Since immigrating to New York from China in 1986, Zenxin Wang has loved the diversity of the city and how people of different backgrounds get along in harmony.
Now, the 68-year-old limo driver worries for his safety after a stranger whacked him over the head with an umbrella during a tussle on a Queens bus, telling him, "I don't like Chinese people."
I feel sad and I feel very uncomfortable, Wang told the Daily News. I think New York is a nice city, many kinds of races of people, all of them together, very nice, very peacefully. Now I know that some people hate Chinese and I have to be careful.
The drama began after Wang struck up a conversation with a Chinese woman while waiting for a Q20 bus in Flushing on March 7.
After they boarded the bus, a middle-aged Hispanic woman shoved him and the woman, Wang said.
Wang asked why she was shoving at them.
Because I hate Chinese people, she told him.
She said she hated Chinese and I criticized her, Wang said. I said, 'This is discrimination.
His words set her off more.
When I tried to get off the bus she hit me with the umbrella, Wang said.
Many of the riders on the bus were also Chinese. Some of them yelled out for the woman to stop, Wang said.
Wang wanted to call the police but one passenger yelled that he was in a rush to get somewhere. Wang let the bus go with his attacker still on it.
He didnt seek medical attention but his head ached for several days and, on Saturday, he told police what happened.
The woman is being sought by cops.
Wang pointed out that she is probably an immigrant, just like he is. She had an accent, he said.
