead Space 2's corner-hiders).

Within a level, there's usually a good series of tension->release built around exploring, stealth and regular shooter scenes. I can't understate how well considered it all felt. And! And and and: this style of gradual build->release isn't confined to individual levels. Even across chapters, different environments play into the larger ebb and flow of the game, often subverting expectations, giving you what you didn't even realise you wanted. Oh, you're on disc four and think you understand the general flow of the game? Fuck you, we're going to complete fuck with the expectations we've spent the entire game building and you're going to love it.

I have problem in which the game isn't that hard?!!!?

No excuses! You do it right or you don't include it!

Or perhaps my enjoyment of the "real" Shotgun was increased due to the subversion of my expectations after I had already written the game off as having a "crappy Shotgun".

So I'll take 1 level of a disappointing Shotgun to make the moment when I get two massive auto-shotguns that can shoot bouncing shrapnel that much more impactful.

OK I can give you that, going from that weedy pile of shit to the auto shotguns was at least something.

the game crashed today while saving and corrupted my save game

deleted and downloaded the cloud save, which it looks like has not been uploading as im back near the beginning of the game

next gen ladies and gentlemen... fuck this shit

GOTY for me as well currently but I have yet to beat Deathshed.

I'm stuck on his second form something fierce.

I just bought this game five minutes ago because of you GAF.

If it isn't good I'm holding all of you accountable. :)

Game is tight and tough. Really enjoying it, wish I had more time to play

The worst thing about this game is the audio though

Ive found if I use the new Sony Blue headphones the audio is much easier to listen to. Funny part is I find they have somehow switched the left and right channels so I wear the headphones backwards :0
