Wooo! Got Some New Games!

Dynasty Warriors 5. You guys convinced me. Gonna fire it up right now. Also, I picked up Monster Hunter cause I remember the demo being a weird sort of fun. The character customzation was cool and cooking was hysterical.

MH was only 16 I think, Dynasty was still 50, PAIN TO THE POCKET BOOK, but omg DW is awesome.

Well it was a toss up really:

Jade Empire or Devil May Cry 3, or Dynasty Warriors 5. The samurai warriors was ok from what I played but I really like the DW characters. Between DW5 and DW4 Empires ill be set I think.

Monster Hunter was more an impulse thing.

Where did you find Monster Hunter for $16?

I wouldn't mind it's half-assed PSO wannabe-ery for a year or so until PSU arrives. Although it would be nice if Capcom would improve upon the game for it's sequel so there will be a good PSU alternative.

Why? The character designs are meh and NO YUE YING!

I like them better in DW5, but why does it matter anyway, since you can get all their past outfits as unlockables? :)

The character design comment is disingenuous, SW has hot chix, ninjas, big guys with cannons strapped to their back, something for everyone.

SW has also has a FAR more interesting campaign mode, you spend the 20-30 minutes of each fight actually DOING shit! Rewarding and altering the dynamic of each battlefield with the completion of specific tasks, all unique to your chosen character + branching storyline. DW5 merely just tasks you with clearing out any named soldiers you run across ad nauseum. The maps bleed together into generic soup.

Progression system is better. Skill trees VS. lame auto xp-levelling. Shit you can even deflect bullets and arrows BACK at enemies in SW, not in DW.

More loot! Less need to scavenge for barrels/crates for loot and weapons per map since tough generals drop swag instead of XP items. GET READY FOR AWESOME COLLECTATHON FUN IN DW5!

DW5 DOES push the fog back and feature a superior bodyguard system...yet has the worst music and voice acting ever.

Samurai Warriors + XL : DIIX :: Dynasty Warriors 5 : Blaze and Blade. HA!

Used, and no instruction book. Dont really need one tho, its pretty good at teaching you how to monster hunt. Having fun with it so far, already got my character all decked out in some gear and hunting monsters.

:lol :lol at getting DW5 over DMC3.

But DW5 is still alright I guess, but I've been playing the same damn game since DW2. Basically, if you're not scared of hard games DMC3 is by far a better choice.

Could just be we're not interested in what Crapcom is selling.

DMC3 did not grab me and it had nothing to do with the difficulty. I just find the half baked Resident Evil wanna-be Castlevania game design tedious. It's so bad in fact, it wasn't worth keeping a free copy on my PS2 Hard Drive. That's space better dedicated to a game I'd like to play.

Capcom games are so bad, you don't want to pirate them. *ZING!*

This is true.

Damn, your hatred for Capcom is amusing. You realize, it's just a company right? I know Mikami probably ass-raped you when you were a little kid, but let it go already.

It's less hatred, and more me not buying their shit, and talking about / ridiculing it on this here forum. Either way - I still win. :D

Every now and then Capcom manages to release something worthwhile. Like a Street Fighter compilation, or Monster Hunter.

Simply put, Capcom has had their early 90's developer carte blanche revoked.

More Final Fight, Knights of the Round, Street Fighter 2/3 - less garbage Resident Evil engine recycling and <Sea Manky> trench coats and guns! ZOMG! </Sea Manky>

Hope that Darkstalkers Collection makes it here for under $30.

Capcom started sucking after Marvel vs Capcom and Tech Romancer. The lack of any real personality in the titles since has been disturbing. monster hunter being an exception.

I dunno, while I love to pull a Tubgirl on Capcom for rehashing that god awful Resident Evil engine for games in which it is totally inappropriate (DMC, Onimusha) the sad fact of the matter is even when I did enjoy Capcom games it was because they were using a rehashed game engine I liked.

Final Fight begat Knights of the Round
Street Fighter begat Darkstalkers
Resident Evil begat a whole bunch of bullshit that never should have seen the light of day.

In between the obvious engine rehashes and tweaks there are the unique aberrations that I have enjoyed Megaman Legends, Monster Hunter.

have you tried Monster Hunter online yet? is there a good community? i would love to play a PSO game without having to track down a network adapter for the GC and pay monthly fees.
anyone else that knows, please chime in.

Taken as an online game with friends, Monster Hunter was by fucking far my favorite PS2 game of last year.

I'd have no problem saying it was likely the most underrated game I've come across in quite some time.

The first half hour is really pretty icky, controls are muddy at first and everything seems wonky and unituitive.

But once the game clicks it does so unlike any other game before. Getting a hang of the hunting, gathering, item creation and start tackling the huge Wyverns (MH has the best boss fights in a game ever, IMO, seriously that fun), whee!

The game is just incredible stuff, lots of good memories. The combat system, balance and teamwork is the best in any online RPG, MMO or just co-op like so.

Too bad GA never gave it a real go for any length. There were a few folks who got into it but I was a tad late. Anyhow, it's very forgiving in terms of the time it takes to play. And can be totally relaxing or total white knuckle action.

You should fiddle with it online, MAF. It ppresents quite possibly the most satasfying difficulty level ever played as co-op for ease (which the entire first half can be done as, the second half of the game is really just a hard mode and I never stuck around for it sadly) and strikes a marvelous balance as so. Totally free to boot.

And yeah, MH is an absolute fuckton better than PSO. PSO is solid for what it is, and I enjoy it, but really, MH is just a totally different experenice. SO much more satasfying and unique.

I had a spot in the Monster Hunter beta, and the combination of moron players in the beta and the lack of a means of transporting to town to sell off items really killed the game for me.

One of my primary means of making money in these sorts of games, initially, is selling off useless items. IIRC, there was a limit to what you could carry, and with no means of leaving the battle stage - you got screwed out of a lot of items.

Another niggling aspect of the game was how you offered items to other players, I can't count the number of times some wanker was crying because he ran out of arrows, so I was going through the motions of giving them the arrows - and they run off like a pussy. In the meantime, my character is standing there vulnerable offering an item to someone that isn't there.

Just drop the damned thing!

Lack of voice support also sucked enormous balls. Particularly in a game like this where teamwork is crucial.

It's not an awful game by any stretch of the imagination, but it lacks the polish of PSO. I'm hoping Monster Hunter 2 improves on the flaws of the original. Allow me to warp back to town to purchase / sell off items, add voice chat, and the like.

I can't say I really agree with...uh, pretty much anything you said. Some parts would wreck portions of things I enjoyed even. =/

Also, I must ask...How is PSO more polished? The game is dated as heck, with a multitude of bugs, rampant cheating and the fact that it's largely the most shallow and easy game by a wide margain compared to it's peers. All this despite having gone through a multitude of editions ports, tweaks, ect.

I like PSO for the simplistic, casual dungeon crawl it is. But there's really nothing to the game. Certainly not anything that came within a comparable fashion to the finer points of MH, IMO.

I always enjoy my time with PSO, but then complain after every time I'm done with it, heh. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you realize you're not really acomplishing or working for anything, at least it does for me.

It doesn't feed off of any type of challenge, teamwork, equipment management and the fact is the entire game DOES really boil down to *taptaptap, cheer the item generator on*
